Barbra hirsch… Can u help?

Question:

So why is it there is such a shortage?  Is it for all types of phentermine? I was told that the company stopped making the 30 mg dosage so people were getting 15mg and taking 2.  But that the 37.5 was not a problem to get.  Is this wrong? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was reading a transcript of one of your chats on WebMD and I followed a link you had posted there to an Rx site http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/phenterm.htm. . I see that they have Phentermine hcl there. The cost is $20 for a 90 day supply. I was wondering if this was pure phentermine? I bought some phentermine pills a while back from another site and paid about $300 for a 90 day supply. I am wondering if you can tell me what the differences are in the different mixes of phentermine. I used to be on Phen-fen and have just never found anything quite like it since. I have pretty good results (2pnds per week) with the phentermine, but now I am not sure what kind to buy and where to buy it at a fair price. I would really appreciate any feedback or help you could give. As far as I know RxList is a monograph service, and it does not sell drugs. $20 for a 90 day supply sounds kind of low, maybe for a 30 day supply. But I don’t have any information about which pharmacies are reliable, or where the best places are to buy it. I do have a few "virtual pharmacies" listed on the OMR site, but they are regular pharmacies (like the cyberpharmacy) and they require a prescription from your doctor. With the shortage I don’t know what pharmacies still have generic phentermine, and I have no real advice to offer you other than that given in the April 2000 issue of OMR on the phentermine shortage. If you are interested in information on the various types of phentermine, there is an autoresponder on the Obesity Meds and Research News site. Just go to the FAQ page and click on the phentermine primer. That will send you an e-mail with the basics about all the major types of phentermine. You might also want to stop by current obesity medications FAQ and read the section there on phentermine. Been out of town for the last week, and off-line for the last several days. Hope this helps. That doesn’t sound low at all for the wholesale price.  A 60 day supply goes for $17.76 at drugstore.com.

Can anyone point me to sources for (side)effects of long-term use of the above in adult onset asthma? David

Becotide is beclomethasone, a steroid inhaler. Its been around since about 1977. Serevent (salmeterol) is a fairly new drug, a long-acting bronchodilator, released around ‘93 or ‘94 I think. You could start off with the Mosby’s prescribing info at: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/beclo.htm beclomethasone http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/salmet.htm salmeterol In general, long term studies have not been run. There are newer generation steroid inhalers which are supposed to have lower side effects for the same efficacy. Budesonide (Pulmicort) and fluticasone (Flovent). The side effects of oral steroids like prednisone are well known. At low doses, the steroid inhalers seem to have neglible side effects for most people. At High Doses some people start to show the classic symptoms of oral steroids. See: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/pred.htm prednisone Bronchodilators like Serevent have not been shown to have significent long term effects to my knowledge; short term effects can be severe in some cases, especially when first starting the med. :Hi all, : :Having a great deal of difficulty with the side effects of the SSRIs, and :also having trouble sticking w/them as a result. : :Which SSRIs do you think have the least side effects? : :Thanks, :Carol Dear Carol, There really is no easy answer to your question being reactions to meds are so very individualized. One SSRI that quite a few are having good luck with is Celexa. However, there is no guarantee that this AD would cause you the least amount of side-effects. How many SSRI`s have you tried? There is also a chance that you just can`t tolerate SSRI`s. You might want to talk to your doctor about the Tricyclic class of antidepressants, they are as effective as the SSRI`s. Take care :) Jackie ~*~In Everything You Hope Or Do, I`ll Encourage And Believe In You~*~

Hi all, Having a great deal of difficulty with the side effects of the SSRIs, and also having trouble sticking w/them as a result. Which SSRIs do you think have the least side effects? Thanks, Carol

This is very much an YMMV matter, our reactions to meds are so individual. In theory Celexa is supposed to have the lowest side effects profile of the SSRI’s. You are not married to SSRI’s by the way, there are other antidepressants out there too (such as the TCA’s). Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Does anyone have experience with taking Celexa vs. Prozac?  Thanks so much.

Response:

Does anyone have experience with taking Celexa vs. Prozac?  Thanks so much.

I tried Prozac once a long time ago, but I had to stop after a few days. Prozac made me extremely anxious. Celexa is the best SSRI I have taken. I just switched from Zoloft to Celexa, and Celexa is equally or more effective as an anti-depressant with fewer and milder side effects than Zoloft, which is already a lot better than Prozac.

Question:

I need some help/advise. Heres my story. I am reposting it again to make sure everyone reads this. And maybe SOMEONE can help me. here goes… hello. I am a 23 yr old male, married, with 2 kids. I have come to the conclusion that i may be suffering from a major mental sickness, well, i know i am, but i just dont know which one. I have been put on anti depressents but they dont work. But, i have never told anyone of all my symptoms, and have never heard of anyone else having them and feel like i am all alone. I could really use some feedback. ass normal symptoms of depression, but you;’ll see some disturbing ones that are MORE than depresiion. 1.Wild mood swings, depression to almost on a high, can happen several times in a day. one minute i can feel like i am better than everyone, and next, i can feel that everyone is better than me. and i am shit. 2.Weight loss and gain. 3.moods go with weather, when it rains i feel more confident and happy, when its sunny, i feel like shit. this isnt always the case, but alot of the time 4. sometimes hyper, sometimes lazy 5. uncomfortable around people who i think are more attractive than me, or people my own age 6. fear that everyone is looking at me, and feer of embarassment, EXTREME fear of talking in front of more than a couple people. 7.Sometimes dont wanna leave the house and i dont know why… it’s like i wanna leave but cant. 8. get chest pains and think i am dying….. 9. dangerous and spontaneous behavior, like reckless driving, gambling 10. when i know i have to be still, i tremer uncontrolably… like when someone is watching me do something with my hands, they will go OUT of CONTROL. even when i am getting a haircut, if i know they are cutting like my baings or sides, and i KNOW my head has to stay still, it will jerk  really fast, and my neck muscles will tighten up, and then my head will like tremer. 11. sometimes very weird thoughts, and like someone is running me down inside my head. like calling me a fuck up and stuff like that. 12. sometimes i feel uncomfortable around my closest freinds, and dont know what to say… and have to leave. 13. cant do anything in front of anyone except close friends or family, like type, or even hold my hands steady, etc. 14. I find myself in these very weird moods where I feel like someone else 15. marijuana makes everything worse most the time. dont do it anymore. but once i was talking to myself out loud on it, and thought the devil was inside my head, and weird stuff like that. i was told it’s depression and social phobia, but i think it has to be more. have been put on, paxil, prozac, effexor, none work and gives me sexual side effects. Right now i am on nuerontin for my panic symptoms and a mood stabalizor, nuthing for depression because it doesnt work, and xanax for extreme panic, but i save my xanax for like haircuts, or first days on jobs. If i take like 3mg xanax(big dose) before my haircut, it’s not as bad, but it’s still there. Xanax has helped me the most so far, but i am becoming too dependent on it. I mean, who has to take xanax so there head dont shake for a haircut? Or say they can control their hands from shanking uncontollably when doing a job in front of someone. especially in that high of dose. a small dose has never worked for me. I feel helpless, and almost dead in a way. my family or freinds dont know about this, and has been gradually getting worse since the age of around 17 i beleieve. i would like to go back to school, but I would rather take a bullet to the head, than have to recite a speech in front of people. Xanax couldnt even help me there. I am so scared and confused. Its very hard for me to make friends too because of this. I am beggining to think that its some sort of manic symptoms, but dont know. have been to mental health sites, but cant find any kinda disease about the UNCONTOLLABLE shakes and tremers. I welcome all replies, and hope someone has been thru this and made it. Have had some thoughts of suicide, but would never do it, there no way cause of my kids, and i’d just be way to scared and the damage it would do to my family. someone please help me. have been to shrinks, but havent told them everything, probably wont. I just want honest replies and maybe someone knows whats wrng with me. Please help me, i pray to god every night for help, maybe i will find it here. Thanks! and also, and opinions on the meds i am currently taking? I will go now! PEACE!!!!!!!

Response:

I’d say you got manic bi-polar depression or just a case of bi-polar II, maybe some seasonal depression, Social aniexty/panic disorder…. not sure though but it seems you fall into that area.. I have the same symtoms like you said you got, except I was very shy and quiet, and didn’t have as bad of panic attacks.. I feel the same shit, just not as bad.. I take 0.5mg Xanax 3 times a day and 40mg Celexa once a day and I feel normal, like I never felt before… I been on Depakote 500mg twice a day for about 6 months then I stopped it because it made me lazy, and even after I stopped it, my manic side was still somewhat dead. That was about 8 months ago, and I still feel great now. I found nothing to kill my shyness, until I found Dextromethorphan :)  I wanted to get high on something, marijuana just made me act stupid and makes you think about your problems too much and you get all down from that..   So I read on the net, Robotussin Maximum Strenght Cough , one 4oz bottle only contains about Dextromethorphan HBr 355mg as the active ingredent.  My first time I chugged down the whole 4oz at once, within a hour I started to feel the effects of the DXM. It was nothing like marijuana, but it’s more up into the area with LSD, depends on the dose you take. After about 8 hours the high was almost gone, and I went to sleep.. The next 2 weeks after that, just being on my regular medication and not redosing the DXM, I felt like a new person. My shyness was almost totally gone, I could talk to people without mumbling and even keep a good convosation going without shyness or panic or worrying how I am acting.. I regularly use DXM now, just about twice a month, at a dose of about 600mg.. I have done all the way up to 1.1g to see the effects. It’s non addictive, maybe mildly "mentally" addictive for some. My point is here, I spent so much money on all different kinds of mental drugs for shyness, aniexty and depression, and all I needed was a bottle of Robitussin for $4.95.. Amazing stuff, it even cleared all the acne from my face. (19/male) Now I am about to start college soon, I am going for a good degree from a univeristy for Chemistry, and maybe into Bio-chem too.            -shroomy/Rob

the fact you are on mood stablizers…and an AP   rather than neurontic…is indicative your doctors are way awead of you   perhaps they dx’d you as bipolar II or classic manic depression but didnt tell you or something? they do that if they dont think the patient can handle it…or if you have a good job, and insurance…that you might lose if dxd as bipolar…etc.. yes, – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

I’m piggybacking on this post because I never saw the original.  Have you ever described all of these symptoms to a doctor?  I don’t want to try to "diagnose" you but I will say that when a disorder goes undiagnosed for a long time a lot of complications can come out of it.  I had anxiety disorder and depression (still do, I guess) at age 16 and had probably had them since I was about 12.  What prompted me to get help was that the panic attacks started scaring me quite badly and I absolutely would not go out in public – at first I’d cross the street to avoid people looking at me, then I’d walk instead of taking the bus, then I stopped going to school because I was having panic attacks constantly.  Being 16 and never treated I had no idea what was wrong with me and I was sure I was just plain CRAZY.  I got help after refusing to leave my house for 2 months straight.     Anyway, all I’m trying to say is that I’m sure the symptoms are as horrible as you describe, but they probably don’t indicate any horrible dreadful untreatable disease, most likely the result of living with them for a time and paying a lot of attention to them.  Get yourself to a doctor and remember, antidepressants do take some time to work.  You shouldn’t have to take that much Xanax to stop shaking in public but if you get treatment and "start small" you might find that your anxiety eases up over time and eventually you’ll be able to handle those situations.  A word on the Xanax – it’s quite addictive and when you’re done with it you need to taper off slowly if you’ve been taking it on a regular (daily, every other day) basis or you’ll have the weirdest symptoms ever and you might not know what’s going on (and think you’re going crazy – just what you need, right?).     For what it’s worth, I still have the occasional, very occasional, panic attack but it’s been 14 years since I first started getting treatment for them and have learned to "manage" them.  I have trouble now comprehending how terrifying it used to be for me to sit on a bus on a "sideways" seat, you know where you look into the aisle at all the other people?  There are a lot of things I couldn’t do back then that I mostly just take for granted now. Get help, and be honest with your doctor about ALL the symptoms.    Best of luck to you,         Liz B

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’d say you got manic bi-polar depression or just a case of bi-polar II, maybe some seasonal depression, Social aniexty/panic disorder…. not sure though but it seems you fall into that area.. -shroomy/Rob I need some help/advise. Question:

I just changed my 9 yr old son’s dr…..he was on 75mg luvox and 1-1/2 mg risperdal for OCD/ADD/anxiety.    The meds were great for a few months but then it seemed he needed to change (had alot of tantrums, frustration, very impulsive etc) and the old doc wasn’t cooperative and very hard to talk to. Went yesterday to a new one and she changed him from Luvox to Zoloft (we’re reducing Luvox for a week and slowly adding Zoloft).  Also she split up the Risperdal so he takes some in the morning and some at night instead of all at once.  I hope the Zoloft works for him.  Does anyone have any comments about any of these meds, specifically for children?  Thank you Debbie

Sounds like your child is in good hands now. However, no-one wants to do research on the use of psych meds in children and pregnant women, so how these meds are used in these specific patient populations is taken from research done on nonpregnant adults. Chip Before you buy.

Hello everyone!! just wondering if anyone had this happen to them.  My doc put me on zoloft started at 12 1/2mg for a week then 25mg for 2 weeks then 50mg when i started taking the 50mg it made my heart flutter, so she put me back on 25mg again but it is not doing much for me now she wants me to try the 50mg again and i am scared she said try 25 in the morning then 25mg at night i am scared to do that also any suggestions? I just didnt like my heart doing that and i am scared it is going to happen again HELP Thanks Diana

I must say that your doc isn’t doing this as badly as some other docs do. She realizes that you have to wean on Zoloft slowly and that’s a good thing. Still, between 25 mg and 50 mg there is 37,5 mg. I think it’s advisable to try that first. Moreover it seems advisable to ask for a benzo (Xanax) on the side *as needed* which may help avoid or minimize initial Zoloft side effects like a fluttering heart. I hope you will hang in there as it takes about 8 weeks to be able to properly assess Zoloft’s value for you (but beneficial effect may be felt much earlier). Philip

Diana –   I experienced a return of side-effects for a few days with each increased dose of Zoloft…One side effect for me was the shakes, which increased my anxiety and led to a racing heart…I suspect that you perhaps are having a similar experience…You may have to go through a few days of side-effects like this to reach a theraputic dose…And I checked the PDR, heart attack is not listed as a possible side-effect of Zoloft so don’t worry! :) Later, — Charles Phipps

Hi Diana, I have been dealing with those heart flutters on and off for years. I get mine when I am anxious, drink too much coffee, and have PMS. I don`t like them, but they are harmless. You won`t know if you will get  those flutters, unless you try the 50mgs again. There may be a way to lessen that possibility. Instead of going from 25mgs to 50mgs, go to 37.5mgs. Getting to your prescribed dose is not a race. You want to be as comfortable as possible, and if it means going at a slower pace, so then be it. Watch your caffeine consumption too, it can trigger the heart flutters. And if you should get them , remember they will pass and are harmless. Asking your doctor for a benzo might help too. I was started on 25mg of zoloft daily about two weeks ago for anxiety and panic disorder.  The first few days I took it I had some crazy mood swings but those went away after a while.  Lately I’ve had two episodes of depression that I wonder about.  I know that most side effects are supposed to go away but is this something I should talk to my doctor about immediately or should I just try to tough it out and hope that it goes away.  So far it’s been pretty bearable so I think I could get through it.  Any comments on this would be appreciated and any information on zoloft in general would be great.

15 mg if Zoloft is a subtherapeutic dose, it must be raised. The best way to do that is by weekly increments of 12.5 mg to avoid unpleasant side effects: *start low, go slow*. It may take a few weeks but your depression should disappear. So yes, ask your doctor to raise the dose 37.5 mg etc. Philip

Response:

Hi, Jack, I take Zoloft and Clonazepam for depression and anxiety.  25 mg is low so maybe you could call your pdoc and see about a slight increase.  It never hurts to check in with your pdoc and let them know how you are feeling. smiles, Elise

Hi I have often had tinitus.  On and off.  The doctor once gave me a long story about how it was just a disease.  Its been quite bad lately and I found out in the last few weeks maybe from this newsgroup ( if so I apologize ) that it is caused by aspirin. For what it’s worth, I, too, suffered from tinnitus while on Zoloft (for a similar period of time as you) before switching to Prozac.  In my case, the tinnitus went away within days of stopping Zoloft.  I wouldn’t give up hope that yours will fade with time too. Good luck, Bob

(I got off it because it began to give me night tremors).  However, only after a month on it, my ears started ringing/hissing.  I also had a bad sinus infection at the time and I assumed it was related to that, never thinking the medication would do such a thing (HA–looks like the joke was on me!).  When I related this to my doctor, she never let on that she KNEW some antidepressants caused tinnitus (why not, I am now asking myself) and continued to let me take the drug for 6 more weeks!   I’ve been off the Zoloft for 6 weeks now, and I STILL have the ringing/hissing in my ears.  Has anyone ever had this happen?  Is this EVER going to go away?. It drives you crazy and I fear now I’ll have it forever.

I started on 25mg, two weeks later increased to 50mg, and then two weeks after that 100mg. I finally gained some control over my "problems." I was taken off Zoloft and put on Celexa for a 6 week rollercoaster. I’m back on the Zoloft, and have been since February. I’m up to 200mg a day.     Now, I have little side effects. In the beginning I had a lot of side effects, those you listed, extreme dry mouth, but not the rash and I still have a hard time getting out of bed at a decent hour, I have to keep myself on a very strict sleep pattern, or when I get off of it, I don’t go to bed until 2,3,4am, then never make it up in time to make it to work by 8:30am. And yes, the decreased sex drive is a pain.     Are you taking anything with the Zoloft? I was taking 100mg Zoloft and 4mg Xanax daily, now I’m on 200mg Zoloft and 3mg Klonopin daily. That might also explain the rash, and the waking up thing.     Hope this is of some help for you. Much Love, Brooke Hi Brooke, Do you take anything for the manic depression? Chip

No, because it rarely rears its ugly head, the manic side at least.. it’s often usually just regular old depression, however, we are keeping an eye on it (Daily journal of what’s going on and keeping track of how often the manic side rears up). The pdoc is really concerned with me hiding my depression from people as well as I do, so he wants to try and get that and the anxiety all under control. Much Love, Brooke PS I think the Klonopin helps with the manic too… that’s just my thought. Since I’ve switched from xanax to Klonopin I’ve had a lot fewer manic episodes. B.

Yes, these are common side effects from weaning on Zoloft and should be temporary. I knew about the decreased sex drive and can probably handle that. On the contrary you may not have noticed much positive change because you’re on a subtherapeutic dose. I think you should consult your doctor (hopefully a psychiatrist with some knowledge of anxiety disorders and not a GP…) about raising the dose. However, the best way to do this is in increments of 12.5 mg in order to avoid or minimize side effects caused by the dose increase. Having a benzo like Xanax or Ativan on the side to take *as needed* may be helpful too. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text — Tom Semmes 301-530-9586 Fax 301-530-9587

Hi Tom, Welcome to ASAP! Alot of the symptoms you mentioned liked headache, weight gain and fatigue are side-effects of Zoloft. You could try going down to 25mgs ( ask your doctor first)  to see if the side-effects decrease but there is a good chance that 25mgs would not be enough to control your anxiety. The therapeutic dose of Zoloft is 100 to 200mgs, although there are people that do well on lower doses. It is also possible that better. Only you know what side-effects you are willing to tolerate or not tolerate. It is important that you talk to your doctor about what is going on so something can be done to help you. Take care :) Jackie ~*~When you get to the end of all the light you know and it’s time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: either you will be given something solid to stand on, or you will be taughhow to fly~*~

Some people do well on 50mgs of Zoloft, others do well on 100mgs and then person to person. Sedation and feeling tired are common side-effects of antidepressants which is why it`s so important for people with anxiety disorder to start antidepressants at a low dose (zoloft would be12.5 or 25mgs) and to wean slowly (with Zoloft increasing the dose in 12.5 or 25 mg increments once a week or so). We tend to be sensitive to the side-effects of medication. Had your friend started Zoloft at 12.5 mg or even 25mgs the sedation may not have been so bad. She could try to stick this side-effect out, it might start to diminish once her body adjusts to the 50mgs. If she finds this side-effect is just too much for her, she should call her doctor and ask to lower her dose. Take care :) Jackie ~*~Do unto others as though you were the others~*~

If her sleepiness is due to the Zoloft, she could try 25 mg/day for awhile, and then raise the dose. Chip

Response:

I definitely agree with lowering the dose initially. She could also try taking the 50mg at bedtime. Zoloft is one of those medications that usually must build up in the system over at least two weeks and it doesn’t really matter if you take it in the morning or at bedtime. Often it is just trial and error to find the regime that works best. Good luck, Russ,  M.D.

Generally it takes up to 6 weeks for antidepressants to work.  Some though are fortunate that feel "something" happening by the end of the first week. Don’t give up.  Keep it up. I thought you might have written in another post about difficulty getting an orgasm.  This is experienced with SSRIs, and when it comes so soon after initiation of treatment it is more than likely due to that.  Let your MD know and he may want to change to another SSRI or some other antidepressant that does not have this side effect. kksoo

Alkthough I don’t have experiences with Zoloft I did take three other meds from the same (SSRI) group of antidepressants. These have in common that it may take awhile (anything up from 2-10 weeks) to take effect. So take that time to give the med a chance. After a week it’s already a very good sign that you experienced no side effects or heightened anxiety. This may well be the right med for you! Hi Debbie, Zoloft can cause sweating and headaches and that could be what your son is experiencing. I would mention this to the doctor, it should go away in a few weeks and appears to be mild, so I wouldn`t worry. That is wonderful that Zoloft has helped your son so much :) ) Take care!! Jackie

Oh yes, the UK where psychiatry still has to be invented…. 12.5 mg is the recommended starting dose (half a 25 mg tab), 25 mg may be managed but 50 mg is cruelty! Hopefully the Ativan will take you through these weeks as your body is adjusting to Zoloft. You should give Zoloft between 6-8 weeks to be able to evaluate its effect, but it’s entirely possible that you will feel better sooner than that. Philip

Hi: I am on ZOloft 25mg a day, and klonipin 3mg a day (all at bedtime)  I take benadryl 50mg PRN if I can’t get to sleep. For your stomach acidity, I had the same problem, and a simple dose of Zantac 75 (available without prescription) works wonders for the acid problem..in fact..NO problem!!!..It also doesn’t have any side effects. My pdoc lowered my Zoloft prescription after I found it caused too many side effects. At 25 mg’s at bedtime, it works wonders. I’ve been on it about a month now. Again, the benadryl as per needed, (even if I have to take it every second night!!) works great to knock off to sleep. Most impotantly, it keeps my sleep pattern regular.(ie. don’t sleep all day, and stay awake all night, which was my problem before I took the benadryl) Also, Gravol is simular to Benadryl, but a little bit milder, so may also want to consider this. These are non-prescription drugs, so you can take a shot yourself, and if they work..GREAT!! They’ve worked for me, and I’ve heard they worked well for many other, but, just try, as YMMV… Best of luck.. James — "All of us get lost in the darkness… Dreamers learn to stear by the stars.." I too am on Zoloft, but have not had any drinks since I started back in January.  I was warned that it would effect a person just the way you described it.  I’m not sure I could handle it and really don’t need the *extra* depressive influence right now. A possible hazard is "serotonin syndrome" at least at higher doses of the Zoloft. My theory (for my liver) is that the liver goes after the booze first and the Zoloft hangs around longer until booze-sobriety. Of course, your liver is different, and you might have a different reaction. It would probably work to go on a Zoloft holiday during a weekend drinking session. Better yet, avoid drinking in the first place. A wierd side-effect with Zoloft not involving booze involves the voice. I’m multi-accented, and one accent, my drinking accent, requires I change the sound of my voice to add "distortion", which has interfered with singing. Now, I don’t do that one accent as well, but my voice doesn’t break up when singing. This side-effect is unique to my exact voice, and probably doesn’t affect anyone who is single-accented. — CAUTION: Email Spam Killer in use. I too have been on Zoloft for 18 months. I still drink wine and beer, finding that after 3 glasses of wine for dinner, I seem quite intoxicated. Does drinking enhance my depressed mood? I believe that the day after, my mood seems more depressed than usual, plus my sleep is interupted during the night after drinking, making me feel more tired and irratable. And forget about sex <g..my SO needs a two-by-four to whack me into a sexual realm <OUCH!!

I was wondering about this subject.  See ever since I went on ad’s (just Effexor and now Prozac) I seem to have lost any desire for drinking. (of course, supplementing that with pain killers is probably a good reason) Anyway, when I was in Vegas, I just wanted to get good and drunk and I couldn’t.  I had two Banana Colada’s (oh my god, they are heavenly)…got buzzed then had to take a nap.  It’s weird. Absolutely no desire what so ever to drink.  It justs make me feel lousy.  I wonder if that is due to ad’s cuz before them I drank all the time (well not all the time) but I was in college and partied quite a bit. ?  Anyone else find this happening? Now……if I can only get the same effect with the pain killers! Nik They say, "she’s crazy as anyone can be" That’s what they say, they say of me…….Sheryl Crow "On the Outside"

Okay…couldn’t find the original question but I know its one that I myself asked many times (what happens when you drink..on prozac..etc.) I have been on Prozac for almost two years..and have been an alcoholic for about 6 mos (yes I’m about to go into treatment..no worries). I never found that drinking interacted with the drug itself in any way…but I know that as a depressive…drinking for me was not such a good idea (I am invited to every college party..not because people like me..but because my screaming and/or crying jags seem to liven up any game of as*hole) So do I recommend drinking on Prozac? Who cares! I DON"T recommend drinking if you are sick..and being on prozac would imply that…. CAUTION: Email Spam Killer in use. I think the fact I was off to bed anyway probably meant that I slept through the worst of it ! The good feeling the next day was probably just the tail-end of the effect. I’m undecided whether to try again. I’m over my depression now thankfully but am being weaned off the pills slowly. My chance to do this again will be gone soon ! Well, I felt wonderful, I was buzzing all day the next day and had a wonderful sleep that night. After looking at the info leaflet that came with the drugs I noticed it says " avoid alcohol." Just curious.. does this happen with other anti-depressents? i just did a short trial of wellbutrin, and while i was researching it i came across repeated warnings that alcohol can increase the risk of seizure while on this drug. i wouldn’t drink while taking it if i were you. Erik Erik Martin Schneider rhetorician of sorts http://www.concentric.net/~catdoc

Hi Steve, Recently I decided to see what happened if I combined my Prozac (40 mg at that time) with about one standard drink of a vodka, wine and lemon mix (bottled, so I know it was mixed properly) and a tiny bit of Bayleys Irish Cream (which was disgusting!), spead out over several hours at a party. I felt fine for a while, but according to my father he could see in my eyes that I was smashed!  About 4 hours after I stopped drinking I started vomiting and was up repeatedly during the night.  I still felt tired and sick the next day. I’ll admit, the facts that I’m female, have a small body size, and am fairly inexperienced with alcohol didn’t help, but I should not have been that bad after two standard drinks (maximum!) I purposely mixed alcohol and prozac in a safe, controlled environment to see how it would effect me.  All I can say is NEVER AGAIN!  For me, it just wasn’t worth it. If it didn’t effect you too badly, drinking occasionally and in a controlled way shouldn’t hurt.  But only occasionally and only one or two drinks, because in my opinion, since alcohol is a depressant anyway, more than that could be dangerous. Just my two cents worth.  I hope this helps.  Been on prozac for a month, I’ve found a personal peace I’ve never known before. Prior to that, I was on serzone. It wired me. Works for me but I need 40 mg per day. Effexor was great at 300+ mg/day but I  had to take it every 4 hours. SJW was enough in the summer but I went back to  Prozac this fall – badddd crashing! Somedays you’re the pigeon, somedays you’re the statue. Lynn from North Dakota

[posted and emailed] Could I get a show of ppl. who have been rescued from depression successfully because of Prozac? Also I’d like to know how one decides if one can stop taking it? Many thanks.

i’m a partial success story.  i started paxil (AD in prozac class) when i was REALLY suicidal, and it saved my life many times. unfortunately, i was later diagnosed as bipolar type II (rapid cycling and/or hypomanic), and paxil makes me TOO manic occasionally.  so i have to change from paxil to another AD. but again, my life was saved several times with paxil. Prozac helped my depression, but not as well as zoloft, effexor, or serzone did. Patrick
