Hi Everyone! Weird side effect with flovent???
Question:
Hi- I’m fairly new to this whole thing. I’ve been on the Flovent 2 puffs in morning and evening and I’m doing much better but I’ve only been on it sice March 29th and I’m noticing that my hair is starting to fall out. Not in big gobs but like when I’m in the shower I notice it and when I blow dry my hair and I’m brushing it I get quite more in the brush. Kind of like after you have a baby and your hair starts shedding. Is this a flovent side effect? Maybe the beconase? It’s not too bad yet- but it’s kind of annoying- hopefully I won’t go bald. Yikes!!! Has anyone heard of this? If not- I guess I should check into seeing if my thyroid is all ok or something. Colleen
Response:
Daniel Hicks… Well- I did read the info packets and saw nothing about the hair issue. Even spoke to the pharmacist and they haden’t heard of it either. That’s why I thought I’d throw the question out to see if there might be ANYONE out there in cyberland that might have experienced the same thing. I’m figuring that it is just some hormonal thing or thyroid or something like that. The only reason I’m even suspecting the medication is that it’s new and so is the medicine which makes me suspicious. I like your hypochondriac line. I agree, It’s great to be a well informed hypochondriac. :) Colleen

One thing you should do is read the literature that comes with your medication. Most inhalers come with a fairly detailed data sheet that includes a list of the observed side-effects and their frequencies. I don’t know if shedding hair is one of the observed side-effects of Flovent, but likely if it is it is mentioned on that data sheet. By reading these data sheets you can anticipate problems and head them off. Of course, if you tend to be a hypochondriac then it could put all sorts of new ideas in your head, but at least you’ll be a well-informed hypochondriac.

I have been losing hair and just thought it was part of aging. Since this post I believe that my hair loss started around the time I started on Flovent. Just a thought but maybe it’s revelant.

Hiya – Have you also been taking prednisone or other steroids since taking Flovent, or have you ONLY been taking flovent?? I am experiencing hair loss, but I have also been steroid dependent for 3 years. From what I understand, even if you intermittently take steroids over time it can cause hair loss. If you havent been taking steroids at all, Im very surprised to hear that it could be caused by the Flovent. I thought taking meds through inhalers minimized the side effects for the most part. I would check with your doctor or the company. Life is uncertain – eat dessert first. Nancy 8=: )
Response:
Thanks everyone- I happened to be at my regular doctor’s today for my daughter and asked him about it and he said that it’s likely that 2 puffs in morn and night might be too much for me and he said to see if I can drop it to one each morn and night. He says that often times if you have too much of a medication it will cause this. He says if it doesn’t work he wants to do some test’s. I forgot to mention I’m using beconase too so maybe the two together are overkill since they both have steroids. In response to Nancy’s question. "I only did the prednisone tablets for a week after my anaphylactic reaction on the 17th but I know the stuff does build up in your system. Maybe it’s just a combination of everything. I guess I can live with it as long as I can breath and I don’t go bald. :)
Response:
I had no idea that prednisone could cause hair loss. I was recently on 12 days of prednisone and noticed that I was losing hair in the shower and the hair on my arms sort of went away. So this must have been from the prednisone! I also didn’t know that prednisone can make you sun sensitive. I was out in the sun for 3 hours several days after stopping the prednisone and really, really got fried. I am still peeling. How long do these side effects last??? Response:
Patrice I don’t know how long it last’s I’ve just heard that it builds up in your system over a period of time and it can cause immune problems. I’ve never been on prednisone until they made me take it for the anaphylactic reaction. Do other steroids like the inhalers, nasal sprays cause sun sensitivity or just prednisone? This is all so new to me I hope I get it figured out before the sun comes out. Colleen
Response:
Perhaps you are anxious and stressed out over the asthma. I lost 10 lbs when I was diagnosed because of stress. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi- I’m fairly new to this whole thing. No way! ME- Stressed? How could that possibly be???? I have 3 kids 4 and under, a yard full of weeds and I can’t eat chocolate or anything else good anymore. Do you really think that could be considered stressful???? :) Ha ha- Of course I’m stressed- I don’t know of anyone who isnt these days. At least I can exercise now without coughing- which should help in that dept. :) Oh- I’ve got it….. Here’s a theory… No chocolate? No peanuts? Hair loss! Bingo… All those people on rogaine should eat Reeses peanut butter cups instead. Colleen
Response:
Hi Colleen, I have been on Flovent and Nasacort (inhaler and spray) for over 1 1/2 years and haven’t experienced the sun sensitivity. I am a sun bunny so would like this to GO AWAY any time now. I was planning on hitting the coast this weekend, but can’t due to the peeling and lots of new pink skin there! Are you using an AeroChamber spacer with your Flovent MDI, rinsing and spitting out after inhaling? This can reduce side effects by a factor of 2 or more. Steroids should always be used in the minimum dose to control the problem. Inhaled steroids are typically 10% of less or oral steroids, since inhaled go directly to the lungs. Flovent comes in 3 strengths; 44, 110, & 220 mcg/puff. It’s true there is an additive effect to steroid side effects from oral inhalers [Flovent] and nasal spray [Beconase]. You might try Nasalcrom nasal spray, now OTC, to reduce or eliminate the Beconase. Nasalcrom [cromolyn] is very safe. In response to Nancy’s question. "I only did the prednisone tablets for a week after my anaphylactic reaction on the 17th but I know the stuff does build up in your system. Maybe it’s just a combination of everything. I guess I can live with it as long as I can breath and I don’t go bald. :)
Steroids are metablized within your system within hours but side effects can build up with long term use. Steroids are immunosuppressants, which can allow other diseases to flourish. I didn’t see hair loss specifically listed as a side effect of prednisone but there are lots of other side effects. PI on prednisone at http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/pred.htm prednisone Excerpts: "Adverse Reactions: Fluid and Electrolyte Disturbances: Sodium retention; Fluid retention; Congestive heart failure in susceptible patients; Potassium loss; Hypokalemic alkalosis; Hypertension Musculoskeletal: Muscle weakness; Steroid myopathy; Loss of muscle mass; Osteoporosis; Tendon rupture, particularly of the Achilles tendon; Vertebral compression fractures; Aseptic necrosis of femoral and humeral heads; Pathologic fracture of long bones Dermatologic: Impaired wound healing; Thin fragile skin; Petechiae and ecchymoses; Facial erythema; Increased sweating; May suppress reactions to skin tests" I doubt a low or medium dose of inhaled steroid would cause hair loss. If in doubt about Flovent, switch to Pulmicort, another excellent high strength inhaled steroid. [I use Pulmicort.] Ellis
Response:
Thanks Ellis. I do use an aero chamber and rince my mouth out every time. I think you’re right about the beconase. I would rather try cutting down on the beconase or trying something different than cutting down on the Flovent since it has made such a dramatic difference in my coughing episodes. I can deal with the itchyness of allergies but the coughing really sucks the energy from me. Colleen Oh- and thanks for the link too.
Response:
Thanks Patrice. At least I don’t have to worry about getting sunburned. I don’t really know why I’m so worried- I mean- Seattle isn’t the place to really get a tan. ;)

Hey There, I’ve been on Flovent 220 4 puffs twice a day for over two years now. I have had to take two fairly long courses of Pred 60mg for six weeks or more and then taper. I am a 48 year old man with that ole male pattern balding problem hair falling out since I was twenty. But with the steroids my hair is thicker and now I’m going much more body hair (back and chest) My beard is even going faster. I joked with my Doc last visit who needs Rogaine I got Flovent. So go figure I guess we are all a little in the way these meds effect us. God Bless, Norm

Abnormal hair growth is more likely attributed to Prednisone. Sheldon On a recent Night Court rerun, Judge Harry Stone had a wonderful line: "I try to keep an open mind, but not so open that my brains fall out."

Its possible. Be sure to wash his face after face mask is removed. (I assume you use a face mask, whether using the Turbuhaler with AeroChamber & facemask, or the nebulizer with face mask). Here’s a link on the Pulmicort Turbuhaler: http://www.rxmed.com/monographs/pulmico2.html Excerpt Adverse Effects: No major side effects attributable to the use of budesonide, in all dosage forms, have been reported. During clinical trials, the frequency of subjectively reported side effects was low. The most common side effects were cough, throat irritation, and hoarseness (2 to 4%). Bad taste, headache, nausea and dryness of the throat were reported less frequently. Other side effects reported on occasion during budesonide treatment were tiredness, thirst and diarrhea. Skin reactions (urticaria, rash, dermatitis, etc.) may, in rare cases, occur in association with local corticosteroid therapy." Here is a link for the nebulized version (not available in US): http://www.rxmed.com/monographs/pulmico.html Excerpt: "Adverse Effects: During clinical trials, the most common side effects were cough, throat irritation and hoarseness (2 to 4%). Bad taste, headache, nausea and dryness of the throat were reported less frequently. Other side effects reported on occasion during budesonide treatment were tiredness, thirst and diarrhea. Facial skin irritation has occurred in a few cases when a nebulizer with a face mask has been used. To prevent irritation, the facial skin should be washed after use of the face mask. Skin reactions (urticaria, rash, dermatitis, etc.) may, in rare cases, occur in association with local corticosteroid therapy." Ellis

It is not possible to use a Turbuhaler with an Aerochamber/mask. However, there is an MDI version of Pulmicort, which can be used with an aerochamber. There is also, as you say, the nebulizer version. The original poster may also want to investigate to see if something has changed in their child’s environment [e.g. new foods] to see if perhaps that is the cause of the rash. SW. Whoops, I forgot you can’t use an AeroChamber with a DPI. The original poster did email me; said his son doesn’t use a mask, just breathes thru the tube; so I don’t know if he was using the Turbuhaler version, the MDI version, or the nebulizer version. I told him any such effects would be dose-dependent; perhaps he could reduce the Pulmicort dose and use some steroid-sparing meds, like Intal, Tilade, TheoDur, Proventil tabs. Food allergies (eczema) are certainly a possibility. The Asthma Source book–new edition?
Question:
Many thanks for the info! Will check that website right away!

Does anyone know if this publisher runs early or late on publication dates and what sort of revisions were made? I am torn between getting what is available now and waiting for the revised edition.
Publication date for books are about as reliable as release dates for computer software. For both books and software I have taken the attitude: "I’ll believe it when I see it on the shelf."
Response:
When I went to my local bookstore to buy The Asthma Sourcebook (right title?) which I have often seen highly praised in this group, I was told a revised edition is due out in November of 1998–about 4 months down the road. The author of ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’, Francis Adams, MD, has a web site. His email address is there. You could try emailing him with that question. Let us know what he says. http://home.earthlink.net/~francisva/news.html The Asthma Sourcebook News The existing book is copyright ‘96 and seems consistent with the ‘97 Expert Panel Report 2 in most respects. I doubt the updates would be substantial–lists of new drugs released like Pulmicort and Singulair. But you can pick up some of this info from his website. Cost of existing book is only $16 (less than a canister of Ventolin) and some stores discount, like amazon.com His web site has a link that takes you to amazon.com Ellis

Lexapro: Tremor Side Effect
Question:
Hi, My neurologist (I’ve been diagnosed with a movement disorder — most likely a form of spinocerebellar ataxia) prescribed 10mg Lexapro to combat associated feelings of depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, it has made my essential tremor much worse. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any ideas for combatting this side effect? Thanks, Matt
SSRI’s can exacerbate movement disorders and even cause some (in rare cases). You might be better off with an antidepressant from the TCA group: imipramine ("Tofranil"), nortriptyline, amitryptyline, doxepin, clomipramine etc. Philip — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

I want to thank all of you for your responses. I talked to my neurologist and she switched me to Paxil. My tremor is much better (very close to its pre Lexapro level). Should things get worse, I have several strategies to try (beta blockers, TCA AD) thanks to this group! Matt — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Start at Lexapro 5 mg/day for awhile before you go up to 10 mg/day. Add a beta blocker such as Inderal or Tenormin for the essential tremor. Chip — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Well, in my experience, if you taper off of the drug, much the same as you slowly build up to a dose perscribed by your pdoc, you will experience less side effects. The reason why it seems like you are addicted is because your nervous system has become dependant on the drug, and if you were to just stop it, you will experience severe side effects for several months afterwards, which happened to me a few years ago. However, it’s not anywhere near as severe of an *addiction* as heroine or alcohol. Frost

Question:
Ok, so my doctor agreed to try another SSRI, but she wanted me to wean off Paxil first! Told her I could wean off one and wean onto another at the same time, but she was dubious about that so I asked her to look it up and ask around… now she agrees. She has prescribed Effexor.
Although Effexor technically is not an SSRI it is cross tolerant with SSRI’s so switching this way should be no problem. I’ve been told to take 20 mgs of paxil(instead of 40) and to add 37,5mgs of effexor for the next 3 days, then drop the paxil completely and raise the effexor to 75mgs. Does this sound about right? It seems like a fast changeover to me, but I’d rather deal with any side effects and get this change over with quickly myself anyway.
I agree that this may be a tad fast but I think it can be done if you are prepared to white-knuckle through some possible temporary side effects. My other question; is the target does of 75 mgs of effexor comparible to the 40 mgs of paxil I’ve been taking?
That is impossible to say as our reactions to meds are so personal. 75 mg of Effexor sound OK to me and if after a few weeks you feel it doesn’t work well enough you can always raise the dose a bit more. My xanax has been switched from 2x .5mg per day to 1x 1mg xanax XR per day. Hopefully it will stop me feeling like a yo-yo, I may need to ask for a dose increase I think.
I think so too considering the AD change. I take Xanax XR and IMO it is far preferable to *normal* Xanax. No rollercoatser effect anymore but a comparatively very smooth ride. Any thoughts/comments about this change in meds?
No

Response:
From what you say above, and below, Vashti, it doesn’t seem like she has a good grip on these medications, but at least is open minded. Both frustrating and refreshing at the same time!
well could be dangerous to be less savy about things one prescribes Yes, I think it’s far too fast and large a drop in Paxil,
I concur My biggest concern would be that sudden drop of Paxil from 40 to 20, with a "starter" dose of Effexor ( 37.5 mg ) to take the place of 20 mg of Paxil? I don’t think so!!
nope best off dropping paxil by 5mg a day per week until off Remember, they may be very slight, if much at all. So much depends on how ‘you’ react, not how some others have.
true 150 mg of Effexor to 40 mg of Paxil??
or more since paxil is up to 17 times more potent at the synapse then prozac effexor hits multiple sites at higher doses and is basicaly serotonergic at lower ones so a sliding conversion may not be too bad-as a phenethylamine compound it excerts reuptake inhibition on serotonin first noradrenaline second and weakly dopaminergic thirdly so in some ways in works like a tca but in reverse where the tca hits adrenergic sites first serotonin sites second. it would be somewhat difficult to make a comparative dose per dose response due to the different pharmacokinetics and individual responses From what I understand, the XR should work out very well.
yes it would bot Rita and Philip use this med with good success You’re not alone..

I need a new drug. Help!
Question:
I have been taking seroxat/paxil for some years now, but it seems to have stopped working, and anyway it messes up my sexual response. I did try Prozac for a short while but it made me manic and insomniac. Any recommendations would be welcome.
I used seroxat for mere months and besides the sexual sideeffects I also suffered from insomnia. Even so much that Dalmadorm 30 mg did not help. It gave me a shallow restless and short sleep of perhaps 3 to 4 hours. Perhaps prozac would work better for me.
Response:
The best person to ask, obviously, would be your doctor or your psychiatrist. Personally, I was on Paxil for 4 years (if I remember correctly) and then suddenly got very depressed at the beginning of this year. Unfortunatly antidepressants can "poop out" on some people, which is what happened to me, and likely you. My shrink switched me to Zoloft (sertraline) because it is helpful for anxiety as well as depression, like Paxil. I’ve never had sexual problems on either drug so I’m not sure if Zoloft is as bad as Paxil for that, but I’d definitely mention the sexual side-effects when you see your doc. Good luck! This suprised me because it was thumping like a wild think while I was in the waiting room! He doubled up my dose of Zoloft to 50mg and gave me some more ativan. Thank God for ativan it seems to be the only thing that is keeping me sane these days. Oh also I am off work for at least another month. *Phew* I was worried about that because I am just not ready to go back there yet. I had a nice surprise visit from my brother tonight (who has only been to my place twice before in the past 8 years). It was a really pleasant visit. I really like him but we have never had a close relationship. I told the doctor that I had a good day on Sunday but then relapsed on Monday and ever since. He saw that as a good sign. At least I had one good day. I really like him, he is our new family doctor and I only started seeing him when I got this bought of PA he seems pretty thorough.
Dear Nancy, I`m glad to hear that your doctor visit went well. I agree with your doctor that your good day even though it was followed by a setback, is a good thing. You can`t have a setback unless you had made some progress to begin with. The 50 mg increase in your Zoloft dose is a big increase at one time for a person with an anxiety disorder. Just wanted to point that out in case your anxiety or side-effects increase a bit during the next few days. Make sure to use your Ativan during this period. Take care

It’s pretty similar to Prozac in many respects but for some people the *initial* side-effects seem to be a bit more dramatic. It has a much shorter half-life than Prozac which means that a week after you stop taking it, the drug will leave your body – Prozac can stay around for much longer. There isn’t too much difference between the 2 drugs. Gareth.

Paxil helped me a lot more than Prozac ever did. The only bad problem I have ever had with Paxil is when I get a hair up my ass and decide not to take my medicine any more and tried to wean off of it.
