Cost of meds… II
Question:
This is great. Would you please add Singulair 10 mg and Flovent 220 or 110? Thanks so much.

Greetings again
For some time now, I have spent various amounts of my online time searching the web for legitimate, reputable, online pharmacies, and checking their prices for various meds that I am on [almost all of which are asthma/allergy meds]. The differences in prices has been… fascinating… Especially when comparing what I pay at retail stores and what the prices are online… Knowing that this information is useful for me, I am assuming that it would be useful for others
And, even if you do have insurance, you may want to take a look at what the prices are like [if nothing else, it will make you appreciate the value and cost of your insurance
*When doing well* I spend $450 a month on meds, with no insurance, and I would gladly pay a few hundred a month to HAVE insurance...]. So… Within the next couple of days I will be posting a webpage of comparative drug prices. As of right now, I have prices on: Ventolin nebulizer solution Intal MDI Intal nebulizer solution Pulmicort turbuhaler Zyrtec [10 mg tablets] Serevent MDI Serevent Diskus And have used the following online pharmacies: PlanetRx DrugEmporium Drugstore.com <which is a Rite-Aid pharmacy] Eckerd.com If you have meds you would like included in the list, or online pharmacies to recommend… Please let me know [preferrably by email so that I don't miss it, but posting to the newsgroup is fine too; or do both
]. I will try to include as many as I can, though I do reserve the right to pick and choose which ones will be included. For now, I am limiting the page to asthma and allergy meds [which therefore does include antihistamines], and will also for now limit it to those meds that require an Rx in the USA… I may add other comparative info… and maybe a guestbook or something where people can post comments and such… But that shall come Later
Hopefully someone will find the info useful! SW.

More Singulair..
Question:
I know people have probably over posted about this, but.. is there anyone (besides me that is) who *hasn’t* had wonderful success with Singulair?? I’ve been on it for months now and I’ve hardly noticed a thing. I’m still taking my inhaler 3 and 4 times a day! Are the people who’re having lots of luck with it taking it in conjunction with other things? It’s *so* frustrating, since I still can hardly walk down the hall without having problems. Thanks for your help! Kelly
Maybe one of these days this info will get incorporated into the FAQ. Singulair and Accolate have a pattern of beneficial response where VERY APPROXIMATELY 1/3 of users expereince a strong, positve response; 1/3 of users get a mild benefit; and 1/3 of users derive NO BENEFIT at all. IT takes a month or two to distinguish between the second and third groups.
Response:
Hi Kelly, I have felt exactly the same about Singulair. I have been on it now for about 1 year but have not noticed any improvement with it at all. I am still on Prednisolone 20mg, Theophylline 300mg x2, Fluticasone 1000mcg x2, Serevent 50mcg and 100mcg, Atrovent 40mg x2 and Ventolin 200mg x4 everyday. Why is it that Sigulair seems to be the saviour for some, and a waste of time for others like us? Maybe some others out there will know the answer to that. Singulair is ususally prescribed for those with mild to moderate asthma. an expert on asthma but I’m surprised that your symptoms are so servere after a year of treatment! Has your doctor changed your meds during that time or suggested other forms of therapy?

Not a wonderful success but I would say *some* success. I was on flixotide, atrovent, ventolin, phyllocontin and needing prednisolone about every 3 months. After some difficulties and disruption at work I rapidly went downhill until I was at 6 days per month off work and needing prednisolone every few weeks. The doses I was on of the other things were about the maximum suggested (and about 30+ shots of ventolin per day). In April 1997 my parents went on holiday for a while and I "house sat" for them; playing computer games mainly. I got so involved in one of them I played for 36 hours straight; the only medication I took in that time was ventolin. I felt a lot better. I haven’t touched flixotide or atrovent since; medical advice was that I was looking for a very serious attack anytime soon if I didn’t go back on the medication. I held out. However the medication I *was* on appears to be the "standard" treatment for "brittle asthma" – i.e. very rapid onset (the stuff that may kill on the first attack with a new subject); I *don’t have* rapid onset asthma. The treatment I had had and had been receiving was a "hold over" from the prescription practices of a previous doctor – it had never been explained to me what it was all for and my current doctor had (as I had) assumed it was all o.k. Since I was still at about *two* days off work per month I saw my *new* doctor again; she suggested Singulair (‘cos we’d tried everything else). I’m now down to about 1 day per month on average from asthma related problems. So, I wouldn’t say it was *hugely* succesful; I would say it works reasonably well for me as I have a very slow declining sort of asthma problem and it stabilises my base levels. I’ve now been on Singulair over a year; my energy levels are much more than previously and I don’t have to worry about going out (I know I shall be able to physically cope until I can get back). I have had less ‘flu and bronchitic problems (possibly because I’m not on oral steroids all the time now) and I’m a lot happier with my state generally. It *wasn’t* a quick fix; it’s been very gradual in my case. change demonically challenged to demon in reply; hoping to avoid the spam Rex M F Smith

I’ve read Singulair has a sucess of 1/3 show dramatic improvement, 1/3 show significant improvement, 1/3 show no improvement. If you show no improvement, you should stop taking it. New studies show it starts to become effective within the 1st 24 hr, if it doesn’t help in 7 days, it probably won’t help. I started Singulair last spring. Initially I got a 10% improvement with peak flow and was happy with it. In the summer I had some exacerbations that dropped peak flows to 50%, and Singulair didn’t seem to help (tho it isn’t supposed to help in exacerbations) I did notice some side effects of tiredness, and was taking every other day. Lately I just stopped taking, may start up again. I use a peak flow meter to monitor lung function and a Action Plan to increase meds when peak flow drops into Yellow Zone. I’ve been using a new steroid inhaler, Pulmicort, since beginning of year. It’s so effective I don’t seem to need Singulair. If you need inhalers 3-4x/day, your asthma is not well controlled. Most asthmatics can control their asthma with inhaled steroids twice a day; and an occasional puff of albuterol less than once/day. (I also use Serevent twice a day) Ellis

I tried Accolate and Singulair for two months each. I could have been taking sugar pills, they had no effects whatsoever (but no side effects either). From the reports in the newsgroup about 1/3 of the people who try it get dramatic results, another 1/3 get mild results and the final 1/3 (us) get no results. Kelly, I showed almost immediate results from taking singulair! When you say inhaler, to what medicaiton are you refering. Is it a preventor medication like servent or a reliever med like proventil? You might require a preventor med to stop your asthma from getting out of hand. Are you taking any inhaled steriods such as azmacort or flovent? These are primary meds in preventing asthma since they help to prevent inflamation of the bronchial tubes. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I know people have probably over posted about this, but.. is there anyone (besides me that is) who *hasn’t* had wonderful success with Singulair?? new adjuncts to Prozac?
Question:
Have you tried effexor instead of prozac, although it’s a prescription drug? According to rxlist.com… "Preclinical studies have shown that venlafaxine [effexor] and its active metabolite, O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODV), are potent inhibitors of neuronal serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake and weak inhibitors of dopamine reuptake"
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve tried lots of antidepressants, and about the only one I can tolerate is Prozac. However, it’s not very effective. I’ve tried adding lithium and thyroxine, neither of which helped much. Lately there’s been talk here about noradrenergic and dopaminergic effects of antidepressants. Prozac only works on the serotonin receptors. Is there any other effective over the counter or other medications that would augment Prozac, that anyone can think of?

Thanks AMM and CyberMistress. Yes I tried Effexor – and may try it again – but it knocked me out too much for me to know what it was doing to my mood. I’ll try the 100mg of B6 and other B vitamins. Does anyone find that Omega-3 oil really helps with their mood?
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – John as you know I been suffering depression pretty bad since I stopped the Paxil and none of the AD’s I tried in the year and 4 months since did good things upon trying.. so I been going without. Well, I been trying the vitamin, minerals fish oils with mixed success…some alleviation of PMS symptoms but nothing for depression.. The thing is not enough alleviation of PMS so I was whining to a friend who told me his wife used 100mg of B6 to counteract PMS… What did I have to lose… I increased it to 100mg and I shown a positive response…out of the fog I been in the entire time since I stopped the Paxil…greyness gone… less irritable, though more BLACK and WHITE thinking cause I am more sure of myself. Anyway, if the Prozac works fairly well, why not supplement with the OMEGA 3 and b complex vitamins…see if they help… I’ve tried lots of antidepressants, and about the only one I can tolerate is Prozac. Question:
You seem to be missing my point. If you are as desparate as you keep saying I don’t understand why you don’t just go have the treatment. You say you are treatment resistant. Are you really, or are you just resistant to treatment? You can’t shove it down someone else’s throat while avoiding it yourself. I am not dismissing your situation. I really feel sorry for the shape you say you are in. What does bother me is that you sit here and dismiss everyone elses problems like they don’t matter. You can’t possibly know the situations that other people are in. How about 30 years of semi-living? How about attempted su*c*de and no one cared, didn’t even know? How about throwing friends out the window because you are too tired and depressed to give them the time of day? How about 30 years of excuses? Maybe it isn’t major to you, but it sure can be hell on the ones suffering, not to mention the families they created. I could go on and on, but I hope you can at least get the jest of what I am trying to say. Who knows, maybe there was some major depression thrown in along the way. All I know is that it is just as hard on us as yours is on you. You have to stop with all the assumptions, you don’t know.

Eric!! Arrgh. If you take a full bottle of extra-strength Tylenol and don’t go to the hospital for the next few days, the odds of Tylenol actually killing you are about 100%. Denise

Okay… since you want to press it… :-) I haven’t read Final Exit, but if it’s not in there, I imagine that’s because: 1) It’s a horrible way to die — very painful and slow, over a period of days or even a couple of weeks; 2) There is a good chance you’ll recover if someone finds you and gets you to the hospital within the first day for treatment (because there are chemical antidotes that can be administered); and 3) If you do survive, you might be left with permanent liver damage. So, I can see why someone writing a "how-to" book like Final Exit would not want to list Tylenol overdose as a recommended method. Still, people use it frequently. Some choose it because that’s what they have access to and they know it will work, and others because that’s what they have access to and they *don’t* realize it will work. It’s an especially big problem among teenagers — swallowing a bunch of Tylenol as a suicidal gesture, not realizing how lethal it can be. Also, because Tylenol is perceived to be safe, friends and family don’t always think to get it out of the home of somenoe who is suicidal. Some countries have even looked at limiting how many Tylenol can be bought at one time in order to curb its use in suicides. Anyway, just because you told me I’m full of crap (:-

Question:
Candy, It could be the Celexa. I am banking on the fact that it may be your routine being goofed up. Most SSRI’s have the possibility of anxiety as a side affect. You know I have had no problems, but thats just me. What dosage are you on? Chad Love is true when you can’t see eye to eye, but can still walk hand in hand.

:Hi I havent posted for a while but i have some questions. I have been on :the xanax for about 1 yr now for the second time around. I used to take
anax and zoloft but the zoloft didnt do anything for me really. now i :am on the xanax again and i am taking celexa. I feel like i am ready to :go back on zoloft. With the celexa i feel a little jittery and i have :been having alot of anxiety which i think is strange because i am taking :my xanax regularly. does celexa cause or make anxiety heighten?
All the antidepressants may increase anxiety initially. However, this usually stops when they "kick-in," but that may take 3-8 weeks. You can reduce this side effect by starting on a low dose, usually 1/4 the smallest dose tablet (in this case 5mg) and upping the dose by 1/4 tablet every 7-10 days. Those that are particularly sensitive may need to start on and ramp up by only 1/8th of a tablet. :i have :been on the celexa for 4 weeks now and im trying to give it time but i :am so tired of feeling certin ways because of a med or no med. i jsut :dont know why im feeling this way is it the celexa or is it just the :anxiety?
It may be a combination of both a chemical effect, and also a psychological one. A lot of us have pill phobia too. :why would i do this after taking my xanax though. i have never :had this problem before.
There are limits to how much anxiety any med, including the benzos, can control at any given dose. It seems that the Xanax dose you’re on isn’t sufficient to handle the increased anxiety Celexa is producing. Talk to your doctor about increasing Xanax for a few weeks. :i know m xanax use to last for about 8 hours :then it was about down to six and that is about all the time now but :since taking celexa about 4 hours after taking my xanax i feell lie im :going to have a panic attack.
Although it varies from person to person, Xanax is usually only effective for 4-5 hours. :i just dont understand. i have gone on 3rd :shift working now which has everything all screwed up anyway. my sleep :is screwed up and i am irritable.
All of which is probably contributing to the increased anxiety. :i hope none of this has to do with the :new med(celexa) my psychiatrist told me to give it some time.Any :suggestions or help, i really could use it right now. Thanks :
Only to hang in for a few more weeks. Antidepressants are generally very effective anxiety medications, but they do make matters worse initially. But when they begin working they make the pain and misery worthwhile. Its a bit like giving birth, but "labour" lasts much longer.
:Candy Harvey
Best wishes Ian

Hi Candy- I just switched from paxil to celexa. For the first month I had increased anxiety and the jitters. My pdoc said that if it didn’t subside I might need a higher dose, but she wanted to wait till I had been taking it eight weeks before any adjustments were made. Even with low dose xanax I was still anxious. The good news, is that at about five weeks the anxiety subsided and I am now doing better at six weeks into celexa than I did in ten months on paxil. If I were you I’d call the doc and try to hang in just a little bit longer. YMMV Take care, Jess – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hi I havent posted for a while but i have some questions. Hello: Hello Who?? You send me e mail and you dont even know my name? *Tip- People will usually buy something if you say their favorite word…that being, their name. Remember this. I retired a rich man due to my gift of salesmanship. If you received this post previously, I apologize for the intrusion.
Ok, here….you start out apologizing. Not good. You admit that there is an aspect of incompetence in your record keeping. You admit you dont even know who you have been contacting. I would rethink this also. *Tip- You MUST come up with a way to incorporate first names. I represent a Network Marketing company that just came out with a natural alternative to Prozac, L-5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan).
Ok, very nice and semi-impressive. Big Word, and an abbreviation combined with the number five. Is that the significant molecular combination….or just a cool marketing number. *Tip- I would recommend a double digit number. It sounds more potent. Possibly thirty-seven. Also, are you ashamed of the name of your company, or are planning an illegal activity and I am your target? L-5-HTP is a metabolite of tryptophan; a natural plant extract that raises serotonin levels in the brain without the harmful side effects of pharmaceutical antidepressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, etc.
I would never accept this statement without personal research. And also, natural extracts are indeed chemical elements, and can have just as significant a reaction to the body, or dangerous interaction with other medicines as prescription varieties. Once something "natural" is extracted, then it is no longer "natural". It relieves depression, anxiety/panic disorders, OCD, migraine headaches, insomnia, eating disorders, PMS, violent or aggressive tendencies, alcoholism, fibromyalgia, and more.
What about male pattern baldness, La Nina regional drought, irregular tire-tread wear, feline rebellion, bikini tan-lines, and poor cable reception? *Tip- the intelligent reader might find this somewhat exploitive by its probable exaggeration. The less intelligent reader would like to hear about genital enlargement properties. It is being used with great success by healthcare professionals
worldwide. Ok. Tip time again. *If you are going to make such a claim, then why didn’t you go ahead and list references? Such is standard practice by persons who are both professional and sincere. Maybe you are otherwise? If not, then name the "worldwide" healthcare professionals rushing to advocate it. If you would like me to mail you a brochure and more information, I would be happy to send it to you.
Scaaaary! You found me by e mail didn’t you? Then why not make the information available the same way. Could it be….that you would like to have my home address? Would you like to give me yours? How detestible is this? Uh…Very! Sincerely,
I’m not so sure about that right now. Linda Hoffman
I wouldnt mind an e mailed copy of the abstract.

cheap mental meds?
Question:
My doc wants me to take Zoloft and gave me a 3 week sample to start. (I haven’t tried them yet). I asked my pharmacist how much it would cost and he said 30 days of 50s would be well over $60.00. I don’t think so, I am on Medicare (a whole $578/mo) and pay for all my drugs. My husband works but I really want to be able to cover anything I need just in case he ever looses his job or something. I cannot take Elavil, I tried it once (psych dosage) and became a raving bitch and couldn’t make a rational judgement. My husband asked me after a week to quit taking the stuff, which I was glad to do as the side effects were awful. The depression I was going through at the time was nothing compared to how horrible I felt on the stuff. So, my PC’s assistant gave me the Zoloft to try. Is there anything similar that is cheaper? If I asked this before, please forgive me…. my Fibro is making me so forgetful lately that I’m not sure if I wanted to ask this or if I have already. Robin

I am one of many who do not have medical insurance to cover the costs of my treatment (herniated c6-c7 disk and rotator cuff injuries). A recent doctor switch finds me prescribed TRAZODONE (look it up on medicine.net) as an anti-depressant for chronic pain. I take the 50mg tablets, and the prescription was $10.99 at my nearest drug store (#30).
You’ll have to remember that drugstores vary widely in their prices for even the same prescription — don’t be afraid to shop around. And for my own question — what exactly are anti-depressants supposed to do for pain treatment? My doctor wasn’t awfully clear on this, but I’m willing to try almost anything at this point. It’s only been a few days, and I know that it can take several weeks for such medications to begin their work. j.
Response:
Beware of online drug stores….they are not always what they seem. Also, as for the anti-depressants. They are a God send for a lot of Chronic Pain sufferers! Pain is a cycle…more pain, more depression, more depression, more pain, round and round you can go. If the doctor has suggested a anti-depressant I would give it a try! There are several different kinds and if one doesn’t seem to help, try another. You will find one that works! But…they do have side effects..so read the print out carefully. Dry mouth is a big time one. Almost every one has that side effects. But the benefits out-weight the side effects. Dealing with Chronic pain is terrible. There is not a drug made that will take all the pain away! That is a point we all must learn to accept. But the proper pain meds and a good anti-depressant will help. We are all grieving…we grieve for the lost of our lives. The way we thought our lives would be if it wasn’t for the pain and disability. So, IMHO try it and give it at least six weeks!! That is important…It is a slow acting thing…one day you just wake up and although you may need your pain meds., you feel like the day is brighter…the fog starts to lift and the world gets lighter to carry! That is worth the cost…BTW if you do not have insurance or if you are on Medicare and have no coverage, there are some drug companies that will provide them, free…talk to your doctors. Hope you start feeling better soon! <VBH Joani – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am one of many who do not have medical insurance to cover the costs of my treatment (herniated c6-c7 disk and rotator cuff injuries). Response:
Jennifer, The use of depressants for chronic and cancer pain is not solely for the purpose of treating depression. The emotional response to chronic pain poorly managed is depression. While the antidepressants are useful for this problem, their primary function is to treat the pain associated with nerve dysfunction (neuropathic pain resulting from trauma, diabetes, chronic inflammation associated with degenerative disc disease, prolapsed disc with pressure on nerve roots, etc.). Increasing the level of serotonin in the brain not only improves mood, but may potentiate the effects of the bodies own pain relievers and may also have a direct pain relieving effect. Common Antidepressants include: Amitryptiline (Elavil), Amoxapine (Ascendin), Desipramine (Norpramin), Imipramine (Tofranil), Trazadone (Deseryl), Bupropion (Wellbutrin), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Nefazodone (Serzone), Paroxetine (Paxil), Sertraline (Zoloft) and Venlafaxine (Effexor), Luvox, Remeron. Oh, I’m afraid that I put in the wrong ‘net reference. It should have been medicinenet.com, which is an informational medical site. It has a good listing of prescription drugs, and I use it to check out the things I have been prescribed. It’s rather a good site – for example, it mentioned one potential (and I think serious!) side effect of TRAZODONE that my pharmacist did not — sexual dysfunctions. My drugstore is only a block away — I’d never order medications through the Internet! Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I’ve seen the common thread that when people see you on your good days, they naturally assume that every day is a good day — I share that frustration, and many others stated. It’s reassuring to find that my experiences are not isolated. jenn

question starting my 8th week of Zoloft
Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all. Overall Im doing better and better. My hyper self seems to be kicking back in and that is some of my problem. Here the main one. Tue will start my 8th week I think or is it my 7th. dont remember. I was weaning on soooooo slow that Im not even up to 50mg yet but heres the ?. Im up to 37mg and cutting the 50mg off at the end. Less and less so I am probably close to 43 now. The day before yesterday I did soooo much stuff. Yesterday I started feeling the tremors like I had 10 cups of coffee. Breathing is ok. Just really jittery and shaky. The emotional stuff is not as bad either. I also have had a headache in my temples…tension..Tue I am going to take the full 50mg Zoloft. I need to get back to work and at a theraputic dose. If this shakyness is from even my increase Tue I can handle it. I still have my Xanax. What do you all think…Like I said I have been doing alot better. The fear to stay around the house has vanished except for yesterday and today. I probably do need to rest. This normal stuff for even 7-8weeks. I guess I thought I would be pretty much back to normal…..but getting there. Thanks Brenda
Brenda, It sounds like great progress. As you say you’re doing a lot better. I think you can take 50 mgs now and go to work and be fine. Slowly things will become more *routine-like* and you won’t notice every small change in your body or at least not in an unpleasant way which keeps you *catastrophizing* over it. There will be good days and not so good days, we all have them, but you have Xanax for when you need it. Moreover, the Zoloft dose is still low. If this works that’s fantastic, if you have to decide somewhere along the road to take more it would be no problem at all. Enjoy your *new life*! Philip

Brenda – It’s a slow process…I am starting week 8 myself (which means you are too I believe
)…I noticed the shakes with each increase of Zoloft for a few days…this is probably what you are experiencing…The good part is that the shakes go away, but the feeling better doesn’t…Anyway, hang in there! We’ll both get there – I know it!!! I am still at the stage where the fear of having future attacks is a problem…Still need more time…At least my physiological symptoms are much better…Except for the last 2 days (see blood work 2 post) Best, — Charles Phipps

Went off Zoloft — big mistake???
Question:
First, you should never ever stop taking your meds "cold turkey" You must be weened off by your doc. I quit taking zoloft after I was in remission and then I started on a downward spiral. I’m back on thank God. I don’t know how long you took them , but it can take up to several months to feel an effect. Regardless, if it is not working, your doc can help you switch to something else. I had no side effects with Dothiepin except cotton-mouth. My friend was on mega-doses of Doxepin as well with no major side effects except for yours but he was able to counter it with a fibre supplement. The *tryptyline drugs are some of the older tricyclics, maybe a newer one would work without the problems. Still, getting a doctor to prescibe it can be an issue. I argued with mine about it but she seems sold on the SSRI’s. The point is moot now as I haven’t had anything for months. Regards, Trevor Ida Kern <clooney…@mindspring.com

They help, but I loved the Pamelor. Ida

Additionally, it is said that it takes 2-3 months on the SSRI’s to see OCD relief…I don’t know how long you’ve been on it, but it may pay to stay on if the side effects are not bad, as it is helping your depression now and could very well help your OCD later… — Charles Phipps cphi…@roadhog.com
Response:
Hi it doesn’t sound like a too good idea to me to AND quit the therapist AND the meds at the same time. I have no idea how long you’d been on the Zoloft but it takes long time for SSRI’s to be efficient on OCD symptoms, most people mention at least 10 weeks on the proper dosage… Also it might not be the proper SSRI, it took me three trials before actually finding something (Luvox) that seem to be working. I know how very difficult it all is. If you have OCD you should get in touch with the OCD Foundation (they have a Web site with all kind of infos on how to reach them etc…) and ask them for the adress of a trained CBT therapist near you. I don’t know what your symptms are but talk therapy doesn’t do much for OCD. I have been in talk therapy for over 2 years, even though it has given me some insight on some other problems, it didn’t help at all the OCD. Yes I think that it is very important to find a good therepist. Make sure they deal with ocd. Don’t give up because of one person I know there is someone who can help you. My husband talked me into starting back on the Zoloft today (after I *begged* him this morning not to go to work today
(( ). Just venting I guess — I know there’s nothing anyone can do.

Zoloft?
Question:
Hi All, I think I remember seeing this discussed before, but I don’t remember what was said, so please forgive the re-hashing. How are those who are using Zoloft taking it? IOW, are you taking 1 per day, or more frequently? And what doseages? Thanks! Cathy

Hi Cathy, I take 25 mgs as soon as I remember to after I wake up. Catherine, I take 150 mgs of Zoloft once a day. It is only supposed to be taken once per day according to all the info I could find. And I’ve done a lot of checking lately. (I accidently overdosed last week…kind of neat but I wouldn’t recommend it) I’ve been on Zoloft for almost 2 years. And for the longest time I was doing great. Right now I’ve either pooped out on the Zoloft or I’m having some hellacious problems cause it isn’t helping me any longer but it is still a good med for some. Good luck. Wow…that’s significantly more than the 25mg I’m taking, but then again I only started recently. It is only supposed to be taken once per day according to all the info I could find. And I’ve done a lot of checking lately.

Oh! I’m so sorry, Mary, that you are having such problems! Have you talked to your Dr. yet? Maybe he’ll let you try something else, or maybe increase the Zoloft? I wonder what maximum Zoloft dose is allowed. ((the other)) Cathy

Mary, I think Zoloft may still be a good med for you also!! I’ve been on Zoloft 150 mg/day for 6 years. When I experienced "poop out", instead of switching meds my psychiatrist added Cylert with good results for about 1 year. After that combo pooped out, he discontinued the Cylert and added desipramine 50 mg/day, which I am still on (in addition to Zoloft 150 mg/day). The process of adding a med to Zoloft (or any antidepressant) to make it start working again, or better, is called "augmentation". Too many docs just take you off a med that has been working previously and start you on another, and another, and another etc. Untill they find one that works. I do not know what symptoms you are experiencing when you say "poop out". What I experienced was the onset of depression. And I had good results by staying on Zoloft, but augmenting it with small doses of other meds. Chip Catherine, I take 150 mgs of Zoloft once a day. I take 200 mgs of Zoloft once in the a.m. Been doing this for 8 months with good results. Not spectacular, but *good*, and that’s good enough right now. My Pdoc says 200 mgs is the "max," although he admits to having some clients on 250. Melissa

Desi, if you search Deja news for references to Zoloft you will see a lot of discusion on it. Personally, I wouldn’t read it, however. If you are optimistic the best thing, IMO, is just to take it, follow your doctor’s instructions and see how you get on. We anxiety types can be very suggestible and it might be better not to predispose yourself to problems through other people’s opinions and experiences. Good luck! — Gary Cooper

It’s really very difficult to predict how any individual will respond to any specific medication for these disorders. As Gary commented, best just to try it and see how it goes. Keep in touch. Best Wishes, Arthur
