Question:

Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how.   Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico,

I doubt it’s an option to lower the costs to as low as they are in Mexico. If such a regulation were to be passed they’d just raise the price in Mexico to what’s being charged here and folks in Mexico would just have to do without. If you cut down the ability of a drug company to get return on investment too much you just won’t see any more investment and hence no more new drugs. Many drugs costs millions to develop and either never see the market or get pulled from the market within months due to newly discovered problems. If drug companies had it so easy everyone would own one. Don’t push too hard for the government to step in unless you want similar controls & interference with your industry too. — Don Elton Columbia, SC http://www.midcarolina.org

Response:

I assume all the "alternative" treatment proponents on USenet will be totally against this petition since they mostly claim that they would be happy to operate under the same regulations as pharmaceutical companies

Well, I’d be against it.  Over the years I’ve found some companies that make a point of standardising their products.  Last thing I want is another layer or six of bureaucrats leeching off of these companies and justifying their expensive lifestyles by promulgating more regulations that will end by jacking up the prices of these products.   There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly.  Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups.  Much like it’s done here.  I trust the posters here a lot farther than some bureaucrat whose boss accepts money from pharmaceutical companies. Over all I like the current set up.  It’s inexpensive, and unconnected with the horrendously expensive medical-industrial combine–so far.   Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation?  I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic.  I went to GNC to look at Chitosan for the heck of it and I believe the small bottle was $29.00 or $39.00.  I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive. In fact, I watched a documentary about death and dying.  Several people had turned to alternative products and were spending several hundred dollars *per month* on herbs and vitamins.  What a rip off… and by the way no one survived. Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive! Patrice

But to what standard?  A year or so ago a local newspaper sent ’standardized’ herbal extracts to a lab for testing.  They discovered that these ’standardized’ extracts contained anywhere from 20% to 140% of what the manufacturers claimed. Then how can you trust companies that have worked very hard to get themselves excluded from just about all sort of laws protecting the medical consumer?  A McDonalds hamburger is subject to stricter regulations relating to food safety, purity and content. And of course it is inexpensive, it is always cheaper to skip the safety testing.  So what if you are using your customers as guinea pigs? I suggest that you use the same scepticism you apply towards real medicine when you look at the alternative crowd.   Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation?  I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I just spent a couple of years under Kaiser HMO.  I was very satisfied with the care.  I found them to be very aggressive about preventative medicine and ensuring my asthma was under excellent control. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."    General Colin Powell

Response:

Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive!

Dosen’t mean that it is safe either.  Try to get somebody marketing ephedra products to give you an honest safety warning. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."    General Colin Powell

Response:

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic.  I went to GNC to look at Chitosan

So you have a co pay?  What is the ‘real’ cost of your meds?  Your employer and ultimately you and the people in your insurance pool bear the cost of those meds by your fees.  How much more would be in your paycheck if it weren’t for the high fees charged by the medical industry and it’s bureaucratic overseers? Just because the cost is taken out of your wages before you see it so you "won’t feel it" doesn’t mean you’re not paying through the nose. Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how.  Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico, our faithful legislators are fed re- election dollars by the pharm industries (can you smell the peanuts on their breath?)  so they can make billions charging higher prices for those on medicare, etc.  You and I pay for that, too.  And that’s taken out of your wages, too, before you can see it.   As a business owner, I can darn well see it. I don’t resent paying taxes and fica, but I sure do resent it when  big business pays off legislators to pass laws so they can suck up tax dollars that I have to pay. Rant.  Rave. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive.

Yeah.  It can be.  You have to do your research.  Don’t know what chitosan is, but  some companies do charge way more than their stuff is worth.  And there are always vultures looking to make money off the dying. On that, I have to repeat, do your research.  I have found certain companies that produce inxpensive but effective compounds that I have patronised over the years.  I have befriended both a western traditional herb store owner where I live, and a Chinese herb shop owner in NYC.  I have read dozens of books over the years, as well as many articles on the internet.  Some people don’t or can’t spend the time and effort to do this, and they will remain the prey of the con man or the medical industry.  The alternative is to take greater responsibility for our health, as we are all here doing. If you think alternative meds are expensive now, wait till the medical industry controls it. Obsess.  Compulse. Good luck

Go to an optromitist (sp?) you are tested for glaucoma as part of a routine eye exam. ‘Reply to’ address changed to foil email spammers.

No real discernible symptoms, at least early on. Must be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. I doubt that inhaled steroids alone will lead to this type of problem. — Mark Feblowitz,   GTE Laboratories Inc., 40 Sylvan Rd.  Waltham, MA 02254

prenisone will raise your blood pressure too, so I’m not surprised that it raised the pressure in your eyes, and I would see if you could get on an inhaled steroid like Flovent.

I looked up prednisone in my US Pharmacopeia. Quoting "Glaucoma–Corticosteroids may cause the pressure within the eye to increase." My advice is to switch from the low doseage oral prednisone (5mg/day) and Vanceril corticosteroid inhaler, to the new high strength inhaled corticosteroid Flovent, which will result in a much lower (factor of 10 or more) systemic (side) effect. The high strength corticosteroid inhaler approved in the US which has the lowest systemic effect is reputed to be Flovent (comes in 3 strengths, 44, 110 & 220 ug, you would probably use the Flovent 220). The point is get off the oral steroid. The older highstrenth Aerobid or new double strength Vanceril 84 would be an improvement, but Flovent would be the best. Another inhaler to consider is Serevent, a long acting bronchodilator. The 1997 Expert Panel Report recommends use of Serevent as a steroid sparing drug (use of Serevent reduces need for corticosteroid inhalers). A good reference for the latest asthma treatments is ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’ by Francis Adams, MD c96. Good luck,

My immediate plans are to add a 2-3" body lift, and larger wheels/tires, so I I might need the added power to keep the status quo. Thanks in advance. Dave

Hi I live in Las Vegas, Nv. I have to rotties that I love and adore, however my Landlord has given my husband and I an eviction notice unless we get rid of the dogs… I refuse to get rid of my dogs, but I don’t have anywhere to go just yet.. I need to know if there is anyone in Las Vegas or the near surroundings who would be able to take in 2 Rotts for a month at the very most… I don’t have a ton of money or I would put them in a kennel (it cost so much!), but I am willing to make monthly payments. I would buy the food and any other neccesities.. I would also come by to walk, play, and/or groom too. PLease if there’s anyone who can help me contact me at: -Heather

I don’t think you can. We’re moving four days after our wedding to Boston (3,000 miles), and we’re just going to ship stuff we get. All of the furniture we have is very bad, so we’re either selling it or giving it to Goodwill (if they’ll take them :-) ). We expect to get some cash gifts, though, but to offset shipping costs, we registered at Macy’s and Crate and Barrel, which are national, and just so happen to be wherever our guests are located (they are scattered all over the US). One option for them is to buy the gift, wait until we have found our new apartment, and send it to us there. It’s not *proper* to ask for cash instead of gifts. It looks as if you are greedy. Hopefully, your friends will make that logical decision to give you cash instead of gifts, but if they don’t, please don’t worry about it. You’ve got more things to worry about than how heavy your gifts will be. Laurel and Jack, 5/25/96

Sorry, there’s no nice way to tell people you want a gift at all, let alone that you want cash or a gift certificate.  You’re supposed to act surprised and delighted when you get a gift of any kind!  If you just can’t live with this, the only thing you might be able to do is whisper to a talkative friend that you’ll be needing lots of money for the move and hope she or he will spread the word. –Nancy Reynolds

Flovent – bruising

Question:

I hadn’t thought of iron levels being low, but I’ll suggest that he have those checked out next doc visit.  DH is 64, and as we age, not only do our appetites decrease, but also  our absorption of nutrients. Rose – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – But usually when I notice i’m bruising more, i make sure to have my iron level checked, because that is also a common problem that has the same results; probably more often in young women than men but.. who knows. my two cents. K

Response:

i was concerned about this too. i’ve been taking flovent for a few years (before that, aerobid, azmacort, etc).. i bruise very easily, i’m a big fan of arnica too. I actually ran into someone at a pharmacy who was asking about people who take flovent, and since I was there to pick mine up I spoke up. Turns out she works for glaxo-welcom selling it and hadn’t talked to a lot of people who used it. Anyways I mentioned a few side effects, such as bruising, lower bone-density, etc, that are common with steroids, and basically she said that because they are inhaled corti-costeroids and not quite the same as pill popping ones like prednisone, those kinds of effects should be pretty much negligible. Granted she does work for the company.. My own doctor was able to reduce my Flovent when I went in asking about bruising; i’d had a particularly clumsy week.. But usually when I notice i’m bruising more, i make sure to have my iron level checked, because that is also a common problem that has the same results; probably more often in young women than men but.. who knows. my two cents. K – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi. Dh uses Flovent and other inhalers, and they do contain steroids, which does cause thinning of the skin and yes, he does bruise easily.  Seems that he’s bruising more easily lately. The arnica works?  I use it and I’ll see if he will.  Thanks for the suggestion. Rose

I’ve had trouble with brusing, but i didn’t know that it was related to using flovent.  I’m on 220 one puff twice a day (it was 2 puffs 2x daily, but they are trying to decrease it, so far no probs).  I always thought it was something wrong with me.  wow.  kris

I don’t know why docs don’t mention this to patients since it can be common esp. with FLovent. Just wait until it happens, I guess. Some docs may not even know about Arnica. But they should.

Response:

I use Flovent inhaler – 2-3 puffs twice a day. Does anyone have the bruising who use these inhalers? Supposedly thins the skin. Some spots are spontaneous  —- others – if you bump your arm are really noticeable. Large bruise type spots under the skin.  I have been using Arnica (cream or gel to rub on those spots to make them go away faster). It helps — but I don’t like these spots on my arms. Side effects of MDI inhalers can be minimized by using a spacer, such as an Aerochamber. Cuts side effects by factor of 2. Also advisable to rinse, gargle, spit out, after inhaling.

I have used a spacer ever since I started on Flovent – over a year ago. (And rinse and gargle really good.)

Response:

Do you also take at least one aspirin per day?  I have been using Flovent for several years, but not until I was put on an asprin regimen did I get the bruise spots.  It is the apirin that thins the blood. Israel Weber

No, no aspirin. The Flovent thins the –skin.

Response:

What is Arnica, and where do you get it? I am on Flovent and also easily bruised. The least little tap leaves a mark. If I bump into something, I really have some black and blue marks.

I get it at an organic food store. But I would imagine maybe you could get it at some health food stores — or check your local drugfood store. It comes in gel and cream. It DOES work. Takes a few days but the color of the bruise lightens and eventually is gone. I have more on my wrists than anywhere.

Hello, I use Flovent 220 one puff two times daily and I bruise horribly.  I wake up with small round bruises and if I bump into something the resultant bruise is really large and painful.  Gross.  I can’t do without the Flovent, tho. So, guess it’s a trade-off. I wish, wish, wish someone would come up with an inhaled anti-inflammatory or like drug with no side effects like bruising, weight gain and the like. It would be nice to shed the 35 pounds I’ve put on since being diagnosed with asthma and taking all the meds. Patrice

Question about Spacers

Question:

I am using Serevent and Flovent 220 mcg, 2 puffs of each in the morning and then again in the evening.  I use the InspirEase spacer to take my medication.  Both medications state they contain enough medication for 120 puffs, which for me is a months worth of medication.  However, I have noticed that after a month instead of the cannisters being almost empty they are still half full.  I put them in water to measure them.  I am wondering why this is.  Could it be that the InspirEase doesn’t extract enough of the medicatiion from the cannister with each puff? How exactly does InspirEase work? All the spacers I’ve ever used simply had an opening on one end for the inhaler (where the mouth would usually be if not using a spacer) and an opening for me to breathe from. If that’s the case with InspirEase, then it wouldn’t make any difference in the amount of medicine that comes out when you press the canister down. I had actually read on some inhalers (might have been serevent, but I don’t remember) that that water measuring trick wasn’t very accurate and the best thing to do was keep track of how much you’re using. Also, is it possible that you have forgot to take every dose in a given month?

Exactly..the only difference is that it has accordian -like folds and collapses as you take the meds…;

The canisters are otherwise with propellant in order to ensure that the first actuation with have the same pressure as the 120th actuation.  The problem is that after 120 doses all you will be getting is propellant with no medication. No electrons were harmed in the posting of this message.

Question:

Paul, perhaps try some Paxil instead of prozac. If you are Bipolar, try some Lamictal <sp which has some anti-depressant properties. This is what helps my seasonal depression to some degree. (this has not been a good year for me, since my Mother passed away January 2003) Hugs, Ralph

It does? My pdoc gave me some. I’m taking Paxil currently. I feel like depression is often at the core of my problems. MorphGrrl

Response:

Yes, Lamictal is a mood stableizer with some anti-depressant properties. You will discover that my Bipolar Disorder takes the unenviable configuration of  98% depression, 1% "normal" (whatever that is?), and 1% mixed states, irritable depression, also known as "Rotten Ralph" <grin.

I tend to get euphoric at times and learned how bring it out in some way. But it still is much depression even if slightly now. I did better in sales today at work so that made me happier. Before I went to work I was a teeny bit ho hum in a sense, but looking at sites that made me laugh a little, helped my mood. Remembering it’s Valentine’s day makes my mood go in a roller coaster. Over all it’s not a bad dip because of the meds, but annoying in a sense. I’m the serial hugger, today. Hugs, Ralph

Ahhhhh, thanks Ralph! MorphGrrl

Response:

Every so often I go into deep drepressive cycles. I don’t want to be depressed. I live on Wellbutrin, Xanax, and Seroquel for sleeping at night. However, I can’t shake it. It’s like drowning or being smothered by a wet blanket. I manage to work, but I engage in self destructive behavior. Certain external things must trigger the depresssion, but it’s also got to be chemical.  The last time this stuff happened was the end of August, beginning of September. I ended up overdosing on xanax and spent a couple of days in the hospital detoxing. It was a very stressful and not very helpful experience. People on this board were very helpful in suggesting strongly help. Some of the earlier stressful things are moot.  The psychiatrist said he thought I had something like a post traumatic stress syndrome, whatever that exactly means. I’ve had life-long depression; and I finally found, I think a therapist who can deal with all of the abuse issues, if I can make it until some problems are solved, if they are solveable.  I’m one of those rare middle aged males who feel better when they’ve cut themselves.  There are some days when I feel that I can’t turn myself off and I get little sleep for days and then the deep depression returns.  The doctor insists I’m not bi-polar.     Should I suggest upping the Wellbutrin dosage from 300 mg to 400?   This stuff can be dangerous. I’ve already taken tricyclics, trazodone, prozac, effexor (horrible to quit), and even large amounts of lithium (which I"ve overdosed on twice, so maybe taking it isn’t a great idea)   as a  mood stabilizer plus some klonopin and other meds over the years. The Wellbutrin helped at first. However, after a year or so of it the effects seem to be less effective.     I guess what I really want to know is can one put Humpty Dumpty back together again?  Maybe some of us are really too damaged goods. I’m really depressed with unexplained cyring fits yet. I’m so tired of  this routine. I undermine good things and compliments just make me more depressed.     I only write to this board when I’m in a crisis, which doesn’t make me a very helpful person. However, if someone could offer some hope, I’d appreciate it.  People were exceptionally helpful last September.  Maybe just writing to this address makes me feel better. I even took up excercising. I seem to be doing everything right, but I still feel so depressed; and cutting myself with razor blades, even if I’m just nicking myself and drawing blood, can’t be a good omen. I do feel better though.  If  I sound confused I am; and, I’m tired. Can a person live indefinitely on Wellbutrin, Xanax, and Seroquel?  It doesn’t sound like a constructive way of life.     Thanks for any suggestions,        Paul

Gonna try CBT,ever do it?

Question:

Hi all, My shrink firmly believes that I am feeding my own panic and I think he may have a point.  This is coming from a girl whose had this crappy disorder for 17 years and thought she had no fear left.  Lately I find that the increased zoloft dose I’m on helps, but in no way like it used to. The klonopin I took for three months helped a great deal, but I was told it wasn’t good to stay on and is hell to come off.  Since I want to have a baby in 3 years, and can only do it on 50mg of zoloft or less I decided to try CBT.  I’m tired of popping pills, tired of relapses trying to get off meds, tired of coming all this way and falling down.  I haven’t tried CBT yet, and have heard good things about it. HAVE YOU EVER DONE IT..AND IF SO DID IT HELP AT ALL? It’s expensive, but it’s a good investment.  What could be better than investing in your health?  Even if it works I’m gonna stay at a low dose of zoloft, cause I learned the hard way that coming totally off can be a bad descision, and getting back on it isn’t as effective.  I beleive in the mind/body link and think this could help me.  WHAT DO YOU THINK? Always, AD

AD, What I learned in therapy (CBT) kept me out of the hospital the end of December, when I went into one of my spiraling, deep depressions.   It was the first time I’ve ever been that sick and was able to bounce back without a hospitalization.  It has helped me VERY much.  I hope you have as much success with it as I have.  I am very glad that I got a therapist that knew how to counsel me in it.

Hi Deb, Thanks for letting me know how CBT worked for you.  I am very excited about starting, but it is so expensive and i can’t find a therapist who is totally covered by my insurance.  A lot of CBT therepists I called said they don’t work with insurance companies because the demand for CBT is so high, they don’t have to!  Good for them, bad for me. Always, AD

Response:

Part of CBT is practicing it yourself.  Check out some good books on it and they should help you.  If you see a therapist every few weeks or so the CBT books will help you practice what the therapist offers. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I do hope you have really good success with it. I am a strong advocate of CBT as it helped turn my life around many years ago and 18 months ago after a huge setback. The great thing about it is that even if you have setbacks you can re-apply the strategies you learn. As Mr Anxiety suggested putting the theory into practice is critical. BTW I understand your reluctance to stay on klonopin but it is the other reason I have managed my condition so well. Vanessa

My pdoc is going to start CBT w/me and told my fdoc to not renew my benzo script because it interferes with success and the rate of relapse is higher. Has your dr said anything to this effect?  Lucky me that I got another anti-benzo doc.  Just curious because the thought of not having them if I need it frightens me. — ~Heidi~

There is no hard evidence that CBT without meds works better and has a lower relapse rate than CBT with meds but some CBT hardliners entertain this idea. If you can do without meds that’s great of course but I wouldn’t recommend stopping the regular daily use of a benzo while starting CBT, it tends to muddle the picture IMO. If you take a benzo every now and then *as needed* it can be tried though. What benzo do you take and how often at what dose? I took xanax the whole six months I was in therapy. My therapist didnt have a problem with it. I doubt I would have even gone to the sessions if I couldnt take the medicine. I was also agorophobic at the time and just being away from home for an hour was terrifying to me but taking the xanax before I left allowed me to calm down enough to be able to go. I cant imagine what it would have been like if I didnt have it. Good luck with your CBT and I hope the Pdoc changes his mind and allows you to take the meds if you feel you really need them to get through it. Deb

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, I’m 23 y/o female who has has depression/anxiety all my life…   And I get panic attacks/anxiety attacks…  I don’t get the I’m going to die feeling though so the doc says it’s not true panic attack just anxiety.   I went to the Doctors because I couldn’t function.  No energy, motivation, depression, severe anxiety, can’t concentrate/focus. About the start of  Nov. I was put on Celexa on a Friday morning.   I started taking it and was nausous for 2 days and then I got double vision and couldn’t focus my eyes so I stopped taking that Sunday morning and felt poopy for 2-3 days.. The next friday I got put on Wellbutrin.   That was absolute HELL.   I heard my dog talk and I was insane beyond belief for like 4-5 days and I only took the Wellbutrin for 3 days.   I kept repeating over and over "I’m crazy, I’m crazy".   And I had 3 panic attacks in one day.    So obviously that wasn’t the drug for me.  stopped again.   The Tues-Wed. following the Friday that I was put on the Wellbutrin I had a panic attack in my marriage counseling session.  She helped me go to this Psychiatric place where I met Doctor M. They wanted me to be an in-patient at a Psych Ward.   I said no and they scheduled me an appt w/ Dr. R for 3weeks later.   That same day Doctor M. prescribed me .5mg Klonopin to be taken every 4-6 hours as needed. Klonopin just made me drowsy/semi-drugged.  No good.    So I called back and Dr. M prescribed me Ativan.   I was nervious about taking that so I went on Base (husband is in the military)  and went to a Physicans Assistant-M (PA-M) and he presribed me Zoloft 50mg once a day and Xanax .5mg  3x’s a day that was about Nov. 22.    It started working immediately and I felt great. I had been taking xanax 1-2 times a day when I got really nervous/anxious and over-excited and couldn’t calm down.  I ran out of xanax and called PA-M to get a refill just to last me until my appt w/ the psychiatric nurse Dr. R.  This last friday I went to Dr. R and she decided that I was bi-polar . She was very unorganized and didn’t seem to know her shit.  She kept trying to prescribe medicine for me that I told her had caused me problems in the past.   Kept saying she didn’t like this drug or that drug.  (another doctor had said that in the past also that I was bi-polar possibly.  I think I am more adult ADD than bi-polar though although I have a lot of symptoms for both of them).  So she griped that xanax is a horrible drug and so addictive blah blah blah.  Xanax has been a miracle drug for me.  I felt NORMAL. HUMAN.   It gave me energy and I could concentrate and was happy and funny and social.    So she dicked around and today I finally got my xanax refilled.   But on Friday she gave me Trileptol for the bi-polar and was weaning me off of the zoloft down to 25mg for a week and then off of it. This last Sunday I got depressed. and then Yesterday was hell I couldn’t even get dressed/showered until 5:30pm.   Luckily this happened when I don’t have to work.   The xanax/zoloft has made me so much better that I have been able to get a job and now I am enrolled in college classes online.     At 1:30am last night I had another major panic attack and ended up having to call a Doctor on base to try and calm me down.   Today I went and saw Dr. R again and I told her that the zoloft was ok other than the vivid nightmares and no sex drive..   I said I could deal with that as long as I was happy and could function.  She decided she wanted to put me on Paxil.   Which in the past had given me the nightmares/no sex drive..  DUMB *itch.    Then tried to prescribe me prozac which also doesn’t work for me and I’d told her that twice also that it didn’t work that I was fine on the zoloft.    So she decided to put me on Elavil along w/ the Trileptol.   I have a bad astigmatism and was wearing glasses and Elavil causes depth perception problems again DUMB *itch.    But I got my prescription for xanax refilled. She kept going on and on how addictive it was.   Previously I had been told to take it 3 times a day.  Now she had Dr. M (she can’t presribe scheduled drugs/addictive ones.  she’s not really a Doctor just some special glorified psychiatric nurse).    So Dr. M presribed me #60 pills to take ever 4-6 hours or 4-6 pills a day.  Grrrrrrrrrr…    What should I do now?     I am soooooo confused.   I need to be able to function and work and go to school. Without the xanax and zoloft at 25mg yesterday I couldn’t function.    In the past I have taken Trazadone, Remeron, Paxil, Prozac, Celexa,  Effexor and probably more I’ve forgotten all with some major negative side effects. Help!!!!       I am not doubling up the dosage of the xanax nor even taking it as often as the doctor says I can.   Just when I need it but it’s a miracle when I do need it.    So frustrating.   I admitted to doing drugs in the past.   (pot, mushrooms, acid 2times, xtc25 times or so, never any other methanphetamine drugs).     My sobriety from drugs is very important to me and I believe I have never been addicted to any of those drugs.   I worked in a drug rehab for 9 months helping drug addicted girls.   But from going to feeling normal to and happy to being told that I may not be able to have what has made me happy anymore is very frustrating.   I really don’t care if I get addicted.   I just want to be happy and be able to function and work and live.  I’m tired of existing and not living.     Please help give me some direction on where I should go from here?   Can I report this ladies erratic behavior?    She tried to prescribe me wellbutrin 3 times when that pill puts me in hell. Also my personal counselor told me she talked to PA-M to originally prescribed me the xanax/zoloft and he told her that he was surprised the xanax lasted me as long as it had and he didn’t think that I was a high risk for addiction. Thanks, Jaimie P.S.  Sorry this is so long.  I needed to vent.

Hi Jaimie & welcome to ASAP! This is typically one of those stories… paved with incompetent mental health practitioners. If Zoloft and Xanax *as needed* works so well for you you’d better stick with it. It’s common and often very effective to combine an SSRI with a benzo. There is no reason why anybody would want to prescribe Paxil or Prozac instead of Zoloft when that is the med that works, it’s plainly ridiculous. Wellbutrin is the most stimulating of antidepressants and as an only med is contra-indicated for anxiety/panic sufferers, in the vast majority of cases it will only exacerbate anxiety as you noticed. BTW you don’t have to think you’re dying when having a PA. As a matter of fact when in the middle of a major PA I wish I *would* die, anything to *stop* it… If you would be bipolar they shouldn’t have prescribed an SSRI for you but lithium or some such. From the scarce information you give it doesn’t sound like you’re bipolar to me and the fact that Zoloft/Xanax helps that makes it even more unlikely. So find another doc or have them prescribe you Zoloft/Xanax as a regular combo. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

If this is what works for you, then why not go back to this person.  A good psychiatrist would be best to go to in the long term, one who understands that this is a good med for you.  I take Zoloft, and find it to be a good med.  My psychiatrist also gives me Ativan when it is needed, but I have not needed to take it for quite a while.  The Zoloft is handling things pretty well. Take care, Liz

HI Jaimie, welcome to ASAP, yep that was a long post, but hope you feel better having vented. No wonder you are confused, you sure have been on a roller coaster with meds and docs. So after all this do you have a proper diagnosis? It appears from what you say that the zoloft/xanax combo works best for you. I understand your docs concerns re addiction given your past but from what you say you are in control. Just wanted to tell you that with the Klonopin/clonazepam it usually does cause drowsiness to begin with but for most people this subsides within a few weeks. It doesn’t give the immediate relief that xanax does but as a longer acting benzo it has major benefits – not suggesting you should go back to it, just giving you my experience with this med. So where to from here? Are any of these docs you’ve seen specialist in anxiety, if not it would be great if you were to get a proper diagnosis. From here you could get back to the meds which have helped in the past and perhaps you might like to consider some therapy to develop coping strategies for the panic attacks. Wishing you all the best for the wedding. Even a happy event can add stress to our lives. Vanessa :) )

Hi Jaimie, Welcome to ASAP! It sounds like you’ve been threw the ringer so far. It sounds like you have yet to receive a proper diagnosis and therapuetic routine to work with. I knwo this is frustrating for you but I would try to be as paitent as possible and see this all through. If you receive a firm diagnosis, such as bipolar, they therapy will be different than if you were to suffer from Anxiety/Panic attacks. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is the best therapy for A&P. Work with your Doctors. You clearly don’t have confidence in the one who is unorganized and scattered. Are you confined to using Military Doctors? Would you be able to use civilians and have CHAMPUS reimburse? Military life is difficult to adjust to. How long have you been married?  From your note it sounds like you are going through major life adjustments at the moment. Is your spouse with you? I imagine with the likelyhood of us having a war with Iraq you must be concerned about your husbands life. Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress. Hang tough!

Response:

Hey Jaimie! I don’t post here a lot but I do certainly understand and empathize with your predicament .   Just get your meds sorted out and start feeling  human when  the rug gets yanked out from under you AGAIN!!  IT BITES ~ From your comments it would seem that  the PA-M has it the most together, overmedicated state by many of your fellow sufferers opinions or needs. Since you’ve switched  SSRI’s in the past,  I’m guessing going to 50 mg of Zoloft was not a rough start, but you  have a lot happening and the Xanax has helped you smooth over the potholes.   Any change in meds can be uncomfortable. the comment that PA-M was surprised the initial xanax RX lasted you as long as it did  is heartening.  also heartening that your personal counselor  has been in touch with PA-M and they are willling to work together.   thats a wonderful combination.  I don’t knock PA’s either in  Military  or civilian attire, sometimes they have more time to LISTEN. We talk a lot about doctor shopping here, but it seems like/looks like you’ve shopped  and maybe found your own best solution…..  if the Zoloft /Xanax combo works for you, why mess with it? We all want to be well, feel well and  we all search for the Right Stuff. If you are as lucky as I have been you will need the Xanax less and less as the "right" SSRI does what its supposed to do. You CAN chose your  health providers, you MUST chose your health providers, and you are in no way obligated to suck up to anyone who isn’t helping you. That applies to those who may be confusing the issues For your own empowerment, stick with the providers who help you.  Alphabet soup means nothing, results count. Hugs to you. Sue in Maine

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, I’m 23 y/o female who has has depression/anxiety all my life…   And I get panic attacks/anxiety attacks…  I don’t get the I’m going to die feeling though so the doc says it’s not true panic attack just anxiety. She kept tryin g to prescribe medicine for me that I told her had caused me problems in the past. I need to be able to function and work and go to school. sleeplessness and Effexor

Question:

spewed forth: Hello. Into my 3rd week with Effexor still lots of side-effects and not much relief. I know my depression is a main reason for my terrible sleeping pattern but Effexor seems to make it worse. Is there any over-the-counter drug that would be good for helping me sleep longer and deeper? TIA.

You might want to try Benadryl.  Yes, it’s an anti-histamine.  But it can make you very drowsy.  And by far it’s the only ’sleep aid’ that you might be able to take on any kind of depression medication. Anything else you might take could possibly increase the effects of the anti-depressants you’re on – and in a very bad way.

Yeah, ambien is some good stuff. You might try asking your doc about it.

Response:

If you take the effexor at night, try switching the dose to morning or afternoon.  If you take it in the morning, try taking it at night to see if it makes you drowsy.  All antidepressants can cause either drowsiness or insomnia in different people, and rather than taking sleeping medication, you might want to try changing when you take the effexor first. Good luck Kylie.

Thanks all. I appreciate it. See my pdoc Wednesday and my GP Friday so between the two pill dispensers I should be able to come up with something. Trouble is they might not want to prescribe something too strong as I tried swallowing bucket loads of Endocet and valium only a month or so ago. Maybe  I should take up a "wee hours of the morning" hobby. Maybe painting landscapes on the head of a pin ;)

Benadryl isn’t supposed to be taken at the same time. It will effectively make your Effexor dose more potent and longer lasting. Talk to your doctor and make sure they look up drug interactions.

Effexor Withdrawal Causing Crackling Sounds in the Brain

Question:

Effexor Withdrawal Causing Crackling Sounds in the Brain Antidepressants  "Thank God for this website." I had a nervous breakdown six years ago and after being on other

anti-depressants without a problem, my psychiatrist felt that Effexor had less of an effect on the heart, and so switched me to Effexor. I have tried unsuccessfully to quit on many

occasions, even though I only take 37.5 mgs per day. The extreme lethargy I feel when I have tried to quit, the tingling in various parts of my body, the weird dreams and most

troublesome of all, the crackling, electric sounds in my head have caused me too much distress to ever be successful.

Hi, I think that you have to think about all these  side effect problems. Maybe they are not side-effect, maybe they are only telling you that you are stressed, and you need to fix your problems, otherwise the side-problems will be forever with you B

I thought cross-posting to and from different kind of newsgroups was not the reason why they started alt.support.schizofrenia. Btw, is it not forbidden in the FAQ ? Berty

No hospital after all!

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – x-no-archive: yes the pdoc decided not to hospitalize me, as the suicidal impulses have passed for now. instead, she increased my zoloft dose again, renewed my klonny prescription and added trazodone for sleep. hopefully this will help me get eight *consecutive* hours of sleep a night. and i have to go back and see her next week. she also got me set up with a counselor who specializes in self-esteem issues, and my first appointment is February 23rd. if the trazodone doesn’t work, she’ll refer me to the sleep disorder clinic, and i will be spending a few nights there in order for them to find out why i wake up after three hours. thanks, everyone who wished me well. i appreciate it more than i can say. SK SK, I’m on the exact same meds. Took up to three dosage increases to find the right combination for me. 200mg of Zoloft in the morning, along with .05 Klonny; another Klonny around 11:00AM, and a third one around 4:30.  Then, 100mg of Trazadone about an hour before I’m ready to go to sleep. Getting a full night’s sleep was never a problem after my original Traz dose of 50mg was increased to 100mg. Frank i could use a full night’s sleep myself.  what is the klonny like? diana

Diana, Well, the Trazadone is for sleep.  The Klonny is an anti-anxiety med. I find it takes the edge off things, if that makes any sense. I like it, myself. Doesn’t make me tired, or any other side effects; it helps make things tolerable that might otherwise get me frazzled. Frank

Response:

just a quick note on the sleepins meds trazadone always left me doped up the next day i’m on Sonata now, can be taken when you wake up in the middle of the night…just need 4 hrs to be able sleep afterwards i do know meds are very indivual, just thought i’d bring it up

Zoloft side effects!

Question:

Jim wrote Rob, I’ve taken Zoloft, too. (200 mg: 100 mg 2xday). I have been diagnosed with Depression and Panic Disorder for 11 years now. I have tried every med combo possible and have just tried a new combo. My Xanax has been increased to 4mg per day. In addition I have been given 150 mg of Zoloft per day. After 6 weeks I have had the most marked improvement ever. However the Zoloft seems to give me naseua and loss of appetite. Is this a common side effect and will it ever go away? Anyone ever using Zoloft, Pleas

Rob, I didn’t experience nausea or a lack of appetite. Perhaps I was doing something differently than you.  How are you taking it? (divided dose, twice a day)? Taking any med on a full stomach usually helps with the nausea. I’ve also taken Zanax, briefly, as it didn’t agree with me very well. E-mail me if you want. Best regards, Jim

Response:

Dear Jim, I am interested to know what the side effects were from taking Xanax.  I have been taking inc. amounts of it as per MDs directions and it doesn’t agree with me, either. What did you take in its place, if anything.  Thanks for your help – either e-mail me or post to group your feedback.

Response:

Hey Rob, All I can tell you is that I’ve been diagnosed with manic depression for five years and Zoloft is the only medication that has not in any way caused any side effects. Good luck. .. Yours, Joe Pirrello – Toronto

I started taking Zoloft about 6 months ago and had the same problem. Try taking the Zoloft after meals & the nausea should subside.
