Question:

Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how.   Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico,

I doubt it’s an option to lower the costs to as low as they are in Mexico. If such a regulation were to be passed they’d just raise the price in Mexico to what’s being charged here and folks in Mexico would just have to do without. If you cut down the ability of a drug company to get return on investment too much you just won’t see any more investment and hence no more new drugs. Many drugs costs millions to develop and either never see the market or get pulled from the market within months due to newly discovered problems. If drug companies had it so easy everyone would own one. Don’t push too hard for the government to step in unless you want similar controls & interference with your industry too. — Don Elton Columbia, SC http://www.midcarolina.org

Response:

I assume all the "alternative" treatment proponents on USenet will be totally against this petition since they mostly claim that they would be happy to operate under the same regulations as pharmaceutical companies

Well, I’d be against it.  Over the years I’ve found some companies that make a point of standardising their products.  Last thing I want is another layer or six of bureaucrats leeching off of these companies and justifying their expensive lifestyles by promulgating more regulations that will end by jacking up the prices of these products.   There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly.  Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups.  Much like it’s done here.  I trust the posters here a lot farther than some bureaucrat whose boss accepts money from pharmaceutical companies. Over all I like the current set up.  It’s inexpensive, and unconnected with the horrendously expensive medical-industrial combine–so far.   Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation?  I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic.  I went to GNC to look at Chitosan for the heck of it and I believe the small bottle was $29.00 or $39.00.  I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive. In fact, I watched a documentary about death and dying.  Several people had turned to alternative products and were spending several hundred dollars *per month* on herbs and vitamins.  What a rip off… and by the way no one survived. Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive! Patrice

But to what standard?  A year or so ago a local newspaper sent ’standardized’ herbal extracts to a lab for testing.  They discovered that these ’standardized’ extracts contained anywhere from 20% to 140% of what the manufacturers claimed. Then how can you trust companies that have worked very hard to get themselves excluded from just about all sort of laws protecting the medical consumer?  A McDonalds hamburger is subject to stricter regulations relating to food safety, purity and content. And of course it is inexpensive, it is always cheaper to skip the safety testing.  So what if you are using your customers as guinea pigs? I suggest that you use the same scepticism you apply towards real medicine when you look at the alternative crowd.   Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation?  I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I just spent a couple of years under Kaiser HMO.  I was very satisfied with the care.  I found them to be very aggressive about preventative medicine and ensuring my asthma was under excellent control. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."    General Colin Powell

Response:

Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive!

Dosen’t mean that it is safe either.  Try to get somebody marketing ephedra products to give you an honest safety warning. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."    General Colin Powell

Response:

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic.  I went to GNC to look at Chitosan

So you have a co pay?  What is the ‘real’ cost of your meds?  Your employer and ultimately you and the people in your insurance pool bear the cost of those meds by your fees.  How much more would be in your paycheck if it weren’t for the high fees charged by the medical industry and it’s bureaucratic overseers? Just because the cost is taken out of your wages before you see it so you "won’t feel it" doesn’t mean you’re not paying through the nose. Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how.  Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico, our faithful legislators are fed re- election dollars by the pharm industries (can you smell the peanuts on their breath?)  so they can make billions charging higher prices for those on medicare, etc.  You and I pay for that, too.  And that’s taken out of your wages, too, before you can see it.   As a business owner, I can darn well see it. I don’t resent paying taxes and fica, but I sure do resent it when  big business pays off legislators to pass laws so they can suck up tax dollars that I have to pay. Rant.  Rave. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive.

Yeah.  It can be.  You have to do your research.  Don’t know what chitosan is, but  some companies do charge way more than their stuff is worth.  And there are always vultures looking to make money off the dying. On that, I have to repeat, do your research.  I have found certain companies that produce inxpensive but effective compounds that I have patronised over the years.  I have befriended both a western traditional herb store owner where I live, and a Chinese herb shop owner in NYC.  I have read dozens of books over the years, as well as many articles on the internet.  Some people don’t or can’t spend the time and effort to do this, and they will remain the prey of the con man or the medical industry.  The alternative is to take greater responsibility for our health, as we are all here doing. If you think alternative meds are expensive now, wait till the medical industry controls it. Obsess.  Compulse. Good luck

Go to an optromitist (sp?) you are tested for glaucoma as part of a routine eye exam. ‘Reply to’ address changed to foil email spammers.

No real discernible symptoms, at least early on. Must be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. I doubt that inhaled steroids alone will lead to this type of problem. — Mark Feblowitz,   GTE Laboratories Inc., 40 Sylvan Rd.  Waltham, MA 02254

prenisone will raise your blood pressure too, so I’m not surprised that it raised the pressure in your eyes, and I would see if you could get on an inhaled steroid like Flovent.

I looked up prednisone in my US Pharmacopeia. Quoting "Glaucoma–Corticosteroids may cause the pressure within the eye to increase." My advice is to switch from the low doseage oral prednisone (5mg/day) and Vanceril corticosteroid inhaler, to the new high strength inhaled corticosteroid Flovent, which will result in a much lower (factor of 10 or more) systemic (side) effect. The high strength corticosteroid inhaler approved in the US which has the lowest systemic effect is reputed to be Flovent (comes in 3 strengths, 44, 110 & 220 ug, you would probably use the Flovent 220). The point is get off the oral steroid. The older highstrenth Aerobid or new double strength Vanceril 84 would be an improvement, but Flovent would be the best. Another inhaler to consider is Serevent, a long acting bronchodilator. The 1997 Expert Panel Report recommends use of Serevent as a steroid sparing drug (use of Serevent reduces need for corticosteroid inhalers). A good reference for the latest asthma treatments is ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’ by Francis Adams, MD c96. Good luck,

My immediate plans are to add a 2-3" body lift, and larger wheels/tires, so I I might need the added power to keep the status quo. Thanks in advance. Dave

Hi I live in Las Vegas, Nv. I have to rotties that I love and adore, however my Landlord has given my husband and I an eviction notice unless we get rid of the dogs… I refuse to get rid of my dogs, but I don’t have anywhere to go just yet.. I need to know if there is anyone in Las Vegas or the near surroundings who would be able to take in 2 Rotts for a month at the very most… I don’t have a ton of money or I would put them in a kennel (it cost so much!), but I am willing to make monthly payments. I would buy the food and any other neccesities.. I would also come by to walk, play, and/or groom too. PLease if there’s anyone who can help me contact me at: -Heather

I don’t think you can. We’re moving four days after our wedding to Boston (3,000 miles), and we’re just going to ship stuff we get. All of the furniture we have is very bad, so we’re either selling it or giving it to Goodwill (if they’ll take them :-) ). We expect to get some cash gifts, though, but to offset shipping costs, we registered at Macy’s and Crate and Barrel, which are national, and just so happen to be wherever our guests are located (they are scattered all over the US). One option for them is to buy the gift, wait until we have found our new apartment, and send it to us there. It’s not *proper* to ask for cash instead of gifts. It looks as if you are greedy. Hopefully, your friends will make that logical decision to give you cash instead of gifts, but if they don’t, please don’t worry about it. You’ve got more things to worry about than how heavy your gifts will be. Laurel and Jack, 5/25/96

Sorry, there’s no nice way to tell people you want a gift at all, let alone that you want cash or a gift certificate.  You’re supposed to act surprised and delighted when you get a gift of any kind!  If you just can’t live with this, the only thing you might be able to do is whisper to a talkative friend that you’ll be needing lots of money for the move and hope she or he will spread the word. –Nancy Reynolds

Reflux question

Question:

My experience is that, despite the oft insurer referenced literature saying that post people can step down to H2 blockers, very few of my patients successfully make the transition.

I was put on Biaxin-Prisolic and Pepto Bismal for a thirty day treatment to cure my H-Pylori and reduce my acid reflux with success. I was and am still on 800mg daily of Tagamet daily which so far has kept me under control.

Response:

Can I ask a sort of follow up question? I have asthma and reflux problems treated by prilosec. The question I have is "What is the long term effects of taking prilosec for a long time ( at least a year with no end in sight)?"

When Prilosec first came out there was a concern that long term administration may lead to B12 deficiency and possibly gastric cancer. Fortunately, after 20 or so years of use this seems to not be the case. It appears to be safe for long term use. — CBI, MD

Treating H. pylori in duodenal and many peptic ulcers seems to be beneficial. It is questionable whether it is worthwhile in gastritis. The current thinking is that treating it makes reflux worse as often as better. The theory is that the chronic inflammation of the stomach may cause lower acid secretion, thus helping the reflux. Unfortunately, it also slightly increases the risk of gastric cancer. I’m glad you got better. I would guess that either the stomach inflammation was causing as much of your symptoms as the GERD, that the acid blockade alone helped the reflux, or that you are one of the lucky ones who’s reflux was actually helped and not worsened by eradicating the H. pylori. — CBI, MD

I’m wondering if it’s typical for others to only have to take Prilosec for three months No. There is some literature that the pharmacy plans love to quote when telling the docs to try to lower the intensity of acid suppression by switching to the cheaper H2 blockers like Zantac, Tagamet, or Pepcid after 8 weeks on a proton pump inhibitor (Prilosec). I have not heard anyone advocate just stopping the meds altogether. Even the insurers who pay for the meds do not suggest this. My experience is that, despite the oft insurer referenced literature saying that post people can step down to H2 blockers, very few of my patients successfully make the transition. or if stopping it is likely to cause me more problems with asthma than I have now. Yes. Should I get another opinion? You could either try it and go back and say "I told you so" if and when the symptoms worsen or you can get a second opinion. A third option would be to ask if you can just step down to a med like Zantac instead and then stop it if you continue to do well. I would be a little concerned that your new doc seems to be getting his continuing medical education from the drug rep and insurer literature and then getting it wrong at that.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was diagnosed with asthma about a year ago, though I’ve likely had it for several years at least.  After a couple of pretty severe asthma attacks, I was put on Albuterol inhaler and Flovent.  I did pretty well for a few months, but started having increased problems in the past three months with constant wheezing, especially at night, requiring almost daily night-time use of my rescue inhaler. During that time, I was diagnosed via upper endoscopy as having reflux. Apparently I’ve actually had it for a long time because there was a lot of scarring at the junction between the esophagus and stomach.  I was put on Prilosec which did not only help the epigastric pain I’d been having, but seemed to help the shortness of breath I’d been having at night (though it hasn’t made it completely go away either). Since we’ve recently moved, I had to get a new PCP.  Yesterday he told me that since I’d been taking Prilosec for three months, my reflux should be cured and there would be no need to continue taking it.  The doctor did, BTW, also add Singular to try to improve the control of my asthma. I’ve been using prilosec for about three years now.  This year my insurance company (a colorful one) informed me that they would only allow me three months of prilosec and a non-sedating antihistamine.  The prilosec worked wonderfully, even a late-night pizza caused no discomfort.  However, my reflux hasn’t been cured.  This last winter, being out of work for four weeks after foot surgery, I discovered that my reflux had disappeared, I even ate a late-night pizza to test it and had no problems.  About four days before going back to work the reflux reappeared!  My conclusion was that it was stress related.  I’m also taking singulair and I believe it has been helpful also.  Although I’ve been getting allergy shots for three years now and feel they have helped as well.  It’s hard to put my finger on the exact cause for the reduction of my asthma.  I’ve weaned myself down to two puffs of serevent at night, the singulair, allergy shots and only rarely a puff or two of albuterol.  I have been trying to wean myself off of the prilosec, taking it only every second or third night.  I notice a bit of reflux but can control that fairly well with only an antacid.

Question:

Thanks. I am curious does a psychiatrist have to prescribe?

No, GPs can do it too. But chances are they will know less about how to treat anxiety disorders than psychiatrists do. I only trust psychiatrists with a lot of experience in the treatment of anxiety disorders and an open mind (not *benzophobic*, for instance). Reason is my psychiatrist can be hard to get a hold of–ie he just have several offices he shares around town. Whereas my general practioner is always at his office day after day in case I need a dosage switch or whatever. Do general practiioner/internal medicine physcians have a enough info to reliably presribe SSRI’s?

Basically the main rule is *start low, go slow* to prevent initial worsening of symptoms. I think you should be able to reach your pdoc when necessary, maybe it will take some calls to find out where he is but it seems you *can* reach him. That would be better IMO.   Also I am very concerned SSRI’s will turn me into a robot–I have never taken any. I really dont want to get drowsy at work, etc.

Most of us are med phobic, it’s always difficult to start a (new) med. You will *not* turn into a robot though, I can assure you. Drowsiness on Zoloft is also not the first thing to expect but YMMV.   But I do want to get these racing anxiety oriented thoughts out of my head. Due to an injury I am nearly impotent at 36 yrs old so obviously those thoughts constantly race through my head—I want them to disappear.

I am very sorry to hear that. I do wonder if an SSRI like Zoloft will be the right med for you as SSRI’s very often cause sexual dysfunction including impotence as a side effect. Maybe a TCA like imipramine would be a more appropriate choice. Possibly even better would be a benzo like Xanax XR. It *is* obvious that you’d better talk to your psychiatrist about this. I find it strange that he prescribed Zoloft while knowing about your problems with impotence. I would certainly ask him about that. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – my psych has me starting out on zoloft at 50mg,,,after doing some reading should I ask him for 25mg starting dose? To make a long story short– The six months I was off the Zoloft was the darkest period of my life. I had all the classic symptoms of a junkie coming off of heroine. For three weeks straight, I had dry heaves, nausea, dizziness, panic attacks so severe I thought I was having a heart attack, cold sweats, a weird sound in my head, like breaking glass every time I’d blink my eyes, the disconnection of your brains ability to catch up with your vision when you look sharply to the left or right (almost like the old slide projectors that take a second and then click to the next picture), severe paranoia, and continual suicidal thoughts. If it were not for my husband taking time of from work to watch over me, I would not be here today! Unfortunately, I lost my job, and ended up having to get back on the Zoloft in order to live a so-called "normal life". And I can honestly say, it was like a miracle how quickly my nausea and dry heaves went away. I only wish that the first doctor I saw would have informed me about the possibility of becoming addicted to this drug, and given me the choice of alternative treatment or a life long commitment to Zoloft. Now the only symptoms I have are dry mouth and a stiff jaw…Oh, and paranoia about ever losing my health insurance. Virginia — Psychiatry is to Science as Astrology is to Astronomy

Well, in my experience, if you taper off of the drug, much the same as you slowly build up to a dose perscribed by your pdoc, you will experience less side effects.  The reason why it seems like you are addicted is because your nervous system has become dependant on the drug, and if you were to just stop it, you will experience severe side effects for several months afterwards, which happened to me a few years ago.  However, it’s not anywhere near as severe of an *addiction* as heroine or alcohol. Hey everyone. i was wondering if anyone had any side effects from zoloft?  I’ve been on zoloft for 6 weeks now and after 4 weeks I got terrible diareah and nausea and the wieredest thing is i missed my period.  Any other women have that sort of thing happen to them?  The only reason I’m asking is I’m trying to figure out if i might possibly be pregnant.  So let me know. Joanne

Response:

I take 150 mgs of zoloft daily and had/have absolutely no symptoms at all. It never affected my periods either.  Maybe you’d better get one of those little test kits? td "Joanne Johnson" <za…@worldnet.att.net

Joanne, Common adverse effects of Zoloft are as follows: Nausea Somnolence Diarrhea Insomnia Constipation Ejaculatory Dysfunction Dyspepsia Agitation Anorexia Impotence Weight gain Your missed period could be a coincidence. The other two symptoms are common side effects of Zoloft. Talk to your doctor if the symptoms are more than a minor inconvenience. I’ve never missed a period while being on it.  But at first, it made me really hyper.  After about 8-9 weeks, that stopped.  I didn’t have any other side effects from it, luckily. kat "Joanne Johnson" <za…@worldnet.att.net

I talk to my Dr and they say that its not from the zoloft.  I’m still testing negative on the home pregnancy tests.  I’ve got to go in and have blood work done to find out for sure.  I’ll let ya all know one way or the other what happens. Joanne

Response:

Hi Joanne, Taking Zoloft (Lustral over here in the UK) was an awful mistake for me. Within hours, I was experiencing a really clamping jaw tension – which my daft doctor stupidly claimed I had always had even though I had never had it before. My eyes went odd and starey, and felt pressured – this settled down after a few days but they were never right while I was on it. I had the awful nausea you mentioned, plus the upset stomach, headaches, and all sorts of other goodies. The nausea stayed after taking it, so did the bad stomach. Oh and I had tremors as well. Boy that stuff loved me. NOT. I suggest you keep an eye on it as it may be that it doesn’t agree with you. I wish I had come off sooner. Maybe have a chat about alternatives if it continues to be a problem. I found these side effects with all SSRI’s I tried (= Prozac and Seroxat). If you get muscle tension that you haven’t had before, like I did in my jaw, then I think that may be a real indication it is wrong for you. That said, you may decide that even this ‘wrong’ is more right for you than being without the benefits of the drug. Everyone is unique, chemically. I’m surprised by your doctor’s attitude about what were obviously some bad side effects. I was inpatient when the treating psychiatrist ordered clonazepam (Klonopin in the U.S.) to slow me down a little bit. I had that same clamping jaw tension and weirdness in my vision. It was diagnosed as a mild allergic reaction. I was immediately given diphenhydramine (Benadryl) by injection. A couple of hours of sleep and I was good to go. No more of that med for me. I now use a program for my Palm pilot called Epocrates. It’s like a portable PDR (Physician’s Desk Reference), which is the 4" thick, 6-8 lb. I KNOW what to expect before I take the med, and I can search through classes of meds for something with less annoying or fewer side effects. That way, I’m as well informed as my doctor. I’m surprised by your doctor’s attitude about what were obviously some bad

side

effects.

So was I and my whole family, but at that time I had only had PTSD for about 18 years and they hadn’t diagnosed it – I ended up researching the problem on the internet and finding out that I had PTSD, then having to convince them, then having an assessment which ended with the guy telling me he had been told to disprove that I had PTSD, but instead was appalled at how I had been treated and that, yes, I definitely had PTSD! How is that for an easy ride? NOT!

Well in hindsight I think I may have experienced something similar. I also wonder if it did long-term damage as my digestive system has never been the same since and I still have the awful clamping jaw that I never had before I took the stuff. I wonder if it altered something for the worse. Anyway, Kava Kava helps relax it if it is too bad. I did hear from an accident and emergency nurse though, and she said that she had encountered this muscular tension with SSRI usage, and that it was a sign that it really wasn’t agreeing with a person. Instead of keeping on taking it, they should come off it. Wish I had known that back then, or better still, that my doctor had! Never mind.

I think that is a really sensible and responsible approach. I do loads of research before I take anything significant. I have learned the hard way, but it pays to be in the know.

Risa, I am supposed to be taking Klonopin for Restless Leg Syndrome, and it helped a lot for that.  I am having problems with my legs now I’m off of it. I find the muscle problems with Zoloft interesting in that I have fibromyalgia (and I believe Chronic Myofasial Pain Disorder).  Add to that the osteoarthritis (was on Celebrex) and I have muscles and joints hurting literally everywhere.  I am also supposed to be on neurontin.  I’m to the point where I just want my anti-depressant, estrogen, klonopin, celebrex and the ambien.  I am ready to ditch the other four meds I was on, but I think I ended up with them to counteract the side effects of the original meds (swelling in the feet and hands and high blood pressure).  I can never tell which ailment is causing which "feeling!"  No wonder the doctors just throw up their hands.  :-/ *HUGS* Jacque ~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~ Jacque Keller www.tjkeller.net/jkeller/Jacque/ (personal) www.bramblerose.net (business)

Paxil withdrawal, and where to go next

Question:

Hi all. I’ve been on Paxil for 3.5 years, and, after considering it for a while, recently decided I needed to get off it and switch to something else. The difficulties I was having with the drug were starting to outweigh the benefits, and it hasn’t addressed several of my most distressing  depression symptoms at all. Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing some rather nasty withdrawal symptoms. At times I’ve felt like I am going through a rather severe depression relapse, and my already annoying problems with mental confusion and lack of concentration have multiplied. I now find it difficult to speak to anyone, since I often totally forget what I was talking about. Driving has even gotten difficult, since I sometimes blank out in the middle if a trip. I lose my temper if someone looks at me wrong, and I cry at the slightest provocation. My doc explained to me that I wasn’t losing it, or on my way back to the psych ward, but experiencing Paxil withdrawal. He put me on 20mg of Prozac, to help alleviate the symptoms, but they’re still effecting me badly. I was even forced to take a couple of weeks off from work. Anyone have any suggestions to help me get through this? Also, I’m still not sure where to go from here. My doc has said we’ll discuss options at my next visit, and I’ve done a lot of research on my own, but I’m still not sure what to do. Some of the options include, switching to Effexor, staying with the Prozac, or going to a different SSRI like Celexa. My main concerns are finding something that will help me think more clearly and concentrate better in addition to keeping up my desire to stay alive, and won’t cause me to gain any more weight. Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated. Joanne

Anybody use Valerian Root with Effexor or Welbutrin?

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have used valerian, esp. before I finally broke down, admitted I had a mood disorder, and was put on depakote, then lamictal (another mood stabilizer with fewer side effects — for me — than the depakote).  The valerian made me sleepy consistently, and I felt physically tired and mentally vague, which perhaps mitigated my mood disorder by making me too sleepy to notice how depressed I was.  It didn’t do anything when I was manic, however.  The mania was far stronger than the relatively mild effects of the valerian (I never took a high dose of it).  On the other hand, I’ve never tried it with effexor or wellbutrin, both of which I now take and both of which are fairly activating so I suppose they would offset the dullness factor.  I see no reason why you shouldn’t try it if your pdoc won’t give you a mood stabilizer and you feel you need one.  Why won’t your pdoc give you one?  or an anti-psychotic?  Does he/she not trust your reporting of symptoms that would indicate a need for them?  Maybe you just need a new, and hopefully better-informed, pdoc.  I’ve had five pdocs since beginning medication and not one of them has ever had any problems with prescribing anti-convulsants as mood stabilizers.  What about lithium?  No question that it’s a mood stabilizer, and nothing else.  Don’t overdose on the valerian, though. Start low and see how it goes.  But if I were in your place I’d find another pdoc. Let us know how it goes for you.  Luck. –Allegra

Thanks for the info Allegra… I was thinking of trying Valerian… since my pdoc thinks that i don’t need any kind of medicataion im kinda on my own… wanted to see if ti would help. Tried a veyr low dose for sleep, but it din’t have any effect – wonder if a much larger one would help… Don’t know about Jame’s pdoc, but mine says that there’s nothing biochemically wrong with me… so theres nothing for a pill to fix… how’s that? a pdoc who DOESN’T want to shove medication down your throat!!! last year I wouild have been thinking WOW, but now i’m not so sure… i mean, this guy saw me on Tuesday when i was about readuy to cut my wrists, and told me that my issues would deal with themselves gfiven time! — Kaji/Karenji – dragon/human Shifter depending on mood… *New Dragon Code COMING (one blue moon or another) *ICQ 55339701 – feel free to message me to chat :) *http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~gsj/Index.html *Wingsister to Viriatha, Tanith, Hespa and Caitlin/Amberynth *Lover of Chocolate, and Occasional Giver of Chocolate Points *Self-Appointed Guardian of the Southern Spring *Keeper of the Sunnydale Lost and Found

Response:

Hey folks: Well, since my pdoc won’t give me some good mood stabalizers or low dose antopsychotic, I am gonna try my 150mg Effexor XR, with a benzo, and Vallerian Root which I HOPE acts in SOME kind of mood stabalizing way. Ya, I know…far from being anything "medically" correct, but it’s much better than the previous cocktail of benzos and codiene I was taking. One thing I noticed with Effexor though is that it can really mess up your memory and alertness all day long. What I may try and do is beg, beg, beg my family doc to take on my psch meds for now, and ask to give a shot at another mood stabalizer or antipsychotic with Effexor or Welbutrin. My family doc was much more enthusiastic about using a mood stabalizer, he started me on depakote, than using benzos. The pdocs don’t seem to want to use ANYTHING not stricly "labled", as I see there is that whole controversy over using different meds for bp. (I guess even if the anticonvulsants are officially "labled" for use in bp, many pdocs still won’t use them.) Yes, there must be a bit of caution in mix and match pharmacy, but we are only here for a limited time, and I want to live as healthy, happy life like everybody does. I think even pdocs (some..not all) don’t realize how painful a mental disorder is. Yes, it’s "different" than physical pain, put the intensity is just as bad. James

Premature Ejaculation…Erectional Disfunction…

Question:

Hi Wes, by my babysitter as a child. I too have no problem with my sex drive or getting an erection. I just orgasm less than a minute into sex & lose the desire to continue. I want to continue but the drive is no longer

Your sex drive seems OK. Have you tried an anti-depressants like Zoloft (Sertraline)? They can delay the orgasm. — FBI, CIA, KGB, Interpol, MIB, MI6… choke on this pal! Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Response:

The best "lesson" I’ve never read. — Samy (France)

Response:

Everything which you posted was so true, I congratulate you ;-) Many years ago in a now outdated book called "Any Man Can" I learned that orgasm and ejaculation are NOT the same thing and that a guy can masturbate having multiple orgasms as long as he does not ejaculate. Just knowing that one can do this was a real shocker. The stop and start technique which you so very well described IS the way to multiple orgasms….and it works. For me it is not possible to do while having intercourse, because I really believe that "Mother Nature" intended us to ejaculate (as soon as possible) and reproduce. That IS what sex is really all about…..continued repopulation. I am interested in the ancient Celtics ad have read that groups of guys( cousins and brothers) stood around waiting their turn to have sex with the women…so any guy taking too long to "get it done" would most likely removed from the female. As an added interest since the "tribes" were brothers and cousins etc, any baby born would obviously look like every one else – fair skinned and lightish hair. This child would then be greatly accepted by the tribe regardless of its father. BOB

Response:

Fabulous answer, Fred . :::::::::standing ovation:::::::::::

Wes, First off, stop beating yourself up.  EVERY man, expecially young ones masturbate.  If someone tells you he doesn’t masturbate you can rest assured he’s lying (yes, even married men and old codgers like most of us on this newsgroup). From about 14, or whenever you reach puberty, through into the twenties, many masturbate daily or even several times a day. ALL MEN either fantasize about sexual situations or look at porno while they masturbate.   IT DOES NO HARM!  If you jack off too much, your body will make you slow down automatically because you’ll either get a sore dick or you just can’t get it up any more on that particular day.   What CAN happen is you can train yourself to come as quickly as possible while masturbating, either because you’re afraid of being caught doing it, you’re doing it when you don’t have much time, or you feel guilty about it.  When you start to have sex with a partner that quick-cum training can carry over and cause you to cum too quickly. As to not being able to get an erection again after you cum, that’s perfectly normal.  It’s called a "refactory period", and the amount of time before you can get an erection again varies greatly between individuals.  The older you get, the longer it takes before you can get another erection.  It’s very rare to find a man who can get an erection again right away after cumming, or avoid losing it at all. Supposedly some young teens can, but I believe that ability fades quickly. There are some things you can do to avoid this Premature Ejaculation (that’s the proper name for it). One is to masturbate before you expect to have sex (far enough ahead of time to get through the refactory period). You should be able to last longer on the second go-around after masturbating earlier.  Some recommend pulling out when you feel it coming, but before you reach the point of no return and having your _partner_ (not yourself) squeeze hard on the head of your penis.  Some recommend trying to think of something else during sex; preferably something you don’t particularly like, to take your mind off it (although this seems to me like it’d take a lot of the pleasure out of sex).  You can also be sure to wear a heavy duty condom and maybe get and use some desensitizing cream, (Prolong is one trade name)  You can get it at a pharmacy or a sex shop.  Be sure to put the cream on and then use a condom on top of it or you’ll desensitize your partner as well. The long term solution is to retrain yourself to lay back and enjoy sex for the great feelings of the slow buildup leading eventually to orgasm, without any sense of urgency.  You can do this with SLOW masturbation to EVENTUAL orgasm, which will have the added bonus of relieving some of the sexul tension and horniness which contribute to your cumming too quickly.   Extended mutual foreplay with your girlfriend, having her stop stimulation when you feel you’re near the edge, can also help. Concentrate on her feelings rather than your own, and try to get her to orgasm either orally, manually or both as many times as you can before you enter. A woman’s centers of sexual pleasure include the vagina only incidentally and she can get as much or more pleasure from stimulation of her clitoris, breasts and nipples, inner thighs, ears, neck, anus (stroke it lightly with a moistened finger or use your tongue), lips, buttocks, feet,  and any other areas she points out (Ask her.  Do the things she says she likes and avoid those she doesn’t.).  Don’t overlook the value of holding, hugging, kissing and just general caressing. To me, at least, there’s nothing that’s as much of a turnon as  giving my wife a series of screaming, out of control orgasms. There’s also a masturbation technique you could try to train yourself not to cum so quickly: First, you need to masturbate when you can take your time and really enjoy the sensations without the possibility of being disturbed.   Lay back on the bed, use some good lube like KY jelly or Astroglide and handle your penis very lightly all over with the fingertips of both hands just enough to maintain your erection. Keep a cup of warm water handy to remoisten the lube from time to time. If you feel yourself getting too close, stop for awhile until the sensation slacks off, then begin again. The idea is to make the good sensations last as long as possible without ejaculating.  Don’t use your fist, just the tips of your fingers lightly stroking the underside of the shaft, your balls, and  your inner thighs. Run a finger lightly from your anus up over your balls to the tip of your penis several times.  Relax and concentrate on the sensations and nothing else. You should be able to go on as long as you like this way, without ejaculating.  When you decide it’s time to cum, increase the tempo and pressure just enough to bring yourself slowly to orgasm. Don’t beat it frantically.. remember there’s no urgency. In the future, try to avoid masturbating when you’re hurried for any reason, or there’s a possiblilty you might be disturbed by someone intruding on your solitude. Use this technique as often as the opportunity presents itself, and you should find that you’ll learn a lot more self control, as well as enjoying sex more.  Using the extended foreplay techniques on your partner will make your sex last longer and give you both more satisfaction, even if you’re never able to lengthen the duration of actual intercourse. Good Luck!

Response:

I waz wondering if Yu had any progress with any of the suggestions in curing yur problem? & if so, what did Yu use to cure it? My name is Wes & I am only 19 years old. I too am experiencing some dysfunction of my erection. But I think I brought it on myself. I have had a difficult past where I constantly masturbated & was obsessed with poronography. I masturbated consistently for atleast more than 5 years average. I was molested, not sexually abused, but touched by my babysitter as a child. I too have no problem with my sex drive or getting an erection. I just orgasm less than a minute into sex & lose the desire to continue. I want to continue but the drive is no longer there. My X-girlfriend wants to help me by practicing with me & I tied but it just doesn’t work. I sometimes/most of the time, find myself getting aroused or having sexual thoughts the moment I get close to, hugging, or even sitting next to my girlfriend. I feel like my mind is perverted & my life is over. I try to exercise, I’ve thought about viagra but I didn’t think I could get a hold of it b/c of my young age. I figured it was for people up in age. I’ve thought about getting some type of surgery in the future when I came across enough money but I heard of certain cancers that can be acquired or side affects. There are so many different inventions that say they’re the best. I haven’t tried anything yet or seen a Therapist/Urologist/Whatever. I’m just investigating my options. I’ve now heard of: cock rings, penile injections, caverjet/ject, Paroxetine, Tri-mix, Stud 100, Sildenafil Citrate Loxanges, Yohimbine, & Herbal Viagra. I’m sorry to have written so much but Yu understand the seriousness of this subject. I’m in need of Help. juslt like Yu, I’m very interested in a sex life. I’m only 19. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I waz wondering if Yu had any progress with any of the suggestions in curing yur problem? You have no problems, young man!  You are just confused and you someone, perhaps a psychologist-sex-therapist to straighten you out.

Response:

You might take comfort in that fact that you’re not much different than thousand of others. I’m not sure what operation you were talking about. Circumcision? I’ve heard it said that the uncircumcised are very sensitive. There’s a lot of discussion going on about circumcision. Whether is mutilation or not. I would suggest you try some of those desensitizing chemicals. And yes, see a urologist. There’s no age limit to ED or PE. Works for me but I need 40 mg per day. Effexor was great at 300+ mg/day but I  had to take it every 4 hours. SJW was enough in the summer but I went back to  Prozac this fall – badddd crashing! Somedays you’re the pigeon, somedays you’re the statue. Lynn from North Dakota

[posted and emailed] Could I get a show of ppl. who have been rescued from depression successfully because of Prozac? Also I’d like to know how one decides if one can stop taking it? Many thanks.

i’m a partial success story.  i started paxil (AD in prozac class) when i was REALLY suicidal, and it saved my life many times. unfortunately, i was later diagnosed as bipolar type II (rapid cycling and/or hypomanic), and paxil makes me TOO manic occasionally.  so i have to change from paxil to another AD. but again, my life was saved several times with paxil. Gee, maybe a good slice of Ray Bari’s pizza with extra garlic before sex is all we need!

Wasn’t that a Barry Manilow song? Thanks for publishing the dirt on nonoxynol-9.  Sounds like its worse than even I thought.  And now the gay organizations are giving out condoms lubricated with "extra strength" nonoxynol 9. Ed

I knew you would get a kick out of that. Yes, I will grudgingly verify that you were the first person that I ever heard speak out against N9. Whey has a very high lysine to arginine ratio (2.75). I wonder if that is the reason why it works as an antiviral. Lysine has been shown to inhibit herpes viruses and may work against HIV. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS   WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1996     PAGE 8 FINDING A WHEY Could limit HIV spread by Joe Nicholson Daily News Staff Writer         Researchers yesterday said a substance made from whey, the liquid taken out of milk in making cheese, may have the power to stop the spread of the AIDS virus during intercourse.         Robert Neurath, a virologist at the New York Blood Center, held out the hope that the substance, dubbed B69, could be used as a foam or cream, like spermicides.         Neurath said he hit upon B69 after testing 68 other compounds with disappointing results: "It was a combination of persistence and luck, as is usual in life."         Neurath’s experiments, reported in February’s Nature Medicine journal, showed that B69 blocks HIV from entering CD4 cells, the immune cells the virus destroys.         Researchers cautioned, however, that B69 applications may not be a 100% preventive because it is uncertain whether B69 also would block other cell-entry sites.         "The compound could serve as the basis for preventive measures against HIV transmission…to supplement other barrier methods, like condoms," said the researchers.         Neurath said another big advantage of B69 was that a dose likely would cost only a few cents.         Neurath, whose laboratory work was funded with a $200,000 federal grant, said he was trying to raise at least $50,000 for animal testing.         Dr. John Adamson, president of the New York Blood Center, said B69 has the potential to save tens of thousands of lives. The treatment must first be tried on animals, and then, possibly a year from now, on humans.         The last big hope for stopping sexual spread of AIDS, Nonoxynol-9, was a disastrous failure, said Dr. Jeffrey Laurence of the American Foundation for AIDS Research.         Laurence, an AIDS researcher at Cornell Medical School as well as the foundation’s senior scientist for programs, said Nonoxynol-9 was tested in Africa several years ago.         "There were actually more infections in people who got the product," said Laurence. "It seemed to cause irritation in the vagina, and the hypothesis was that it eased the way for the AIDS virus."         Neurath said that unlike, Nonoxynol-9, B69 isn’t toxic to cells, so researchers "don’t expect…similar problems with this compound."         Neurath displayed a test tube of B69 liquid and said he was optimistic it would not cause negative reactions because it is a natural substance.          James M.
