Question:
Okay so I am on the last part of a prednisone taper. After three days at the beginning, I was feeling pretty good (other than the side effects from the stuff)… I was off my albuterol and Robitussin and just taking the Flovent and Serevent. Then Saturday I woke up with a nasty loose congestion in my chest and I have been coughing it up ever since. To top it all off, my back hurts incredibly and I am dizzy a lot. My peak flows (which were getting better) seem to be dropping again. I took my albuterol this afternoon and I thought I was going to pass out. Need some input… Do I just have a cold? Does it sound like something more? I am so fuzzy headed I just can’t figure this out… Marina

cramping and flovent
Question:
It seems like all the doctors are the same way with where they put the blame. As far as they see it, the meds don’t have any bad effects. My doctor is that way.

Lisa, I was increased from 2 to 3 puffs twice daily of Flovent 44 about 3 months ago. Although I haven’t noticed increased cramping, the muscles in my lower legs and arms are very weak and feel like I’ve worked the muscles too hard (which I haven’t, unfortunately). Actually, they feel sort of like "spaghetti" at times. I have also gained about 10 pounds since the increase. What a drag! Have you experienced any muscle weakness? My doctor is always reluctant to "blame" oddities on my medicine.
Steroid use can cause upper limb weakness, both legs and arms. I lift weights and take potassium and calcium suppliments to counter this. Sue – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Patrice I am on Flovent 44 three puffs twice a day. I am having terrible cramping as of late. I used to be on Serevent that I know also caused cramping, and have since went off of it because of side effects. Now I am wondering if the inhaled steroids are causing this and if it is the particular brand I am on (Flovent) or if there is another type that doesn’t cause so much of this cramping. I am on Potassium, cacium, and magnesium supplements. I am wondering if I should switch, go off of the steroid, or what to do. I am also wondering if anyone else has noticed mood swings while on inhaled steriods. I noticed these symptoms increase after increasing from two puffs to three puffs twice a day. Any ideas will be appreciated. Lisa N

Hello- your dose of flovent is VERY SMALL. I doubt it would cause those problems. Most of us complaining/talking about it are on 220, at least twice a day, sometimes four. Remember to use a spacer and rinse/garble your mouth out well after you take it, it can never hurt. -jenny I am on Flovent 44 three puffs twice a day. I am having terrible cramping as of late. Yes I have noticed muscle weakness!! I am going back to 2 puffs of Flovent, and like I said, I have cut out Serevent. I have just added Intal also, which I hope will help. My doctor does the same thing, but enough people here have written about all these side effects to prove to me it is the medicine. I have NEVER had cramps and muscle weakness in my life, I am 32 and healthy otherwise. And I have had all the strange symptoms for the past 8 months, the exact amount of time I was put on all these asthma drugs. So that is my proof. I am hoping to get some good results from the Intal so I can reduce the Flovent and maybe get off of it all together. So you aren’t alone, your symptoms go along with my theory anyway. But even though he thinks that way, I got my second VERY BAD cramp in my calf last night while I was sleeping. This is the second one since I started Flovent and Serevent. Hi Staggy, I too find it easier to dish out advise then to "help myself". Anyway, I am looking forward to your posts. Lain — Warning: Be careful of the right side.

Lain – My ocd is mostly what they would refer to as a "pure obsessional". I don’t have much of the compulsions that are typical of ocd. "Fear" of future events is really hard for me. It keeps me isolated. I spent a month in a day hospital during october which did help but I have a lot of work left to do. The cure is worse than the disease itself. Staggy

Copied from a post I wrote a few weeks ago –
‘FWIW, most people who claim to be ‘pure obsessionals’ or to have ‘pure o’ OCD, in fact perform mental compulsions. Which is good news, in a way, cos it was previously believed that people with just obsessions (people with ‘pure o’ OCD) were more difficult to treat because there were no compulsions to deal with. Most experts now see the concept of ‘pure o’ OCD as outdated and not useful for proper treatment as more has been learned about mental compulsions. Now, people who were once labelled as ‘pure o’ and thus ‘difficult to treat’ are seen as just as treatable as people with ‘regular’ OCD.’ I would add that it could be that isolating yourself is a form of OCD avoidance, which is very typical OCD behaviour.
The cure is worse than the disease itself.
In some cases, yes. In many cases it’s the belief that the treatment is worse than the OCD that is the culprit. There are many studies that show that people with OCD devalue their ability to cope with ‘bad’ experiences, much more than people without OCD. Couple that with tendencies for people with OCD to exaggerate risk, catastrophize and to dwell on the negative, it’s no wonder many people with OCD do not do CBT. — ARQ Add a dot on each side of the ‘r’ in my name and a ‘c’ in front of lara to email me.

I also find it easier to help others than to help myself. I’ve been on this group for over for over 5 years and have gotten a lot of useful information from this group. I also find the moral support encouraging. I’ve was diagnosed with OCD & depression 12 years ago (have had it longer). I’ve taken Pamalor, Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, & some others with varying results. SOme were pretty good (like Pamalor and Paxil) but I didn’t like the side effects. I’m currently on Zoloft and Tegretol and I am going to stop the Zoloft (gives me diarrhea & makes me anxious) and try Luvox starting tomorrow. Welcome. Hi NK, It is a known fact that diarrhea is a side effect of Zoloft. However, my experience is that you have less risk of it if you take it with a full stomach. Also, thank you for letting me pick your brain about my current situation. JP

Effexor Withdrawal Causing Crackling Sounds in the Brain Antidepressants "Thank God for this website." I had a nervous breakdown six years ago and after being on other
anti-depressants without a problem, my psychiatrist felt that Effexor had less of an effect on the heart, and so switched me to Effexor. I have tried unsuccessfully to quit on many
occasions, even though I only take 37.5 mgs per day. The extreme lethargy I feel when I have tried to quit, the tingling in various parts of my body, the weird dreams and most
troublesome of all, the crackling, electric sounds in my head have caused me too much distress to ever be successful.
Hi, I think that you have to think about all these side effect problems. Maybe they are not side-effect, maybe they are only telling you that you are stressed, and you need to fix your problems, otherwise the side-problems will be forever with you B

As the meeting was breaking up and right in front of the presenter I asked him, "So you really think you may have ADD?" "Well, not as bad as you do." he said. Although, I don’t know for sure, it think it’s mainly ADD. Since caffine is a stimulant and gives you that extra kick in the butt that helps. I remember during some of my caffinated days, I would drink a large iced coffee and clean the whole house. Housecleaning is very difficult for me. My mom was, and is, the same way. She was never diagnosed with ADD but she has all the symptoms, but shes worse than me but that’s another story. I’m not sure if caffine helps depression I have that too but it never seemd to make a difference with me. Anxiety I’m sure it dosen’t help since caffine is a form of amphetmine and as I’ve found personally after long usage it was very bad for my anxiety so I had to stop. That’s what I did. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – In the midst of my recent efforts to have my daughter and myself assessed for ADD, my new partner and I attended a CHADD meeting. There was a presentation given on diagnosing adults by the woman who had recently assessed me. My partner suddenly began to wonder if he might have it and said he should get assessed. As the meeting was breaking up and right in front of the presenter I asked him, "So you really think you may have ADD?" "Well, not as bad as you do." he said. "Perhaps if you didn’t drink so much coffee, you might think differently." The presenter pointed out, as I already knew, that some people self-medicate with caffeine. Then a couple of days later I asked my partner just how much coffee he consumes in a average day, because I knew he drank a lot, but I had no idea how much. He told me that he drinks an average of 20-22 mugs of coffee each day! I was shocked! I have scoured the net for info on long-term health effects of consuming that much caffeine and there is none. I don’t think anyone else drinks that much coffee…certainly no one that has been part of any study, Excessive intake is said to be about 10 cups and he drinks twice that! There are only long-term studies on people consuming up to 650 mg of caffeine per day (about 6 cups) and there are potential serious effects on that. The so-called toxic dose is 10,000 mg (about 100 cups of coffee). Even so, my partner is consuming what would be considered an "overdose"…and then some! His hands tremor, but otherwise, he is suffering no apparent ill effects. I worry about ulcers and heart irregularities. He has only been drinking this much for about the last year, since he quit drinking alcohol. I now have no doubts that he’s self-medicating undiagnosed ADD and I want him to get assessed. I managed to convince him to cut back to 10 cups a day and gradually to 5 for the sake of his health. So far, so good. Has anyone else here tried to unknowingly self-medicate with caffeine to that extreme? Does anyone here even know someone who drinks that much coffee consistently?

I drank coffee from the age of about eight or nine … as a kid I would take a 30 oz flask of black coffee to school. In those days we had free school milk, so I would have half the coffee at morning break with the milk, and keep the rest for lunch. When I was finally diagnosed at age 40 I was drinking between ten and fifteen pints of coffee per day … often instant coffee with a TABLESPOON of granules per cup. What was interesting was that I didn’t get any sort of buzz, and could stop for a few days without any withdrawal symptoms apart from feeling more " unfocussed " Ian Ford

His hands tremor, but otherwise, he is suffering no apparent ill effects.
It is possible that the tremors in the hands could be the result od something besides the caffeine (*could*). My famyl has a history of hand tremors, which is a benign condition called "familial tremor" or "essential tremor". It has to do with overcompensating for fine motor skills. http://www.parkinsonsinstitute.org/tremor.html Even though this says "parkinson’s", ET is *not* parkinson’s syndrome. Some things can make my hands tremor more-caffeine is one of them. Fatigue, stress(physical or emotional) can do it. So are certain medications, such as my asthma meds. But even when not on these meds, or when I got "off" of caffeine, my hands still tremor to some degree. Then again, his tremors can be something else entirely. Like ADHD, it is a matter of finding out what it is *not* before one discovers what it *is*. Buny

ADDers do not measure coffee consumption in cups; the pot is the standard measure. Cutting back to 5 is good for your health.

I did that once in grad school. Ulcers are generally caused by bacteria or non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs. High coffee intake can cause cardiac arrhythmias. It’s pretty spooky but it goes away. It’s pretty hard to figure caffeine levels because it’s quite easy to make a cup of coffee four times as strong as the average weak North American coffee. I could fix 5 cups that would have as much caffeine as 20 restaurant cups. – George Before you buy.

Everything which you posted was so true, I congratulate you
Many years ago in a now outdated book called "Any Man Can" I learned that orgasm and ejaculation are NOT the same thing and that a guy can masturbate having multiple orgasms as long as he does not ejaculate. Just knowing that one can do this was a real shocker. The stop and start technique which you so very well described IS the way to multiple orgasms….and it works. For me it is not possible to do while having intercourse, because I really believe that "Mother Nature" intended us to ejaculate (as soon as possible) and reproduce. That IS what sex is really all about…..continued repopulation. I am interested in the ancient Celtics ad have read that groups of guys( cousins and brothers) stood around waiting their turn to have sex with the women…so any guy taking too long to "get it done" would most likely removed from the female. As an added interest since the "tribes" were brothers and cousins etc, any baby born would obviously look like every one else – fair skinned and lightish hair. This child would then be greatly accepted by the tribe regardless of its father. BOB

Fabulous answer, Fred . :::::::::standing ovation:::::::::::
Wes, First off, stop beating yourself up. EVERY man, expecially young ones masturbate. If someone tells you he doesn’t masturbate you can rest assured he’s lying (yes, even married men and old codgers like most of us on this newsgroup). From about 14, or whenever you reach puberty, through into the twenties, many masturbate daily or even several times a day. ALL MEN either fantasize about sexual situations or look at porno while they masturbate. IT DOES NO HARM! If you jack off too much, your body will make you slow down automatically because you’ll either get a sore dick or you just can’t get it up any more on that particular day. What CAN happen is you can train yourself to come as quickly as possible while masturbating, either because you’re afraid of being caught doing it, you’re doing it when you don’t have much time, or you feel guilty about it. When you start to have sex with a partner that quick-cum training can carry over and cause you to cum too quickly. As to not being able to get an erection again after you cum, that’s perfectly normal. It’s called a "refactory period", and the amount of time before you can get an erection again varies greatly between individuals. The older you get, the longer it takes before you can get another erection. It’s very rare to find a man who can get an erection again right away after cumming, or avoid losing it at all. Supposedly some young teens can, but I believe that ability fades quickly. There are some things you can do to avoid this Premature Ejaculation (that’s the proper name for it). One is to masturbate before you expect to have sex (far enough ahead of time to get through the refactory period). You should be able to last longer on the second go-around after masturbating earlier. Some recommend pulling out when you feel it coming, but before you reach the point of no return and having your _partner_ (not yourself) squeeze hard on the head of your penis. Some recommend trying to think of something else during sex; preferably something you don’t particularly like, to take your mind off it (although this seems to me like it’d take a lot of the pleasure out of sex). You can also be sure to wear a heavy duty condom and maybe get and use some desensitizing cream, (Prolong is one trade name) You can get it at a pharmacy or a sex shop. Be sure to put the cream on and then use a condom on top of it or you’ll desensitize your partner as well. The long term solution is to retrain yourself to lay back and enjoy sex for the great feelings of the slow buildup leading eventually to orgasm, without any sense of urgency. You can do this with SLOW masturbation to EVENTUAL orgasm, which will have the added bonus of relieving some of the sexul tension and horniness which contribute to your cumming too quickly. Extended mutual foreplay with your girlfriend, having her stop stimulation when you feel you’re near the edge, can also help. Concentrate on her feelings rather than your own, and try to get her to orgasm either orally, manually or both as many times as you can before you enter. A woman’s centers of sexual pleasure include the vagina only incidentally and she can get as much or more pleasure from stimulation of her clitoris, breasts and nipples, inner thighs, ears, neck, anus (stroke it lightly with a moistened finger or use your tongue), lips, buttocks, feet, and any other areas she points out (Ask her. Do the things she says she likes and avoid those she doesn’t.). Don’t overlook the value of holding, hugging, kissing and just general caressing. To me, at least, there’s nothing that’s as much of a turnon as giving my wife a series of screaming, out of control orgasms. There’s also a masturbation technique you could try to train yourself not to cum so quickly: First, you need to masturbate when you can take your time and really enjoy the sensations without the possibility of being disturbed. Lay back on the bed, use some good lube like KY jelly or Astroglide and handle your penis very lightly all over with the fingertips of both hands just enough to maintain your erection. Keep a cup of warm water handy to remoisten the lube from time to time. If you feel yourself getting too close, stop for awhile until the sensation slacks off, then begin again. The idea is to make the good sensations last as long as possible without ejaculating. Don’t use your fist, just the tips of your fingers lightly stroking the underside of the shaft, your balls, and your inner thighs. Run a finger lightly from your anus up over your balls to the tip of your penis several times. Relax and concentrate on the sensations and nothing else. You should be able to go on as long as you like this way, without ejaculating. When you decide it’s time to cum, increase the tempo and pressure just enough to bring yourself slowly to orgasm. Don’t beat it frantically.. remember there’s no urgency. In the future, try to avoid masturbating when you’re hurried for any reason, or there’s a possiblilty you might be disturbed by someone intruding on your solitude. Use this technique as often as the opportunity presents itself, and you should find that you’ll learn a lot more self control, as well as enjoying sex more. Using the extended foreplay techniques on your partner will make your sex last longer and give you both more satisfaction, even if you’re never able to lengthen the duration of actual intercourse. Good Luck!

– I am a 33 year old married mother of 3. And I have anxiety attacks and depression, I also suffer from migraines that leave me sick for days. Sometimes I don:t want to face the world, This is hard for my husband to understand, And even harded on the kids.
I sympathize with you completely….did you ever snap at your family because they bothered you in the middle of an attack? I have (not meaning to of course). My husband just barely understands my problem…..but I don’t he really gets the full picture of it. I take medication Zoloft.Xanax andAlprazolam Plus St. John Wort. Hopeing something will help. Everytime I have a pain I think I am dieing. I can"t sleep at night. And I am up all alone, which makes it worst. I want to be happy and enjoy life.
Usually I prefer to be alone when my attacks happen because I feel no one has to see me go looney (I’ve caught my daughter watch me once and I think it kinda scared her). My doctor (family) tells me I am to young for the other medications. But I need help. I can"t go on like this. I would like a piece of mind. It’s funny, my father has this condition and now that he’s on Paxil and feeling better, he’s less sympathic with me (although in some cases, he understands). I definitely feel the same way you do, and I’m glad you came out with your feelings. It’s good to know someone else out there feels the same way. Believe me, you are not alone. I just discovered that now when I found this group. Thank you guys for being here. Now I don’t feel so isolated. I find that, if someone else is around and I share what I’m going through, it only makes them nervous as there’s nothing they can do and usually they are afraid of doing something wrong. OTOH, it’s sometimes scary to be alone inthe middle of a real PA. I guess I just like to have my close persons know I’m having a problem and there’s nothing for them to do, so they won’t wonder why I can’t concentrate, etc., and try to help with no results or negative results. Hi Mechelle, I was reading your post and your description of your headaches caught my attention. Have you been to the doctor and explained how bad your suffering with these headaches?? This IMO, is more than a tension or stress related headache……sounds like a migraine. I suffer from migraines, my last one lasted two or three days, I get incredibly nauseous and can`t eat or drink, I need quiet( a joke with a 4 year old) and no lights. I can`t concentrate and it hurts to talk, can`t drive either, and I usually end up anxious because the pain is so intense. There are many new meds for migraines, you should really press your doctor on this issue, tylenol or aspirin doesn`t cut it with migraines…. I white-knuckle my pain, because I am a med-phobic, strangely enough, since being on Paxil I have been having them much less……which makes me quite happy!! Hope you are feeling better soon, and remember there is no reason to suffer with these headaches!! Jackie

Nothing strange about that Jackie. The newer migraine meds affect the brain’s serotonin pathways, although in a slightly different way to SSRIs. Ian

My wife also suffers from severe migraines and has tried dozens of meds with little or no success, except for one. Amitriptyline is the only thing that has ever worked for her, but it takes weeks to kick in and stop the migraines. YMMV but have watched her suffer for years and have never seen her feeling so good – she takes only 25 mg/day. Also it was prescriber by a neurologist who has seen more success with this than any of the new "wonder" drugs for migraines. I wish you lots of luck in finding a remedy. I know exactly what you are going through. I also have three children and anxiety is ruining my life. I haven’t been to work in three weeks because it has gotten so bad. The bills are mounting and I still don’t feel up to going back. I can’t even get through the grocery store yet I just want to feel normal again. I’m learning to deal with the attacks right when they start..but sometimes they are much stronger than me. Those are the ones that worry me as far as returning to work goes. I want my kids to enjoy their lives and I want to be a part of that. There are times I just feel like giving up, but I can’t because of them. They want to go to movies and I always have to make some excuse up because I don’t want them to know that their mother can’t stand to venture too far from home. The worst part is that home is starting to make me crazy because I really need to get out more…….but my anxiety doesn’t allow that all too often. All I can do is just pray this thing will go away and I can get my life back. I’m going to fight to get my life back…it may be the hardest thing I’ll ever have to do…..but what other choice do I have???.

Dear Jm, I too am a mother of 4 boys and I started having anxiety in august while driving my kids to our local rec. center. Since then i went to my family doctor for a number of test because i thought i was having a heart problem. we could never find anything and her dignoses was panic/anxiety. she gave me pills that made me hyper and i thought i was going to loose my mind. so my husband found a pysc. to help me he put me on xanax and imipramine to help control this. i still have these rapid heart beats and wake in the middle of the night and still cant accept that it is anxiety. but i am trying. My pill are lessening the symptoms and making the attacks much less, but it was 3:00am when i woke with this heart racing. maybe you just need an other type of med to help you. I hate to have to rely on meds, but i couldnt leave my house and still cant drive very far. crazy I know. I hope you know you are not a lone there are a lot of us out there. I’m not taking it, but IIRC, it’s an SSRI like med (it’s not precisely like Prozac, Zoloft, or Paxil, but it does inhibit reuptake of seratonin at (presumably different) selected sites) and it’s supposed to be more ‘energizing’ than the other SSRIs. (That is, the side effects tend not to be sleepiness or fatigue; they tend to be anxiety, etc.) — Everything I needed to know in life I learned in kindergarten. Hi, LaLaura: I take adderal and effexor. The effexor helps with my motivation and mood swings. The adderal helps my thought process and energy level. But I think that the effexor has an impact on my energy level too. A friend of mine has been taking effexor at 37.5mg three times a day (I take same dose twice a day) and his blood pressure went up. His ADD dr. is monitoring the blood pressure now before determining whether it’s the effexor raising the pressure, and if it’s not the effexor, then he’ll prescribe a higher dose of effexor. This friend of mine can’t seem to get anything done, and his motivation level even on effexor three times a day is really not good. However, this is probably because he has underlying emotional issues that he’s not dealing with……As for me, I’m doing really well on the dosage I’m taking. …..There’s so much stuff to do, to think about, to assemble. Have been taking Effexor for 3+ years. It has been the best of all of the antidepressants for me. None of the SSRIs worked, the Tricyclics had horrendous side effects, and Serzone also had some strange side effects. I started taking it in conjuction with Ritalin, but now take Effexor and Adderall. I do remember that the first few days Effexor was a little rough on my stomach, but those symptoms subsided within a week. Effexor reduces ‘reuptake’ of norepinephirine and dopamine as well as seratonin so it can treat both ADD and depression/anxiety. It even treated my allergies! Unfortunately, like a strong antihistamine, it caused me so much urinary tract irritation that I had to stop taking it.

Interesting. I’m grateful to you and to the other fine people who posted so far. I’m considering trying effexor, since both rit and dex leave much to be desired in my case. I’m not at all depressed, but I do apparently have temporal lobe as well as frontal lobe dysfunction, which has rendered me virtually handicapped, although I’m a sharp gal in many ways. For example, petty anxieties paralyze me, but I can be quite bold and effective in a real emergency. I have no sure sense of time or timing, unless I’m dancing. If music is involved I’m brilliant, but I’m never sure what day of the week it is. An hour can seem like a day, and whole days can zip by in seconds. Whole years vanish from my conciousness, but I’ll never forget some minor incident from my girlhood. Minor irritations that other people shrug off loom large to me, but things that terrify ordinary people are to me laughably tiny. In short, I’m out of step with the entire rest of the race of humanity. I don’t have a different drummer, I’ve got a whole dad-blamed different orchestra. It would not be a problem if people didn’t complain, but alas, much fault has been found with me, and I can’t keep a job to support myself. I would like to be able to provide for myself, at least. — Laura Goodwin "Pain is fleeting, glory is forever. Remember: scars are sexy."

That’s not true. It *CAN* happen; it can happen with most antidepressants, even those not known for it (some folks have reported sexual side effects from Wellbutrin, which has also shown a significant INCREASE to libido in one experiment), but the only way to know is to try. Wellbutrin and Serzone are the two noted for having the least sexual-side effects. — Everything I needed to know in life I learned in kindergarten. Rabbitt, how do you know you’re in the placebo group? Were you told or is this based upon the fact that it’s not working for you? Just curious since it’s not good science to tell people which group they’re in. It biases the results. In response to your question, Prozac is the only one I’ve tried. I’m asking because I’m involved in a depression study and I’m taking a research antidepressant. It appears that I’m in the placebo control group and I’m not feeling any better. After the study has ended (in about 4 weeks), I’m going to be given the real stuff free of charge for about 3 or 4 months and those are my choices. Any help would be appreciated! Rabbitt

Any input from someone up to date on the latest in water-related hypothermia would be appreciated. Now is the season for such problems. Oh, and let’s try to stay on the boat, wear a pfd of some style of our choosing, or wear a survival suit. I don’t have a "Gumby" style suit, but do have a padded "Cruiser" suit by Mustang. Wonderful thing. Keeps me warm at the wheel, and even when sleeping off watch at night off shore. Hard to get out of if need to use the head, and the crotch is too low for short me, but otherwise, a very good thing. We wore our suits at night along the Washington coast this *summer* and felt very comfortable. One has to get out of the suit in the morning as the sun warms the air or you get wet from the inside. I doubt that energy expenditure could be too much. Drownproofing allows even poor swimmers to stay afloat for hours. The hypothermia risk I think is a significant increased risk. You can drown-proof with your legs tucked up. This will reduce heat loss, but the head underwater is a worry. A floatcoat would be a much better option. Especially compared to basic drownproofing, but not as good as a "gumby". If caught overboard in a floatcoat, or other jacket, tighten the collar and waist drawstring to minimize the cold water exchange. Mark Anderson

At the risk of repeating what the previous post wrote, I don’t think the following can be said enough: Drownproofing is a life saving technique that is now somewhat discredited. From recent literature I have from the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Red Cross ‘drownproofing’ will SUBSTANTIALLY reduce the amount of time a person can expect to remain alive in the water compared to other techniques. This includes simply treading water. As the other posts have stated this is becuase of the greatly increased heat loss through the head when is it is in the better thermal conducter; water. Most of our body’s heat loss is through the head. However, if the water is very warm, then it might make sense if a person is starting to have difficulty treading water. Of course if a PFD is in the equation then treading water ceases to be much of a concern. But hypothermia is still a very real problem in the cooler waters this time of year. Our lake was 3 degrees celsius when we pulled out last week-end. The Coast Guard literature went on to state that wearing a ‘float coat’ can increase one’s survival time many times over what it would be with a standard key-hole lifejacket.
