Advair. My father died after taking this drug for 1 month.
Question:
I don’t know if it is because of Advair or not, but my father went into V-Fib 1 month after taking advair. He was very happy with the way he felt being on Advair, but never mentioned anything about the warnings. I just noticed that the warnings say that Advair can change heart rhythm. That is exactly what happened to my father. He never had heart problems before, in fact, his Dr has commented before that he has a very strong heart. I’m not sure where to go with this. I just want to make sure that everyone takes these warnings seriously. Please be careful. Having this happen to my father has been very difficult. Dave
Response:
It may have been a cumulative effect was he taking something else before Advair. Many asthma sufferers take a form of steroids and albuterol and heart problems are frequent. My best wishes to you and your family and thanks for a difficult reminder. Lane

Your comments can be true. However, since being on Advair, he hasn’t used his inhaler, and he hasn’t taken prednisone for quite some time. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It may have been a cumulative effect was he taking something else before Advair. Response:
It is always difficult to know if a drug side effect is responsible or not. The PDR lists the same 101 side effects for every drug. While I was takng "anyoldmycin" my stocks plunged, my car wouldn’t start and I cut myself shaving. Was all this caused by "anyoldmycin"? Unfortunately it takes a very long time to decide which – if any – ofthe 101 side effects are "real" and requires withdrawal of a medication. The ingredients in Advair are quite common ones and seem to help many persons. Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com http://www.TinnitusRelief.net http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic516.htm
Response:
Many people find Advair and Flovent disagreeable immedeiately. So they switch to Pulmicort, which, conversely, is not for everyone. These two are both powerful and effective steroids. Address:http://www.consumerlawpage.com/article/asthma.shtml Changed:9:56 PM on Friday, November 8, 2002

Foradil is a new long lasting beta2 agonist bronchodilator drug; somewhat similar to Serevent. However you should also be prescribed a preventor drug, usually a steroid inhaler, like the Pulmicort Turbuhaler [my favorite] or Flovent]. These drugs treat the underlying bronchial inflammation. Hi, I desperately need a link or info on side effects on this product. I have taken Foradil for a little over a month and it has worked wonders almost right away, but I ended up getting a lot of the side effects, the worst and most annoying being really bad twitches in my legs, up to every few minutes when I was on the twice a day inhalation. My doctor cut me back to 1 inhalation a day which has lessened the effects but not gotten rid of them completely and I am still faced with heart palpitations. This is not listed as a side effect but I am noticing increasingly bad foot cramps in the leg that is more twitchy and I get them at night, coincidentally I take my one dose at night. I talked to a pharmacist who doesn’t carry it, but he said it is uncommon to get muscle cramps from long acting bronchildialtors, any info would be greatly appreciated. P.S. I have reacted with foot and leg cramps from other asthma meds and it all started again shortly after starting this one. Otherwise I never experience them.

Here’s a link: http://www.virtualdrugstore.com/asthma/formoterol.html Formoterol (Foradil, United States and Canada) Excerpt: "Side Effects Formoterol or Foradil can affect the cardiovascular system, especially in high doses." You could try another long-acting bronchodilator; Serevent inhaler or theophylline SR (TheoDur). You could also try increasing steroid inhaler or adding Accolate/Singulair, and not using a long-acting bronchodilator. Foradil is not available in the US, and Canadian law restricts drug information to patients, so its hard to find detailed info. Foradil is also used in the UK and many other countries. Here’s a link on Serevent, a similar drug: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/salmet.htm salmeterol (Serevent) Excerpt: "Adverse Reactions: Adverse reactions to salmeterol are similar in nature to reactions to other selective beta2-adrenoceptor agonists, i.e., tachycardia; palpitations; immediate hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria, angioedema, rash, bronchospasm (see WARNINGS; headache; tremor; nervousness; and paradoxical bronchospasm (see WARNINGS)." Added benefits of pre-surgery: bone scan and cat scan. Bone scan found my arthritis (I could have told them), cat scan found a an unknown, unexplained lurker in my gut: a leiomyoma, which is a benign intestinal tumor. One out of 15 are discovered before autopsy… Mine was 5 * 7 * 10 cc; described as the size of a baby’s head. Leiomyoma was removed at the same time as the Prostate
John, Wow ….. What a break. Bet you never thought you’d say you were "lucky" to get PCa!! What’s the deal with that leiomyoma? Could it have grown and caused blockage problems down the road? Oh, my congrats on Mr. Happy. I hope to be posting the same info soon. Tom RRP 12/12/02

Yeah. It WAS causing problems, and as I think back, it was leaking a bit of blood. Eventually it would have been found without killing me first
) I’m glad that my trusty Urologist was following the instruction manual for dealing with PCa. He said that he liked to do the CAT scan because once in a while he picked up a kidney cancer. He found garbage in my case, but, as Ripley says in the first Alien Movie, "lucky-lucky-lucky." oh … and the surgeon who put my gut back together said that the leiomyoma tumors are slow-growing. It would take several years to get to the size of a golf-ball. I guess that sucker was in there for 20-30 years getting bigger and bigger

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was relieved of the prostate 11/18/2002. Started out with one or two pads, but was down to one pad after a week. Quit the pads on the weekends about 2 months post op, and went work on a Monday at about 3 months, forgetting the pad (as it worked for Dumbo, it worked for me ;o), but I did not need the crows to tell me that I could fly.) The ‘one thing’ that had been old-reliable since 18 months did not function… I got a script of vitamin V as my kindly Urologist refers to it… No blue vision, occasional headaches, and a pathetic boner (like Harry Potter: no bone, but flexible) Was also taking an anti-depressant (Paxil) classed as SSRI, widely known by pharmacists and psychatrists as a doggie-downer; anti-depressant was to treat the lump in the throat that developed concomitant with the dx of prostate cancer. Changed to Lexapro, a less potent SSRI anti-depressant, but still no cigar ;o) On the advise of a pharmacist friend, skipped the Lexapro last night and bingo-bongo-sproingo. Not quite Mr Happy, but certainly not mister Jell-O: it was insertion quality for sure.

onto a different anti-depressant. Happy to hear that both you and Mr. Happy are happy……as that side of things is not in my sphere of experience…..grin!! As to SSRI drugs, I know a lot about them because my daughter has a serotonin deficiency and has to take them. There are roughly 30 different brands, of which Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, Welbutrin, and Luvox are the more well known ones. They are all newer derivatives of Prozac to my knowledge, but our good doctor on this group can better inform you. E. has been on Luvox (horrible fatigue), Welbutrin (stopped working) and now Effexor, which is working quite well as it attacks the problem from a different angle. And each one worked for about 2 years, then she had to switch. And every darn one of them has a lot of side effects!! So speak to your doctor…….or better yet, your pharmacist…..and see if there isn’t one that won’t be a ‘doggie downer’. E. does not have that problem (G). But as these SSRI drugs seem to be for chemical deficiencies, perhaps there is a totally different anti-depressant that will do in the meantime, that won’t interfere with Mr. Happy. Just my 2 Cdn. cents worth……and if you can manage without them…..go for it. I refuse to take any myself at the moment and am doing OK without them. If I need a pill temporarily, I will certainly take one though. My rant on here last week got rid of a lot of it…..grin. (thanks, people) The way I look at it is that ‘depression’ is a not an abnormal thing when life is tough, and unless it *really* interferes with your enjoyment of life, it will get better on its own. I am not a doctor…..but on the flip side, I have seen the amazing difference in E’s life and also my sister’s……as she is battling the same Cheers…….Heather – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

The big question is…is it working? I just started and I wonder what I’m
After like one or two weeks on it, I noticed myself getting a little antsy and wanting to do something, but I still felt down and didn’t enjoy anything. That was kind of wierd, but the next week the other half got better too. I couldn’t sleep right though, and I twitched/spasmed a fair amount in my sleep, (no other side effects though–oh, except I often wake up from dreams totally soaked in sweat, and I mean whole-body damp spot here) so I started taking a little dose of trazodone each night before bed. That combination worked really really well for quite a while. Several months later I really didn’t feel like I was getting much from it anymore. I also started feeling more and more drugged/groggy in the morning and found out that I no longer needed the trazodone to sleep (ie it didn’t seem to have worn off by morning). We increased the effexor dose, and I seemed to get worse (especially sleeping a lot) so I brought the dose back down, and also tried taking it before bed (since, heck, it seemed to be making me sleep). That actually helped. Currently, I’m taking effexor before bed and welbutrin in the morning and afternoon. I still twitch a lot, especially before I wake up–I think maybe it would be best to take the effexor like 4 hours before waking instead of before bed, but I can’t really manage that… I’m still far from the best I felt on the effexor, though. My wife’s also taking effexor now, and it has helped her quite a bit, although she has only been on it a few months, so I don’t know if it will change. By the way: you _really_ do have to take it at the same time every day. There have even been times where I’m pretty sure it needed to be taken with food to work well. Hi All, I’m seeing my PCP about my concerns with Zoloft. I’v been on it for maybe three months now and the only positive thing I can say is that it was a far cry better for me than Wellbutrin. I couldn’t tell if the Zoloft eased the anxiety at the switch or if just stopping the W did it. Now for the problems–obviously not initial side effects. Weight gain and unable to lose it not matter what I do–I’m not in to fads, just a good diet and as much excersize as I can tolerate. I’ve tried low fat, then low carb–all smart and balanced as I don’t want it to be in vain as soon as I start eating normally again. But I get no results. This is chipping away at my self esteem (and this has never happened to me before and I’m in my 40’s). Gritting/clenching my teeth. At first I thought it was recent dental work (crowns) but it is getting to be so severe that it is causing headaches and I can’t chew anything more firm than cooked rice. Meat? Forget it! I have been back to the dentist twice and though I haven’t completely let him off the hook, I think since I notice the teeth clenching all day long, I have to take some responsibility and look into the Zoloft possibility. I have small involuntary twitching in my arms and legs. It’s unnerving–I hate it. I fear parkinsons or something similar though, again, it started after I was on the Zoloft for a few months. Heightened anxiety all of a sudden. I was down to .75mgs daily and now am up to twice that–conciously I think for the teeth clenching–it seems to help a little–but also my entire disposition, mood, all over feel. I have horrible nightmares every nightl. I can not even bring myself to tell you the content. They seem to last for ever and if you consider the worst possible thing that could happen to a parent, that is what I am dealing with almost every night. I seem to sob all night long, though I know dreams are very short. Consequently, I wake up with a horrible yet relieved feeling–but very exhausted. I used to get canker sores as a child. NOT COLD SORES–they are so often confused with one another. My mom took me to many doctors and there was nothing they could do back then–I’m hoping medicine has made some progress in this area. This has to be some of the worst pain I have ever had to endure and they seem to be nonstop–two or three coming on the heels of another two or three just healing. I am guaranteed a canker sore (mine always result from trauma) if I eat chips, crisp french bread, if I bite the inside of my cheek when eating. They last a good 1 1/2 to 2 weeks and I realize that the Zoloft may not be to blame but I like to be informed when I see the doc. I have seen a few studies posted here recently about the teeth clenching. Truly, I don’t know if I benefit at all from the Z. I am taking it for anxiety not depression. If anyone has any suggestions or has heard of any one else with a similar story. Any links to pertinent info also greatly appreciated. Finally, does anyone know how well Buspar seems to be working for GAD-ites. Since it’s not a member of the SSRI family—I read somewhere that pre-existing conditions can be exaserbated–something to do with the dopamine????? Obviously, I need some intelligent help here LOL.

Hi.. I see you are in your mid 40s,, just have to ask, are you female?? I have found out that many of my symptoms including my anxiety ( which manifests itself in many ways) are all peri/menopause related… have you checked that out?? it does not matter if you still are regular, your hormones can start fluctuating and cause all kinds of symptoms… just consider it , unless you are male of course! Unfortunately alot of the anti-depressants can cause weight gain.
You can clench your teeth when your anxious, angry, or in pain. It might be a symptom of your anxiety or perhaps the dental work. A few hours after my sister`s accident I started clenching my teeth. It was causing pain in my temples and at times it was so bad I was close to tears. It seemed the more I focused on the clenching the worse it got. Believe it or not, chewing gum seemed to help me. What does your doctor say when you tell him you can`t eat anything harder than rice? I have small involuntary twitching in my arms and legs. It’s unnerving–I hate it. I fear parkinsons or something similar though, again, it started after I was on the Zoloft for a few months.
Twitching is a very common symptom of anxiety. I have had twitches in my arms and legs, the most annoying place to get a twitch is my eyelids. When I went on Paxil they stopped. Maybe your Zoloft dose is just not enough to relieve your anxiety. I think the only way to find out if it is anxiety or the Zoloft causing these symptoms is to get off of it and see what happens. Heightened anxiety all of a sudden. I was down to .75mgs daily and now am up to twice that–conciously I think for the teeth clenching–it seems to help a little–but also my entire disposition, mood, all over feel.
Has increasing the dose helped with the symptoms and the heightened anxiety? I have horrible nightmares every nightl. I can not even bring myself to tell you the content. When my anxiety is high for a extended period, I get terrible nightmares. I know what you are going through, I use to be afraid to go to sleep for fear of what I would dream. ((((((Little bear))))) I used to get canker sores as a child. NOT COLD SORES–they are so often confused with one another. Hmmm, did the jaw clenching start after you started getting canker sores? I would bet that your jaw clenching is related to the cankers, indirectly. You said yourself it is some of the worst pain you have endured You might be clenching due to the pain in your mouth. You should tell your doctor about these sores, he may be able to give you a ointment to help with the inflammation. Avoid citrus fruit, tomato`s and nuts. I also heard that many of the toothpaste we use can cause cankers in sensitive individuals. I realize that the Zoloft may not be to blame but I like to be informed when I see the doc.
Buspar is effective for generalized anxiety disorder, which is what I think you said you have. You don`t suffer from panic attacks, right? I don`t think it would hurt to try the Buspar.
really think for your best interest you should see a psych doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Most MD`s just don`t have the knowledge to treat anxiety disorders properly. Take care and good luck tomorrow. *Hugs* Jackie

OB, Thank you for this most edifying lesson in Latin. I guess my teachers had no time for breakk or never heard of jam. I now will start teachign Thcip Tchip Latin lessons and will eb able to do it as it shoudl be done: "Jam yesterday, Jam tomorrow, but no Jam today". After a few days he might attack me of course, as peanut buter alone is rather hard to swallow…. Would you happen to knwo how to say "peanut butter" in Latin, BTW? For lack of knowing how to say it, Tchip Tchip refers to it as "MMMM-mmmMMM!", where this comes from the fact that he can not open his beak when it is full of (jamless) peanut butter, thus happenign to make the sound "M", ever since. I am now trying to teach him words starting with "M" using an old Sesame Street tune that went: "You take an "M", That’s an "MMMMmmmm" and an "a,n" : "an". You put them all together and they spell "Man" That’s *Man*, "M,a,n" : "Man"! You take an "M", That’s a…HhhhhMMMMmmmmmmm And an "a,n": "an", You put them all together and they spell "Man". But so far, he just humms it, going M-mm-m-mmm, mm-mm-mm Mmm-m-m-mmm MMMMM Mmm-mm-mm-mm-m-m-m-m M, M, M! and so on…. Think I shoudl start with the Jam Latin Lesson first? "You take a "J", that’s a "dshz" and an "am": "am" You put them all together and they spell "yam"?? Would not the Yod of the latin "J" get him all confused…??? In that case the Latin for Peanut Butter might help solve this and offer him some better adapted option… Thanks, Chloe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text - OB (obl…@my-deja.com) writes:

Celexa?
Question:
Hello All, I’ve been bipolar for years and have anxiety that truly gets in the way. Well last Wed. I saw a therapist for the first time in many years and told her how I felt. Friday I get a call from her saying that my pdoc wants me to go on Celexa asap. I’m a little reluctant as I just got off Serzone a month or so ago. (I never thought I had any luck with A/D’s at all). Does anone take Celexa here? I found out its only been out since July/98. If so e-mail me your results, I would appreciate it. Ihave the bottle sitting here but not sure if I’m going to use it. Please Help!!! Thanks…Mike
Response:
Mike , On thursday when I see my Psychiatrist I am going to ask to try Celexa. I have worn out Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, Lithium ( not for me at all, made me a zombie) and Luvox. Would love to hear from anyone also , why they took it, how they felt. pcangel

I think it’s a great antidepressant, and I’ve taken a lot of them. Doesn’t make me drowsy, but doesn’t make me speedy either. I take 30 mg, too. Do you mean *Celexa?* In that case I would be interested to know why your doctor prescribes two SRI’s for you. Not that I think it’s wrong, just interested. Philip
Response:
Dolores, I’m so sorry for your loss. Thanksgiving was melancholy for me because my mom is in a nursing home after having a stroke 3 weeks ago. I know it’s not the same as losing someone to death, but she’s not the same person anymore so in that sense I’m grieving the loss of the beautiful mother I knew. Christmas won’t be much better I’m afraid. I’m on Paxil and I can highly recommend it, if you’re not bothered by the sexual side effects. I’m not married so it’s no big deal for me. I’m not sure if Zoloft is the same way. Anyway, Paxil got me through some very rough times over the past few weeks (with a little help from xanax) so I can recommend it from personal experience. If you go with Paxil, I would start ASAP because by the time the holidays hit it should have kicked in for you. Start slowly at about 10 mg. and increase after 10 days or so. All with your doctor’s guidance, of course. Best of luck and let us know how you’re doing. Sharon

Response:
I knew the holidays were going to be rough this year (widowed 4/98) and I also felt that the .5 mg of Klonopin wasn’t going to carry me though the next month. I was right. I’ve been weepy for the last two weeks, and the panic and anxiety are starting up again, which I have been free of since August! So you see, I need to do something. I’m so sick of this and wish I could propel myself into the future just to be normal again. Tomorrow I’m going to make an appt. to get my meds changed. I think I need the SSRI as my doc kept drilling into me, but Prozac didn’t work well for me. So what has been your experiences with Paxil or Zoloft? I have a friend who said Paxil gave him diahrea -don’t want that! Would a Zoloft/Klonopin mix work? Does that sound reasonable?
Maybe you only have to raise the Klonopin dose from .5 mgs to the average therapeutic dose which is around 3 mgs. If that doesn’t work after, say, two weeks, it might be a good idea to add an AD. Zoloft and Klonopin make a good combination if you’re not troubles by Zoloft side effects such as sexual dysfunction. Philip
Response:
Try the Paxil. You need to really give it a chance, though. It can take up to three weeks to notice any results. The thing with medications such as Paxil, people think they will feel ‘happy’, or their problems will go away. This is not true. It will put you in a mindset to deal with your problems like ‘normal’ people. Normal meaning: someone with regular amounts of serratonnin in their brain. Good luck. S
Response:

Dolores, I am so sorry for the death of your husband….. death is never easy to deal with when it comes to someone you love, but, the holidays can just stink, because of it. I lost my step mom (who truly *was* my mother, in the highest sense of the word) four years ago, this month. Then my sister, two years ago, this month, and last year, my grandmother. Novembers just BLOW, AFAIC. I think I know some of what you’re feeling, and I am feeling right along with you. Taking an antidepressant is a good starting place. When life is this tough, you sometimes need a biological correction to get you to a point where you can help yourself heal. (healthy diet, exercise, socializing, hobbies, etc.) It can really make the difference between being so stuck that you can’t find a way out, and feeling confident enough to work on taking care of yourself. There is also the phenomena associated with extended grief, which I am very familiar with — it can promote anxiety, panic attacks, clinical depression and obsessive thinking. Physically, it can prompt a first diagnosis of fibromyalgia in a person who is prone to it, and it can also compromise your immune system. Any of the a/d’s are probably as good as any others to start with, as there is no "blood test" they can do to target what biochemicals are unbalanced. You’ve already tried Prozac, so that probably isn’t an option, right now. There are many very effective ones out there, but, none of them are correct for everyone. Celexa seems to be the most promising as far as limited side effects. Maybe you could suggest that one to your doctor. He’s probably been bombarded with samples from the pharmaceutical rep, anyway.
I’ve tried about eight or ten different ones, over the last two years, and haven’t yet found the one that works best for me. All have seemed to have their complications, even though I start each trial with every hope that this time, I’ve got the *right* one. <G But, this seems to be a lot more to do with the other disorders and dysfunctions that I have than it has to do with effects on the Panic Disorder. You’ll have to try them until you find the one that suits you. Most people hit on the right one within just a few tries, I would bet. (Just from what I’ve read on ASAP and mailing lists. So, you should feel confident that there is help on the way. If you go with Paxil, you will need to start with "micro" doses – very small doses, to avoid triggering anxiety and some of the side effects (Which vary tremendously from person to person!) If you take Paxil for more than about two months (I think that’s right?) you will also have to discontinue it slowly. Zoloft is another good choice — it works wonders for many people. As do Serzone, Effexor, and some of the older tricyclics. AFAIK, all of the antidepressants can be used at the same time as the benzodiazepines, such as Klonopin. But, just a thought — Klonopin is known to induce depression in some anxiety patients, while xanax has an anti-depressant effect all by itself, in others. I am not sure that only .5mg/day of Klonopin would be enough to induce dysphoria or depression, but, if you are susceptible to that particular effect, it can’t be doing the depression much good. At the same time, I am not sure that only .5mg/day of Klonopin is enough to keep the anxiety under control, but, maybe someone else can jump in here. It might be trial and error, but, OTOH, it just might be "trial and win!" in your case. Very best of luck to you!! Elizabeth
