6-MP – new pills??
Question:
I found some info on generic 6MP. Apparently a couple of companies are now manufacturing it: http://www.thinkpharm.com/pharma/preview/detail/index.php?searchtype=…

I just got my latest 6-MP rx through the mail as usual. Instead of the regular round, white pills, these look totally different. They are diamond-shaped and a different colour. Anybody else had these? Haven’t had a chance yet to take one into a pharmacy to check on it, but thought I’d check with you all. TIA Christine CD
Response:
Thanks for your replies; I feel much better now that I know others have received the same thing. In addition to now being diamond-shaped, these are an off-white kinda yellowish colour. The manufacturer of these is Prometheus the bottle says, and I wondered if this was the same Prometheus Labs in CA that does the tests; or at least affiliated. Haven’t started taking the new pills yet, but hopefully will have the same results as Deb – no change

I tried Prozac once a long time ago, but I had to stop after a few days. Prozac made me extremely anxious. Celexa is the best SSRI I have taken. I just switched from Zoloft to Celexa, and Celexa is equally or more effective as an anti-depressant with fewer and milder side effects than Zoloft, which is already a lot better than Prozac.

Question:
It’s been about two months since I’ve been on my meds, and my anxiety symptoms have pretty much disappeared except for one thing. When I go out I constantly watch my bag (which I put my water in) afraid that someone will slip me a mickey. (And at work too, etc.) Then at home I obsess about the household chemicals, afraid that they will get into my mouth or eyes. Does it sound like ocd? I’m about to go up to 50mgs of Zoloft on Wednesday, and hopefully this should help.

Dear Nicole, Obsessive thoughts are common with anxiety disorders and they can be part of OCD……only your doctor can tell you what yours are. I`ve had what my psychologist calls OC tendencies, so I can relate to your thoughts. Increasing your Zoloft dose might address this more effectively. Since being on Paxil, obsessive thoughts are gone for the most part. Glad to hear you are doing better

no not really it sounds like you are habituated to negative scary thoughts of someone hurting you or you being in a position at the mercy of others control-I would say you tend to be perfectionsitic and like even need to be in control but I could be wrong this is cyber space if the thoughts are intrusive and you cannot stop them once you make some controlled observations ie: you check the seal on the water bottle and are satisfied it is sealed etc-then this is a type of obsessive thinking and the meds and some therapy will hopefuly help LM

Hi Nicole, Does this worry about your bottle continue, or are there times when you are not so worried about it? We’ve a house full of anxiety people here
, and at different times some of us have had an obssessing spell, which stops, while others (me) still obsess a bit, but to no great extent. Fear of being hurt by chemicals, even tho there is no way they could actually get onto you, is an irrational after-trace of the major anxiety you were experiencing. I found similar thoughts, but didnt get really upset by them, as I knew they were extremely unlikely. That rationalising did not stop them immediately though. Eventually they did drift away. After many years of meds, I’ve found this symptom to have dissappeared.

Geoff, Thanks for the medical backing. I’ve made similar statements to my GI about pain relief; it’s nice to have a bit more knowledge to back it up. So far I’ve not had problems with pain relief, i.e. getting the right scripts, but you never know when that can change.

Are you taking a benzo…I got tired from Xanax, but not Zoloft…The heart palps and dizziness are signs of anxiety…I would suspect that perhaps you have the classic additional anxiety that you get when starting a new AD…I had tremors and other side-effects with Zoloft that increased my anxiety…This went away for the most part inside of a week, and continued to disapear in the following weeks… Best, — Charles Phipps

Question:
Dear Brenda, Please tell me what it is about meds (Xanax in particular) that you are afraid of? Perhaps we could offer some help in that direction. I have been reading all of your posts and I am so distressed for you. I posted you awhile back about the safety of Xanax and offered some relaxation and breathing techniques. Have you tried them? I guess I just cannot understand how a medphobic can take Zoloft with all the anxiety it causes you and refuse to take Xanax which could ease or eliminate your suffering. Why do you fear Xanax so much? And I sincerely believe that it is your fear of it that increased your anxiety when you took it. Just my opinion, of course. I just cannot stand to see someone suffer when they do not have to. Worried about you, Kathryn

WEll last night I upped my Zoloft from 12.5 to 19mg.(big deal). Woke up at 6am took .25 Xanax went back to bed for about 2 hours. Here is the question. I am med phobic and have not upped my Xanax to .50mg 3x day. Still take .25.My main symptom is constant and I do mean hyperventilation and shortness of breath. Today is day 15 on the Zoloft. Well this afternoon I decided to take .37mg of Xanax (a 25mg pill and a half). Within 10 minutes my anxiety went up. Tried to distract myself then I felt the Xanax kicking in. I get real groggy BUT THE BREATHING STILL IS SHORT.I was afraid to up my dose cux what if it doesnt help the breathing then I will feel hopeless. I am still kinda shook up and depressed and afraid. Please tell me Im doing something wrong or this is just normal for day 15 upping the dosage and being med phobic. Brenda
Response:
Kathryn I think that my biggest fear of taking the Xanax is that it wouldnt work. Now I started off with .25. My problem is my breathing (shortness of breath ans hyprventilation). I was hoping the Xanax would help be I really doesnt that much. It may take the edge off of the anxiety but the breathing problem remains. Also did you read my ost where yesterday was the first day that I upped my Zoloft from 12.5 to 19mg. I will post about that later. Now another fear I battle is that I have always hated lose of control. And when I first took the Xanax I would get very groggy, symptoms still there but very groggy. I would have bad thoughts on what if I cant breathe and am too groggy to breathe. That wont happen in Jesus name but the thoughts still come. Now when I wake up at 5 or 6am and take .25mg Xanax I can go back to sleep. I dont know maybe Ill have to upped the Xanax gradually. The pdoc want me to take .50 3 times a day. Brenda
Response:

Brenda, it is possibly, but highly unlikely that xanax won’t work for you – Xanax can calm an elephant! But, I guarantee that if you don’t take it, it definitely won’t do a thing. Now I started off with .25. My problem is my breathing (shortness of breath ans hyprventilation). I was hoping the Xanax would help be I really doesnt that much. It may take the edge off of the anxiety but the breathing problem remains.
Xanax can lessen your anxiety, but it isn’t a cure all. I suspect that your hyperventilating/shortness of breath has become ingrained to the point were its become an almost automatic response. Xanax cannot undo that, no med can. But breathing exercises like those previously mentioned by another poster should. The bottom line in this Brenda is that drugs aren’t magic. They can help a great deal, but you have to make an effort too. Sorry, but if this was easy, we wouldn’t all be here.
Also did you read my ost where yesterday was the first day that I upped my Zoloft from 12.5 to 19mg. I will post about that later. Okay, firstly the grogginess will diminish as your body gets used to the Xanax. Secondly, Xanax won’t stop you breathing, even if you pass out. In fact you will probably breath better. What is happening at the moment is that the conscious parts of your brain are overriding the auto settings. Left to its own devises the autonomous system would be doing a better job than you are!! Even when knocked unconscious most people continue to breath. The benzos are very safe drugs, even when taken in enormous overdose quantities most people just sleep them off. That wont happen in Jesus name but the thoughts still come. Now when I wake up at 5 or 6am and take .25mg Xanax I can go back to sleep. I dont know maybe Ill have to upped the Xanax gradually. The pdoc want me to take .50 3 times a day. Brenda
tackle the increase at a pace you can cope with, but be assured, the meds won’t kill you, drug companies find it cheaper to keep repeat customers rather than continually having to find new ones!!!!. Take care Ian

One of my fears about taking my ativan is that it wont work. When i am in the middle of a PA, I always have the comforting thought of "At least I can always take my pill". Do you ever feel that way? D

OMG that is the biggest fear that I have with my Xanax and alot of the time it doesnt help me that much because of the extra anxiety I have. However I suppose to be taking .50 3x a day and I only take .25 sometimes twice. But I couldnt believe somebody else has the same fear though. Brenda

Although, reports of antidepressants suddenly failing to work are becoming more common, its rare for his to happen with benzodiazepines. What may happen is that you begin requiring higher doses to achieve the same levels of control. But, most with anx/pan seem to gradually take/need less, not more benzos. Ian

It certainly will not work if you do not take it. I know if I tried only .25 I wouldn’t notice a thing. I must take from .5 to 1mg to have any relief at all. There have been days when I have taken up to 2mgs at once. started off with .25. My problem is my breathing (shortness of breath ans hyprventilation). Have you seen a doctor to make certain that your breathing problem is definitely physical? If it is not physical, that is, one of the many symptoms of anxiety and panic then Xanax can definitely help by letting you be calmer. When you are calmer you can breathe easier. I hope you have ruled out any physical cause such as asthma, though. remains. Also did you read my ost where yesterday was the first day that I upped my Zoloft from 12.5 to 19mg. I read about it. Pretty gutsy!
Good work! fear I battle is that I have always hated lose of control. And when I first took the Xanax I would get very groggy, symptoms still there but very groggy. I
The grogginess passes quickly (MUCH quicker that the side effects of Zoloft!) if you continue taking it. Maybe the symptoms are still there because of your fear of the grogginess or the Xanax not working. I hate the feeling of losing control, too. Which is why I don’t drink anymore. Hardly.
But grogginess is not loss of control. When you are in a high anxiety state you are way too alert, sensitive to every little thing and your mind races ahead of you. Xanax can put the brakes on all of that and the drowsiness you feel just may be your body saying to you, “Thank goodness! Now maybe we can get some rest!“ would have bad thoughts on what if I cant breathe and am too groggy to breathe. That wont happen in Jesus name but the thoughts still come. Now when I wake up
Too groggy to breathe? Impossible in anyone’s name! In fact, I can guarantee you that you will breathe BETTER when you allow yourself to sleep. I have said it before and I will say it again that our bodies function quite nicely when we give it over to the brain’s automatic control system. Better, in fact! We muck things up by over thinking. We all just think too much!
You know, the Divine Creator gave us pretty nifty bodies and will take care of them for us just fine when we give them over to sleep. For that matter, the Creator gave us Xanax through providing the plant valerian and us the intellect to use it. at 5 or 6am and take .25mg Xanax I can go back to sleep. I dont know maybe Ill have to upped the Xanax gradually. The pdoc want me to take .50 3 times a day.
Up it as you wish. But do it. I want to hear some success stories from you! BTW, I take Xanax .5 every four hours (that’s about 4 to 5 times a day) PLUS I take 1 mg of Klonopin (another benzo) at bedtime. I have the okay from my pdoc to take extra of either if I need to. Which happens, but rarely. BTW, my husband has mentioned to me that I breathe slower and deeper when I am asleep. I was very happy to hear that because I still have to work on breathing that way (the CORRECT way) when I am awake. Have you asked your hubby how your breathing is when you sleep? If not, ask! I wager he will tell you the same thing. To MissMaine7, Hi. Have you ever taken an Ativan at the onset of a PA? If so, how much? Did it not work at all, work a little, or work well? Love and blessings to all, Kathryn

You keep forgetting because of the flat feeling. You don’t like it. From my experience, the SSRIs – zoloft – may cause this feeling. I recently tried an SSRI that is new to the U.S. – Celexa - which made me feel like sleeping all day. I guess it reduced my impulsivity, but it increased my inattention. Paxil was also useless for me for several similar reasons. The Effexor seemed to be very helpful without the flat feeling, but I developed such miserable urinary tract irritation that I could not sleep. Fortunately, for you, this side effect is uncommon. In summary, my experience is that Effexor, which is not a SSRI, is more effective in ADD treatmant than SSRIs. However, for some people SSRIs are effective and often SSRIs are used in conjunction with other drugs to treat ADD. I would suggest that overmedication with SSRI’s is not good for an artist. It’s ok for an artist to be a little hypomanic. It’s far better than losing one’s creativity. Just don’t be tempted to be manic. Talk about a rebound effect… You should discuss your problem with meds. with your doc. so that you will take your medication as prescribed rather than self-medicate. Perhaps less Zoloft and more Effexor would work better. Perhaps your overall dose is too high. Your failure to follow dosing instructions could be showing that your ADD symptoms are not being well treated, also. I certainly can not tell you, but you should think about these possibilities. George

Well, actually I was sort of thinking of them being in orchards. Maybe instead of coca in South America. But I don’t know where they grow well. I know we have them in Northern California, but I don’t think I have heard of them growing in dry arid areas (where I think even olive trees can survive). It most certainly is in Europe. The wood has beautiful patterns. I think it’s more of a forest tree as they are very big and slow growing. Of course, these days I’d have thought dwarfing/fast growing root stocks would be available if walnuts were considered commercial enough! Bestishes Joanna

I’ve seen dwarf fruit trees, but I don’t recall ever seeing any dwarf nut trees, but I never really looked. In California, walnut trees could very well increase in value commercially if indeed they provide an oil that is both considered beneficial and able to be produced in various grades. California is experiencing a re-surgence of olive tree plantings and lots of varieties of flavored olive oils are showing up in all sorts of stores. So I wonder what walnut oil could be flavored with? Wendy hypo…@aol.com

Val, I think a similar post is what triggered my research into the food sources for various supplements. If you search for Chicken using DejaNews you will find a recipe or two for Chicken with Beans that gives you nutritional sources of both Magnesium and B-6. I will also see if I can round up a few more. The flavored varieties of olive oil usually use the "light" (late pressing?) olive oils, which have so little flavor of their own that they can handle being doctored with garlic, chilis, etc. Flavored olive oils are classic marketing success story: With virgin and extra-virgin olive oil gaining favor in the American market, the olive growers found a way to dress up the "less desirable" "pure" quality oil, call it a specialty product and jack up the price. Walnut oil, like extra-virgin olive oil, has a fairly robust flavor of its own; if you wanted to flavor it, you’d either have to filter the walnut taste out, or add flavors that went well with walnut. Thanks, it’s now on my shopping list. Various books recommend it when olive oil would not be appropriate and you want something more flavorful than a canola oil. Also came across a review of a cookbook in my searchings where someone said they were **tired** of all these recipes with olive oil, so I wanted to explore alternatives that would be as beneficial or better in some respects. Yesterday I was musing that walnut oil is probably a nice environmentally friendly crop (like olive oil, obviously). Comes from trees which cleanse the air, probably requiring little fertilization, and no post harvest burning (except that they probably burn branches with their yearly pruning). Do walnut trees only grow in certain types of climates? Does anyone know? I know we have lots of groves in Northern California. Wondering where it might be good to use it as a substitute for butter or margarine in various recipes. Wendy hypo…@aol.com

I thought walnut trees were the ones choked everything else out because of their high whatever (acidity?) so that nothing will grow under them. I know they’re the ones that shed so many leaves you are never done raking them. I’m not sure how people friendly they are if they’re in your own back yard. Cool Runnings, HomemakerJ

Interesting! My period came about at Day 23 the last time, and started with a flurry of small clots! Usually they start out pretty light and then get into the clot thing in a day or so. And I’ve been taking lots of gingko. And since I’ve been taking Gingko (about 3 months), I’ve had some awfully long periods One lasted 11 days! Thanks for this info.
The most helpful thing I’ve found, though, is really making an extra effort to eat a wide variety of whatever foods are in season, making sure I get plenty of exercise, and taking some supplements just to be sure of enough vitamins — especially chewable calcium (not Tums, which contain things I felt I don’t need).
I know I’m lacking in the water and exercise department. From other posts I’ve read, not drinking enough water is probably a contributing factor to other difficulties.
I try to eat only virgin olive oil, I continue to drink many herbal teas. My favorites are Celestial Seasonings, not the specialty brands, although I experiment with everything. I do think Sleepytime and Emperor’s Choice are the most relaxing, wonderful herbal concoctions I’ve found! I also drink a lot of other Ginseng and green teas and love Royal jelly (especially the Korean variety). Again, I feel they are calming.
Thanks to hubby (who’s a great and very particular cook), we always have virgin olive oil on hand. And herbal and various green teas, too — he’s a tea addict. Thanks for reminding me to make use of what’s readily available! Gosh, I get so caught up in putting out fires and managing crises that I can’t even think of the obvious! I think the St. John’s wort did help mild mood swings, but gingko seemed to worsen my bleeding and clotting. I really saw no real improvement with kava kava or black cohesh. When the clots were not huge, cayenne clearly did break them up. Cranberry may have helped. I think oatmeal is the very best thing I’ve found for digestion, or Ralston. With severe symptoms, I found that none of these things worked well, and did finally switch for health reasons to more traditional medicine. I felt that it really did make a difference in the moods after just a few weeks (I also try to get 2 cups of 1% milk or equivalent yogurt each day in addition). I also think drinking lots more water than one would think is necessary has been the best dietary change I’ve made (about 8 cups). My skin improved and female discomfort diminished markedly in only about a week after I started the water regimen. I try to eat only virgin olive oil, and if I *really* want butter or margarine, I occasionally whip real unsalted butter with olive oil into a soft spread (or canola oil, if it’s going to go on something with a delicate taste that olive oil could overpower). I continue to drink many herbal teas. My favorites are Celestial Seasonings, not the specialty brands, although I experiment with everything. Valery asked about herbs: This is most emphatically *not* my bailiwick, as my eyes glaze over at the tincture recipes. But I understand from plenty of folks that the "gold standard" for herbal advice on menopause is _Menopausal Years_ by Susun Weed. Weed is quoted extensively in _Dr. Susan Love’s Hormone Book_, and by any number of other health care practitioners. You can find some of Weed’s recommendations echoed in Love’s book, as noted…and in a truly hilarious online article, "Hotter than a Red-Assed Bee," whose URL escapes me at the moment, but there’s a link to it at http://members.tripod.com/menopause/ Probably the most important thing to remember about herbs, as I understand it, is that they’re not necessarily innocuous. It’s a good idea to read carefully and proceed with caution. For further information, see the web site of the American Botanical Council at http://www.herbalgram.org Regards, vlhb…@aol.com

Pick up the phone and call your local major metropolitan hospitals to ask if they have an anxiety clinic or psychiatric staff familiar with anxiety and panic disorders. Make an appointment and get another opinion on your case. Feel free to post the group or e-mail me for further info or support. Best Wishes, Arthur

Hello Gary I would think it’s a second opinion that you’re looking for. If all else fails you could treat yourself. It will mean a great deal of reading, research and being honest with yourself but it is (IMHO) a common misconception that expert guidance is necessary in all cases. Have faith in yourself and your own judgement, even if it’s let you down in the past. If you seek further professional treatment try to play a more active role – take charge. Hopeful,
