Depakote w/o Prescription

Question:

I live just outside of  Berkeley, CA.  I’m going to Italy in a couple of weeks and I’m going to check there. T. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone here have a source for Depakote without a prescription? The online pharmacies I found don’t carry it.  Between my son and myself, I spend $350.00 a month on that drug alone. Where do you live? My parents buy most of their prescriptions in Mexico. They are the identical drugs made by the same American and European companies, but the prices are *much* lower (10% to 25% of US prices). I think the price difference is because there is a much lower risk of litigation in Mexico. (Also, being a poorer country, the drug companies could never sell anything at US prices anyway). Ted — email: zzyzx69 <at usa <dot net Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Response:

Hi RachellleR: You can order prescription drugs from a few countries without a prescription. There are several in Thailand.  I just don’t know which ones are dependable. You’re allowed to order a 3-month supply at one time.  I deal with an online pharmacy in Australia where I get Xenical without a prescription and it’s 2/3 the price of the US pharmacies.  I’m just looking for one that carries Depakote. Supposedly, according to my pharmacist, valproic acid isn’t really the same as depakote because of the way it’s released or something like that.  I don’t know.  I just know it’s expensive as all hell. T. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone here have a source for Depakote without a prescription? Depakote is strictly a prescription drug and cannot be acquired legally without a scrip. To get a better price, you may be able to get an 800 number for the manufacturer and checkto see whether they have a program, as some drug companies do, that help people make the cost of their prescriptions. Also, doesn’t Depakote have a generic you could try?

DepaKENE (valproic acid), yes: DepaKOTE (sodium valproate), no. Depakene is substitutable for Depakote but it is even more likely to cause GI upset than Depakote.

Response:

Also, doesn’t Depakote have a generic you could try? I took valproac acid (Depakote without the name tag <g), and it was cheaper than "Depakote".

Valproic acid is Depakene. Sodium divalproex is Depakote. They both have the valproate ion (the stuff that does the work) in them but Depakote is not as hard on the GI tract. If you have a cast-iron stomach, generic valproic acid will work just fine. Depakene has a generic, but Depakote will not have generic competition until the year 2008. Maybe it’s time to buy Abbott stock. <grin

Help! trembling limbs.

Question:

Let me just take a wild guess here and assume u took an ssri. I’ve been on and off mine for years, off now for at least a year, and I get the shakes in the morning for no reason. I now believe what it took exacerbated my anxiety but so did other things. You could cut out all caffeine, tobacco, get more exercise, practice deep breathing, go to cognitive behavioral therapy, but most important at all, i think, is not to obsess about it. just enjoy it until it goes away- it’s nothing to worry about.

Thanks a lot! I have been heading towards the same conclusion myself! More than the trembling, it is the _anticipation_ of the trembling that exacerbates it.Thank you for your comments.

Response:

Hello there,   I have had bouts of mild depression ,but i had taken medication and am now not on medicines. But, I have occasional bouts of trembling hands or legs and excessive sweating. This happens (not surprisingly) when there are other people arpund. When I take a spoon of sugar to put it into someones cup, my hands shake visibly. When I get onstage to speak , my legs shake like there is some spring inside them (I have never had shaky legs while going onstage until about a year ago -even though I did have stage fear). And, when I talk to people I suddenly start sweating profusely and sometimes my speach slurs (I then feel like words are crashing throgh my mind and my mouth ain’t fast enough to speak my thoughts).Once or twice , I’ve woken up with a start due to marked twiching of some part of my body which disappears as soon as I get up.This is a source of real social embarrassment for me. What’s worse is that when I start trembling or sweating, I also get anxious that I am t. or s. and this acts like some feedback mechanism and _increases_ the t. and s.   I am 18 years old and am otherwise healthy. I do not want to take medicine for this. Can anyone tell me a way out of this which involves only exercise and proper diet? And yes, my sleep cycles are awry and I have a sizeable sleep debt.

Response:

Depending on what medication you were on it may still be some lingering side effect. I am not a doctor but I have heard of this happening sometimes. It sounds to me that you may have symptoms of some anxiety disorder. I would go to the docotor and get checked to rule out anything else. I sure you hate to take meds however we all do but you gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes. Hopefully some type of exercise will work for you. Take care. Paul

Response:

Wow, another young one!  I’m 18 as well, as of October 3rd. Anyway, I am on Zoloft, Xanax, and BuSpar, and the first week or so my speech slurred as well, not much, but it was noticeable.  My mom said it sounded like I was drunk.  So, as BlueFin said, it could still be a side-effect, depending on when you stopped the meds.  About the trembling, if it’s violent shaking you should talk to your doctor.  My arms and legs, especially my hands, tremble sometimes and shake when they are not supported and I am really anxious.  My psychologist said that this happened because an anxious person’s heart is pumping blood so fast that it takes it away from the limbs and they start to get tingly and shake.  Since you can still get up on stage, I say you’re doing great!  I couldn’t imagine doing something like that right now. Hope this helped,     Robin Michelle – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello there,   I have had bouts of mild depression ,but i had taken medication and am now not on medicines. Make It Stop

Question:

I am currently taking Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Neurontin and Dalmane.  I lost my father to terminal lung cancer in March 2000, my husband of 20 years left me 4 months later for someone he’d been having an affair with for quite some time which I was unaware of. We are now divorced ( I initiated it) and he will no longer speak to me as per his significant other. I am in therapy, but feel as though I have reached the end of my rope. There are no friends to call any more, not that there were in the beginning. No one likes bad news apparently it is contagious. What can I do to keep going with feeling lilke I’m going to "Hemingway" every morning. Thanks for any response. M

Response:

I know, people think that misfortune is like a disease. Everyone was all over me while I was pregnant, and nobody wants to come near me since my son has died, except the ones who really matter. It hurts though. Some people are ignorant assholes. That is really horrible shit to go through. Do anything for yourself that makes you feel better, the meds, talk therapy, a whole tub of chocolate icecream… You deserve it. Your husband’s actions would make a lot of people feel worthless, but I hope you know you’re not, now, and taking the initiative in leaving him was a step in the right direction, in building a new life for yourself where _you_ are important. The same thing happened to my best friend’s mother, she also lost her father to cancer and her husband cheated on her and is now living with the other woman. She did go through a really depressed period where she was hospitalised and tried to take her life, but now she’s studying fine art and is a much happier and more successful person than she ever was with her husband. It does happen, but give yourself time, and love. What doesn’t kill you will eventually make you stronger, so for now I too am just concentrating on staying alive. Amy

Hi M I’m taking 40mg Prozac and two hundred mg Welbutrin now for the past 30 days or so.  I think that I’m feeling better, but that just may be the Glenn Livet. Premature Ejaculation…Erectional Disfunction…

Question:

Hi Wes, by my babysitter as a child. I too have no problem with my sex drive or getting an erection. I just orgasm less than a minute into sex & lose the desire to continue. I want to continue but the drive is no longer

Your sex drive seems OK. Have you tried an anti-depressants like Zoloft (Sertraline)? They can delay the orgasm. — FBI, CIA, KGB, Interpol, MIB, MI6… choke on this pal! Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

The best "lesson" I’ve never read. — Samy (France)

Response:

Everything which you posted was so true, I congratulate you ;-) Many years ago in a now outdated book called "Any Man Can" I learned that orgasm and ejaculation are NOT the same thing and that a guy can masturbate having multiple orgasms as long as he does not ejaculate. Just knowing that one can do this was a real shocker. The stop and start technique which you so very well described IS the way to multiple orgasms….and it works. For me it is not possible to do while having intercourse, because I really believe that "Mother Nature" intended us to ejaculate (as soon as possible) and reproduce. That IS what sex is really all about…..continued repopulation. I am interested in the ancient Celtics ad have read that groups of guys( cousins and brothers) stood around waiting their turn to have sex with the women…so any guy taking too long to "get it done" would most likely removed from the female. As an added interest since the "tribes" were brothers and cousins etc, any baby born would obviously look like every one else – fair skinned and lightish hair. This child would then be greatly accepted by the tribe regardless of its father. BOB

Response:

Fabulous answer, Fred . :::::::::standing ovation:::::::::::

Wes, First off, stop beating yourself up.  EVERY man, expecially young ones masturbate.  If someone tells you he doesn’t masturbate you can rest assured he’s lying (yes, even married men and old codgers like most of us on this newsgroup). From about 14, or whenever you reach puberty, through into the twenties, many masturbate daily or even several times a day. ALL MEN either fantasize about sexual situations or look at porno while they masturbate.   IT DOES NO HARM!  If you jack off too much, your body will make you slow down automatically because you’ll either get a sore dick or you just can’t get it up any more on that particular day.   What CAN happen is you can train yourself to come as quickly as possible while masturbating, either because you’re afraid of being caught doing it, you’re doing it when you don’t have much time, or you feel guilty about it.  When you start to have sex with a partner that quick-cum training can carry over and cause you to cum too quickly. As to not being able to get an erection again after you cum, that’s perfectly normal.  It’s called a "refactory period", and the amount of time before you can get an erection again varies greatly between individuals.  The older you get, the longer it takes before you can get another erection.  It’s very rare to find a man who can get an erection again right away after cumming, or avoid losing it at all. Supposedly some young teens can, but I believe that ability fades quickly. There are some things you can do to avoid this Premature Ejaculation (that’s the proper name for it). One is to masturbate before you expect to have sex (far enough ahead of time to get through the refactory period). You should be able to last longer on the second go-around after masturbating earlier.  Some recommend pulling out when you feel it coming, but before you reach the point of no return and having your _partner_ (not yourself) squeeze hard on the head of your penis.  Some recommend trying to think of something else during sex; preferably something you don’t particularly like, to take your mind off it (although this seems to me like it’d take a lot of the pleasure out of sex).  You can also be sure to wear a heavy duty condom and maybe get and use some desensitizing cream, (Prolong is one trade name)  You can get it at a pharmacy or a sex shop.  Be sure to put the cream on and then use a condom on top of it or you’ll desensitize your partner as well. The long term solution is to retrain yourself to lay back and enjoy sex for the great feelings of the slow buildup leading eventually to orgasm, without any sense of urgency.  You can do this with SLOW masturbation to EVENTUAL orgasm, which will have the added bonus of relieving some of the sexul tension and horniness which contribute to your cumming too quickly.   Extended mutual foreplay with your girlfriend, having her stop stimulation when you feel you’re near the edge, can also help. Concentrate on her feelings rather than your own, and try to get her to orgasm either orally, manually or both as many times as you can before you enter. A woman’s centers of sexual pleasure include the vagina only incidentally and she can get as much or more pleasure from stimulation of her clitoris, breasts and nipples, inner thighs, ears, neck, anus (stroke it lightly with a moistened finger or use your tongue), lips, buttocks, feet,  and any other areas she points out (Ask her.  Do the things she says she likes and avoid those she doesn’t.).  Don’t overlook the value of holding, hugging, kissing and just general caressing. To me, at least, there’s nothing that’s as much of a turnon as  giving my wife a series of screaming, out of control orgasms. There’s also a masturbation technique you could try to train yourself not to cum so quickly: First, you need to masturbate when you can take your time and really enjoy the sensations without the possibility of being disturbed.   Lay back on the bed, use some good lube like KY jelly or Astroglide and handle your penis very lightly all over with the fingertips of both hands just enough to maintain your erection. Keep a cup of warm water handy to remoisten the lube from time to time. If you feel yourself getting too close, stop for awhile until the sensation slacks off, then begin again. The idea is to make the good sensations last as long as possible without ejaculating.  Don’t use your fist, just the tips of your fingers lightly stroking the underside of the shaft, your balls, and  your inner thighs. Run a finger lightly from your anus up over your balls to the tip of your penis several times.  Relax and concentrate on the sensations and nothing else. You should be able to go on as long as you like this way, without ejaculating.  When you decide it’s time to cum, increase the tempo and pressure just enough to bring yourself slowly to orgasm. Don’t beat it frantically.. remember there’s no urgency. In the future, try to avoid masturbating when you’re hurried for any reason, or there’s a possiblilty you might be disturbed by someone intruding on your solitude. Use this technique as often as the opportunity presents itself, and you should find that you’ll learn a lot more self control, as well as enjoying sex more.  Using the extended foreplay techniques on your partner will make your sex last longer and give you both more satisfaction, even if you’re never able to lengthen the duration of actual intercourse. Good Luck!

I waz wondering if Yu had any progress with any of the suggestions in curing yur problem? & if so, what did Yu use to cure it? My name is Wes & I am only 19 years old. I too am experiencing some dysfunction of my erection. But I think I brought it on myself. I have had a difficult past where I constantly masturbated & was obsessed with poronography. I masturbated consistently for atleast more than 5 years average. I was molested, not sexually abused, but touched by my babysitter as a child. I too have no problem with my sex drive or getting an erection. I just orgasm less than a minute into sex & lose the desire to continue. I want to continue but the drive is no longer there. My X-girlfriend wants to help me by practicing with me & I tied but it just doesn’t work. I sometimes/most of the time, find myself getting aroused or having sexual thoughts the moment I get close to, hugging, or even sitting next to my girlfriend. I feel like my mind is perverted & my life is over. I try to exercise, I’ve thought about viagra but I didn’t think I could get a hold of it b/c of my young age. I figured it was for people up in age. I’ve thought about getting some type of surgery in the future when I came across enough money but I heard of certain cancers that can be acquired or side affects. There are so many different inventions that say they’re the best. I haven’t tried anything yet or seen a Therapist/Urologist/Whatever. I’m just investigating my options. I’ve now heard of: cock rings, penile injections, caverjet/ject, Paroxetine, Tri-mix, Stud 100, Sildenafil Citrate Loxanges, Yohimbine, & Herbal Viagra. I would suggest you try some of those desensitizing chemicals. And yes, see a urologist. There’s no age limit to ED or PE. Zoloft side effects???

Question:

Hi Everyone- I am new to this newsgroup but not new to the disease of anxiety. My doctor has switched me from Paxil to Zoloft. She weaned me off Paxil and slowly on to Zoloft 50 mg. My problem is the horrible side effects..I know they are to be expected but these are quite bad. I find I cannot eat anything, I am more anxious, I have vivid flashbacks, I cannot sleep and if I do get any sleep I have horrible nightmares! I also have light sensitivity, major headaches and my eyes feel like they are going to pop out of their sockets!! I cannot focus on many tasks at all. Using the PC has become very hard to look at!! Can anyone tell me if this is normal or if they have experienced this? Thanks in advance :) —Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.—

I have been on meds for about three weeks, first Celexa and now Zoloft.  I have noticed that I have very wierd dreams, not necessarily nightmares, but very bizarre ones.  I am also taking Ambien for sleep and I thought that was causing the dreams. I had tremendous brain fog on Zoloft.   Everything seemed surreal.  Zoloft decreased my need for benzos, but I was tired all the time.  I really don’t remember all the side effects.  I just know that it didn’t work out for me. I just got off of Zoloft, but when I went on I was started at 12 1/2mg. and not 50 mg. to start.  That could be your problem.  You need to start slower then 50 mg.  You will probably still have a few side effects, but not like you are having.  Call your doctor and tell him or her.  Good Luck

I had an awful time with Zoloft..nightmares, headaches, anxiety beyond the expected time, finally went off it after 8 months or so. If it doesn’t clear up within some weeks, think about changing meds..but you might also try a small amount of a  benzo with it to adjust..it didn’t work for me but I hear that it does all the time for other people. It is always hard to say whether its the wrong med for you or if it’s an adjustment when you are first starting these meds..I personally had an awful time getting past the first weeks I took pamelor years ago, and yet once I did it was the best AD for me with the least  side effects. Good luck May

Response:

I had those side  effects with Paxil. I am currently taking zoloft and it’s working wonders. I find that the ssri’s work differently on different people. Maybe your dcotor will change you back to paxil of put you on prozac. You needent suffer like that.   Dave

Response:

Hi, I too had a terrible time with Zoloft. I had horrible dreams and would wake up screaming. I talked in my sleep and could nod off in the middle of a conversation! My depression worsened as did anxiety and panic. I also felt like I was dreaming even when I was awake–disassociation I think its called. Things didn’t seem real. A lot of people on this NG seem to have very positive results from Zoloft. It goes to show how different we all are in the ways we react to meds. I’m on 40 mgs. of Prozac now and have been for almost 4 years. It works well for me. I’m sorry you’re having trouble. Maybe its time to call the doctor and let her/him know how you feel. There is bound to be a med out there that will work for you. Maybe Zoloft just isn’t it. Don’t go on feeling like this though. I waited until my next doctor appointment and kept taking the Zoloft. I was sure it would start to work and that it was my fault that it wasn’t. Now I know better! Hope this helps! Best wishes,   Linda

Yes, I have experienced this (and could add some more lovely symptoms) and I guess many of us have. Did you have the same experiences while starting Paxil? Why did you stop Paxil? How *slow* did you wean on Zoloft? It seems advisable to have a benzo on the side. These may be initial Zoloft side effects but if you started at a low dose (12,5 mgs) and weaned on slowly it shouldn’t be so bad IMO. It is possible that Zoloft is not the med for you. I started on Zoloft May 3rd and I have not had any side effects at all, not noticabe ones, the only noticable one I have had is I can not have an orgasm..I do not plan to stay on this med for this reason..I was started on Zoloft to control my anger..does anyone know of another AD that is not an SSRI and helps with anger? I am on 50mg every day. Hope…That This Too Shall Pass..

Things going well w/out Depakote.

Question:

I’ve been off the stuff for about 3 days now..can’t really say I feel that bad…I actually feel BETTER….my body feel so much less sluggish and I want to DO stuff and I don’t feel uneven or unstable by any stretch of the imagination. I just feel good because this is actually turhing out to be an "up" week for me.  Maybe I don’t need the meds…  I dunno….things are on an upward curve for me at eh moment.  I feel great….great great great…..not upity, but just plain old great. i think.

dear spacegurl, i’ve done what you’ve done so many times…hell, i’m not on any mood stabilizers right now (shhh!) actually, i’m going to my doctor to trade my (rash-inducing…but that was just me…) tegretol for what i’m guessing will be neurontin, since i’ve tried most others. my summary of life without meds: short term, i felt fine. long term, i never have really gotten better. i haven’t had any unusual catastrophes, but i’ve just never been able to really "heal." my mood/neuro-issues still interfere with my life. it’s cyclical, so somtimes i think i’ll be fine without… in fact, i stayed off meds for seven years. but i am coming back to try again. i haven’t been able to produce much artwork (except for my website) or hold a job for long, i feel alternately sad and without energy or frightened/agitated, and my boyfriend and i are increasingly socially isolated due to my having a panic attack half of the times we try to go out. note: i also haven’t been able to stick to an exercise schedule of any kind when depressed! this seems pathetic to me, as i used to take ballet, race bikes, etc. so i am urging you to try different meds instead- and on your terms. my first time on lithium, i gained a ton of weight and consequently felt so betrayed by my doctors, who didn’t even warn me…and i’ve also tried depakote. neither worked for me anyway… I do’nt see how any meds that make you gain weight can make you happy.  At least not for me.

i really do agree. as i’ve said before (on this newsgroup,) every med i try is a gamble- it may help, it may not. whereas i *k*n*o*w* that the more weight i gain, the more depressed i’ll get. it’s just common sense to be unwilling to take a drug that makes me depressed via weight gain when i’m taking it to alleviate depression in the first place! call it vanity if you wish, but that’s my philosophy. I know, I need to change my views on this, but hey…I am doing what I need to do.

i know- believe me. but before you leave the mystical world of psychopharmacology, i really wanted to show you this: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Ask the Expert – Mood Disorder Meds Weigh In Q. What mood disorder medications are most likely/least likely to cause weight gain? Information on both bipolar and unipolar drug therapy would be appreciated. A. The following is a basic summary of the effects of various mood medications, and their usual effect on weight: Key +++ weight gain very likely, often exceeding 8 lbs ++ weight gain sometimes seen, usually modest (5-6 lbs) + weight gain uncommon (less than 5% of patients) and usually less than 5 lbs. Antidepressants Fluoxetine (Prozac), Sertraline (Zoloft), Paroxetine (Paxil) + Bupropion (Wellbutrin) + Venlafaxine (Effexor) + Tricyclics Elavil, Tofranil, Doxepin and others +++ Mood stabilizers Lithium +++ (average weight gain=9 lbs) Valproate (Depakote) ++ Carbamazepine (Tegretol) + Note: Some elderly patients actually lose weight while taking Prozac. These figures are based on the literature, and my own experience. Patients vary greatly in their responses, however, and there are always patients who gain weight when they weren’t supposed to on a given agent.

i’m admittedly not sure where i got this.. it was a well-established website that i found easily by entering "weight" and "bipolar" into a search engine. spacegurl, i just want to let you know that not all drugs cause fattening. some even encourage loss (wellbutrin has been known to cause a loss of over 5 pounds in about 25% of the people who take it, for example. i wouldn’t really recommend  it as the most effective drug out there, but your results may differ.) i haven’t seen most of your posts leading up to this, but if you’re really quitting meds over the weight issue alone, you still have a range of options you could try (tegretol, neurontin…) love and luck, selene

I took Betaseron for a year and a half.  The flu-like symptoms went away  (fortunate, since I got chills so bad I had to buy a Polarfleece outfit to  sleep in under 2 blankets and 2 quilts).  But the depression, which began only  on injection days, got worse and  never went away.  Only an MRI would show  whether the Beta was doing its job.  I assume it was, but that wouldn’t do me  any good if I killed myself.  I tried Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor–had a variety  of unpleasant side effects.  I know depression can be an MS symptom, but this  did seem drug related, so I finally decided I’d rather live with the MS, quit  the Beta.  Took a year to pull out of scary depression.  I’m doing pretty well  now.    I gather that Betaseron does work for some (many?) people but I’ve felt that  it’s potential for depression has been understated.

Response:

Hi Sue! I have been on Betaseron for over 2 years now.  I didn’t take any prednisone  when I started it, but I do take it when my symptoms get worse.  Yeah, that  stuff is no fun at all! I have not had the "flu-like" symptoms since the first month I was on  Betaseron. My injection site problems have been minimal.  I rub aloe vera cream with  vitamins A, D, and E on my legs and stomach.  For the past 2 months, I have  convinced my boyfriend to help me inject my "hip" area–some word they came up  with for butt!  I am giving my other spots a rest this way.  The redness is  going away, and I hope my skin will be a little more receptive to the  injections. I have had what I call "mini-attacks" since I have been on the  Betaseron–nothing like the major ones I experienced before.  Is it the drug?  Who knows! It may not be helping me at all, or it could be what is keeping me  walking (not very well, but, hey, I’ll take it!) Best of luck in whatever you decide to do! Sylvia

Response:

I’m seriously considering taking one of the three drugs – betaseron, copaxone or avenox.  I have had the remitting kind of MS for 16 years.  I have had some permanent damage from many of the attacks.  I would like to ask the following questions of people who have been on these drugs. 1.  For those on betaseron or avenox – did you take steroids for the first  3 months?  I’m concerned about getting hyper,  nervous and depressed because that is what has happened in the past when I’ve been on prednisone.     Was there relief from your MS symptoms while on betaseron or avenox?     Was the improvement worth having all the flu-like symptoms, pain of shots,          etc.? 2.  For those on copaxone – was there any relief from  MS symptoms? 3.  Why do you feel that being on any of these three drugs is worth experiencing the side effects? Thanks for your help :-)  Sue

I was on the study for Avonex for 2 years and on Betaseron for 2+ years and I didn’t have to take steroids for either one of them.  I myself got no relief while on either drug.  From what I understand there is not supposed to be any inprovement while on these drugs, just no worsening.

3.  Why do you feel that being on any of these three drugs is worth experiencing the side effects?

While I did not feel any different being on either dug, a few months after going off each one I had an exacerbation.  So I guess they must have been doing something right. I hope this answers some of your questions, Marcy http://members.aol.com/marcyrw2/MS.html

Sue,  I just started Avonex as I was starting to have symptoms that interfered with me doing my work at the office – To me Avonex was recommended and I also was happier injecting once a week rather than injecting every two days with Beta.  I currently am set to have 1 day of solu-medrol IV drip each month and the avonex injections weekly.  The first time I had horrible after effects from the avonex, second time I increased the tylenol to 4 doses (2 hrs before shot, at time of shot & twice more before retiring to bed) and had no after effects from the shot that time.   I will not know if the Avonex is working for sure, but I am hoping it will slow down the progression.  The solu-medrol is to help with some of my current numbness and I believe it is helping a little.  Good luck in your decision. PS I do not mind self-injecting the Avonex

Response:

Hi! I’ve been on Betaseron just over a year. At first I did quite well with

the

self injections. I take Baclofen, Amitryptiline and Paxil, too. I only

started

taking the Paxil (antidepressent) a few months ago. About 6 months

into the

therapy I began having anxiety attacks when I tried to inject. My

husband still

has to inject me but i don’t get upset anymore. I feel the

medicine has kept me

from having severe symtoms. I’ve had mild ones when

I’ve overdone. On the

subject of side effects; I found that if I take two

ibuprofen tablets when I

get my shot, I suffer no side effects. I have

tested this theory and find that

if I don’t take the ibuprofen, I get the

aches & fever. I’d like to switch to

Avonex for the convenience and fewer

injection sights (getting scar tissue) but

those two free months are a

powerful incentive. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -

I had one attack prior to staring Betaseron, and another three months into the treatment. I think you have to take it longer than that to see results. I received IV prednisone with an oral taper (total time, 2 weeks) for both attacks. The side effects gradually disappeared once I stopped the steroids, and my symptoms completely cleared the first time. I am now waiting for the numbness in my right side to completely clear; it’s gradually improving. My understanding of both Avonex and Betaseron is that they won’t make you feel better, but will decrease the number and severity attacks. Future MRIs should show fewer or no plaques have formed. Both are suppposedly equally effective, but I switched to Avonex because it’s more convenient, once a week rather than every other day, and it doesn’t leave any injection site marks. Beta leaves pinkish marks on some spots that take a long time to disappear. I continued Avonex while on steroids and experienced no adverse effects. I found the side effects about equal with both, and that is, the flu-like symptoms subside after a month or so of injections. Although the Avonex needle is longer and it goes into your muscle, rather than under the skin with Beta, I find no difference in pain sensation between the two. It just feels like a brief pin stick, and I barely notice it now when the needle goes in. I think it’s worth a try, if it will prevent future attacks and nerve damage. Beta and Avonex are both based on interferons that occur naturally in the body. I get blood tests every few months to make sure no damage is being done to my stem. I have also improved my diet, am using some herbal supplements, and am on a "maintenance" program of exercises prescribed by a physical therapist to keep me as mobile as possible. Manerix is one of the so-called "reversible" MAOI antidepressants. The main advantage it seems to have over traditional MAOIs (Nardil and Parnate) is that it doesn’t impose the hefty food restrictions they do. Against that, it seems to have picked up a reputation for not being very wonderful against PD, though *some* have reported successes with it so it might be worth a try. I was on it for a few months. Dear Brad (?), Hello, and welcome to ASAP! Depending on what you want the info for, you may have to be a little more specific… I monitor this group fairly regularly, and would hazard a conservative guess that at least 50% of us are on some sort of antidepressant. Some are on the older types (e.g., imiprimine, etc.) while many others are on the newer SSRI’s (Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, etc.) Some take an antidepressant alone, others take a combination of antidepressant plus a benzodiazapine …again, the benzos seem to range from good ol’ Valium to newer things like Xanax (alprazolam) or Rivotril (called Klonopin in the U.S., available here in Canada as generic "clonazapam".) Still others take only the benzo with no antidepressant. In this, as in so many areas of life, the watchword is YMMV (your mileage may vary.) For example, I take .5 mg Rivotril (clonazapam) and 10 mg imiprimine once a day, at bedtime, which seems to keep my panic attacks at bay. My doc has suggested a switch to Zoloft and gradually dropping the Rivotril, but I’m foot-dragging… partly due to fear of change (and possibly having to experience a flood of panic attacks) and partly due to the increased $$ I will have to spend on meds if I decide to switch. Hope this helps, Jane. —
