Question:

Can Azmacort cause swelling ankles?  I get at least 40 minutes of exercise a day so it is not inactivity (plus a toddler).

Response:

I had a swollen face (moon face) from using High Dose Azmacort for 3 months; so I would think it might be responsible; any such effect is dose dependent and time dependent. Azmacort seems to have more severe side effects than other steroid inhalers; also it’s singled out as the steroid inhaler for pregnant women to avoid, in an article at the JAMA asthma site. So it would be worth trying switching to another steroid inhaler. I find that Vanceril DS doesn’t cause this problem for me. Even better would be the new generation steroid inhalers, Flovent and Pulmicort. There are other things that can cause swollen ankles. Ellis

My son has ankle and other joint pain whenever he is on steroids.  The higher the dose, the more intense the symptoms Hulahoops

You would be wise to check with your doctor.  I don’t mean to alarm you, but swollen ankles and shortness of breath are symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure. It would be a good idea to have this ruled out.

Question:

Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how.   Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico,

I doubt it’s an option to lower the costs to as low as they are in Mexico. If such a regulation were to be passed they’d just raise the price in Mexico to what’s being charged here and folks in Mexico would just have to do without. If you cut down the ability of a drug company to get return on investment too much you just won’t see any more investment and hence no more new drugs. Many drugs costs millions to develop and either never see the market or get pulled from the market within months due to newly discovered problems. If drug companies had it so easy everyone would own one. Don’t push too hard for the government to step in unless you want similar controls & interference with your industry too. — Don Elton Columbia, SC http://www.midcarolina.org

I assume all the "alternative" treatment proponents on USenet will be totally against this petition since they mostly claim that they would be happy to operate under the same regulations as pharmaceutical companies

Well, I’d be against it.  Over the years I’ve found some companies that make a point of standardising their products.  Last thing I want is another layer or six of bureaucrats leeching off of these companies and justifying their expensive lifestyles by promulgating more regulations that will end by jacking up the prices of these products.   There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly.  Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups.  Much like it’s done here.  I trust the posters here a lot farther than some bureaucrat whose boss accepts money from pharmaceutical companies. Over all I like the current set up.  It’s inexpensive, and unconnected with the horrendously expensive medical-industrial combine–so far.   Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation?  I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic.  I went to GNC to look at Chitosan for the heck of it and I believe the small bottle was $29.00 or $39.00.  I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive. In fact, I watched a documentary about death and dying.  Several people had turned to alternative products and were spending several hundred dollars *per month* on herbs and vitamins.  What a rip off… and by the way no one survived. Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive! Patrice

But to what standard?  A year or so ago a local newspaper sent ’standardized’ herbal extracts to a lab for testing.  They discovered that these ’standardized’ extracts contained anywhere from 20% to 140% of what the manufacturers claimed. Then how can you trust companies that have worked very hard to get themselves excluded from just about all sort of laws protecting the medical consumer?  A McDonalds hamburger is subject to stricter regulations relating to food safety, purity and content. And of course it is inexpensive, it is always cheaper to skip the safety testing.  So what if you are using your customers as guinea pigs? I suggest that you use the same scepticism you apply towards real medicine when you look at the alternative crowd.   Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation?  I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I just spent a couple of years under Kaiser HMO.  I was very satisfied with the care.  I found them to be very aggressive about preventative medicine and ensuring my asthma was under excellent control. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."    General Colin Powell

Response:

Dosen’t mean that it is safe either.  Try to get somebody marketing ephedra products to give you an honest safety warning. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."    General Colin Powell

Response:

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic.  I went to GNC to look at Chitosan

So you have a co pay?  What is the ‘real’ cost of your meds?  Your employer and ultimately you and the people in your insurance pool bear the cost of those meds by your fees.  How much more would be in your paycheck if it weren’t for the high fees charged by the medical industry and it’s bureaucratic overseers? Just because the cost is taken out of your wages before you see it so you "won’t feel it" doesn’t mean you’re not paying through the nose. Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how.  Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico, our faithful legislators are fed re- election dollars by the pharm industries (can you smell the peanuts on their breath?)  so they can make billions charging higher prices for those on medicare, etc.  You and I pay for that, too.  And that’s taken out of your wages, too, before you can see it.   As a business owner, I can darn well see it. I don’t resent paying taxes and fica, but I sure do resent it when  big business pays off legislators to pass laws so they can suck up tax dollars that I have to pay. Rant.  Rave. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive.

Yeah.  It can be.  You have to do your research.  Don’t know what chitosan is, but  some companies do charge way more than their stuff is worth.  And there are always vultures looking to make money off the dying. On that, I have to repeat, do your research.  I have found certain companies that produce inxpensive but effective compounds that I have patronised over the years.  I have befriended both a western traditional herb store owner where I live, and a Chinese herb shop owner in NYC.  I have read dozens of books over the years, as well as many articles on the internet.  Some people don’t or can’t spend the time and effort to do this, and they will remain the prey of the con man or the medical industry.  The alternative is to take greater responsibility for our health, as we are all here doing. If you think alternative meds are expensive now, wait till the medical industry controls it. Obsess.  Compulse. Good luck

No real discernible symptoms, at least early on. Must be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. I doubt that inhaled steroids alone will lead to this type of problem. — Mark Feblowitz,   GTE Laboratories Inc., 40 Sylvan Rd.  Waltham, MA 02254

prenisone will raise your blood pressure too, so I’m not surprised that it raised the pressure in your eyes, and I would see if you could get on an inhaled steroid like Flovent.

I looked up prednisone in my US Pharmacopeia. Quoting "Glaucoma–Corticosteroids may cause the pressure within the eye to increase." My advice is to switch from the low doseage oral prednisone (5mg/day) and Vanceril corticosteroid inhaler, to the new high strength inhaled corticosteroid Flovent, which will result in a much lower (factor of 10 or more) systemic (side) effect. The high strength corticosteroid inhaler approved in the US which has the lowest systemic effect is reputed to be Flovent (comes in 3 strengths, 44, 110 & 220 ug, you would probably use the Flovent 220). The point is get off the oral steroid. The older highstrenth Aerobid or new double strength Vanceril 84 would be an improvement, but Flovent would be the best. Another inhaler to consider is Serevent, a long acting bronchodilator. The 1997 Expert Panel Report recommends use of Serevent as a steroid sparing drug (use of Serevent reduces need for corticosteroid inhalers). A good reference for the latest asthma treatments is ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’ by Francis Adams, MD c96. Good luck,

I really wish I could help out, but I’m not even in the States. Is there a reason why the landlord wants the dogs gone?  Maybe you could work out some arrangement with him to let you keep the dogs while you look for a new place. Best of luck to you. Ann

I don’t think you can. We’re moving four days after our wedding to Boston (3,000 miles), and we’re just going to ship stuff we get. All of the furniture we have is very bad, so we’re either selling it or giving it to Goodwill (if they’ll take them :-) ). We expect to get some cash gifts, though, but to offset shipping costs, we registered at Macy’s and Crate and Barrel, which are national, and just so happen to be wherever our guests are located (they are scattered all over the US). One option for them is to buy the gift, wait until we have found our new apartment, and send it to us there. It’s not *proper* to ask for cash instead of gifts. It looks as if you are greedy. Hopefully, your friends will make that logical decision to give you cash instead of gifts, but if they don’t, please don’t worry about it. You’ve got more things to worry about than how heavy your gifts will be. Laurel and Jack, 5/25/96

Sorry, there’s no nice way to tell people you want a gift at all, let alone that you want cash or a gift certificate.  You’re supposed to act surprised and delighted when you get a gift of any kind!  If you just can’t live with this, the only thing you might be able to do is whisper to a talkative friend that you’ll be needing lots of money for the move and hope she or he will spread the word. –Nancy Reynolds

Question:

Alec, What would be considered a supraphysio dose? Would inhaling FLOVENT 110mcg twice in the am and twice in the pm over a three week period be sufficient to affect my testostorone level to the point of extremely low labido? Once the FLOVENT is stopped would my body rebuild to its normal testostorne levels over time or is this permamanent damage? I know something has changed in me. I know my body very well and I know and feel I am not right. I love and desire my lady but I am not reacting the way I use to. I honestly don’t know! What is the normal dose of FLOVENT? What is the right dose for you? Virtually everything that I take would be at a supraphisiologic dose to the rest of the folks in this group! now something has changed in me. I know my body very well and I know and feel I am not right. I love and desire my lady but I am not reacting the way I use to. Something serious has happened to you and that uro is an idiot. Somehow, something has shut down within you. From your description I’d say that you need an endocrinologist with a specialty in andrology. I only know of 3 in that category – Dr Bain in Toronto, Dr Shippen and Dr Kryger – and only have experience with the one in Toronto. Dr Bain does see non-Canadians and, if you want some relief from the oppresive heat of Florida, you could arrange to see him. To get an idea of how good that I think he is – if he was a car mechanic working on my car, I’d enter a go-kart in the Indy 500.

Response:

Chip.. I’m sorry about your lousy experience with your Uro. My advice is get the hell away immediately from anyone with that attitude. Don’t let it go on and pay more money to the jerk. Continue asking about others in your area. I think there are websites for finding such specialists. Perhaps someone knows the URL.

The Life Extension Foundation, which is run by people who take drugs to extend their lifespan (a practice which many in the medical community look at askance, I assure you), keeps a Directory of Innovative Doctors at http://www.lef.org. Many of these physicians are themselves life extensionists. Finding a physician who is a life extensionist will almost surely mean that you’ve found a doctor that is more than willing to attack problems aggressively and creatively. Caveat emptor. Nobody knows how all of this stuff will turn out in the end. I wish you well, C/

I am a male 50 year old who noticed I was becoming semi-hard with the morning erection approx 1 year ago. I could engage in intercourse as long as my penis had stimulation and once into intercourse had no problem ejaculating. Masturbation was never a problem. About three (week of 13DEC99) weeks ago I came down with bronchitis and was given a perscription for to fight the infection and FLOVENT 110mcg Aerosol inh. 13gm (fluticasone propionate, a glucocorticoid) two times in the morning and two at night to be taken for two months. I started on 21DEC99. Sunday 2JAN00 I had trouble mantaining an erection during intercourse. I was concern the Flovent was affecting my desire so I stopped on 3JAN00. This can be due to several causes. Possibilitiess include hormonal, vascular or neural. Glucocorticoids can, if you get a supraphysiological dose, cause testosterone to drop to very low levels. Sunday 2JAN00 I had trouble mantaining an erection during intercourse. I was concern the Flovent was affecting my desire so I stopped on 3JAN00. Today I have practically no labido and no erection. I plan to visit the urologist on Fri 7JAN00. Do you think the FLOVENT might have had an impact?

It could have accelerated an existing problem. The low libido can be due to low dopamine or low testosterone or low libido or androgen insensitivity. Some of these can be tested for with ease. No erection can be plumbing. Low libido is usually chemical. Get your URO to test the following: Total testosterone Free testosterone LH FSH Prolactin Estradiol Zinc TSH T3 T4 Get the values and ranges and bring them back here. Do NOT accept "normal" as an answer. "Normal" includes impotent 85-year-olds (impotence is considered normal at 85). By bringing them back here, you’ll get umpteen people jumping in to help with advice as to what to do next. Don’t worry about the values being embarassing – you won’t beat what mine were (testosterone level that qualified me as a harem gaurd, estradiol higher than a woman pregnant with octuplets). Now my testosterone/libido are enough to make me want to rape a doorknob! What you want is to get your system into gear. The rapid onset is suspicious. Are you on any other meds?

Inhaled steroids can result in localized infections with Candida albicans in the mouth and pharynx.  Have it cultured and treated, then when you use your steriod inhaler rinse your mouth out after each use.  Be sure to clean the canister daily.   Nicole – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Help! Being the "Queen Of Thrush", it sounds like that is what you have,of course the usual disclaimer (I am not a doctor….) Nystatin swish and swallow is a good start. If you still have it after that ask for Diflucan. There is also a new swish and swallow of AmphotericinB but that is when you have exhausted all other things. I’m sure that I do not have to say, rinse your mouth, blah, blah blah. Some people are just prone to thrush and you learn to deal with it. It’s pretty nasty but, brathing is better, Peace, Tish

Yes yes yes!!! this is almost identical to what i had two weeks ago.  i was on flovent/serevent and antibiotics (doxycycline…destroyed my intestines. very sad. not doing those again)  i got a sharp, painful sore throat, almost as if someone had cut a part of my throat with a knife.  my tongue was painfully sore and had desnuded patches (the taste buds were gone) on about half, and white patches on the rest. i didn’t have any cheese particles but that seems to make it almost definite (as that’s the clear sign of a vaginal yeast infection!) i went in to the college health center and said "i’m on antibiotics and a steroid inhaler, i think i have a yeast infection in my mouth".  the doctor looked it over, told me i was right, said she probably would have treated me for strep with more antibiotics if i hadn’t figured it out on my own (another reason to be super-informed…).  she put me on nystatin liquid, 1 tsp 3 times a day for 5 days.  it went away although i’m a bit nervous that it’s not completely gone. (last night i felt the sore thoat again for a bit…and i’ve lost the upper register of my voice…)  the liquid was lovely, tasted like minty robitussin, but did the job.   good luck! jodi

I had a mild yeast infection before I went to the allergist, but did not associate any spreading of the condition when I was taking all this medicine. I could not reach my doctor today to talk to him. Am supposed to call him back Monday. My throat is so irritated from all this coughing from this infection. Michelle in TX

Are you positive it’s a yeast infection? Has the dog had them in the past and this was confirmed and treated by your vet?  If not, go to the vet to be sure this is what she has. I have an old (14) lhasa who has had chronic yeast infections his entire life.  About 6 or 7 years ago, on one of my many trips in to see our vet, he suggested using Monostat on him, when his ears got re-infected. If you’re sexually active, your partner(s) should be treated as well — otherwise you could be getting re-infected with each act of sex.  Heck, I suppose it’s even possible that you could get a penile yeast infection from fellatio performed by someone with oral thrush. Singulair side effect

Question:

About a week after taking Singular it feels as though I have a lump in my throat.  I’m not sure if this is a side effect so if anybody else has experienced this I’d like to know.  Would it help for my to switch to Accolate. Thanks for any info.

Hopefully it isn’t an abcess like the one that just about killed me.  No reason for it to be an abcess — mine may have been caused by frostbite — but if should you start having severe choking episodes then get to an ER and have it checked out.

I just started on Sigulair this past week and after 16 months on Accolate I find it MUCH more effective. No lingering tightness, no consistent light wheezing, its wonderful..almost like Theo again.  What are some of the other side effects..(Dr gave me 2 week sample to try) Bill

Thanks for any info. I have a lump in my throat also.   I thought it was from increasing the

Flovent from 8 puffs of 110 to 8 puffs of 220, so I have been cutting back on the Flovent, I haven’t noticed any changes in the lump.  I did go to the Dr. and she didn’t see anything abnormal in my throat.  Since this is the height of asthma/allergy season here I am reluctant to go off Singulair,  I had rash on my arms with Accolate.  Let me know what you do, if you stop Singulair and the lump goes away.  I hope the lump isn’t anything serious because for now I have decided to learn to live with the it.  Pam – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

I found Singulair worked quite well in lessening need forVentolin, but it caused edema, esp. swollen ankles.  I kept with it for about 4 months since doctors denied this as a side effect. (Doesn’t seem so strange to me since the generic name is M. Sodium)…

Montelukast Sodium http://www.merck.com/product/usa/singulair/cns/prescribing_info/descr… l has a chemical formula of C35 H35 Cl N Na O3 S, it has a molecular weight of 608.18 Daltons (one Dalton is approximately the weight of one hydrogen atom).  Sodium has a molecular weight of 23 Daltons.  That means that sodium accounts for 3.78% of the Montelukast total weight (23/608.18=3.78%).  There are 10 mg of Montelukast Sodium in a tablet of Singulair, that means there are 0.378 mg of Sodium in a Singulair tablet (10 mg x 3.78%=0.378 mg). There are 7.3 mg of Sodium in a single Bite Size tortilla chip of a popular name brand.  I’m not an MD but it is hard for me to imagine that 0.387 mg of Sodium is enough to make one’s ankle swell.  Perhaps it is a reaction to the carbohydrate portion of the molecule.

asparin induced asthma. What is the treatment?

Question:

My wife has been diagnosed as asthmatic. She thinks that she may have had her attack due to the use of NSAID’s (including asparin). A webpage suggests that the treatment for asparin induced asthma is different to the normal treatment. She is not responding well to normal treatment so if anyone knows what the treatment is for asparin induced asthma we would appreciate the help. Thank you.  Drew.

Response:

I get asthma from all NSAIDS, including aspirin, ibuprophen, ponstan, etc.  My asthma is not controlled differently than anyone elses, I just have to avoid all NSAIDS and products containing them.  I take Flovent 125mcg, Serevent, and Ventolin.  Singulair did nothing for me, but it works wonders for other people especially those with allergies from what I have read.  Good luck! Meghan Before you buy.

Response:

Aspirin induces asthma in about 10% of asthmatics. About 10% of those will also react to other NSAIDS such as Motirn/ Advil/ Aleve/ ibuprofen/ etc. (Lucky me – in the top 1% again !) The treatment is not entirely different. As in all asthmatics exposures should be eliminated, in this case only take Tylenol and narcotics for pain. One difference is that the leukotriene inhibitors such as Singulair and Accolate seem to be particularly effective in aspirin sensitive asthmatics so this may be worth a try. If that doesn’t work it should be back to the drawing board by confirming the diagnosis if in doubt and looking for other triggers such as chemicals, allergy, reflux, and sinus problems. — CBI, M.D. Please note: It is impossible to accurately diagnose medical problems without seeing the patient and reviewing the entire history. Question:

Hi there, I used to think the exact same thing.  But, not anymore.  I can’t do this with the aid and assistance of meds.  I am beginning to believe that it is all in my head.  I will still be able to "feel" things, but it won’t be as strong.  I think I am finally coming into my own person.  I just want to be the old me, and if medication will do that and help me accomplish that, then I will be forever grateful. Kelly

Response:

to me, the first step to recovery, is to not need any meds.  we can do this without the assistance of meds.

Response:

Hi…I don’t know what your docs are thinking, but Prozac can cause weight loss.  If prescribed for a person with ed, it’s usually bulimia since this med can help the b/p urges.  I also asked my dr about Zyban and she wouldn’t give it to me b/c apparently it can cause seizures in people with eds.  I think you should ask your docs about switching you to Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor or something else that doesn’t have a high incidence of weight loss as a side effect, but probably not Wellbutrin…the seizure side effect was scary enough to me to forget that idea.  Good luck.  H.

Response:

Poeople with ED’s should NOT take Wellbutrin, unless specifically directed by a physician who is  fully aware of the ED To email, leave off the "xyz"

Response:

Here is an entry from my ‘Journal’: (spoilered for drug and other info) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On the news this morning they did a thing about Wellbutrin (which is the

same as Zyban) to stop smoking.. I did a little research online and something ‘clicked’…    the dr.’s keep telling me to take my pills, but then tell me they don’t know much about anorexia and what to do about it and stuff..  They don’t seem to see a connection… for anorexia i read that you need to let the person know they are loved

and wanted and have worth..  I keep telling myself that, and i do believe it.. But i think it’s something medical as well… Well..  what ‘clicked’ was when i was reading about Wellbutrin messing

with your ‘pleasure centers’ and replacing other cravings and pleasures in the brain with the drug..  The dopamine thing… Well, ‘hunger’ (for food) is a mild form of ‘craving’…… I no longer

have cravings for foods or even hunger for them, although my body feels/displays the effects of no nutrition.   And the ‘pleasure’ i used to get from foods/tastes/etc. is gone a lot of the time…. Just like the smokers who quit with Zyban, the pleasure of smoking went

away and they were able to quit.. Please, does this make any sense at all?  I am desperate for an answer

before it’s too late…  I started losing the most weight when i started prozac 2 years ago, and the psychs told me it was not the meds doing it. But before that i was never anorexic and i was over 20 pounds heavier than now. i need help to make sense of it, the doc’s won’t listen when i say i need

off meds.. i can’t do it myself, i feel suicidal when i cut the meds.  that scares me becuz that’s not what i want, that’s the meds talking…   i don’t want that at all; i never acted on feelings like that before meds…….but i feel so alone at times…   ignoring the ED doesn’t make it go away…. Does it make sense, my theory about the Wellbutrin and cravings?  I mean,

don’t smokers flll the smoking void with food?.. now they can fill it with Wellbutrin… I have read repeatedly that Wellbutrin is not supposed to be given to anyone with anorexia.  And i never in my life felt TRUE ‘anxiety’ before i was on meds… But my doc’s say that’s not so… Who do i believe???   The stuff i read online is real medical info, not just someone’s personal

opinions..  Are the drug companies paying off the medical ppl, at the expense of the patients???  At $100 a bottle of Wellbutrin, i wouldn’t doubt it… I feel it’s my obligation to find an answer, and then i can help the other

people.

Catherine, I take 150 mgs of Zoloft once a day. It is only supposed to be taken once per day according to all the info I could find. And I’ve done a lot of checking lately. Mary, I think Zoloft may still be a good med for you also!! I’ve been on Zoloft 150 mg/day for 6 years. When I experienced "poop out", instead of switching meds my psychiatrist added Cylert with good results for about 1 year. After that combo pooped out, he discontinued the Cylert and added desipramine 50 mg/day, which I am still on (in addition to Zoloft 150 mg/day). The process of adding a med to Zoloft (or any antidepressant) to make it start working again, or better, is called "augmentation". Too many docs just take you off a med that has been working previously and start you on another, and another, and another etc. Untill they find one that works. I do not know what symptoms you are experiencing when you say "poop out". What I experienced was the onset of depression. And I had good results by staying on Zoloft, but augmenting it with small doses of other meds. Chip Catherine, I take 150 mgs of Zoloft once a day. Desi, if you search Deja news for references to Zoloft you will see a lot of discusion on it. Personally, I wouldn’t read it, however. If you are optimistic the best thing, IMO, is just to take it, follow your doctor’s instructions and see how you get on. snipped for brevity – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – LT is available in 100 g. or larger quantities from veterinary suppliers, at a cost substantially less than prescription LT, though still more than the OTC product once cost. Veterinary LT is molecularly identical to the tryptophan we are interested in here, and purity and quality control are probably higher than most old OTC products. One caveat: if you are taking a SSRI (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor) antidepressent, concurrent LT use is strongly contradicated, as taking both together can produce the potentially lethal ’serotonin syndrome,’ due to toxic levels of 5-HT in the body. –Will

The FDA Ban of                     L-Tryptophan:  Politics,                       Profits and Prozac1*                   By Dean Wolfe Manders, Ph.D.                  Copyright, All Rights Reserved      In the fall of 1989, the FDA recalled L-Tryptophan, an amino acid nutritional supplement, stating that it caused a rare and deadly flu-like condition (Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome — EMS). On March 22, 1990, the FDA banned the public sale dietary of L- Tryptophan completely. This ban continues today.      On March 26, 1990, Newsweek featured a lead article praising the virtues of the anti-depressant drug Prozac. Its multi-color cover displayed a floating, gigantic green and white capsule of Prozac with the caption: "Prozac: A Breakthrough Drug for Depression."      The fact that the FDA ban of L-Tryptophan and the Newsweek Prozac cover story occurred within four days of each other went unnoticed by both the media and the public. Yet, to those who understand the effective properties of L-Tryptophan and Prozac, the concurrence seems "unbelievably coincidental." The link here is the brain neurotransmitter serotonin — a biochemical nerve signal conductor. The action of Prozac and L-Tryptophan are both involved with serotonin, but in totally different ways.      Elevated levels of serotonin in the body often result in the relief of depression, as well as substantial reduction in pain sensitivity, anxiety and stress. Prozac, as well as other new anti- depressant drugs such as Paxil and Zoloft, attempt to enhance levels of serotonin by working on whatever amounts of it already exist in the body (these drugs are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). None of these drugs, however, produce serotonin. In contrast, ingested L-Tryptophan acts to produce serotonin, even in individuals who generate little serotonin of their own. The most effective way to elevate levels of serotonin would be to use a serotonin producer rather than a serotonin enhancer.      The continuing FDA public ban of L-Tryptophan prevents popular access to this most effective serotonin producer. The millions of Americans who for decades safely had relied upon L-Tryptophan to relieve depression, anxiety and PMS, as well as to control pain and induce natural sleep, have been forced elsewhere for solutions. Routinely, such solutions are pharmaceutical in nature: people are forced to use either often highly addictive, expensive, and some- times dangerous drugs like Xanax, Valium, Halcion, Dalmane, Co- deine, Anafranil, Prozac, and others, or, simply suffer.      Present FDA public policy maintains that L-Tryptophan is an untested, unapproved and hazardous drug. The analytical work done a few years ago by the Centers for Disease Control and the Mayo Clinic, research which traced the fall 1989 outbreak of the serious flu-like condition to contaminants found in batches of L-Tryptophan made by the Japanese company Showa Denko, has not convinced the FDA to allow L-Tryptophan back on the market. This decision is based primarily on the research of FDA and NIMH scientists who state that L-Tryptophan itself, irrespective of contaminants, is a dangerous substance. Other university-based research scientists disagree with these findings.      The public availability of L-Tryptophan is too important an issue only to be argued and shrouded within a scientific debate that remains, ultimately, mystifying to the vast majority of Americans. There are many obvious facts worthy of public attention, and public concern. For example, consider the following:      ~ On February 9, 1993, a United States government patent (#5185157) was issued to use L-Tryptophan to treat, and cure EMS, the very same deadly flu-like condition which prompted the FDA to take L-Tryptophan off the market in 1989.      ~ Notwithstanding its public ban and import alert on L- Tryptophan, the FDA today allows Ajinomoto U.S.A. the right to import from Japan human-use L-Tryptophan.  Distributed from the Ajinomoto plant in Raleigh, North Carolina, the L-Tryptophan is then sold to, and through, a network of compounding pharmacies across the United States. Purchased by individuals only under a physician’s order, L-Tryptophan emerges here as a new prescription drug in the serotonin marketplace; one hundred 500 mg capsules cost about $75.00, approximately five times more than if they were sold as a dietary supplement.      Since the FDA holds the political mandate and power of a public regulatory agency established, ostensibly, to protect people from raw corporate interests in drug production and distribution, the actions of the FDA in concert with Ajinomoto U.S.A. are illumi- nating. By publicly banning L-Tryptophan from its dietary supple- ment status and price, while allowing L-Tryptophan to be sold as a high-priced prescription drug, the naked duplicity of FDA L- Tryptophan policy is revealed.      ~ During and after the 1989 EMS outbreak, the FDA did not totally ban the use of L-Tryptophan in humans — then, as today, the FDA has granted the pharmaceutical industry the protected right to use L-Tryptophan in hospital settings.  Manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, the amino acid injectable solutions Aminosyn and Aminosyn II contain as much as 200 mg of L-Tryptophan.  (Moreover, L-Tryptophan has never been removed from baby food produced and sold within the United States.)      ~ While the FDA has banned the public sale and use of safe, non-contaminated, dietary supplement L-Tryptophan for people, the United States Department of Agriculture still sanctions the legal sale and use of non-contaminated L-Tryptophan for animals.  Today, as in the past, feed grade L-Tryptophan continues to be used as a nutritional and bulk feed additive by the commercial hog and chicken farming industry.  Additionally, L-Tryptophan is now available for use by veterinarians in caring for horses and pets.   ~ Outside of the United States, in countries such as Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, England, and others, L-Tryptophan is widely used. Nowhere, have any serious or widespread health problems occurred.      At bottom, the FDA public ban of safe, non-contaminated L- Tryptophan is uneven, expensive, and biased in favor of the phar- maceutical industry. The FDA proscription effectively awards billions of dollars in profits to pharmaceutical companies and their suppliers in the same proportion as it adds billions of unnecessary dollars to the nation’s already bloated health care expenditures.      On June 15, 1993, the FDA Dietary Supplement Task Force published a report on the work it had been doing in the area of developing FDA policy around nutritional supplements. On page two, the report admits, "The Task Force considered various issues in its deliberations, including… what steps are necessary to ensure that the existence of dietary supplements on the market does not act as a disincentive for drug development."      In this case, the FDA has succeeded in carrying out its stated policy goal. With competition from publicly available L-Tryptophan removed, the rapidly expanding market in prescription serotonin drugs — now among them L-Tryptophan itself — contains no major "disincentives" for the massive accumulation of pharmaceutical industry profits.      It is now time for appropriate congressional committees to review openly and aggressively the entire matter of L-Tryptophan. This will provide a needed forum where political, corporate, and scientific issues of FDA L-Tryptophan regulatory policy may be addressed. There exists ample precedent for such hearings: in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, for example, such investigations uncovered FDA favoritism in the approval of generic drugs and the bribery of FDA officials.      The story of L-Tryptophan illustrates a sad and perverse picture of the politics and priorities of public health in America: A safe, dietary-supplement serotonin producer is publicly unavailable to people, while daily fed to animals by corporate agribusiness.  A drug patent is approved to use L-Tryptophan to cure the very condition the FDA claims it caused.  And, while publicly exclaiming that L-Tryptophan is a dangerous and untested drug, the FDA, more quietly, allows human-use L-Tryptophan to be imported, and then marketed and sold by the pharmaceutical industry.       To allow the FDA ban of L-Tryptophan to continue unreviewed and uninvestigated condemns millions of Americans to unnecessary financial expenditures and needless suffering.      1.  This article appeared in Social Policy, Vol. 26, No. 2, Winter 1995.  Dean Wolfe Manders is a senior lecturer in humanities and sciences at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland/San Francisco.  He has lectured and done extensive research on the medical politics of L-Tryptophan.      *Blazing Tattles, June 96.  Responses to the above article may be quoted in future issues unless writer explicitly requests otherwise.  For information about Blazing Tattles send inquiry to: Tattles at P.O. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yet, to those who understand the effective properties of L-Tryptophan and Prozac, the concurrence seems "unbelievably coincidental." The link here is the brain neurotransmitter serotonin — a biochemical nerve signal conductor.

Agreed that SSRIs and LTryptophan both work on serotonin. I have used both with good results. The distinction needs to be made that some depressions are more neurologic, others more hormonal or enzymatic. In cases of the former, SSRIs generally work much better, and in the latter, LT works better. I also agree that the continuing FDA ban looks suspicious, and it ought to be lifted immediately. LT is available in 100 g. or larger quantities from veterinary suppliers, at a cost substantially less than prescription LT, though still more than the OTC product once cost. –Will
