the Olds Achieva
Oh, they are not all that attractive, but I would not say they were the UGLIEST thing GM ever came up with. With all due respect to the folks who like ‘em I had an Achieva on rental for a couple of days about 3 years ago. A real nothingburger of a car. But no, I don’t think it was that ugly…
Response:
No question, it’s the Aztec. A GM screw-up of global thermo-nuclear proportions. I just hope that among those 2000+ GM executives who are being forced by the General to drive the things around Detroit are numbered the idiot-laden committees that approved the thing for production. I find myself wondering: how long a run is GM gonna make of those before closing up production? You mentioned the Edsel Ranger. Well, the Edsel got a lot of mocking in the press by various columnists, TV personalities, and all that. I have heard no such similar mocking of the Aztek. Does anyone have any sales figures on that beast?

You have to wonder, especially with vehicle sales going in the crapper as of recent.. As strange as they are, however, I’ve seen more then a few driving around here locally, so apparently _someone_ is buying them.. Personally, I like the front end, could live with the side view, but the rear-end is just too bizzare for even me, and I’m pretty forgiving when it comes to "Different" vehicles.. Take the new Impala, for instance.. When it first came out everybody screamed bloody murder about the rear taillights.. I never "Hated" them, persay, but they did have to grow on me, and now I envy the car quite alot, and the fact that the plant here in Oshawa can’t make them quickly enough speaks volumes towards the fact that they are selling like hotcakes…. Now, if only I could afford one..

When I was a youngster, they had these big compacting trash trucks running around in Los Angeles. They were White trucks, and the compactor unit was Leach. When I first saw an Aztek from the back, it brought back the picture in my mind of those trucks.

Hmmm, this is true. I’m 24 years old and a die-hard Oldsmobile fan. But, as an Economics major, I have to agree it was a good idea to kill Oldsmobile as a division. I’ve watched the auto industry for several years now. I’ve noticed that Buick seems to be trying to change it’s stodgy-traditional image of being a "old person’s" car. Here you have the latest array of concept cars and the new Rendezvous "SUV" aka minivan with a defined front end. If Buick is not able to change it’s image, I can only see it taking the highway to auto heaven with Oldsmobile in a few years. I mean GM is obviously moving towards two main divisions, Chevrolet-Chevrolet Trucks and Pontiac-GMC. Cadillac and Saturn both have their niche in the marketplace that is well defined. Unfortunately, GM has been very slow at meeting customers’ demands and the import competition. So, it only makes sense that traditional brands such as Oldsmobile and Buick be euthanized. Now, I mentioned that I am an Oldsmobile fan. So, IMHO, it will be missed. I thought the Olds cars were heading in the right direction design-wise. Now that Olds is dead, I really have to question my loyalty to GM. I mean, what kind of management do you have when you take one of the top selling American nameplates to demise in less than two decades. Then again, there is GM’s SUV obsession. Most people would agree that due to rising insurance rates and gas prices as unstable as a southern California faultline, the SUV craze has seen it’s zenith. Unless GM can find a way to dump the tortoise attitude at meeting the customers’ demands, it’s market share will only continue to dwindle. Anyway, I will get off my soap box now. I just had to vent. Take care and God bless, Jeremy
Response:
Why not just keep Cadillacs, Chevrolet, Park Avenues, Grand Ams and Prix’s. Everything else is duplication or doesn’t sell. Have different handling/tire packages available on Chevrolets to please people who want handling or floating. Market share is going to go down to maybe 25%, they couldn’t even figure out how to market their best driving car line. Current new Olds owners for their next car probably won’t go for boyracer Pontiacs or floating Buicks, but they may use their $1500 vouchers for Chevys if they need to save the cash instead of getting that Maxima, Jetta, or Accord they really want to get.

Response:
I agree, I think you will see automobile manufacturers start to streamline their lineups. I mean, what is the use in making the same vehicle with minor cosmetic changes and selling it under 5 different names (import and domestic names I might add). It just doesn’t make good financial sense to do that. With so many automobile manufacturers getting in bed together (Ford, Mazda, Nissan) (GM, Honda, Isuzu, Toyota) (Chrystler, Mitsubishi), brands have really become a thing of the past. We kinda have generic vehicles now that are some sort of bastardization of several different manufacturers. I think you would be hard pressed to find a car true to it’s name anymore. I have a Nissan Pickup. It was built in a Ford plant with parts supplied by Nissan that were made in Tennessee. Eventually, I think you may see GM be reduced to Chevrolet, Cadillac, and maybe Pontiac. They could go after the Buick/ Olds market with some lower line Cadillac’s. It seems as if they are putting all of the performance vehicles under the Pontiac flag, and Chevy is going after the daily driver/ economical vehicles. Chrystler is killing Plymouth. I expect that it is only a matter of time before Ford kills Mercury. Certainly this trend will continue over the next 10 years. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Debatable.. I first time I saw one (aside from a dealer lot-many in stock) was on a return trip from the airport after dropping my brother off for an early morning return flight the day after Christmas. It was still dark and I wondered what the ugly vehicle was ahead of me. Up to this point my focus on the Astek being ugly was the front end. Well the rear end deserves its portion of criticism also. This is the only time I have seen an Astek on the road. Hopefully the Buick version will look better. BTW, I do like some other designs most others dislike. I liked the 96-99 Taurus and the new Maxima and even like its rear end styling. Dave – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Aztek hands down?

You do not make it very clear; but I presume you are wanting to ‘load up’ while in Mexico, to save money. I live near LA and many people drive to Tijuana for that purpose. In general there is no problem with the quality of the medicine . . . but one never knows. 99% of drugs (not sure about narcotics or pain medicines containing narcotics, such as more than over-the-counter amounts of codeine, etc.) need no Rx. Remember that most medications have generic equivalents or the generics are so close to what you are taking, it isn’t worth taking the chance. I wouldn’t, and don’t, do it. I do it all the time. According to my Doctor who worked for a pharmaceutical company before she went to med school… many of the medicines manufactured in other countries are done under license from US companies. You can also buy name brand meds at a much lower price. In any case, I buy meds in Mexico with her blessing. My favorite place to buy meds is on Cozumel at http://gocozumel.com/pharmacy/ Many prescription meds are available in Mexico without a prescription… same exact medicines… at a much lower price. There are also generic versions of medicines that are available in Mexico that are not available in the US. Sometimes the prices on generic meds in Mexico are incredibly low compared to US prices. I don’t find myself agreeing with George very often, but this time he got it right. Drugs in Mexico are easily available, cheaper than in the USA and are the SAME EXACT drug (almost always from the SAME US based drug company). For the original poster, even if you don’t have a prescription for a drug you want, ask the Mexican pharmacist for a doctor. He’s call a local physician who will either come to the store or send someone to pick you up. For $20, he’ll give you a physical (generally, the ability to fish out the $20 bill) and will write you a LEGAL prescription from whichever drugs you want. Many class II drugs no longer available (or highly restricted) in the US can be had in Mexico. Many drugs that are prescription in the US are OTC in Mexico. The major difference is how you’ll get them. Where pills in the US come in a small bottle filled by a US pharmacist from a 500 or 1000 pill jar, in Mexico (and most other countries other than the US), they are shrink wrapped on a piece of cardboard or in a sealed container, generally in smaller quantities (20 pills per box v 60 from the local US pharmacist), but the cost will almost always be 1/2 or less for equal doses and amounts. Do some research before you leave, know what drugs you want (and what they cost here) and if you have US prescriptions, bring them along. Know if there is a generic equivalent and what its name is (all the Mexican pharmacias have the physicians desk reference guide available). Know the dosage you require. One last thing. Many Mexican pharmacias take credit cards (that allows you a decent exchange rate) but some (usually the smaller ones) only take cash. Know the exchange rate or have pesos handy. BTW, the major reason why drugs are cheaper outside the US is simple. Scum sucking LAWYERS and lawsuits. When was the last time you read of a multi million dollar lawsuit against a pharmaceutical company in Mexico? Chuck for a great deal on your next cruise, check out: www.cruisequick.com

Absolutely correct. As somebody mentioned, you can get a Mexican MD to write you a prescription and not risk having the drugs seized. Hi Cathy, If is not a problem to buy medication in port, but realize the US Customs has an interesting perspective on this. If you are in possession of medication requiring a prescription but lack the prescription, they may react negatively. Their negativity can intensify if the quantities are substantial or the product is not declared. The ships themselves rarely react to such purchases because it is a common occurrence, but cooperate with government authorities.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m all up for saving money. But on medicine in a third world country? George in PA

Is It Safe to Fly with a Sinus Infection?
Question:
It is nice to know that I’m not alone in my sinus suffering. I have a chronic infection and am wondering if it is safe to fly with sinusitis. My son and I are due to fly from London to NY in four weeks and we both have infections now. Does anyone out there know the answer to this? Thanks, MS
Response:
Last year I made 4 trips coast to coast with the sinus infection. I did not have any problems. My guess would be that it will be individuals degree of infection. I know that when I landed in Las Vegas on my way back I sat down on a bench in front of the airport and my sinuses started to drain. I did not have any problems all the time I was there. But afte I arrived back in Pennsylvania I started with the sinuses again.
Response:
Be very careful. Because of the changes in air pressure, it can cause some problems. I have flown with sinus infection. When I took the precaution of taking a decongestant at least 1/2 hour before I flew, I was okay. Once I forgot and experienced extreme pain in my ears on landing. If you have any sensation of blocked ears because of the sinusitus, be especially careful. True, but if I didn’t fly every time I have a sinus infection I would be unemployed. I have no doubt that the time I spend in the air made my infections worse and contributed to them becoming chronic. I never had any real discomfort from it though – the pressure didn’t hurt or anything like that. These days, I fly regardless but fortunately, I have enough control over the infections that I don’t get them often nor are they severe. Loki

Several things. 1. Irrigation – daily – I just got the Grossan (sp?) tip to try it out 2. I also have asthma and the Singulaire I take for that helps the sinuses as well 3. Pau ‘D Arco – I take it daily. It’s a herb that I drink as a tea and it keeps the infections to almost none at all. I take it in higher doses if I do get an infection and it cures it faster than antibiotics. 4. Guaifenesin – taken daily to keep the mucus thined out and flowing 5. Two sinus surgeries a few years back – one to correct a deviated septum and the other to trim the turbinates. All of this (well, maybe not the herb) things discussed regularly here. I am very interested in the Singulaire. When this was announced on the UK news not long ago the asthma helplines were jammed wth people ringing up for information. I was seeing my ENT at the time and asked him if this would be suitable ( Leucotreine antagonist). He had’nt heard the news but he was very interested. Is Singulaire used in the USA on a regular basis? At the present time I use Rhinolast(astelin) to prevent inflammation as I have not found the steroid nasal sprays very effective because of severe allergies. I would be grateful if you could let me know what product you buy that contains the Guaifenesin . Thanks Heather

Yes, Singulaire is used regularly here but for asthma, not for sinusitis though I find it does help with that as well. There is some controversy over the Singulaire as to whether it causes Churg-Strauss syndrome but that is something that only asthmatics get anyway. I like the Singulaire because it works better for my asthma than the other anti-leucotreine’s did. Accolate is another of them that did also help my sinusitis though it must be taken twice a day and Singulaire is only once a day. I never found the streoid nasal sprays helped at all. I have a prescription for the Guaifenesin. It is for 1200mg twice a day. I actually only take 300 mg twice a day. They are 600mg tablets and I cut them in half. My sinuses would like the whole 1200 but my asthma does not – it causes problems. Here in the US you can buy Guaifenesin under the name Robitussin. They have several products and only one of them is the Guaifenesin without other things added. I don’t know if you have Robitussin in the UK or not but here it is over the counter. Loki

Yep, if you’re using the loose herb be sure to *boil* it for 20 minutes. Don’t let it sit longer than that without straining it or it will taste bitter. I take 3 cups a day for an active infection and keep it up for about a week though symptoms clear in around 3 days. Loki

Please tell us more about this Pau d’Arco. I’ve found that many people credit an herb with benefits that are actually due to another change made at the same time; if, however, the herb really does have an effect as a drug in itself, it could be quite valuable, so it bears looking into. Did you make any other changes at the same time as you began using the Pau D’arco? Did you have continuing problems after starting the guaifenesin, Singulair, and irrigation, for a significant period of time, that were then apparently cleared up by starting the Pau d’Arco? Many people find that they do not need antibiotics to clear up sinus infections, if they use guaifenesin and irrigation and have had anatomical problems resolved via surgery. Have you tried doing everything else right, and not using Pau d’Arco? How many infections per given period of time do you get while doing everything else right, but not using Pau D’arco, as compared to doing all of the above plus the Pau D’arco?
I was doing everything else first and then added the Pau ‘D Arco. My last surgery was 6 years ago. I’ve been irrigating since then as well as using the guaifenesin. I didn’t start the Singulaire till after the Pau ‘D Arco, but I had used Accolate for about a year before I found the herb. The Singulaire just replaced the Accolate and gave no added improvement. The Singulaire was started 6 months after I found the herb. Before the herb, I was still having about 3 or 4 sinus infections a year, which was much, much better than the constant one I had for 9 months prior to surgery. I did see some improvement with each change I made but the best I got it to was the 3 or 4 a year. I started the Pau ‘D Arco during an infection that I couldn’t get rid of with normal antibiotics. The sinus infection had wreaked havoc with my asthma as well. I was on prednisone for that to the point that my adrenals started to give me grief. I had gone through 3 courses of antibiotics and was irrigating and still couldn’t get rid of it. A friend told me about the Pau ‘D Arco and I tried it. I’m an herbalist but this one was new to me. I used 3 cups a day and after 3 days was feeling fine and had few symptoms. I kept using it for 10 days and the infection cleared. Now, I take it daily but only one cup a day. I don’t get sinus infections on their own at all and it’s been a year. I did pick up a cold though and got the beginnings of an infection which went away when I upped the herb to 3 cups a day. That only happened once though. Loki

fresh? WARNING – SOAPBOX AHEAD! Many herbs should not be taken in capsule form. It is highly profitable for the herbal industry to sell them that way but it is most often not the most effective way to take an herb. Each herb is different and must be prepared differently. Pau ‘D Arco’s active properties cannot be extracted by the human body in usable form but for some reason if you either boil it (prepare a decoction) or use a cold extract (tincture or liquid extract) you get what you need. Also, freshness is paramount and I find that frequently the herbs are just too old. I have found one shop in St. Louis where I live that I can trust to supply quality, fresh herbs. Many others sell herbs that are just plain old. I almost never buy capsules but buy the herb in bulk and prepare teas or sometimes tinctures from that. Also, with capsules you just don’t know how much of there herb you are getting. If you use the same supplier I find that over time their herbs are generally of consistent quality and strength. Now, the biggest gripe I have with the whole herbal industry is the "herb of the month" syndrome. Every so often an herb becomes fashionable and it’s everywhere and every clerk in every health food store is pushing it. Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. Each herb has it’s specific uses and while several may work on a given complaint, one will generally be better for it than others though there are exceptions. The currently popular herb, Kava Kava is an excellent example. It is being pushed as a tranquilizer but that is not it’s main action. It is used in it’s native land as a hospitality drink and it works the same way there that liquor works here. It lowers inhibitions and does produce a very nice feeling. For an herb to sooth frazzled nerves, skullcap is much more effective. If folks want to use herbs I’m all for that but I do want them to do their research and not just get what is fashionable or what one book said. If you can find a qualified herbalist, I urge you to consult them. If not, at least read up on it in several different sources. The last reason many herbal remedies don’t work is that the doseage is too low. The books I have all say to use 1 teaspoon per cup and I use 1 tablespoon per cup. The books are written to avoid lawsuits from ill informed people so they always understate the dose to avoid problems. Trouble is it is frequently too low to be effective. Of course, if you have an effective dose, you have to think about interactions and contraindications and that isn’t sexy and doesn’t sell books or herbs. Loki

Yep, if you can’t brew it, this is a good option. Be sure to take it every day and to clear an active infection, take it 3 times a day. I haven’t found any interactions or contraindications with this particular herb. It’s very, very safe. It also tastes good as a tea – kinda a vanilla flavor. Loki

Foradil is a new long lasting beta2 agonist bronchodilator drug; somewhat similar to Serevent. However you should also be prescribed a preventor drug, usually a steroid inhaler, like the Pulmicort Turbuhaler [my favorite] or Flovent]. These drugs treat the underlying bronchial inflammation. Hi, I desperately need a link or info on side effects on this product. I have taken Foradil for a little over a month and it has worked wonders almost right away, but I ended up getting a lot of the side effects, the worst and most annoying being really bad twitches in my legs, up to every few minutes when I was on the twice a day inhalation. My doctor cut me back to 1 inhalation a day which has lessened the effects but not gotten rid of them completely and I am still faced with heart palpitations. This is not listed as a side effect but I am noticing increasingly bad foot cramps in the leg that is more twitchy and I get them at night, coincidentally I take my one dose at night. I talked to a pharmacist who doesn’t carry it, but he said it is uncommon to get muscle cramps from long acting bronchildialtors, any info would be greatly appreciated. P.S. I have reacted with foot and leg cramps from other asthma meds and it all started again shortly after starting this one. Otherwise I never experience them.

Here’s a link: http://www.virtualdrugstore.com/asthma/formoterol.html Formoterol (Foradil, United States and Canada) Excerpt: "Side Effects Formoterol or Foradil can affect the cardiovascular system, especially in high doses." You could try another long-acting bronchodilator; Serevent inhaler or theophylline SR (TheoDur). You could also try increasing steroid inhaler or adding Accolate/Singulair, and not using a long-acting bronchodilator. Foradil is not available in the US, and Canadian law restricts drug information to patients, so its hard to find detailed info. Foradil is also used in the UK and many other countries. Here’s a link on Serevent, a similar drug: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/salmet.htm salmeterol (Serevent) Excerpt: "Adverse Reactions: Adverse reactions to salmeterol are similar in nature to reactions to other selective beta2-adrenoceptor agonists, i.e., tachycardia; palpitations; immediate hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria, angioedema, rash, bronchospasm (see WARNINGS; headache; tremor; nervousness; and paradoxical bronchospasm (see WARNINGS)." singulair working (I think)
Question:
I took it for about 6 weeks and all I got were headaches. My doctor just prescribed Singulair for my asthama. I was looking forward to taking it to see if it would help, until I read the information sheet from the pharmacy. There are alot of potenital side effects, and it kind of spooked me. Anyone else have any side effects, besides nightmares and headaches? Thanks!
The ONLY side effect I had from taking Singulair, was being a little more emotional than normal. I have always been a sensitive person, but I would cry at a commercial if it was sentimental at all. Silly, isn’t it? Well, once I got on Zoloft (part of my migraine prevention routine), my emotional state has returned to normal. Just my 2 cents..Good Luck, I hope Singulair works well for you! *hugs* Ash
Response:
I asked my doctor about taking the Singulair in the morning and he thought it would be ok. He asked the rep. and they didn’t know why it was to be a night time dose. I can tell that it is working because I only need my rescue inhaler a few times a week instead of every day. I do not like the weird dreams so I will cont. to take in the morning until I receive a "good" reason why I should take in the night. Pam.

Response:
From the Singular web page: Like all prescription drugs, SINGULAIR may cause side effects. In studies, side effects usually have been mild. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking SINGULAIR. The list below is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with SINGULAIR. Your doctor can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects. The side effects in patients treated with SINGULAIR were similar in type and frequency to side effects in patients who were given a placebo (a pill containing no medication). Some of the side effects reported in studies included: tiredness fever abdominal (stomach) pain stomach or intestinal upset (gastroenteritis) heartburn dizziness headache rash Additionally, the following have been reported: allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing, hives, and itching; dream abnormalities, drowsiness, irritability, and restlessness. A condition, which includes a combination of certain persistent or worsening symptoms, has been reported rarely in patients given SINGULAIR. These symptoms may include: a flu-like illness, rash, pins and needles or numbness of arms or legs, and severe sinusitis. These have occurred usually, but not always, in patients whose oral corticosteroid medicine for asthma is being reduced. Although SINGULAIR has not been shown to cause this condition, you must tell your doctor immediately if you experience a combination of these symptoms. Remember, anytime you have a medical problem you think may be related to SINGULAIR, talk to your doctor. Tim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Then that’s what it is! I just started having bizarre dreams — sometimes nightmares — about a month ago. And it did start about a week or so after I started the Singulair. The Singulair is definitely helping me. I don’t feel like I have a bad chest cold all of the time anymore (yeah!). And I’ve been waking up at least twice every night for about 3 years now, so I guess I can live with the nightmares. I’ll ask my doctor about it the next time I see him. Thanx! Regarding nightmares: I think I read in a magazine ad (the part on the back of the ad that contains all the technical information about a drug) that Singulair can cause vivid dreams. You may want to discuss this rare side-effect with your doctor. I regularly have vivid dreams, I did both before and after going on Singulair last spring, but I have noticed an increase in the frequency of these dreams, rarely bad, since starting the med. Because I am used to the dreams anyway, they don’t bother me. Anyone else notice this when they started Singulair?

Singulair is considered to ba a very safe medication. The trick when looking for side effects is to compare the medication side effects with the placebo side effects. The difference in the rates of the side effects suggest the likelihood of an actual side effect of the medication. No electrons were harmed in the posting of this message.

My doc switched me from Singulair to Accolate because I experienced numbness in my extremities and lips (of all places!) plus I was really disoriented when taking it. Sort of spaced out feeling. Thank you Anne, Jackie, Diane, and Elise — and the others who have given me such kind support. I’m still struggling, but I’m doing the best I can. My brother is coming by today on his way to a gig – he’s going to help me gather up all the trash bags and get them to the dumpster. That he’s doing it for Mom rather than for me is expected. That doesn’t matter a lot to me — just a little — but any assistance at all is a gift. I wish I the equivalent of 7 dwarves who could come into my house and whistle while they work, doing all the things I am currently incapable of doing. (Yuck. I hate Disney imagery.) Anyway, thank you all again. I’m still around, just very wobbly both physically and emotionally. Medications help somewhat. I am finding it difficult to meditate: sometimes my brain is racing too fast and furiously, sometimes I just sit and cry. There are three things that keep me going: 1. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I may have missed something but I am wondering where Deirdre is. I miss her here. Anyone know? Philip Hi Philip, and everyone, It’s nice to be missed — sorry if I worried anyone. I just haven’t been motivated to post anything. Mostly I feel I have nothing to contribute about anxiety and panic. The good news is: since I’ve been meditating regularly I haven’t had any anxiety at all. The weird news is: since I’ve been meditating regularly I have been lethargic and uninterested in most things. I can’t quite shake the (irrational?) thought that maybe I need a little anxiety to keep me moving. So, make of that what you will. It feels like depression without sadness. Is that possible? My pdoc du jour is not a lot of help. He’s nice and earnest and looks to be about 14 years old. Lots of reference books and very little real experience. That’s what we po’ folks get. I’m currently taking 60 mg fluoxetine (Prozac) and 150 mg venlafaxine (Effexor) daily. I have clonazepam (Klonopin) on hand but haven’t needed it in quite a while. Same with the trazodone for insomnia. Since pdoc added the Effexor, the only apparent change is an increase in exhaustingly bizarre dreams. I’ve always had wild dreams, but these are way off the charts. I wake up shaking my head in amazement. OTOH, maybe meditation is stripping away layers of the mental onion, so to speak, and I’m getting down to the deeper levels of me. Whatever the case, there’s another unshakable (irrational?) thought: I am just really good at masking total madness. Raging psychosis under the quiet exterior. Once again, pdoc du jour is too green to understand me. I’ll be getting the next pdoc (a new one every summer) in a month or two. We’ll see what the psych professors have dreamed up during the past 12 months. Other than mental health issues, I’m fairly healthy. Meditation has significantly lowered and stabilized my blood pressure. Mom is doing fine, in that there have been no crises. She’s weaker and slower — the daily changes are imperceptible, but over a few months I can tell she’s slowing down. My brother is fine, my nephew is grand. My cat is occasionally snuggly. I guess that’s my report for now. I’ll try to post more often, but I can’t promise anything. Peace to all, Deirdre — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

see my post "my meditation practice" also — Basically two types of meditation practice that enhance each other. These increase concentration and insight: –mindfulness of the breath –mindfulness of the body –mindfulness of feelings –mindfulness of thoughts And metta meditation, also called lovingkindness meditation. I usually begin each sitting with standard relaxation exercises. In terms of psychiatric benefits, I’m starting to realize that the mindfulness meditations are more suited to combatting anxiety and panic, and the metta meditation is most beneficial against depression. Looks like I need to do more metta:-) You don’t need anxiety in the pathological sense, no one does. But maybe you need other kinds of stimuli?
I download movies a lot. But that’s just really high-tech escapism. I have heaps of books but my attention span isn’t what it used to be. I honestly don’t know. He who might be the boyfriend is an enigma. He remains in poor health 3000 miles away. I don’t know if we consist of deeper and more superficial levels. I also doubt that dreams mean anything except what we interpret them to mean (which can be good material, not only for psychodynamic therapy nut for cognitive therapy as well). Did your child pdoc give a reason for prescribing Effexor together with 60 mg of Prozac or is he just trying the next cvombo he can think of? Whatever the case, there’s another unshakable (irrational?) thought: I am just really good at masking total madness. Raging psychosis under the quiet exterior.
That thought indeed sounds quite irrational to me. I don’t subscribe to this concept of the onion either. I do think we can have many different and contradictory thoughts and feelings (when we are awake and when we are dreaming) but I don’t think we’re like vulcanos (which is somewhat like you describe yourself: psychosis raging under the quiet exterior). I think you may sometimes have psychotic episodes and when they’re over they’re over and not somewhere "down there" waiting for th next chance to erupt. I don’t think that way about panic atacks either and I wonder if you do… Once again, pdoc du jour is too green to understand me. I’ll be getting the next pdoc (a new one every summer) in a month or two. We’ll see what the psych professors have dreamed up during the past 12 months.
Keep us posted please, maybe this one will be a drooling octogenarian? Other than mental health issues, I’m fairly healthy. Meditation has significantly lowered and stabilized my blood pressure.
I want to learn it too! Mom is doing fine, in that there have been no crises. She’s weaker and slower — the daily changes are imperceptible, but over a few months I can tell she’s slowing down. My brother is fine, my nephew is grand. My cat is occasionally snuggly.

Hi, I have been on zoloft for about a year now. It has absolutely erased my anxiety. I am on 25 mgs a day, which I know is low, but it seems to work for me. I have not slept well in months now, which I know is a side effect. At the same time, I am scared to try and come off this. The zoloft has zapped my depression and anxiety, yet who can go without good sleep? I know I have to call my doc, but I wanted to start with you guys first. chaz — The charter is available at:

Anyone know what would cause depression after ejaculation?
Question:
Modern SSRI antidepressants are good at preventing both depression and ejaculation…..
It’s a well known but little discussed side effect of drugs like prozac, zoloft, effexor, citalopram….. Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I’ve had since I was a teenager. Everytime I ejaculate, I get a feeling of depression x approximately 2-3 days. It has nothing to do with anything psychologically but I feel is biochemical. Does anyone know of a solution or can direct me to a solution for this problem? Thanks R

It is possible to abuse sex. It can be very effective as a means of reducing anxiety. It is an addiction much as drinking exsessive amounts of alcohol. Doubt if it’s biochemical any more then an alcoholic that feels depressed when drinking. Contact a therapist that knows anything about sexual issues. And a lot of them don’t know so don’t settle for the first you find. They might also tell you if there is a possibillity that it is a biochemical reaction. J.

Question:
The, North, &, South, Bipolar, Connection…Meet, me, in, the, middle! You can still get the medical care you need without insurance, and you don’t have to settle for care that doesn’t meet your needs, but you will have to work harder to find it and see that you get it.
God, I hope you’re right. You can use this period while you still have insurance to start making solid plans.
I’m trying. I’ve never been very good at follow-through though :/ The worry is a motivator, but once you start to see how you <will survive it becomes lessor. I know what it is like to have too many questions and not enough answers.
Don’t we all. :/ Thanks for the support.
Response:
I’m sorry I was so hard on you. I did not realize how much you have & are suffering or how frightened you are.
It’s ok, I understand those knee-jerk reactions; do it all the time myself ; I was insensitive myself in my response. Maybe you pushed one of my buttons. You see I have two children, both of whom are now adult & both of whom are healthy.
I’m glad your kids are healthy. I’m not going to have any myself, not only because I don’t want to take the chance of passing this on, but also because I don’t think I could take care of them. I can barely take care of myself. Heck, most of the time I go hungry because shopping is such a horrible experience. If you could get to a major teaching hospital in your area and see someone in the "Mood Disorders Clinic" (Department of Psychiatry), I am confident you would be able to find relief for most of your symptoms.
This is a very small city, there’s only one hospital. I’d have to go to CMH. It is possible that a period of hospitalization would be advisable to allow the pdocs & staff to more quickly find the right combination of meds for *you*.
Um. No. Not only does the mere thought of the hospital scare the crap outa me, but they allow smoking in there (at least in the other place I was in they did) and I am extremely hypersensitive to second hand smoke. Being trapped in there and having to breathe that shit and choking is my worst nightmare. It happened to me the last time and the doctors didn’t care. The other staff didn’t care either. They could have at least kept the exhaust fans on, but the other patients complained that the little bit of wind they generated made them cold. It didn’t even matter that I was choking. From your description of your recent symptoms of tactile and auditory hallucinations, perhaps one of the new "atypical" APs, like Zyprexa, would help. It is also quite useful in combating dysphoric mania, in my experience, which is something you might just be experiencing. Ask your pdoc about it in the context of a comprehensive plan…
I don’t actually have a psychiatrist; just a general practice doctor. I’ve been scared to go to any psychiatrists for at least a decade now … except the interview I just had which was something I had to do, but would rather not discuss. His purpose was just to interview me, he’s not going to be a doctor I will be seeing regularly or who will be prescribing me any medicines. Like I said, I’d have to go to CMH. I might have too much fear to do that, I dunno yet. As for trying other drugs, at this point I’m willing to try just about anything to get this pain out of me.
Response:
I have to agree with Thumper as to the Wellbutrin or any AD. If you are truly bipolar, you pretty well must take a mood stabilizer and this is especially true if you are taking an AD.
I honestly didn’t know this until a couple days ago. I always thought it was the drug causing the problem, but there’s no doubt that I have had very clear-cut episodes of mania that were not drug induced. Those were more in the past, though. The problem the last few years seems to be an ongoing mixed episode that crashes into all out depression every few months. I’m not even experiencing any periods of relative stability; except during the time I was taking dexedrine, but there were (eventually) problems associated with that too. I dunno if there is a drug or combo of drugs out there that will help. Let’s face it, some people just can’t be helped, I’m really starting to believe that I am one of those people. :<

For info, read http://dietchef.ecorp.net/articles/health/water.htm An average sized person who is a total couch potato and not trying to lose weight should drink a minimum of 64 ounces a day. If you are more active and/or trying to lose weight you need to drink a lot more. When you don’t drink a lot of water, you lose weight much more slowly. Weight loss occurs as your liver breaks down fat deposits and flushes them out of your body. But when you don’t drink enough water, your kidneys can not do their job and there fore your liver stops or slows metabolizing fat and helps the kidneys do their job. No matter what, your body will always by default make sure that you remain a live as long as possible. What your kidneys do is essential to survival, so by default the liver will take over some of it’s work. I also just read that adequate hydration during exercise makes you able to breath much more efficiently. In fact, asthmatics who drank water while exercising cut way back on rescue inhaler use. Other than that, I drink *at least* 64 oz. per day, plus extra glasses in little "water rituals" such as the ASD Drinking Game, whenever I’m waiting for food to cook in the microwave, or whenever I’m in class or studying.
