Flu Shot
Question:
writes – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My Pulmonologist has suggested getting the flu shot this year and would welcome any advice for or against. I’m still trying to get stablized with my medication and sure don’t want any complications or even a mild case of the flu right now. The doctor assured me that they inject a dead vaccine and not the live one given years ago….. but am still very leery since vacation is pretty close for me. Would welcome any advice? Thanks! Denice Hi Denice: I was diagnosed with asthma 2 years ago. Last year was the first time I ever got a flu injection. My GP and allergist insisted I get one. Your immune system is already damaged and coming down with the flu could be fatal.
I don’t think my immune system is damaged – I don’t get any more of the general run of coughs & colds than anyone else in the office (possibly less in fact) – but if I *do* get them I will often be iller. Good Luck, Maria

If you can’t get the flu from the shot, then how come I always get sick for two or three days after I get the shot? You CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot. Possible answers: 1A. Coincidence. You would have gotten sick anyway.
One of the funniest things that ever happened to me: About 4 years ago, I was standing in a long line of folks to receive a flu shot. And guess what–the nurse who was doing the shots was herself sneezing and coughing and blowing her nose from a bad cold! The medical office didn’t realize that those of us who were trying to avoid the flu were probably not too interested in catching a bad cold either. :-) Needless to say, I washed my hands and arms thoroughly afterward. But I wonder what happened to the others who weren’t that fastidious. :-) — Steven D. Litvintchouk Disclaimer: As far as I am aware, the opinions expressed herein are not those of my employer.
Response:
Your dr. is correct. The most common side effect of the flu shot is soreness at the injection site (hardly a sign of the flu), although occasionally people feel flu-like joint soreness and fatigue. Get the shot – the flu can literally kill susceptible people, the shot just makes you a bit uncomfortable. – tg (an RN w/ asthma) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My Pulmonologist has suggested getting the flu shot this year and would welcome any advice for or against. The only thing to watch out for (at least with the UK version) is allergy to eggs. They always ask me before putting the needle in. Now that reminds me – it must be time to make that appointment. Real flu (lots of people call a bad cold flu) is a debilitating illness at best, and quite dangerous for the elderly, and those with chronic lung, heart or kidney problems or diabetes. All these groups can get free flu jabs in the UK – apparently the government has about 10,000,000 shots lined up. I was wondering, what are oral steriods? I mean, can someone give me an example? I always get the different types of medications all mixed up. There are so many of them!!! I’m on Flovent, Singulair, and Provental, are any of those oral steroids?
Oral steroids come in pill form. These medications are the ‘big hammer’ used to get the asthma back under control fast during times when your normal medications are not working. (For example, if you get the flu your doctor is probably going to put you on oral steroids.) Flovent is an inhaled steroid. This medication has a huge advantage over oral steroids in that it uses a dosage that is somewhere around 1/30th of that of the oral version. The disadvantage is that this medication works slowly over time. Singulair is a leukotrine receptor antagonist. This medication blocks the receptor sites for a chemical that is crucial to the inflammation process that drives asthma symptoms. Proventil is a beta-agonist. This medication activates the beta receptor sites in the airways causing the muscles to relax and open the airways. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." General Colin Powell
Response:
None of those are oral steroids. Predisone, prednisolone, pediapred, prelone, dexamethasone, decadron are all steroids. Check out my web site at www.ibabydoc.com for a discussion on all asthma meds. Dr. Michael Bornstein, M.D. F.A.A.P. www.ibabydoc.com

If you can’t get the flu from the shot, then how come I always get sick for two or three days after I get the shot?
Because your immune system thinks you have the flu. The idea here is to trick the body so that it produces the appropriate antibodies. (BTW, if the immunization makes you feel bad – think of what the real disease will do to you.) "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." General Colin Powell

looked at the number of viruses out there, the very small number covered by this shot, and the possible reactions to it and opted not to have them. During the last 12 years, I have had a mild flu once. DH & the kids never have.

I have always heard it gives you a ‘touch’ of the virus so your body can build up resistance to it.
Response:
If you can’t get the flu from the shot, then how come I always get sick for two or three days after I get the shot?
Maybe because the flu shot covers only a few small varieties of the flu, and there are many more out there. You may be susesptible to a variety that its not expected many people will be suspectible to and wasn’t incluced in the shot. Or maybe it was a cold, not the flu; there are hundreds of cold viruses. The flu shot is not a panacea for all illness. Its simply a highly probable prevention for a small few.
Response:

You CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot. Possible answers: 1A. Coincidence. You would have gotten sick anyway. 1B. Coincidence. The flu shot alters your immune response and so you get sick with a critter that perhaps you wouldn’t have gotten as sick with. 2. You caught Something Evil from the sick people visting your doctor’s office when you got the flu shot. 3. Your immune system responds to the vaccine with: "wow! dead critters! better wage biochemical warfare *just* to be sure!!"; kind of like how it goes "wow! pollen! time to wage biochemical-thermonuclear war to protect this body from the Evil Invader!!"…

I have had a flu shot every year since about 1970, and I have ONLY had any reaction whatever once. I had a mild feeling of malaise for about four hours the next afternoon. I did have the flu once about 12-15 years ago — a different virus from the vaccine — and was sick for weeks. I do everything possible to avoid risking a recurrence of that experience. Asthmatics are in the high risk group for whom flu shots are especially recommended. See: http://www.kaiserpermanente.org/locations/midatlantic/newsroom/vaccin… Kaiser Permanente launches annual flu vaccination campaign "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Kaiser Permanente particularly recommend flu vaccinations for those who are at special risk for adverse flu reactions. As part of its campaign, Kaiser Permanente has sent flu shot reminders to more than 115,000 local members in high-risk categories. Those considered at "high-risk" for flu complications include those who: Are 65 or older; Have a chronic illness such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, or have a family member with a chronic illness; Have a weakened immune system, such as from HIV or cancer; Interact with a lot of people in school, work, or leisure settings; and Are pregnant and will be in the second or third trimester during the flu season, or are planning to become pregnant during the flu season. First flu shots were in 1942 I believe. I got it in the army. Had a two-three day mild fever and aching arm from the shot. Have had many since including during periods of fairly severe asthma. Never more than an mildly aching arm for a day. Most times not even that. My experience is that they are a pretty trivial experience any more. A respiratory infection on top of asthma could get pretty nasty. Think you should listen to your doctor.

They still use eggs to incubate the vaccine. We have been told by the Health Dept. that we have to make sure we ask if a person is allergic to eggs before we can give them the injection. Hi, I have a shot each winter but my doctor makes sure he weans me down to a lower dose of Pred. before I have the shot and then starts building them up again about a week later. I feel a bit off color for a few days but listening to "healthy people" they suffer too. I think it is worth the effort. The shot does not have the full effect I had a mild flu this winter (I was off work for a week, flu for 4 days and 1 day resting and having B12 shot and iron supplements at Docs.) some people in the office were away for 3 weeks!!! I consulted with both my GI and PCP about getting a flu shot being on the immunosuppressants, and both recommended that I get one, even after hearing that I almost always get the flu after getting the shot (got them for 7 years in the military). After talking with both doctors and thinking about it, I would rather be sick for a week now than several times through the winter. My cousin is allergic to eggs and also has Crohn’s but he can’t take the flu shot as he reacts to it and one time it was rather serious. So I would definitely check with your doctor and maybe an allergist to be tested to see if you are allergic to eggs. If you have been on Prednisone in the past year you should inform the nurse, according to the information I have from my pharmacist. In fact, if you are on any drugs for IBD or otherwise, I’d disclose that information. Related: when I was in the hospital, they mentioned something about TB vacination, but I do not recall the details. I think the statement was in reference to pred and reduction in immune system response.

Julie, I was allergic to eggs as a child and thought I outgrew it. My doctor gave me a skin test with the vaccine and I developed a huge hive at the sight of the injection. He told me not to get the vaccine. This was a number of years ago so I had never tried again. When I started working at a clinic there was a doctor who said that if a person is allergic to eggs they can take 1/10 of a cc intradermally and still get up to 80% immunity. I have been doing this for the past 4 years and it has worked out quite well. I still get a giant hive on my arm but feel it is a small price to pay. You could ask your doctor about this. Response:
Not this year. Last year I got sick from the flu shot (granted, I was run-down when I got the shot). I suffered a "mini" flu for seven days (fever, weak). And then when my husband and son got the flu, I got it again!! This year I got treated homeopathically for the flu (for the first time). We’ll see how it goes. Either way, it will be a long time until I get the flu shot again. Diana CD ‘81
Response:
Pam, I have gotten them every year for a long time except for this year. I got the flu last year in spite of the shot, so this year I am going to wing it and see what happens. I have never had an adverse effect on my IBD from the shot, to answer your question. Mark CD c/o 88

Response:
Just one more thing to add… if anyone does get the flu, make sure you get to the doc early… there is a drug available (called Relenza, I believe). My husband got the flu last year, and was able to use this inhaler. It cut down his time being sick from the average of 7-10 days to 3-4. But you have to catch it early, or the docs won’t give it to you. Just a suggestion in case anyone gets hit by it this year. Hi Pam, I’ve been getting a flu shot for years. I don’t think I’d go without as I came down with it a few yrs back when another strain of flu came out they weren’t expecting. I don’t think I’ve ever, ever felt so bad in my life!!! I’d have abdominal surgery before having the flu again. That case, unfortunately, ended in pneumonia. Even colds, for me, end up with bronchitis. I finally was able to get my shot last week at Kroger no less! My doctor’s office is still waiting for their shipment of vaccines and I was afraid to wait any longer. Linda p.s. I also had the one time only pneumonia shot a few years ago and would advise others that have trouble with upper respiratory problems to have it too.

Hi Pam I got the flu shot 3 weeks ago. My main reason was that i take imuran which supresses the imunesystem, and therefore it takes longer to recover. An ordinary cold takes me 2-3 weeks to recover from. Take care Lars cd class of 98

Pam, I got the shot, on the advice of my allergist. I ran a fever for several days afterwards but my GI and I are not sure if it was due to the shot or the abscess I developed from my fistula (neither of which are related).

I’ve gotten the flu shot every year since I was dxed (in 97 or so). I’ve had no problem with it. My GI believes very strongly in IBD patients getting the shot. I got mine (when there weren’t *any* to be had) at his office. Rebecca

Question:
Maybe your son should try inhalers with a spacer if he is old enough.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello everyone, This is my first post to this newsgroup — thanks for the warm welcome! My son has asthma and requires 2-3 nebulizer treatments a day. Acknowledged, I may have made an unwise generalization here. For a child unable to use an MDI/spacer/DPI properly a nebulizer _may_ be necessary. "Generally" people using nebs a lot are using them with bronchodilators; if so this is more appropriately addressed some other way. Cromolyn is a safe alternative and if effective is a good way to go. It also needs multiple daily treatments to be effective; hence your treatment program with the neb. If that program is working for you without serious problems or relapses than on the surface it appears sound. I know people can get kind of touchy on these sites. I don’t contribute often since there is a fair amount of good advice here. My primary point was actually the battery issue and maybe I should have stuck to that. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I looked at the site; at $170 it is a pretty low price for a portable USN. A concern would be the rechargeable battery. They tend to be proprietary (not owner replaceable) and very expensive for most of the portables. Compressor driven models usually don’t perform as well as A/C models so they don’t get used while at home and the battery goes bad from neglect. I have no experience with this particular model though. You might take a look at the OMRON, more expensive, some find it fragile (I expect the Medisana is also), but it can use normal AA batteries or rechargeable AA’s for a fraction of the cost. When I mentioned "traveling" I meant driving far distances and staying in hotel/motel rooms. We’d just like to be able to avoid stopping at rest areas, having to lug out the nebulizer, and searching for AC outlets at 10:00 at night when a nebulizer treatment is needed. Things would be so much easier if our son could just sit in the back seat and have his treatment. I have considered buying one of the DC-to-AC converters that plugs into the power outlet on the vehicle, but a product like I mentioned would seem to be easier. Thanks for the reply! Kendall F. I know exactaly what you mean. I have a pulmo-aid and it is bulky and heavy. My insurance would not help pay for a portable one and they are very expensive. Since I am a very severe asthmatic I do not leave home any length of time with out it. Sometimes I have to nebulize every 4hrs around the clock when I feel bad. I solved the problem by using a inverter to plug into the ciger lighter in the car which I plug the nebulizer into. ( We did have to change the lighters fuse) This works very well and it will reach into the back seat without a problem. For the hotels I set my nebulizer up on the table with all the meds beside it. ( I don’t have little kids to worry about getting into the bottles) The beds are usually close enough the nebulizer can reach the bed without a problem. I know it is a hassle to awalys carry the thing around and it takes up alot of room in the car. But it does give me the freedom to go places I would not be able to without worrying about right electrial outlets and clean condictions to nebulize in.

Question:
I am a 23 year old who has had excercise induced asthma since I was 16. Until I was 22, I was able to control my symptoms with Proventil. In the past year, I developed horrible asthma symptoms on a regular basis, not just from excercise. While I have been able to control the symptoms with Pulmicort and Serevent during regular activity, I am still unable to excercise easily. It take me weeks to build up the ability to jog on a treadmill for 10 minutes. I have always been an active person and have become frustrated and angered by my inability to excercise.
Ask your doctor about FloVent. I consider it a miracle drug since my asthma and COPD are slowly improving ever since I started taking it. If anyone has any suggestions on medications and/or other techniques that help them with their excercise induced asthma, please contact me by email at Monitoring you lung condition with a peak flow meter can let you know where you are at: an Action Plan can be used to adjust asthma drugs per peak flow readings. If anyone has any suggestions on medications and/or other techniques that help them with their excercise induced asthma, please contact me by email at

Hi I’ve found the Buteyko breathing technique very useful when exercising, I now no longer need to use Ventolin before exercise. Give it a try. Buteyko is a breathing technique. But unlike many other breathing methods Buteyko’s aim is to breath less. Buteyko has improved my asthma, reduced my Ventolin to zero and my steroids by half. I would recommend all asthmatics to try it to see if it works for them. However a word of warning, some have felt so good after using it for a few months they have thrown their medication away. You should continue to carry your medication even though your asthma may be in remission. Buteyko is a great method to help reduce asthma – it is not a miracle cure. For a good introducing and more information on Buteyko try http://www.wt.com.au/~pkolb/buteyko.htm. It is best viewed by using the option to download the whole site and then read at leisure. There is quite a lot of it. See the ‘Get Started Now’ section, to get you started. It is completely free. But for both sides of the camp go to http://home.netscape.com/ and search for Buteyko using SNAP. This will give you other sites of interest including http://home.pacbell.net/colin/ which is Colin Campell’s rejection of the method (which I disagree with). Norman

I wonder why he didn’t talk with you about your medication now instead of postponing it. The same goes for talking about your sister’s death. You were scheduled for aan appointment, weren’t you? Or didn’t he have enough time? Well, you will survive another two weeks but it’s a bit disappointing that nothing was talked about. Maybe lowering ther Zoloft dose is a good idea. In our current culture, shorts seem like kind of a no-no on men when you’re dressing remotely to impress anyway. Fine for being comfortable or playing sports, but it doesn’t particularly make you look good, even with nice legs. (Endurance weenie shaving culture aside?;) )
I guess not, hence the negative reaction. I suppose I was thinking as a bloke, not a woman. Men like to see the bare legs of women so I figured that women would like to see the bare legs of men. Sad

… Give up? Yeah damn right! I’ve tried with women, I really have. I’ve tried being witty, intelligent and thoughtful. I’ve even tried appealing to their baser instincts by deliberately wearing shorts in order to show my legs off. An attempt to show bare male skin in a sexual way (I’m desperate!) but what did I get? Either indifference or comments like ‘His legs look yukky’.
Well, at least I’ve never had this problem. On several occasions I’ve actually considered entering one of those "sexy legs" contests that clubs sometimes have, but I’ve never done it because I figure my height and nerdy appearance would subtract too much from what I’m sure wouldn’t be an objective evaluation of my legs. Or maybe I was just too shy to enter any of them. Forget women for awhile. You’re likely a ways away from the point where you can be successful. Don’t agree with me? Are you really sure? Are you confident that there’s something about you that’s rare that there should be a woman who wants you for it? Then go sell yourself. Match.com profile and two dates that were best forgotten, both a real confidence shatterer and im basically a wreck now. tearing myself apart in private and im mentally going downhill fast. I have always been shy but i seem to be getting worse at the whole social thing. Any suggestions how i can get back before i crack completely and wander off into the bush.
Forget women for awhile. You’re likely a ways away from the point where you can be successful. Don’t agree with me? Are you really sure? Are you confident that there’s something about you that’s rare that there should be a woman who wants you for it? Then go sell yourself. Spend quite a lot of time, maybe a year or two, focusing on improving yourself, and living a life you consider interesting, and aren’t ashamed to tell people about. What do you really want to do on weekends? Make it happen. If you’re not happy with your body, fix that. If you’re not employed, get employed. If you don’t like your clothes, fix that too. If you can’t talk to people, force yourself to learn. You can allow yourself to feel depressed and like complaining sometimes, but don’t make it chronic. Focus more on things you can do right now, and have some contempt for long term planning. (And especially plans for tomorrow, rather than right now.)

Another Drowsy Day – Lexapro Update
Question:
Well, I took Lexapro at 7 PM last night and I am feeling incapacitated with drowsiness right now. This is not good ! I am starting to lose my patience with this med. It’s been a good 10 days of incapacitating drowsiness. Why bother taking a med at all if it’s going to incapacitate me ? I left a voice mail with my pdoc. I’ll have to wait to see what he thinks. I’m ready to axe this med and either go back to Zoloft at 100 mg or try something else. Does anybody have a recommendation for an SSRI or AD that relieves anxiety and depression without turning me into a sleepwalker ? Thanks, Tony — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Celexa may have less effect on your libido, or it may be worse. The only way to find out is to try it. In most cases you can switch between SSRIs (and SSRIs to TCAs, SSNRIs) overnight. But there are other things you could try first. Do a search of ASAP’s archives at Deja (or whatever they are now called) for " sexual dysfunction ". Best wishes Ian

Hi Everyone, I haven’t posted here before- I’m hoping to find someone here who understands what I’m going through. I am dealing with the trauma of being sexually abused by my ex-husband and started having flashbacks about a month ago. It’s been a year since we divorced but I just began to acknowledge that what he did to me was sexual abuse last October. I think I repressed a lot of the memories because they were too painful to confront. I was raped on numerous occasions throughout our relationship but at the time didn’t want to acknowledge that rape could happen between married people. Most of the information I find on sexual abuse is about children who have been abused, which is a horrible thing for any child to have to go through, but I feel alone in that my sexual abuse happened in my adulthood and with the person who said he loved me. I started taking Zoloft recently for depression and PTSD- supposedly Zoloft has been approved to treat PTSD and the anxiety and stress related to it. It seems to be helping and I haven’t had any flashbacks since being on it but I’m getting headaches and feeling fatigued most of the time. Does anyone else taking Zoloft have these side effects? Just curious. Thanks for reading! Amy
Response:
Amy, Welcome to the ng. You experiences are not uncommon and although many of us may have experienced differing traumas – the way we react, the symptoms of PTSD are usually extremely similar. It is good that you are getting help now. The sooner people are treated after the trauma, the chance that the severity of your symptoms can be lessened. Keep it up – therapy and medications are our most useful tools right now. Medications are often a trial and error process too. Side effects such as headaches and fatigue may lessen with time. Most SSRIs like Zoloft need 6 to 8 weeks to become fully effective. If side effects are still present and hard to deal with after 2-3 months, it might be an idea to try another one. Effexor has also been found to be effective against PTSD. I’ve taken Prozac, Effexor and am now on Wellbutrin and find they all help to differing degrees. I changed from Prozac to Effexor because of persistant headaches, then changed to Wellbutrin because of I couldn’t control my weight on the other two. It takes time but the end result is worth it. There are some good websites with alot of information on PTSD and medications: http://www.trauma-pages.com/index.phtml http://www.ptsd.com/ http://www.mentalhealth.com/ Feel free to ask any questions and take care! Hi Lesleyanne, Thanks for replying to my post. So how does PTSD affect you? For me, the flashbacks can be brief recollections or I can actually feel like the trauma is reoccurring- kind of a suspension of reality if you know what I mean. I also deal with this low-level ongoing sense of anxiety. So it actually helps to deal with the trauma sooner rather than waiting? Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth pursuing the trauma- if one can actually reach some kind of resolve. I’m hoping so. Thanks for the info on the medications. It helps. Take Care, Amy
Response:
Amy, It is important to deal with the trauma in your therapy. You need to understand how your condition has progressed from the trauma to your current symptoms. It helps your mind come to terms with how it has affected you. A good therapist can help with this while medication helps the symptoms. Dealing with the trauma as quickly as possible after the trauma has ended is key – you can see how this idea is practiced after the school shootings in the states where counsellors are brought in immediately and the students are encouraged to talk about their feelings. In such cases, followups are imperative so as to intervene if symptoms begin to show. If this had happened for me I have no doubt that I would be in much better shape. I even saw a psychiatrist after I returned from Bosnia in 94, but he treated me as if I was a trouble maker and indicated that if I didn’t stop, my career would be in jeopardy. This was all too common practice in the canadian forces up to recently when they initiated a host of programs to prevent and treat PTSD in veterans. Too late for me and alot of other people….which is what forced them to act. Right now, most of my symptoms are kept in check with medication – wellbutrin and imovane (for sleep). I don’t work and am waiting for my release from the armed forces. That in itself I believe will be a great relief for me. I can’t wait. People here have PTSD from many different types of traumas, but I think that quite often folks can still relate to each other, because they have been through some very difficult experiences or are living with the symptoms of PTSD. You might be able to find some articles, resources, etc, out there however, which do address your own trauma more specifically. I would try looking around on some of the PTSD-related websites out there, including: http://www.trauma-pages.com/index.phtml I hope that helps. Perhaps it might also be worthwhile finding out if there are any active groups/organisations in the area for women who have been through an abusive relationship, as they might be able to offer you support, or to put you in touch with other women who have survived a similar situation…? Just a thought anyway. Either way, welcome to the newsgroup. :^) Mae Tang (replace "nospam" with "nu-it" for a valid e-mail address) The Scampering Rat Page http://www.nu-it.demon.co.uk/scamp/

Hi Amy, I just wanted to let you know that you aren’t alone…. I too was sexually (physically and mentally) abused by my ex. as an adult. When you wrote "with the person who said he loved me" it really hit home for me. I believe my ex really thought he loved me… but his idea or definition of love is a hell of a lot different then mine. It makes me so angry when I hear people deny that rape occurs between husband and wife, I am not referring to your self denial that events happened to you… that I understand, but rape is rape no matter how the rapist is related to the victim. I hope you improve with your side affects from the medication and I wish you the best, Patricia. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -

Whey has a very high lysine to arginine ratio (2.75). I wonder if that is the reason why it works as an antiviral. Lysine has been shown to inhibit herpes viruses and may work against HIV. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1996 PAGE 8 FINDING A WHEY Could limit HIV spread by Joe Nicholson Daily News Staff Writer Researchers yesterday said a substance made from whey, the liquid taken out of milk in making cheese, may have the power to stop the spread of the AIDS virus during intercourse. Robert Neurath, a virologist at the New York Blood Center, held out the hope that the substance, dubbed B69, could be used as a foam or cream, like spermicides. Neurath said he hit upon B69 after testing 68 other compounds with disappointing results: "It was a combination of persistence and luck, as is usual in life." Neurath’s experiments, reported in February’s Nature Medicine journal, showed that B69 blocks HIV from entering CD4 cells, the immune cells the virus destroys. Researchers cautioned, however, that B69 applications may not be a 100% preventive because it is uncertain whether B69 also would block other cell-entry sites. "The compound could serve as the basis for preventive measures against HIV transmission…to supplement other barrier methods, like condoms," said the researchers. Neurath said another big advantage of B69 was that a dose likely would cost only a few cents. Neurath, whose laboratory work was funded with a $200,000 federal grant, said he was trying to raise at least $50,000 for animal testing. Dr. John Adamson, president of the New York Blood Center, said B69 has the potential to save tens of thousands of lives. The treatment must first be tried on animals, and then, possibly a year from now, on humans. The last big hope for stopping sexual spread of AIDS, Nonoxynol-9, was a disastrous failure, said Dr. Jeffrey Laurence of the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Laurence, an AIDS researcher at Cornell Medical School as well as the foundation’s senior scientist for programs, said Nonoxynol-9 was tested in Africa several years ago. "There were actually more infections in people who got the product," said Laurence. "It seemed to cause irritation in the vagina, and the hypothesis was that it eased the way for the AIDS virus." Neurath said that unlike, Nonoxynol-9, B69 isn’t toxic to cells, so researchers "don’t expect…similar problems with this compound." Neurath displayed a test tube of B69 liquid and said he was optimistic it would not cause negative reactions because it is a natural substance. James M. Lysine has been shown to inhibit : herpes viruses and may work against HIV. : NEW YORK DAILY NEWS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1996 PAGE 8 : FINDING A WHEY : Could limit HIV spread : by Joe Nicholson : Daily News Staff Writer : Researchers yesterday said a substance made from whey, the liquid : taken out of milk in making cheese, may have the power to stop the spread : of the AIDS virus during intercourse. : Robert Neurath, a virologist at the New York Blood Center, held : out the hope that the substance, dubbed B69, could be used as a foam or : cream, like spermicides. : Neurath said he hit upon B69 after testing 68 other compounds : with disappointing results: "It was a combination of persistence and : luck, as is usual in life." : Neurath’s experiments, reported in February’s Nature Medicine : journal, showed that B69 blocks HIV from entering CD4 cells, the immune : cells the virus destroys. : Researchers cautioned, however, that B69 applications may not be : a 100% preventive because it is uncertain whether B69 also would block : other cell-entry sites. : "The compound could serve as the basis for preventive measures : against HIV transmission…to supplement other barrier methods, like : condoms," said the researchers. : Neurath said another big advantage of B69 was that a dose likely : would cost only a few cents. : Neurath, whose laboratory work was funded with a $200,000 federal : grant, said he was trying to raise at least $50,000 for animal testing. : Dr. John Adamson, president of the New York Blood Center, said : B69 has the potential to save tens of thousands of lives. The treatment : must first be tried on animals, and then, possibly a year from now, on : humans. : The last big hope for stopping sexual spread of AIDS, : Nonoxynol-9, was a disastrous failure, said Dr. Jeffrey Laurence of the : American Foundation for AIDS Research. : Laurence, an AIDS researcher at Cornell Medical School as well as : the foundation’s senior scientist for programs, said Nonoxynol-9 was : tested in Africa several years ago. : "There were actually more infections in people who got the : product," said Laurence. "It seemed to cause irritation in the vagina, : and the hypothesis was that it eased the way for the AIDS virus." : Neurath said that unlike, Nonoxynol-9, B69 isn’t toxic to cells, : so researchers "don’t expect…similar problems with this compound." : Neurath displayed a test tube of B69 liquid and said he was : optimistic it would not cause negative reactions because it is a natural : substance. : James M.
