Discontinued Medication

Question:

Thanks to all who responded on my Tilade problem-especially Bill Ellis Fleemore.  I have my medication on the way-thank goodness.  Seems like my mail-order pharmacy had the medicine discontinued when all that happened was another company had bought out the originial manufacturers.  After calling the new manufacturer, they called the pharmacy and sent the Tilade to them.  I had been trying to reduce my Tilade without much success and was really wondering just how I was going to do without any.  My doctor had tried to take me off of it 3 yrs ago to no avail so both he and I were quite concerned that my asthma was going to get out of control again.  Now I don’t have to worry about that!- Pam in TN

Response:

Judy- I can certainly say that I did not expect to here my mail order pharmacy to say that Tilade is no longer available either.  With the help of Ellis in this group, I was able to talk to the manufacturer today and found out that they have temporary stopped the old formula and are waiting for a new one that has already passed trials in Europe.  So it looks like that the new version will be available in the US but they could not give me a definite date.  So I am still looking for some of the old stuff and they are also helping me out there too. I have one canister left so I hope that I can get something worked out within 17 days before this one runs out.- Pam in TN

Response:

I found out this week that one of my mainstay medications is no longer available in the US thanks to that darn little law that was passed earlier regarding the propellants used in the inhalers.  Well, my Tilade has bit the dust-along with my treatment plan that has had me in control since 1993!  My plan was 2 puffs of Tilade 3 times a day and 2 sprays twice a day of FLovent 220.  My pulmonary physician has told me that we will have to try to find another plan that will work since there is no substitution on the market for the Tilade. Pam in TN

– The drug manufacturers have enough CFC’s to last for several years.   There should not be a problem getting Tilade if you check with a few pharmacies.  We have plenty of it in New York. Response:

I have to admit that I need to grumble a little bit and felt like here was the place to do it. Until now, I never realized that my health would be at the hands of someone that knows absolutely nothing about me or my disease-just the "bottom" line boardroom tactics.  It is frustrating enough to have to deal with the uncertainties of the disease but I was always comfortable knowing that my medications were keeping it under control.  Now I have to go back to sqare one again- Pam in TN

Response:

Dosn’t Tilade and Intal have the same propellant ? So if one has been chucked shouldn’t the other one follow suit ? But I was under the understanding this was not going to happen until suitable replacements were available.

Pam in TN I forwarded your post to Francis Adams, MD, author of the comprehensive asthma book ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’. Here is his response. "Dear Ellis: Tilade definitely has not been discontinued. I think you must be right that they are bringing out a new formulation, probably with HFA instead of CFC. That means that they won’t supply any more of the current formula and will hopefully ship the new one soon. In terms of finding the original formula, I think it depends on the individual pharmacy and what they have in stock.  I will try to find out more on Monday from the manufacturer. Good luck, Francis V. Adams, M.D." Here are some references to the manufacturer. Question:

Hi, Has anyone heard of anxiety being a side effect with Palomar?  I’ve been taking it for a week, and I was so tense today, I couldn’t think.

Response:

Dear  Shwrcurtai      take good care of you Hope someone can help you out. Hold tight things will eventually level out take good care of YOU Always Sunshine Aries

Response:

Do you mean Pamelor (Nortriptyline)? I am also on that, 100mgs per day. I haven’t had anxiety as a side effect though. I think it is actually supposed to calm anxiety. Its has for me anyhow. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. I’m starting to feel like an expert on the stuff! I can also recommend some sites that are useful too if you are interested. While I’m on inhaled and now intrnasal steroids, I’m eating a banana a day for breakfast along with other fresh fruits of the season.  A good way to get potassium naturally. Sue M.

Yes, most fruits are loaded with potassium. For those unfamiliar with it, this website has an immense amount of info on food nutrients and compositions: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl Hope it is of some use. pavane – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – While I’m on inhaled and now intrnasal steroids, I’m eating a banana a day for breakfast along with other fresh fruits of the season.  A good way to get potassium naturally. These are known side-effects of these meds.  There are other medications which may, or may not, have lesser effects.  If they are enough to bother you, I would have a chat with my doctor about trying something else. Hi I drink a glass of orange juice daily and it keeps the cramping away and also drink it with the Calcium in it too.So when I miss a few days like maybe 4 or 5 I get the cramping back so try the orange juice and see how it works for you.Leona

For all of us who are allergic to oranges . . . the potassium in the OJ is what is helping with the cramping.  Any good source of potassium should help. Chris Owens

Response:

Its common that beta-2-Mimetika in high dosis can reduce the potassium-in blood.  Also someone can react sensitive for Serevent but not for another. Try and error.Ask your physician. Lothar

Response:

I’ve had a lot of problems with cramping too.  In fact today it may have been the worst it has ever been in my feet.  It was unbelievable.  Besides my feet my hands cramp and contort into weird shapes.  My neck cramps and sometime the cramp spreads from one side to the other.  I’ve had blood tests done to find out if I was getting enough minerals.  Everything was fine except my creatine level was high.  I was told by my doctor that I shouldn’t take Potassium because then my level would be too high.  I already take a multivitamin, a calcium pill and an iron pill.  I just wish I could get the cramps to stop.

Please go back to your doctor and get your creatine tested again.  If it is still high, ask him to investigate the possibility that you have muscular dystrophy.  Cramping such as you describe is a common symptom of several of the adult-onset varieties. Chris Owens

I started using serevent and flovent in January and during the last 2 months have been experiencing severe calf and foot cramps.  I had blood tests done which revealed no abnormalities in my electrolytes(?) which I was told could indicate potassium depletion.    I have also used predisone twice during that period so I have no idea which med is causing the problem.  I started taking potasssium, calcium and vitimen E (my vitimen bible recommends this for cramps) and have had no further problems.  Fingers crossed.  It’s interesting that the "authorities" don’t want to acknowledge that the meds could/can have side affects that they haven’t heard about.  Niasha Vivian wrote I have been diagnosed with asthma for almost a year now. Have to cut the message because of length, but I find this very interesting, and am quite sure the inhaled steroids could cause this. I have never had this muscle stuff until going on inhaled steriods. The few postings I have seen of people who had muscle cramps and think it is related to serevent are usually on inhaled steriods also. I think the headaches and diziness are from serevent, but mixed with the inhaled steroids could cause the cramps perhaps. I am on two puffs twice a day of Pulmicourt, is this a high dose??  I am new to asthma and dont really know how to judge a high dose.  I am going to try the potassium though (got some at the drug store on the way home).  I will let you all know how it works out. I had terrible problems with leg and foot cramps when on relatively high doses of Flovent and Serevent, after a bad bout of asthma a couple of years ago. I even experinced these cramps while on lower doses, though less frequently.  Interestingly, my husband was diagnosed with asthma last year and he, too, experienced leg and foot cramps after he was put on similar meds. The specialists were clueless about why and kept saying that since the doses were inhaled, we should not experience these cramps. They only happen with the oral doses. After much investigation, I learned that potassium depletion can occur as a result of these meds.  I started taking a potassium supplement (1 per day) with my GP’s approval, and I get no muscle cramps, unless I forget to take my potassium.

I’ve been on inhaled corticosteroids for about 7 years now. I’m dependent. But I hardly ever have to use Ventolin, whereas I had to use 2-6 times per day 8 years ago. I can do vigorous aerobic exercise with virtually zero asthmatic symptoms. I do not take this for granted. Sure, the fact of dependency bothers me, but not as much as another aspect: to a certain extent each of us on long-term inhaled corticosteroids is a guinea pig. Let’s face it.  We all know about the potential risk of adrenal suppression. But the thing that gets me is the strong assumption that because the dosages are metered and "non-systemic" (i.e., not like Prednisone) that side effects will probably be negligible. It’s comforting to think that and believe that – and most of the time I do think that (this may be called "denial" borne of a need for psychological self-protection) – yet when sometimes my most rational call-a-spade-a-spade mind realizes that this is a case of long-term wait and see. I include a short article from JAMA from earlier this year about this topic, below. We apparently need to be aware of proximal myopathy… michael    Source:  JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Jan 6, 1999             v281 i1 p37(1).     Title:  Proximal Myopathy Associated With Inhaled Steroids.(Letter to the             Editor)    Author:  Andrew G. A number of undesirable systemic effects have been reported with the use of inhaled corticosteroids, including cataracts, suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, osteoporosis, and possibly glaucoma [(1)(2)]. Report of a Case. A 37-year-old woman who had a seizure disorder that was well controlled with carbamazepine therapy began to use a beclomethasone nasal inhaler, 42 [micro]g of drug per nasal pump unit, 1 to 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily, for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Four weeks later, the patient began to experience tightness in her thighs and increased fatigability when she climbed stairs or walked distances that were previously readily tolerated. Findings on a general medical examination were normal. Neurologic evaluation revealed a mild to moderate reduction in strength (4 1/2/5 range) in neck flexion and bilaterally in shoulder abduction and hip flexion. Muscle weakness had not been noted in the past. Findings on the remainder of the neurologic examination, including muscle strength elsewhere, cranial nerve function, and deep tendon reflexes, were within normal limits. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, thyroid function test results, cortisol and serum creatine kinase levels, and an tinuclear antibody titer were normal. Serum carbamazepine level was in the midtherapeutic range Electromyography (EMG) showed normal resting activity, without fibrillations or trains of myotonic potentials. Voluntary contraction of proximal muscles showed an increased recruitment pattern and diminished average size of units, consistent with myopathy. The possibility of steroid-induced myopathy was considered, and the use of inhaled steroids was discontinued. At the time of follow-up 1 month later, the patient was free of exercise-induced muscle tightness and reported normal exercise tolerance and strength Examination revealed full motor strength, and repeat EMG showed normal unit morphology and recruitment. Without steroids, she has had no recurrence of weakness for 2 years. Comment. OK, first of all, how are you functioning during the daytime, after your 5 hours?

80 % of the time I can function during the day, while feeling tired; 20 % of the time I lay in bed all day. Also, I have chronic Fatigue and I am on long term disability. Anything good happening from this medication after 7 weeks?

Yes, anxiety has become less pronounced, but still need to up the Effexor to better control my anxiety. My fear is if I up the Effexor then I will get no sleep at all. What is it being prescribed for?

Do you take Effexor for anxiety/panic, depression? Does it work at this low dose? Good sedating antidepressants that work also for anxiety/panic are amitriptyline (TCA) and Paxil (SSRI). Also Remeron which as a rule is somewhat less effective for anxiety disorders but does help people. Low dose ami and ditto Remeron are succesfully prescribed as  sleeping aids. Could the side effects of SSRIs/SNRIs be making me depressed ?

Question:

I have never been diagnosed with depression.  I have panic disorder.  I am not happy with the side effects of the antidepressant, Effexor XR.  I am not happy about my energy level and lack of emotions.  Even though I’m not happy about these symptoms, I don’t feel depressed.  I feel like the med is not letting me be me.  It’s not an ego thing.  It’s just feel that I need more energy and emotions to get back into the midst of life. Tony

Why not skip the ADs and just take Xanax XR or Klonopin? The only problem is tapering off of Effexor but it can be done, obviously. Philip — The charter is available at:

Please help (in Australia and anxious)

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – X-No-archive: yes Hi, I posted here almost 2 years ago after suffering a series of panic attacks and extreme anxiety for abt 6 months. Months later, the anxiety is still around, though not as severe. I never had any treatment and it seemed to subside, although my eating habits have remained permanently screwed up. I’ve also had to deal with chronic severe endometriosis, which I finally had treatment for this year, so it has been fairly tough!! My problem is that I am due to begin my Honours year in psychology (ironic? I think so) next year and, to put it frankly, I am terrified that the anxiety is going to come back a lot worse. I already feel sick and shaky thinking about it, and I feel myself getting more and more agitated as the end of the year draws closer. This time, I want to take some kind of medication to help me through it, but I’m unsure when I should see a doctor and request it — since the university year runs from March – November here, I’m thinking early January, so I’ll have the chance to find something that will work hopefully and give it a chance to kick in? I want medication because, looking back, I can remember instances of extreme anxiety dating back to when I was 5 years old, which kinda suggests to me that it might be some kind of neurotransmitter imbalance as opposed to something learnt or directly environmentally triggered. I’ve had this all of my life, and it’s only now that it’s really starting to drive me crazy. I’m so scared I won’t find a med that will work for me. My fingers are just crossed that I will! Any advice on the kind of medication to take? I know that it varies, but I have friends who have taken Zoloft for anxiety and found it very effective, and I’m a little wary of Aropax (Paxil) due to the withdrawal symptoms I have heard about. Any comments/advice would most appreciated. Take care xxxxxxxx

I just started taking klonopin.  It is a benzo.  I like the ideas of benzo because if you have side effects or do not like them you simply stop and they are not in your system forever.  Like SSRI like Prozac Zoloft Celexa paxil all take at least 2 to 3 weeks of nasty side effects and making anxiety worse before you feel any relief :(  then if you feel you cannot stand the side effects and stop they stay in your system for like 2 or more weeks still!  Benzo is just a fancy term for tranquilizer.  I take .25 Klonopin once in the morning and once at night.  I have only been on it a week but like it so far. Also Benzo family work instantly like the very first pill you take it reduces anxiety.  The only thing is the firs day or so you may feel a little tired while you body adjusts.  Then the sleepiness for me went away but the anti anxiety calm feeling is staying so far! Cool Dustin, I am glad it is working for you.  Good luck when you put the dosage up again. If it is working now, it will continue to work for you when you add a bit more, then you can concentrate on your "baby steps" getting out in that big wide world again! Take care Imogen

Take care xxxxxxxx I just started taking klonopin. Good Luck! Dustin

Hello, I don’t see any reason for waiting. Why not see a specialist now. You may not need medication. Therapy may help but if you need medication as well it would be helpful to sort it out during your break, rather than worrying about it until next year. Sorry about the endometriosis but I’m pleased you have had treatment. I have been taking medication for years. A combination of Xanax and Efexor XR works for me but we are all different. Welcome to another Aussie. Take care, Meryl (Melbourne)

Effexor, and other things (longish)

Question:

Hello everyone!  I haven’t posted in quite awhile, but now I have questions I hope to get some help with. I use a CPAP at 6 cm, and I’ve been sleeping fine until a few weeks ago, when I started having some pre-CPAP symptoms, especially waking up once or twice a night to use the bathroom.  Around the same time I also started experiencing insomnia, which I’ve never had a problem with before. A month ago, my neurologist started me on Effexor for migraine headache prevention.  I spent a week taking 37.5 mg daily, then bumped up to 75 mg daily, taken in the morning.  The list of side effects for Effexor includes insomnia, so I’m wondering if the drug could be responsible for that, as well as for the return of the pre-CPAP symptoms.  Thoughts? Anyone here taking Effexor? It’s helping with the headaches, and I’d like to try increasing the dosage, but not if it’s going to screw up my sleep. On to another issue: in late March, my long-term live-in relationship with my boyfriend ended.  Long story, which I won’t go into in detail. I moved out (we were living in his house). The last two months have been enormously painful and stressful, but things are beginning to settle down.  I’ve been seeing a psychologist, and the Effexor has certainly helped stabilize my moods.  No more wild roller-coaster emotions. And speaking of stress, my mother is having a recurrence of some serious health problems, and as an only child, I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed and alone in dealing with that. So…. could my sleep problems be some sort of delayed reaction to the stress of the break-up, and/or my mom’s problems?  Oddly enough, I had no sleep problems at all during late March and throughout April, when the break-up was in process and I was dealing with finding a place to live and all the hassles of moving. Finally, I’ve dropped about five or 6 pounds in the last few weeks, which I attribute to loss of appetite due to stress and some stomach upset the first couple of weeks I was in the Effexor.  But I weigh 177 pounds now, and I don’t think five pounds would be enough to necessitate a pressure change.  (For the record, I started on CPAP in September 2000 at a pressure of 7 cm, and was dropped to 6 cm last November after a second sleep study.) Is there anything besides weight loss that might require a pressure change?  I’m not sure my insurance will pay for another sleep study only eight months after the last one. I’ve been thinking about trying a small amount of an OTC sleep aid for the insomnia.  Is this a really bad idea? Well, I think that’s all my questions.  :-) Thanks! Donna sleepless in Pa.

My experience with Effexor was pre-CPAP. I didn’t have any problem falling asleep, but you can’t draw any conclusions from that. But you’re experiencing migraines, nocturia, and (recently) having problems coping, these are all well known side effects of OSA. Clean your filters and check for leaks. If everything’s ok, then I’d talk to your doctor about going back to your original pressure, you shouldn’t need a re-test. Most OTC sleep aids contain the same active ingredients as Benadryl, it’s a very good temporary sleep aid. Just pick up a bottle of the cheapest generic equivalent at your local drug store. I was on it until the XR form came out… then my doctor switched me so I had fewer pills. The list of side effects for Effexor also includes somnolence.

It’s helping with the headaches, and I’d like to try increasing the dosage, but not if it’s going to screw up my sleep.

I’d say it might be worth a try… Effexor gets out of your system fairly quickly (unlike that darn Prozac).

Finally, I’ve dropped about five or 6 pounds in the last few weeks, which I attribute to loss of appetite due to stress and some stomach upset the first couple of weeks I was in the Effexor.

Effexor also seems to have a mild anorexiant effect for some patients.

I’ve been thinking about trying a small amount of an OTC sleep aid for the insomnia.  Is this a really bad idea?

It might work, if you do it occasionally. — Found elsewhere on USENET: "yes invite more — but PLEASSSSSSSE NOT Jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjulie"

Giving up on the idea of weightloss

Question:

Nichole, Excuse my ignorance but I saw you mention you gave up cream cheese. I had asked you why in a previous post , so that question is answered. I’m wondering why you dont eat Diet Jello if it has no carbs? Is it because it whets your appetite for sweets? I’m new at this. Is there a list of things that people in here have found to be counter productive though it is considered legal food? Thanks so much, Laureen

Response:

Beth, smack smack whats to give up. Its a healthy change post a day or two here are you working out did you consume some major salt intake prior to the 4 lb gain there are so many factors are you measureing and counting foods if you have lowered your calorie, sometimes what we think is a cup and what is a cup is vastly different You are the person in control of your weightloss, no one else JoKnows

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am sort of giving up on the idea of weightloss. I will stay on Atkins just because it’s effects on my BG.  I have not lost anything, inches or lbs. since my first 12 days. I woke up this morning and found I gained 4 1/2 lbs in 2 days. I don’t get my TOM so that can’t be it. ( I did lower my calories 1900- 2000/day) I had to give up Chromium Picolinate because it made my BG rise. I did find that I must eat something ever 3-4 hours or my BG rises. My body thinks I am starving and makes my liver kick out more glycogen.  This all stems from years of starving my self. No Breakfasts. Ignoring hunger pangs. Being to lazy to get up and make something.  I actually have conditioned myself to enjoy the feeling of being hungry. Sure I get lightheaded but …. Hmmm.. I can’t remember any benefits of it. I used to do it because I didn’t want to be seen eating in front of my friends in school and I wanted to sleep in a little longer in the morning. I am not sure how to correct it. I will try to eat more calories from protain and fat. I will try Nina’s suggestion for 10x weight and I won’t weigh myself for 3 weeks. We’ll see where I stand then. I am trying to wean myself off from my Zoloft. I currently take 50 mg. The reason I take it is because of a natural tendency for despair. I get very negative about myself. With it I feel great. I just know it is said that these type of meds hinder weightloss. Can you suggest any natural alternatives. I have to go back to my DR. in December for a 3 month Hba1c. I will also ask him to test my thyroid to make sure my Levoxl is working enough. My body temp. is always 97.8 and hasn’t changed since beginning the Thyroid meds. After Thanksgiving I am going to try a Yeast cleansing diet to see if that is a cause of no weight loss. BethM — homepage.mac.com/bsmorr/Photo 1         297/291.5/165

Response:

Oh, Beth… I’m sorry you are feeling bad about your lack of loss in the last few weeks. If you posted what you are eating, I missed it.  I usually don’t read those posts.  I cut out cream and cream cheese, artificial sweetener in packet form and am trying to eliminate all preservatives from my diet.  I also cut out diet Jell-O.  I know this way of eating works for improvement of so many areas of one’s physical being, including weight loss.  I think that Dianne Schwartzbien said that some people may not lose for an entire year on low carb because they have been so depleted by years of low cal/low fat dieting. I think you are wise to continue on Low Carb to reap the medical benefits. I do believe if you experiment a bit you may find yourself losing the weight you wish to shed.  Hang in there, babydoll!  Bliss is just down the road a piece.

Thanks Nichole, I am going to try a few differnt things and try to forget about losing weight. I am hoping for a big weight loss suprise at the end of 3 weeks. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey, Beth, don’t give up. I do think it’s a good idea to give yourself a little break for awhile though, emotionally. Not weighing for awhile is a great way to take a break. But don’t give up entirely. You may still be in an adjustment phase. I think you should listen to Nina about the 10-12x your weight in calories. Nina really knows her stuff! I’m not sure a natural alternative to Zoloft wouldn’t have the same side effects. But you wouldn’t be able to control the dose as well. Maybe your doctor has another suggestion about a different medication. You may have hit on something about getting hungry. Can you work on spreading out your food over even more meals than you already do? Maybe you have something to go on about the yeast, too. The yeast cleansing diet isn’t hard to do, after you get used to it, according to DH. You can do it any day of the year, even Thanksgiving. Try this page www.candidapage.com There’s a food list there that DH followed. He fixed himself up. CAD 2/94 LC 7/01 188/167/126

Beth, I have the same problem but here’s the thing *INCREASE* your calories if you want to lose weight, I’m serious. I have the exact same problem as you and the *only* way that I actually lose weight is by eating at least 12x body weight (lbs) in calories and drinking tons of water. DO NOT LOWER YOUR CALORIES. It’s only bringing your body back to that "comfortable" state of starving which has not done anything but keep the pounds on all this time. Trust me, this is something I find myself struggling with daily.Don’t give up, just try to force yourself to eat more calories and see what happens. ( I did lower my calories 1900- 2000/day) Beth, it’s tough to stay on-WOE when the numbers don’t move, yet it’s good preparation for manitenance.  Nina’s advice is what worked for me even though I had trouble believing that 10x present weight would take weight off.  For me, it did.  I hope your metabolism catches up with your intentions or that your scales are broken. Hang in there, woman — it’s worth the fight! Cheers, Kay

Kay, Thanks for the help. I don’t mind this WOE at all. I don’t miss anything. BethM 232/144 (lowcarb since 98/12/26) maintenance since May 2000

Beth: For me, Zoloft not only stalled weight loss, but put pounds back on — almost daily! I switched to St. John’s Wort (900 mg. per day) with much success.  None of the side effects of Zoloft with all of the antidepressant effects. BarbF

Good luck,if I can do it I know you can do it too :) Erika RollerGirl

Hey, Beth, don’t give up.

Antidepressants and low carb

Question:

Hi, I’ve been a low-fat type person for a long time.  The last six months I’ve been on Paxil and have gained some weight.  The low fat diet isn’t helping me.  Has anyone on antidepressants had a successful diet experience with low-carb?  Thanks! Hi Dosbabe! I’ve been on Prosac for over a decade, happily, and have had some good results.  I not one of the fastest losers, but I’ve managed to take off about 50 pounds. The only side effect that I seem to have is an increased thirst and difficulty waking up in the mornings.  My sleep has become very, very deep. Good luck! suzi_cream_cheese 262/213/145

Yeah I’m taking zoloft and doing fine. According to Schwarzbein (TheSchwarzbein Principle), A low carb diet will help balance out the chemical soup inside your head. She claims insulin resistance= high carb diet,  is one of the things that unbalance and deplete serotonin in your brain. Which is the same thing that antidepressants try and balance. Give it a try. After talking with your Doc. first.

hair loss with zoloft?

Question:

Ari, I wonder if he meant that hair loss is not an issue with SSRIs in general, or specifically not a problem with Zoloft?  If it’s the latter, maybe I’ll switch from Prozac, which seems to be causing some mild & subtle hair loss for me. But I do think that all SSRIs warn that it is a rare side effect. — Ari

I was pretty amazed to see all sorts of discussion lists on the web with lots of people saying that all sorts of different SSRIs were causing hair loss.  The two worst offenders seemed to be Paxil and Zoloft.  But Prozac was in there, too.  Now, maybe it was just that the people with the hair loss were posting, and actually very few people had hair loss.  But, from what I read (spent many hours reading all this stuff one night, all the while checking my hair to make sure it indeed still was up there), it seems to be more than rare. Matt

It’s too early to tell if it’s working, but I got myself on the same kind of vitamin regimen adopted by some depakote users.  The consensus on a few online forums seems that selenium and zinc (and to a lesser degree choline, inositol, vitamin B and folic acid) is sometimes useful for people on mood stabilizers (is that the right term?).  I have been taking them for two months, and perhaps there has been less hair loss recently (25 hairs/day versus 45), but it’s still early.  Mind you, my wife thinks I’m imagining things, but I have definitely noticed some subtle fallout since I began Prozac in November 97.  But at this point, since the hair loss is so mild, I prefer to stick with Prozac a bit longer; it works too well otherwise for me not to. Ari

Response:

Interesting, I know it can be a problem with depakote, but I haven’t heard of antidepressant doing it. Tim, Try an altavista with +hair +zoloft (or prozac or paxil or effexor, for that matter). Matt

I haven’t noticed any hair loss : after five weeks, but then, I haven’t got much hair left to lose :( . : : I’m seeing my psychiatrist this afternoon. I’ll ask him how common this : problem is and get back to you. : : –Ed : Thanks Ed–I look forward to the report. : Best, : Matt Matt, According to my doc (who’s a good guy, very smart), hair loss is *not* a side effect of Zoloft. It is with other meds (which, he didn’t say), but not with this one. I can see it now: TV ads for Zoloft which proclaim, "With Zoloft, your hair is safe!" –Ed

Interesting, I know it can be a problem with depakote, but I haven’t heard of antidepressant doing it.

Tim, Try an altavista with +hair +zoloft (or prozac or paxil or effexor, for that matter). Matt
