Singulair and Allegra/Claritin/Zyrtec – Take Together Or Stagger?
Question:
(I asked this question a few days ago but it was buried in a longer post and I received no responses here.) I’d like to know what those of you who take both Singulair and Allegra/Claritin/Zyrtec do in terms of timing your medications – do you take them together or have you found it more effective to stagger them? I just added Singulair to my regime. Since they treat different things related to allergies, I expect it wouldn’t make much, if any, difference, but I’m curious to know if it has made a difference for anyone here. I have HEPA filters in my home therefore fewer problems with allergies overnight than during the day, so I’m currently taking both Singulair and Allegra/180 when I get up in the morning in order to have maximum effect when I’m out of the house during the day. Thanks in advance. -S-

A side-effect of Singulair can be weird, vivid dreams. Because of this some people have posted saying they have started taking the Singulair in the morning.
Response:
A study presented at the latest AAAI meeting indicated that if you were on Singulair, you no longer need Claritin. My own personal experience though was when I tried to go without Zyrtec, the sneezing fits I had under control returned. My internet buddy in Texas has also returned to using both.

Mabye it’s just psychosomatic (sp?), but when I take Claritin my allergy problems clear up, and I take Singulair every night.

pranayama and asthma
Question:
hello, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to which pranayama exercises are most appropriate for asthmatics. I.ve been practicing for about two years and have recently begun to explore pranayama. I sometimes find, however, that this can antagonize my symptoms. Fortunately, when this happens, I’ve always been able to return to "normal" breathing but it can be rather frustrating. Thanks in advance for your help. Namaste, Kyle
Response:
I have asthma and I never though of pranayama as something that would relieve the symptoms or the disease. It can’t hurt, after all asthma effects exhaling and pranayama, for the most part, concentrates on exhaling. I find that doing head and shoulder stands followed by bridge and fish are great. You get to really stretch out the lungs and get to breathe deeply…expanding lung capacity is a good thing for asthmatics. I also take medication (Severent and Pulmicort) and exercise. Combined with yoga I’m virtually symptom free. Good luck,

Hello Kyle, it’s a long way – be patient. Especially breathing exercises for ppl with breathing diseases. I practice Yoga + Pranayama now for 12 years and slowly start to "understand" now how to meditate on the breath in a relaxed and joyful way. I wish I "only" would have Asthma – I have only 30% lung capacity – but it is possible to heal the relationship with the breath. But it needs patience – allways and a lot of love, forgiving understanding and patience – for your-self. Don’t give up + enjoy. Sat Nam – Hari Har Singh PS: There are many different ways of pranayama, working with the breath. Maybe you’ll also try something different.
Response:
yes – yes – yes – that is where it came from. A manual with our human frailties listed in alphabetical order. and things to do to facilitate healing. is this the one that says the "asthma will fly from your body like a crow from a clap of the hands"?
Yes, it is. Page 53 The exersise is 1-3 min. long we forgot to mention
Sat Nam – Hari Har Singh
Response:
dear asthma sufferer, ask your healthcare professional if it is o.k. for you to do this stand up, heels together. hands are overhead with palms together. lean back as far as possible and do breath of fire for 1-3 minutes. you can lean on back of sofa to avoid falling. but lean back as far as you can. peace
Ah, you practice Kundalini Yoga? It’s one of the KY classics for the lungs – can be found in the book "Yoga for Health and Healing" ISBN 0-940992-01-9 For additional copies of that manual write to: Alice B. Clagett P.O. Box 3142 Santa Monica, CA 90408 Phone: (310)393-8167 Sat Nam – Hari Har Singh PS: If you have problems with breath of fire you can also practice this exercise with long deep breathing.

Therapist #1, second interview
Question:
I saw the first therapist again, because the first session was mostly a case history; this year’s been really incredible. She said I pretty much had GAD and some depression, which is what I thought. We had a CBT session on my topmost issue, which is giving up our place in town and having to move to my wife’s place out in the country. She showed me I was catastrophizing there and had me look at alternatives. I did see that CBT is no deep dark mystery; it’s what I used to call "brainstorming": toss out alternatives with someone else and try a few. I think I could work with her. I’ll admit, I couldn’t have heard from someone at the public clinic about the moving issue, since I was afraid they wouldn’t be sympathetic; many of their clients are one step from being out on the street! So now I feel better about the public clinic. I also know that I have an alternative. Since I’m getting my meds (Effexor XR, 150 mg; Depakote 1000 mg) at the clinic, it would be better to have them coordinate. I’ll give it all more thought. No Depression Relief
Question:
Has anyone heard of Zoloft withdrawal lasting longer than a couple of weeks? I was taking 200 to 250 mg Zoloft daily (increased during PMS) and then switched to Celexa. I was frustrated with neither of them helping my depression, so I unwisely abruptly discontinued the medication. My withdrawal symptoms ranged from moderate to severe…initially, I experienced extreme agitation, anxiety, crying, uncharacteristic rage, and formication (sensation that bugs were crawling on me). With the help of my doctor, I restarted a low dose of Celexa (I had been on 20 mg prior to this) and tapered off–but still quicker than I should have because I’m stubborn. The main problems that persisted for a couple of weeks were numbness and tingling in my arms and legs, and then spontaneous pain or muscle spasms in my legs. (Pretty darn painful). That and gastro-intestinal distress. My doctor felt that most of this was actually withdrawal from the Zoloft, not Celexa. She felt that the Celexa had prevented me from going into Zoloft withdrawal, but when I discontinued Celexa, the Zoloft withdrawal kicked in. From what I’ve read about other people’s experiences with Zoloft withdrawal, my symptoms do appear to match theirs. I had been taking Zoloft (at different doses) for about 4 years. I tried other medications during that time, but I was unable to tolerate most of them. I am very sensitive to medications and tend to have side effects with just about everything I take, usually to the point where I don’t want to take anything. Back to the symptoms–after 2-1/2 weeks, these symptoms diminished. 3-1/2 weeks after the initial discontinuation, however, I had a flare-up of gastro-intenstinal distress that lasted a day or two. Then, 4-1/2 weeks after the initial discontinuation (maybe 2 weeks since stopping the mild tapering-off) I experienced the leg pain, numbness, tingling along with severe stomach cramps and such. I did not expect to still be experiencing withdrawal symptoms, so I’m confused. Am I imagining things? Is this something else? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Anyone know what would cause depression after ejaculation?
Question:
Modern SSRI antidepressants are good at preventing both depression and ejaculation…..
It’s a well known but little discussed side effect of drugs like prozac, zoloft, effexor, citalopram….. Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I’ve had since I was a teenager. Everytime I ejaculate, I get a feeling of depression x approximately 2-3 days. It has nothing to do with anything psychologically but I feel is biochemical. Does anyone know of a solution or can direct me to a solution for this problem? Thanks R

It is possible to abuse sex. It can be very effective as a means of reducing anxiety. It is an addiction much as drinking exsessive amounts of alcohol. Doubt if it’s biochemical any more then an alcoholic that feels depressed when drinking. Contact a therapist that knows anything about sexual issues. And a lot of them don’t know so don’t settle for the first you find. They might also tell you if there is a possibillity that it is a biochemical reaction. J.

Further, and unrelated to what I’m direclty replying to, here are some excerpts from Topic 6.3 in "The Owner’s Manual for the Brain" by Pierce J. Howard with additional information about caffeine: "Caffeine belongs to a class of compounds called methylxanthines, along with theophylline and theobromine, all of which have the ability to trick the brain into thinking they are the neurotransmitter adenosine. Adenosine is a relaxant that is required to restore the central nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic arousal, or from stress to relaxation. By finding adenosine receptor sites, caffeine blocks the relaxig effects of adenosine and maintains high arousal." "Caffene’s arousing properties were found to be associated not only with mental alertness, but also with physical endurance". "It inhibits phosphodiesterase (PDE). PDE is an enzyme that breaks down adenosine, so inhibiting PDE makes more adenosine available. This results in psychmotor stimulation, increased alertness, faster heart rate, and faster breathing. Excessive arousal appears to result in errors of commission (for example, typographical errors), whereas deficient arousal appears to result in errors of omission (for example, skipping a paragraph while typing)." "If the less impulsive person consumes caffeinated beverages upon waking, he or she will tend to perform poorly on complex mental tasks. If the more impulsive person tries a complex mental task upon waking before consuming a caffeinated beverage, he or she will tend to perform poorly. Toward the end of the day, this pattern switches: in the evening, less impulsive people perform complex mental tasks better with a hit of caffeine,; more impulsive people perform complex tasks better without it." "Some of these compounds [in caffeine] are antioxidants, the chmicals that disarm (or bind) free radicals and inhibit their insatiable appetite for vital cell membranes." "Ten grams is a lethal dose, while for small children 35 milligrams per kilogram of body weight is toxic." "Consumption of 400 to 500 milligrams of caffeine per day is associated wtih dependence. Symptoms of caffeine dependence are diarrhea, nausea, light-headedness, irregular heartbeat, irritability, and insomnia." "The arousal effects of one cup of caffeinated coffee last about 6 hours but vary according to the individual." "Women who drink coffee are less likely to commit suicide than those who don’t according to a report in the Archives of internal Medicine." "Coffee has a dark side: the DSM-IV includes four caffeeine-related diagnoses: caffeine intoxication, caffeine-related anxiety disorder, caffeine-related sleep disorder, and (in the appendix) caffeine withdrawl. In addition to these problems, caffeine, a stimulant, can wreak havok with calming prescription drugs such as antidepressants, antianxiety medications, and neuroleptic tranquilizers." "Higher caffeine consumption was found to be correlated with lower academic perfrormance." "Check out the newsgroup alt.drugs.caffeine on the Internet for furth information and discussion. etched permanently in the ether: BUT I understand that the amount of caffeine in chocolate is not high, and it may not be in "chocolate flavoring" at all.
From my phsych pharm class–a long time ago: It takes 5 to 10 cups of coffee per day to become addicted to the caffeine. It takes a LOT less of Mountain Dew or other similar drinks. It takes a pound of chocolate a day to get enough caffeine to risk addiction. HOWEVER, chocolate also contains theobromine a stronger stimulant than caffeine–so be aware of this fact.

Interestingly enough, I was completely caffiene-free for five years preceding and throughout my first manic episode. For that matter, I was a complete health nut…. had given up smoking for 7 years, ran 3-5 miles daily, lifted weights, drank no caffienated beverages, and ate a vegetarian diet of whole grains. It really perplexed my G.P….. he kept offering the standard insomnia advice to "eat well, exercise early in the day, stay away from caffiene" yet still I could not sleep. These days, I am smoking a pack a day again, eating meat, don’t ever exercise, and drink gallons of coffee. Go figure. jen * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

I don’t drink coffee..but I do LOVE caffeine! That’s why, for those morning’s I wake up achy and grogy with a "dull" headache..I grab Anacin, as besides ASA, it also has caffiene in it. It’s been a lifesaver sometimes, especially after a "night out". Plus, I find often on medications, you don’t get that "complete..refreshed" sleep. Robbie, P.J. Howard is old hat, such a bore. please.. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Further, and unrelated to what I’m direclty replying to, here are some excerpts from Topic 6.3 in "The Owner’s Manual for the Brain" by Pierce J. Weaning off from Paxil due to Weight Gain!!
Question:
1. Is there an easy way to discontinue Paxil? the withdrawal symptoms are horrible! 2. What is the safest anti-depressant in terms of not causing weight gain?? (I suffered a lot with Effexor and Paxil, think about something else!) Thanks! S. I have come to the conclusion that everyone responds differently to these meds and it’s hard to base what will work for you on something that worked for someone else. I gained weight on paxil, about 20lbs in three months. I stopped the paxil and immediately started prozac. After about seven months and a little more weight gain, I stopped the prozac because it wasn’t working well enough. Then I went to zoloft, which also caused a little weight gain, and was not very effective. Getting off zoloft was awful for me, I had to continue taking it while I started wellbutrine. This combo was fairly effective, but really made me tired, too tired to exercise. Then I went on effexor, which worked so well for me. I wasn’t tired, I didn’t gain weight, it worked fast and for over a year. I just recently had a major crash, and my doctor added celexa and upped the effexor to 375mg. The celexa stopped the suicidal ideation within three days. That was great, I don’t know how it will work in the long run, but so far I’m not hungry or extremely tired. Of course I wasn’t hungry before the celexa so I don’t know if this is still of symptom of the depression or an effect of the med. Twice almost cold turkey, back on 20 mg again. Couldn’t stand the withdrawal. Third time, chahnged it to Prozac (also 20 mg), and went down with the dose very gradually. Not biting the capsules in half, but simply forgetting about taking it. Once every day, then every other day, now I take it only when the time is rough. Don’t know if it can help you, but this is like, my only experience….. DG

Yes. (Tempting, but I suppose I could answer the question you didn’t ask as well, and say it’s venlafaxine, brand-named Efexor (Yes, only one ‘f’ over here, presumably there’s a effin shortage.).) — The opinions given above may be mine. They might also just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I, too, think that everyone responds very differently. The only med I’ve taken that caused me to gain weight was Celexa, and even then it was minimal. I’ve been on Zoloft, Effexor, Prozac, Serzone, you name it — currently taking a combination that includes Wellbutrin and Luvox. I’ve lost more weight than I’ve gained, actually. … Ask your doc about this, though, b/c I know that some meds are not associated w/weight gain. There’s no reason you should have to suffer from something *else*. Hope you feel better.

Hi all. I was wondering if Wellbutrin is effective. I am taking it cause I have mild depression. What exactly does it do? Any answers can be appreciated. Thanks. Keith
I’ve been on it about 6 weeks, and I think the lack of crashes indicates that it is working. I’m not happy-happy, but I’m not down too deep to see daylight, either. i’m lookig for AS MUCH information/ stories / anecdotes / yada yada on the Wellbutrin pill. i started it and within days i had an incredible increase in appetite = and violent tendencies, abrupt yelling, etc.
Everything I’ve heard says few people have side effects and most of them are very minor. I, on the other hand, hallucinated, could not sleep, had the shakes so bad I could barely hold a glass, etc….. YMMV — For more information about this service, send e-mail to:

Swallow. Now your whole mouth and throat will be numb. Pretty neat huh? Other than the recreational distraction this phenomenon offered, I got nothing out of Wellbutrin. I had to take a few milligrams of Xanax with them just to keep from going CRRAAZZYYYY. Whoops…too late. Shit. I’ve been on Wellbutrin for a month now and have found myself with a few
side effects. I have found myslef more aggressive, I’m usually a quiet, shy person. Have extreme trouble sleeping, only getting two or three hours a night and no naps during the day. It has given me energy, to much at times. Made me feel real great the first week or two but now the good effects aren’t as strong. My Doc says if I can’t start getting some sleep he will give me some sleeping pills, just what I need another pill. Madmax, "Life’s a bitch then you Die"

I’ve tried Zoloft, Prozac, Effexor, and am now upping my Wellbutin dosage while easing off with the Effexor. I’m also on lithobid to boost the antidepressant effect and Buspar to cut anxiety. When I first increased the Wellbutrin dosage it gave me some good effects, but I had bad mood swings pretty soon after. I’ve been fooling around with meds for four years with one break of a few months and still haven’t found a combination that truly works. Wellbutrin hasn’t given me many bad side effects….. Upping the Effexor made me gain weight so fast I got stretch marks. I also had dry mouth, constipation, spacy or tired feelings, occasional dizziness, and an increased heart rate. I don’t have any of that with Wellbutrin. At first I had some nausea especially when my blood sugar got low, but that’s worn off. Never tried the crunching and swishing technique: I think I can skip a numb mouth, and anyway my pills are big ones. Another pill popper, KaraG

Taken in prescribed dosage did absolutely nothing for me. Taking 80 in a period of 2 hours made me sick and I was quite pissed when I woke up alive. Hexe

Funny you should mention . . . . Wellbutrin . Not good for me – all I did was cry and cry ALL day. Alot of pain in my ears – was greatly relieved to go off – switched back to Zoloft, which has a few side effects I don’t like, but I can stay alive with.
Coming off Zoloft made me cry all day WITHOUT taking wellbutrin. Are you sure it was WB and not Zoloft comedown. When I come off SSRIs I get all teary and sappy. I know it’s different than returning depression, because when depressed I couldn’t cry to save my life. "Time never started at all. Chaos never died. The Empire was never founded. Hi: I’m interested in getting some information from others on their experiences with different medications. I was diagnosed in August and prescribed Zoloft – 50 mg daily. Three weeks ago I saw my doctor and told her that I wanted to change medication, as the Zoloft was just not doing anything. She switched me to Prozak 20mg daily. I feel worse now than on the Zoloft. No real side effects – just blank. I’d love to have a positive feeling about something, anything; just a positive feeling of any kind. I’ve found that on the Prozak I tend to have occasional feelings of deep sadness, for no reason – like after I go to the grocery store. I don’t remember having those on Zoloft. Anybody have any experiences to share? How many of you have been switched around on medications, before anything worked for you? Thanks for your input. Susan

Do you think you are still experiencing depression and/or anxiety. I’m not a doctor and agree you should report these symptoms to your MD. I’m aware that emotions like stress and anxiety often manifest themselves as physical symptoms such as the ones you describe. I’ve been taking wellbutrin for some time now. Currently I’m 6 weeks or so into stopping tranquilizers which I’d been prescribed for 14 years. Because of this it’s difficult to know what exactly, and in what proportion, to attribute my moods, however, despite the wellbutrin I still feel depressed and anxious. I’m quite sure the wellbutrin is keeping me from the devastating levels of depression which we’re all to familiar with. I know I’m running on but just wanted to share my experiences with you. Keep up the fight! CG – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – it for quite a while now but I experience bad mood swings and my chest is always hurting me, like burning or something. No chest pains for me, but I definitely have the mood swings. More correctly, I have occasional, *intense* emotions at each end of the spectrum. I can be REALLY motivated, or I can be a presure-cooker ready to explode. Stil, W’s been the best AD for me so far. I tried Zoloft (did nothing for me) and Paxil (worked for me for only two weeks before ‘pooping out’ on me. I’m also on Buspar for anxiety. Hope that helps. Hi, there, I’ve taken Wellbutrin and it worked for a while but (like w/every other med) I had to keep increasing dose. Going higher than 450mg/day is NOT allowed. Also, be careful re: the 6-8 space between doses. Any shorter time lapse can be harmful (possibly seizures could occur). Talk to your Dr. about this not working at this dose and I wish you good health. For years I had taken Prozac and approximately 6-8 months ago I fell into deep depression. At the recomendation of my doctor he suggested that I go to a psychiatrist. I fought this for awhile and then decided it was do something or die. The doctor changed my medicing to zoloft which I could not take then to Wellbutrin. He started me on 150mg a day changed it to 150mg twice a day atleast eight hours apart. It has helped greatly but I still have a prssimistic outlook and cry at the bat of a hat. He is going to up my dosage again to 400mg a day. If this does no improve my condition he will try adding (possible) a small amount of prozac along with the Wellbutrin. All this to say that there are a lot of different ways to work with these medication. Find you a good doctor who is schooled in the use of these drugs. There is help.
Response:
that it is working well. Does somebody have experience with this drug and what is a suitable alternative and dosage. Commments appreciatied… -=Patrick=-

Question:
Hi everyone, I have not posted to your group in a very long time. I have lost my support group and need your support in dealing with my GAD and life as a fellow sufferer. I have been suffering from GAD for over 3 yr. now and have been under treatment for about 1 and a half years. It’s been a long strange trip indeed
Currently I am taking Prozac and Knoplin (misspelled I know) and am having moderate success. I have tried many alternative medicines and pharmaceuticals in dealing with this disease and am anxious to share with the group and get feedback. Feel free to talk to me about anything or get on my ICQ list my ICQ number is 4058408. I would love to share information. Peace, lunarchld

Bonnie…..I’ll send you the ICQ program…..just run it while you are already online with AOL…..ICQ is just another communication form……you can see at a glance who is online, send quick messages like IM’s to people with other servers, and chat with people from other servers so you aren’t confined to AOL chat rooms. And the sound waves are cute! Anyone wanting the little program to run ICQ, drop me your e-mail address and I’ll send the program. I THINK it’s free…..I’ve had it about 6 months and it was when I logged on. Just send me your e-mail address and I’ll forward the program to you. KC

Yeah Cindy, as a matter of fact, I have it written down, somewhere, uuuhhhmmm, where is it??? Oh yes, here it is: 3206250 I have only one problem: I don’t have a clue what I can do with this Now I only hope you don’t come to visit me at night and do spooky things…… bye, Trudy the netherlands Remove "xx" from address when replying.

next time you are online Trudy, find the ICQ program and run it. Then "connect"…….you CHOOSE who you want to chat to, or send instant messages to. for instance……if you are online right now reading this…..you might hear a little voice say……"incoming message"…..then you click on receive, and it could be me sending a message to you while I’m online at the same time! I could also initiate a "chat" mode with you…..where a screen comes up and we can talk back and forth in real time. As I type my message, the letters come up on your screen!!! And you can answer immediately too! I’m a computer flunky, and if I can figure it out, ANYONE can. Jus tmake sure you run your program WHILE YOU ARE ALREADY ONLINE WITH YOUR ISP. I’ll add you to my list Trudy and you’ll get a system message! KC Cindy

Spike, as others, I appreciate all the effort your putting in for me. Thank You Stephanie – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Jenwolf may be correct. If you think that is the case do this, off-line; reboot, go to dos, type this: netstat -anc:netstat.txt. press enter, type this: exit press enter, that gets things back to windows. Then look in windows and a file called netstat.txt will be there. (notepad) If you know about ports, check it yourself, if not mail the text to me. With your type of connection you have. I don’t think that is the case, however. Still this little thing is good to know. spike If you believe that someone else is posting to usenet and forging your return e-mail address on their posts, then you too can send a copy of the offending post (with complete headers) to their ISP (and to their NNTP-Posting-Host if they are different). It is a violation of most ISP’s "acceptable use policy" or "terms of service" to forge someone else’s e-mail address. you might also want to check your machine for trojan horses. . .like netbus or subseven. they could be used to *easily* steal passwords and proceed to post or send email in the name of the person stolen from, *from* that person’s account(s). http://jenwolf.virtualave.net/
Response:
Jenwolf may be correct. If you think that is the case do this, off-line; reboot, go to dos, type this: netstat -anc:netstat.txt.
eh? no no no, you need to do netstat while you are *on* line. that way you can see who is connected to you or, if you’re fast enough who is sending you udp packets. as well as what ports are listening. some trojans listen on a certain port(s), which could be seen with an offline netstat, but i’ve never tried it. the easiest way, for someone who is not really in to the technicalities of networking, is to check the registry. hit the start button, then run, type in "regedit" and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE<MicrosoftWidowsCurrentVersionRun if there are any files there that end with exe, delete them. this will prevent the blasted thing from starting up every time you reboot. (or just exit the registry, use a virus cleaner to rid your system of them, reboot and check the registry again.) note the name of the file and then search the system for it and delete it. unfortunately there are a lot of rat trojans out there, so this may or may not work for all of them. the *best* way to be rid of the damned things is to lowlevel format the drive, most of the newer bios’ have a utility to do this, but it could be risky for certain hard drives. http://jenwolf.virtualave.net/
