Why do I feel like this?
Question:
I stopped taking my asthma medications altogether 2 weeks ago, the reason being is because I would simply just forget to take my inhalers, I know it wa a foolish thing to do but i didnt want to go through the same terrible side effects all over again. But since I stopped taking them, Ive felt very jittery like my heart is racing, and I have pain in my chest which wakes me up at night. Not only that but I wake up sometimes with slight bruising that seems to fade away as soon as I start moving my limbs. If I cut myself or bump my leg, I will bruise very easily. Iwant to take my medicine but Im scared of the side effects, is it possible that IF you stop taking your medicine very abruptly, you can get a chest infection or get sick?? I whole heartedly appreciate your responses. Im trying to find a new doctor also because I one I have isnt a nice person. CORAL
Response:
Hi Sue, I was taking Serevent and Flovent two puffs each twice daily, I just came from the Emergency room and the doctors checked me out. I had a physical and had my heart monitored. The doctor on call said that my heart palps were under 100 which is good and I seem to be in relatively good health, I wasnt weazing or having an attack. He also said that my type of asthma is not severe enough to be put on a permanent flovent/serevent regimend. Which is probably why I am feeling jittery along with the pain. His motto is if its not broke dont fix it and I whole heartedly agree with him. I dont have attacks unless Im exposed to something Im allergic to like dander or peanuts. I was finally happy to know that it was the medicine that was causing these feelings. And Now Im just going to carry the proventil with me on an as need basis. And FIND A NEW DOCTOR. CORAL

What medications were you taking? Was one of them an oral steroid? Your symptoms are not good, you need to be checked out ASAP by a doctor. Sue Official Secretary of OSGSL Dogs think they’re human Cats think they’re God

Did they do a pulmonary function test? IMHO, they can’t determine how serious your asthma is without it. Make sure you keep the proventil with you at all times and use it the second you feel tight. And DO see a good doctor. Ask around, someone should be able to recommend one. If you don’t like that doctor, don’t be afraid to change. I had two different family doctors before I found the best one in the area. And he has done wonders for my asthma. Sue CORAL

singulair working (I think)
Question:
I took it for about 6 weeks and all I got were headaches. My doctor just prescribed Singulair for my asthama. I was looking forward to taking it to see if it would help, until I read the information sheet from the pharmacy. There are alot of potenital side effects, and it kind of spooked me. Anyone else have any side effects, besides nightmares and headaches? Thanks!
The ONLY side effect I had from taking Singulair, was being a little more emotional than normal. I have always been a sensitive person, but I would cry at a commercial if it was sentimental at all. Silly, isn’t it? Well, once I got on Zoloft (part of my migraine prevention routine), my emotional state has returned to normal. Just my 2 cents..Good Luck, I hope Singulair works well for you! *hugs* Ash
Response:
I asked my doctor about taking the Singulair in the morning and he thought it would be ok. He asked the rep. and they didn’t know why it was to be a night time dose. I can tell that it is working because I only need my rescue inhaler a few times a week instead of every day. I do not like the weird dreams so I will cont. to take in the morning until I receive a "good" reason why I should take in the night. Pam.

From the Singular web page: Like all prescription drugs, SINGULAIR may cause side effects. In studies, side effects usually have been mild. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking SINGULAIR. The list below is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with SINGULAIR. Your doctor can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects. The side effects in patients treated with SINGULAIR were similar in type and frequency to side effects in patients who were given a placebo (a pill containing no medication). Some of the side effects reported in studies included: tiredness fever abdominal (stomach) pain stomach or intestinal upset (gastroenteritis) heartburn dizziness headache rash Additionally, the following have been reported: allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing, hives, and itching; dream abnormalities, drowsiness, irritability, and restlessness. A condition, which includes a combination of certain persistent or worsening symptoms, has been reported rarely in patients given SINGULAIR. These symptoms may include: a flu-like illness, rash, pins and needles or numbness of arms or legs, and severe sinusitis. These have occurred usually, but not always, in patients whose oral corticosteroid medicine for asthma is being reduced. Although SINGULAIR has not been shown to cause this condition, you must tell your doctor immediately if you experience a combination of these symptoms. Remember, anytime you have a medical problem you think may be related to SINGULAIR, talk to your doctor. Tim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Then that’s what it is! I just started having bizarre dreams — sometimes nightmares — about a month ago. And it did start about a week or so after I started the Singulair. The Singulair is definitely helping me. I don’t feel like I have a bad chest cold all of the time anymore (yeah!). And I’ve been waking up at least twice every night for about 3 years now, so I guess I can live with the nightmares. I’ll ask my doctor about it the next time I see him. Thanx! Regarding nightmares: I think I read in a magazine ad (the part on the back of the ad that contains all the technical information about a drug) that Singulair can cause vivid dreams. You may want to discuss this rare side-effect with your doctor. I regularly have vivid dreams, I did both before and after going on Singulair last spring, but I have noticed an increase in the frequency of these dreams, rarely bad, since starting the med. Because I am used to the dreams anyway, they don’t bother me. Anyone else notice this when they started Singulair?

Singulair is considered to ba a very safe medication. The trick when looking for side effects is to compare the medication side effects with the placebo side effects. The difference in the rates of the side effects suggest the likelihood of an actual side effect of the medication. No electrons were harmed in the posting of this message.

My doc switched me from Singulair to Accolate because I experienced numbness in my extremities and lips (of all places!) plus I was really disoriented when taking it. Sort of spaced out feeling. I’m looking to add a fender deluxe reverb to my arsenal. I need something that can be cranked but not wake the neighbors in the next county. I thought a DR would be a good choice if only that it is about one third the power of my HRD 212. So does anyone have any insight as to what would be a good choice? A champ is definitely not an alternative. I already have one for practice. I Any rebuttles, coments, or whatever. I am only pestering y’all because I dont have a decent music shop in my area to try out some amps.
Response:
Hello Derek, Since you have an amp that meets your apparent needs for gigging and jamming with friends, and you have a Champ for home practice, I’d recommend a good quality overdrive pedal so that you can get your edge, overdrive and sustain at lower amp volume. The volume controls work both ways, and if your Fender Deville is loud enough for your higher volume needs, why not turn the amp volume control down, set the amp up for clean, and use an overdrive pedal to give you sustain and edge? AnalogMike is a good source for TS – 9 pedals. I favor the Barber Electronics pedals like the Tone Pump and the Burn Unit myself. To my mind you don’t gain a whole lot by a Deluxe, unless you decide that you like the tone and sound of the amp. You can turn your Deville down and you have options to increase sustain and overdrive through a pedal. If you just plain want to buy another amp, go for it and experiment. Of course, what do I know – I’m a Marshall guy (grin…). Maybe something to consider is whether or not your Deville will allow an extension cab; if so, you may want to consider looking at something like a Dr. Z amp and using your Deville speakers until you can find a 2 x 12 cab that might work both for the Dr. Z amp or as an extension cab for the Deville. I’ve heard very little negative about Dr. Z amps and a lot of positive stuff; never played one myself but people who I respect have posted here that they really enjoy their Dr. Z amps. Might give you another sound to your tone palette and something different from your Fender. Good luck to you in your search; enjoy your music! Walk in Beauty, Peace. 1/3 the power is barely like 10 db quieter. ANYTHING you push to compression/distortionis going to disturb the neighbors unless you pad out a closet to keep the sound in. the Fender Blues Junior is a great small amp, but STILL is going to cut some sound. Even a pignose pushed is louder than a TV set turned up loud enough to bother neighbors. A screaming guitar amp makes a lot of noise. Then you need to get to travel to one or more. My opinion is that these lesser-power needs are better served (and play better as well) through sand-state amps.

As a low-cost alternative, consider hooking your Champ up to a small cabinet. The tone will improve 1,000% over the stock 8" speaker. I plug my Champ into a 4 Ohm, 2 x 12" cabinet and find it loud enough to lead a small group when cranked, but not too loud as to wake up the old lady next door at 5. The tone is wonderful, too. IMO, a Champ and a 2×12" is a hard combination to beat for practice.
Response:
I have a homebrew champ with 4 and 8 ohm taps on the OPT. I switch to 8 ohms when I want to use the 4 x 10 Marshall cab. Very cool but very directional. With the open back 10" Celestion in the amp it’s much "fuller" and quieter. I also put the Marshall cab under my ‘71 SFDR occasionally. The Fender has a weber P12N and sounds great. Then add the 4 x 10 and woo hoo! Have you tried running the Champ thru the speakers in the HR? Is the HR 4 ohms total? You may want reverb here. I use an electronic reverb with the "Champ" (and the Harmony H415 I re-built.) . The H415 has 2 el84 and 2 x 12" Jensen C12R speakers. Raw and meaty. see details: http://www.geocities.com/jjsant/harmony.html To actually answer your question. I would by an early SF. 1967/8 with the metal trim around the edge. I have seen a few beautiful ones on ebay. If you don’t want to spend the extra $ for the more collectable ones, get a 1977 or sooner with NO push pull. Those are evil and will cause negative vintage ju ju. JJman
Response:
Jny Vee- I was going to say more or less what you already said as I think you are correct in everything you wrote. As a DRRI owner, I can’t use it in my own house, with no neighbors to worry about, past 4 or 5 on the volume without blowing my own eardrums out. So I just thought I’d help with an understanding of one trivial fact, which, unfortunately, doesn’t help the original poster but may throw a little light on the subject. You wrote, "1/3 the power is barely like 10 db quieter". Actually, I think it’s a lot LESS than 10db. Each 3db is a halving of power. So, a reduction from 60 watts to 30 watts is only 3db. To get to 6db quieter, you’d have to go down to 15w. At 22 w, the DR is probably only around 4-5db quieter than his 60w amp. I think, if I recall correctly, that 1db is a change that is just barely perceptible to the human ear. And that’s probably why he will have trouble finding any amp to fill that particular need.

Hello John, (Heh heh….) Thanks for your reply. Yeah, like you need to hear more about the amp that defines non-wimpy rock and blues (grin…). Seems like you own several Marshalls yourself, if memory serves me correctly. I’ve played a lot of amps, and my `74 SL half stack still defines (to me…) the holy grail of tone and sound, and I "got it." If I never purchased another amp in this life-time (may all our life-times be long and healthy and fun) I’d not feel like I was missing anything. I read posts about guys striving to find the tone and sound that does it for `em, and sure – I spent a lot of time and energy doing the same thing. The SL was "the amp" that I was looking for, and then when I had an excellent amp tech set it up for me, that was what took a great amp and made it incredible to me. Growing up in the midwest of the USA (I’m 51) we didn’t know much about fine-tuning amps via an amp tech – we plugged in and if it sounded decent, we ran with it. It was Fender-land and I couldn’t get the amps to do what I wanted. Kudos to all the Fender guys on this NG; just not my line of amps. This excellent newsgroup helped educate me to the extent that I eventually understood what a good amp tech could do with a great amp, and the proof is my SL. Louder than blazes when I want it to be, cleans up well when I roll the guitar volume down, interacts very well with a quality overdrive pedal, and is such fun to play. When I got the amp back from the tech, I had that same experience that many players do when they have "the right amp" for their needs – I played for hours and had so much fun, it was hard to stop playing. Well, I guess I "did" say something about my SL (grin….) after all. How are your Marshalls doing, John? Got a fav that you look forward to playing? Best wishes across the big pond; our family had a great Thanksgiving today and I’m finally feeling like I won’t explode or anything. An incredible buffet at one of our fancier hotels locally, and we didn’t have to do any dishes after we were done. Just paid the bill and walked, or rather, rolled and listed and tilted to side to side. Wow, what a feast. Then to top it off, I got several hours of playing a Les Paul into an old Silvertone combo (model 1472, in almost mint shape), and got most of my guitar fix done today. Walk in Beauty, Peace. Thanks Scott.. My Marshalls are doing great! I’ve got 4 Marshalls (the Park45 included) and I’ve got a hard time choosing
My favorites now are my ‘66 Park45 (actually a JTM45, currently running 6L6 tubes) for blues and my ‘72 50W Marshall 1987 (EL34’s) for rock. I currently ‘rediscovered’ my Les Paul, it sounds great with the 50 Watter. I’m using an Alessandro Muzzle power-attenuator with those. The Muzzle sounds very transparent, it’s a great for controling the volume of a non-MV amp in various situations (home & clubs). I can recommend a good attenuator (if you get tired of schlepping your ingenius baffle with your patented soundpads
). My ‘66 Super Bass is now being restored, it’s going to be very different from my Super Lead. I’ve discussed with my amp-tech that I wanted to go a different route with this amp (no need for two nearly identical sounding amps). The Super Bass is going to be voiced a bit darker with a looser feel and earlier brake-up than my Super Lead (which is tight, punchy and rather clean sounding…. but what a sound!
). I’ve also made a treble-booster (with a nifty rotatable-switch to select different input-caps) and a clean-boost (fullrange boost like your Micro-Amp). So I’m fooling around with them aswell… To make it short: I’m not bored and having a great time mixing and matching guitars/amplifiers and effects… Hmm… I’ve got to work on my technique a bit more
Cheers, John.

Very strange. What a wonderful assortment of Marshalls you’ve got, John! That was a cool picture you sent me of the band you play in; you ought to post that for the AGA guys to see. I’m kind of thinking the same thing regarding my `69 Park 75. I don’t want a copy of my already great Super Lead. Perhaps just to take the amp to it’s full potential and be able to "hear" it’s voice and tone will be enough. I know that it’s not operating at it’s peak, nor has a good tech gone through it yet. One of my many projects that await the finances to do `em. Re-fretting my Tele is another project that I’ve got to do. Putting new speakers in an old hand-made 4 x 12 cab I used on the road in the early 70’s is another – several years ago I strengthened the internal construction of the cab and it’s now ready for some speakers, so I’ll eventually have two 4 x 12 cabs for my Super Lead. And getting two more Bill Lawrence pickups for my Strat; the bridge pickup he did for me is really fine and it really sings at stage volume. Oh yeah; when I win the lotto, I’m buying a local club just so that I’ve got a place to play loud and invite a few friends in for beverages. You get to do quite a bit when you’re the house band and you own the place (grin….). Just got to have that winning ticket first. Don Evans, who posts on AGA, just told me in another thread about a new compressor pedal that Dave Barber ("Tone Pump," "Burn Unit", and others) is working on. Don and I are favorably impressed with Barber’s work, and with his ear. www.barberelectronics.com . Glad you’re doing some work with your Les Paul. The LP/Marshall combination is a hard one to beat. Hey, I wanted to ask you if you ever use several of your Marshalls in a multi-amp rig, and if so – how do you like the sound and tone? Thanks for your reply, John. I hope you and your band are having fun and creating interesting and entertaining music. Have a great week. Walk in Beauty, Peace. Scott – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well, I guess I "did" say something about my SL (grin….) after all. How are your Marshalls doing, John? Got a fav that you look forward to playing? Best wishes across the big pond; Thanks Scott..

LOL. Don’t worry about the hairloss. I’ve never heard of SSRIs causing hairloss. Of the ones you listed I would pick fluoxetine because (I’m assuming you’re in the U.S.), it’s the cheapest – you can get generic fluoxetine now because Eli Lilly’s patent has run out. None of them are necessarily better than any other, but they have slightly different side-effect profiles. Zoloft was very friendly side-effects wise for me, so you may want to consider that. However because it has a short half-life, you may get withdrawals (I did). I don’t think anyone has got withdrawals from fluoxetine because of its very long half life. I would leave Effexor as a second option if the SSRI stops working, or doesn’t work at all. It has very bad withdrawals from what I’ve read. And it seems it’s extremely expensive over there (correct me if I’m wrong). — Regards, .

Question:
My doc put me on a beta blocker she seems to think it will help. Bringing my heart rate down some. Has anyone been on this and has it helped at all?
Response:
Julie– I have mitral valve prolapse, and the first drug I was put on to control my symptoms (the most irritating being heart palipations and a racing heart) was a beta-blocker. It did help but, since I have blood pressure in the normal to a-little-bit-low range, it ended up lowering my blood pressure to the point where I was feeling light-headed a lot. For a while I counteracted that by eating salty foods, but eventually I went onto anti-anxiety meds (Xanax and Zoloft), which, for me, are actually more effective and have caused me far fewer side effects. But, except for the blood pressure issue (mine went down to like 90/60 at one point, which will make you feel really, really faint), it wasn’t bad. Lori
Response:
Hi, I took a beta blocker for several years for my anxiety – however it was started at the same time I officially started the anti-depressant I currently take. It is difficult for me to determine how much each helped to control my symptoms. I do know that prior to the beta blocker I did experience a hard pounding heart beat when I would lay down at night, which was very anxiety provoking. The beta blocker did ease that for me. For myself, the beta blocker was a part of a combination of meds to help manage my PD, not the only thing I was taking for it. Debbie

Trembles, Twitches, Tricyclics & Alchohol
Question:
writes: You shouldn’t drink on meds at all.
This isn’t necessarily true (unless you’re an alcoholic of course, in which case you probably shouldn’t drink at all, meds or no meds), but it’s probably better not to drink on meds if the combination seems to cause bad side effects. Also, it’s important to keep your drinking moderate; if you have trouble limiting how much you drink, talk to your doctor about it. There are prescription drugs that are very dangerous to mix with alcohol (e.g., the barbiturates), but these are not used for panic and anxiety today. One thing that can happen, especially with tricyclics, is they can increase the effects of alcohol, so it’s like you’re drinking much more. The shaking and twitching the morning after drinking sounds like maybe a "rebound" effect from when the alcohol wears off. So anyway, you might want to try limiting it to one drink (i.e., one beer or one glass of wine) a night and see if that helps. If it doesn’t, try half a drink. If that doesn’t work, try no drinking at all. It’s a shame to have to make these changes in our lives but if it’s for your health, it’s worth it, right? I had twitches ("fasciculations") when I was taking Nardil, and a couple of meds including Nardil (and some of the tricyclics) have exacerbated my essential tremor. They’re common side effects and don’t mean that you’re brain damaged or anything.

Response:
Hi I have been on Tricyclics (Dothiepin) for about 8 weeks now and am troubled by a slight tremble and occasional twitches. This seems to be worsened the day after I have had something to drink. It also seems to be worse during the day. Now I can’t be sure if these are just my anxiety symptoms or the medication or the combination of meds and alchohol. Either way, I never used to twitch! Has anyone had similar experiences with Tricyclics?
I don’t know about Dothiepin, but the package insert for my amitriptyline (another tricyclic) states definitely that one should not drink while on the medication. I developed some twitching when I was on Paxil. I still experience it occasionally. My doctor isn’t sure whether it’s a side effect, a result of my tension, or a combination of both. Either way, I don’t like it; one of the chief focuses of my anxiety is my health, especially that of my brain. I had the worst time earlier in the year trying to convince myself that, no, I did _not_ have Jakob- Creuzfeldt disease (the human version of "mad cow disease," bovine spongiform epilepsy). Every time I twitch, or have the slightest lapse in memory, I fret about it. Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Question:
Hey Melissa, I agree with everybody else that the "Prozac turns people into axe murderers" thing is a lot of hype. Some people do get worse on antidepressants – it happened to me on Wellbutrin (though a lot of that may have just been the natural course of the illness). But if you were one of these people, you’d know it! In regard to people who became violent/suicidal on antidepressants, they and their relatives claimed that they had no prior history of violence/suicidality, but to the best of my knowledge, closer examination revealed that they did have histories. One other thing – if this helps any, the sleepwalking/axe-murdering (or whatever it was) story involved a person on *Halcion*, not an antidepressant. -elizabeth

Melissa, relax. Most of these claims are a lot of ::insert favourite expletive here:: Some have been spread by a particular organisation that has it’s own ideas about how psychological disorders should be treated (giving them lots a money, in the main) and some lawyers have tried to implicate them as being responsible for their client’s crimes. However, the only one that may be applicable is that some people on SSRIs have committed suicide. So have a lot of people that were not taking SSRIs. The fact is that many, if not most, were taking SSRIs because they were at risk. I’m one of those that cannot handle the effects of SSRIs – I get really wired on them, but I’ve never found that they have lead me to do something I wouldn’t normally contemplate. One the assumption that your cellar isn’t already stacked to the ceiling with the remains of your victims, after 4 weeks your should be reasonably safe! :-^) Ian BTW-If you suddenly get the urge to commit henious acts apon *Moat Monsters* then up the Zoloft dose and give me a call! <VVVBEG

Hi Melissa! Don’t worry! You’re definitely *not* going to sleepwalk and axe murder little kids. (There, I said it
) These stories *are* political indeed and if the odd criminal happened to be on an antidepressant that doesn’t mean that the antidepressant was the cause of his acts. Hi Melissa, I can quarantee that we will not be hearing about you in the news, because you commited some despicable act<G. I think this all stems from the Prozac rumours. I am sure on very rare occassion, someone on Prozac killed themselves, but can we say for sure that the Prozac made them do it? I don`t think so. And there a few people who had bad reactions on Prozac, but you can have a bad reaction on any med there is. I am a med phobic, and if I felt there was any truth to what you fear, I would never had gone on it. I am fine, and nothing happened to me. And being you have been on Zoloft 4 weeks, the side-effects you have now, are it…..and they should start diminishing. You are going to be fine, stop worrying and enjoy how well you are feeling on the Zoloft…..that is what Zoloft is suppose to do, not make you crazy. Take Care!! I also work out 5-6 times a week in the mornings at the gym as I’ve tended to gain weight with any of the meds in the past and I didn’t want to go that route again. It also helps a lot with the everyday stress and gives me exposure to the rapid heart rate….rapid breathing symptoms, which I’m hoping will eventually help me prevent relapse once this goes into remission again. take care, Lene
Well, I’ll probably have to take it in the morning then, or at least with my dinner around 7pm. If I eat much later, I feel queasy when I go to bed. I need to start working out again. I don’t have a weight problem but I am noticing a growing flab problem! Exercise was my salvation when I had PA’s 10 years ago, but now I’ve developed a bit of a phobia–also, I suspect tied to the rapid heart rate, sweating, etc. BTW, the doc wants me to start out on 25 mg for a week then increase to 50mg where I’ll stay if the drug is successful. Is 25 mg a low enough dose to start? Should I ask him for a lower dose? I only weigh about 112, although I have a friend who doesn’t even tip the scales at 100 lbs and she started at 50 mg with no problem. Ever more questions. Iris —

BTW, though you said you take it at night. Do you eat dinner late or do you take it with a snack? If I started to eat my dinner at 9pm I would not only have bad indigestion, I’d probably weigh about 10 pounds more than I do now! Hi Iris,
I do both. I used to eat late dinners when I worked until 9pm so I could eat with my husband in the past. For me, this was never a big deal. Okay, after taking Zoloft for the first time last night, I felt so wired up today. How long are the side effects going to take? Why do some people have more side effects at first than others? PS make sure you eat with it. I noticed a BIG difference in severity of side effects depending on whether I had a full stomache or not.
Good advice Lene. I’m still working on starting my Zoloft (sigh…) and the reason I was leaning toward taking it at breakfast was to lessen the side effect possibility. I’ve had this reaction with several other drugs. If I take them with food (if it’s an option), I always tolerate them better. I’m not a scientist, but I think food slows the absorbtion rate, so your body can better adjust. BTW, though you said you take it at night. Do you eat dinner late or do you take it with a snack? If I started to eat my dinner at 9pm I would not only have bad indigestion, I’d probably weigh about 10 pounds more than I do now! Iris —

<snipped for space I’m not a doctor but I do believe that, while there is a possibility that you are experiencing a reaction to Zoloft, it’s an infinitessimal one. Most likely you have hyped yourself up over it with anticipation. ISTM a little too early for any reaction at all, good or bad… Sad to say, we anxiety types do this all too easily

Side effects with zoloft at first are extremely common. I’ve been on it for 10 weeks, My side effects lasted about four weeks. However, my husband who is also on zoloft for chronic pain management had few side effects and none of the ones that I did. I found that I had to work a bit with the time I took it, to manage the side effects better at first. Some people are just more sensitive to meds. Myself included. I usually have side effects to everything. Try and keep in mind that that the side effects are a temporary situation and well worth getting through in order to give it a chance and see if this is the answer for you. PS make sure you eat with it. I noticed a BIG difference in severity of side effects depending on whether I had a full stomache or not. take care Lene

Is it kind of a Riddlin effect. Kids who take it and don’t need it tend to react to it differently and get hyped up. and whereas kids who need the medication the most feel the effect immediately. mmm. in that case is it true that if you’re feeling overanxious when initially using Zoloft that you’re closer to healthy than you are sick? just a hopeful thought

Hismanal FDA Warning Feb 9 '98
Question:
The FDA has issued a new warning on the nonsedating antihistamine Hismanal. See FDA Talk Paper: "T98-5 Ivy Fleischer Kupec: 301-827-6242 Feb. 9, 1998 Broadcast Media: 301-827-3434 Consumer Inquiries: 800-532-4440 IMPORTANT NEW SAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT HISMANAL FDA today is warning consumers and health care providers about new safety information regarding the prescription antihistamine Hismanal (astemizole). This warning is being issued in conjunction with the addition of more information in the product label about cardiovascular adverse events, new potentially serious drug interactions and rare reports of anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction. The following can be used to answer questions: Hismanal is associated with risks of death due to irregular heart rhythms when taken with certain other drugs and when used at higher than the recommended labeled dose. The new labeling provides information about a specific warning against simultaneously using Hismanal with other types of drugs such as the hypertension drug, Posicor (mibefradil dihydrochloride), and the antibiotics, Biaxin (clarithromycin) and TAO (troleandomycin). The new labeling also provides additional precautions against using Hismanal with a number of other drugs. These include: HIV protease inhibitors such as Crixivan (indinavir), Norvir (ritonavir), Invirase (saquinavir) and Viracept (elfinavir); serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Luvox (fluvoxamine), Zoloft (sertraline), Serzone (nefazodone) and Paxil (paroxetine); and the antiasthma medication Zyflo (zileuton). Additionally, the label now recommends that Hismanal should not be taken with grapefruit juice. These recommendations are based on the potential of these drugs and grapefruit juice to interfere with the body’s handling and metabolism of Hismanal. The new labeling also emphasizes that patients with liver disorders should not take Hismanal. The new labeling is designed to give health care providers and consumers who use Hismanal the latest available information about these risks. In the event of Hismanal-related adverse events, health care providers are urged to contact the manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals One-to-One Customer Action Center at 1-800-JANSSEN (526-7736) or FDA MedWatch at (phone) 1-800-FDA-1088, (fax) 1-800-FDA-1078 or (mail) FDA, HF-2, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857. #### "

Thanks for the Warning, I already new about the Grapefruit juice. I just started Hismanal a few months ago. Doesn’t do much for the itchy eyes, but it dries the heck out of my nose and mouth.
