Hi Everyone! Weird side effect with flovent???

Question:

Hi- I’m fairly new to this whole thing.  I’ve been on the Flovent 2 puffs in morning and evening and I’m doing much better but I’ve only been on it sice March 29th and I’m noticing that my hair is starting to fall out.  Not in big gobs but like when I’m in the shower I notice it and when I blow dry my hair and I’m brushing it I get quite more in the brush.  Kind of like after you have a baby and your hair starts shedding.  Is this a flovent side effect?  Maybe the beconase?  It’s not too bad yet- but it’s kind of annoying- hopefully I won’t go bald.  Yikes!!!  Has anyone heard of this? If not- I guess I should check into seeing if my thyroid is all ok or something.  Colleen

Response:

Daniel Hicks… Well- I did read the info packets and saw nothing about the hair issue. Even spoke to the pharmacist and they haden’t heard of it either.  That’s why I thought I’d throw the question out to see if there might be ANYONE out there in cyberland that might have experienced the same thing.  I’m figuring that it is just some hormonal thing or thyroid or something like that.  The only reason I’m even suspecting the medication is that it’s new and so is the medicine which makes me suspicious.  I like your hypochondriac line.  I agree,  It’s great to be a well informed hypochondriac.  :)  Colleen

One thing you should do is read the literature that comes with your medication.  Most inhalers come with a fairly detailed data sheet that includes a list of the observed side-effects and their frequencies.  I don’t know if shedding hair is one of the observed side-effects of Flovent, but likely if it is it is mentioned on that data sheet. By reading these data sheets you can anticipate problems and head them off.  Of course, if you tend to be a hypochondriac then it could put all sorts of new ideas in your head, but at least you’ll be a well-informed hypochondriac.

I have been losing hair and just thought it was part of aging.  Since this post I believe that my hair loss started around the time I started on Flovent. Just a thought but maybe it’s revelant.

Hiya – Have you also been taking prednisone or other steroids since taking Flovent, or have you ONLY been taking flovent??  I am experiencing hair loss, but I have also been steroid dependent for 3 years.  From what I understand, even if you intermittently take steroids over time it can cause hair loss. If you havent been taking steroids at all, Im very surprised to hear that it could be caused by the Flovent.  I thought taking meds through inhalers minimized the side effects for the most part.  I would check with your doctor or the company. Response:

Thanks everyone- I happened to be at my regular doctor’s today for my daughter and asked him about it and he said that it’s likely that 2 puffs in morn and night might be too much for me and he said to see if I can drop it to one each morn and night.  He says that often times if you have too much of a medication it will cause this.  He says if it doesn’t work he wants to do some test’s.  I forgot to mention I’m using beconase too so maybe the two together are overkill since they both have steroids.  In response to Nancy’s question. "I only did the prednisone tablets for a week after my anaphylactic reaction on the 17th but I know the stuff does build up in your system.  Maybe it’s just a combination of everything.  I guess I can live with it as long as I can breath and I don’t go bald.  :)

Response:

I had no idea that prednisone could cause hair loss.  I was recently on 12 days of prednisone and noticed that I was losing hair in the shower and the hair on my arms sort of went away.  So this must have been from the prednisone!   I also didn’t know that prednisone can make you sun sensitive. I was out in the sun for 3 hours several days after stopping the prednisone and really, really got fried.  I am still peeling.  How long do these side effects last??? Response:

Patrice I don’t know how long it last’s I’ve just heard that it builds up in your system over a period of time and it can cause immune problems.  I’ve never been on prednisone until they made me take it for the anaphylactic reaction. Do other steroids like the inhalers, nasal sprays cause sun sensitivity or just prednisone?  This is all so new to me I hope I get it figured out before the sun comes out. Colleen

Response:

Perhaps you are anxious and stressed out over the asthma.  I lost 10 lbs when I was diagnosed because of stress. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi- I’m fairly new to this whole thing. No way!  ME- Stressed?  How could that possibly be????  I have 3 kids 4 and under, a yard full of weeds and I can’t eat chocolate or anything else good anymore.  Do you really think that could be considered stressful????  :)  Ha ha-  Of course I’m stressed-   I don’t know of anyone who isnt these days. At least I can exercise now without coughing- which should help in that dept.  :)  Oh- I’ve got it….. Here’s a theory…  No chocolate?  No peanuts?  Hair loss!   Bingo… All those people on rogaine should eat Reeses peanut butter cups instead. Colleen

Response:

Hi Colleen, I have been on Flovent and Nasacort (inhaler and spray) for over 1 1/2 years and haven’t experienced the sun sensitivity.  I am a sun bunny so would like this to GO AWAY any time now.  I was planning on hitting the coast this weekend, but can’t due to the peeling and lots of new pink skin there! Are you using an AeroChamber spacer with your Flovent MDI, rinsing and spitting out after inhaling? This can reduce side effects by a factor of 2 or more. Steroids should always be used in the minimum dose to control the problem. Inhaled steroids are typically 10% of less or oral steroids, since inhaled go directly to the lungs. Flovent comes in 3 strengths; 44, 110, & 220 mcg/puff. It’s true there is an additive effect to steroid side effects from oral inhalers [Flovent] and nasal spray [Beconase]. You might try Nasalcrom nasal spray, now OTC, to reduce or eliminate the Beconase. Nasalcrom [cromolyn] is very safe.   In response to Nancy’s question. "I only did the prednisone tablets for a week after my anaphylactic reaction on the 17th but I know the stuff does build up in your system.  Maybe it’s just a combination of everything.  I guess I can live with it as long as I can breath and I don’t go bald.  :)

Steroids are metablized within your system within hours but side effects can build up with long term use. Steroids are immunosuppressants, which can allow other diseases to flourish. I didn’t see hair loss specifically listed as a side effect of prednisone but there are lots of other side effects. PI on prednisone at http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/pred.htm prednisone Excerpts: "Adverse Reactions: Fluid and Electrolyte Disturbances: Sodium retention; Fluid  retention; Congestive heart failure in susceptible patients;  Potassium loss; Hypokalemic alkalosis; Hypertension Musculoskeletal: Muscle weakness; Steroid myopathy; Loss of  muscle mass; Osteoporosis; Tendon rupture, particularly of  the Achilles tendon; Vertebral compression fractures;  Aseptic necrosis of femoral and humeral heads;  Pathologic fracture of long bones Dermatologic: Impaired wound healing; Thin fragile skin;  Petechiae and ecchymoses; Facial erythema; Increased  sweating; May suppress reactions to skin tests" I doubt a low or medium dose of inhaled steroid would cause hair loss. If in doubt about Flovent, switch to Pulmicort, another excellent high strength inhaled steroid. [I use Pulmicort.] Ellis

Response:

Thanks Ellis.  I do use an aero chamber and rince my mouth out every time. I think you’re right about the beconase.  I would rather try cutting down on the beconase or trying something different than cutting down on the Flovent since it has made such a dramatic difference in my coughing episodes.  I can deal with the itchyness of allergies but the coughing really sucks the energy from me.  Colleen Oh- and thanks for the link too.

Response:

Thanks Patrice.  At least I don’t have to worry about getting sunburned.  I don’t really know why I’m so worried- I mean- Seattle isn’t the place to really get a tan.  ;)

Hey There, I’ve been on Flovent 220 4 puffs twice a day for over two years now. I have had to take two fairly long courses of Pred 60mg for six weeks or more and then taper. I am a 48 year old man with that ole male pattern balding problem hair falling out since I was twenty. But with the steroids my hair is thicker and now I’m going much more body hair (back and chest) My beard is even going faster. I joked with my Doc last visit who needs Rogaine I got Flovent. So go figure I guess we are all a little in the way these meds effect us. God Bless, Norm

Abnormal hair growth is more likely attributed to Prednisone. Sheldon On a recent Night Court rerun, Judge Harry Stone had a wonderful line: "I try to keep an open mind, but not so open that my brains fall out."

Jack, I constantly have/had problems with thrush from my oral steroids until I hit upon the following combination….  – rinse my mouth twice daily with 2 drops of tea tree oil in water (warning, tea tree oil seems to trigger some asthmatics)  – eat at least 250 grams (small container) of yougurt with natural bifidalfous (sp?) bacteria in it daily.   You can get these bacteria in "capsule" form from drug stores and health food stores as acidophus.   — every 4 weeks when this regieme breaks down (who knows, maybe it doesn’t even really work), get my Dr. to prescribe an oral dose of 150 mg Diflucan, a anti-fungal designed to treat women’s yeast infections, but it works wickedly well on my thrush too.  My Dr. has now given me a standing prescription for Diflucan. Good luck…..

Response:

Although Flovent worked well for me, I had constant thrush, even if I rinsed with water and mouthwash immediately.  My doctor switched me to Pulmicort, which is a breath activated dry powder inhaler.  Although I still occasionally get thrush, it has not been as bad as Flovent.  And Pulmicort seems to work.  No attacks since October, and I had been having one every two months. Talk to your doctor about using a spacer for the Flovent (I’m assuming that it’s an MDI type) – that may help prevent further bouts of thrush once you’ve got it under control. In the meantime, try an anti-fungal mouthwash – if your doctor can’t recommend one, see what your dentist can come up with ! My hospitalization and accolate

Question:

This is a cryptographically signed message in MIME format. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I don’t understand your doctor’s comment on Accolate at all. In my case I was having fairly frequent episodes where walking 100′ was simply impossible and just getting out of bed and going to the bathroom did make me quite out of breath.  Prednisone was the only thing that worked for me.  Then *after* I started taking Accolate all of that went away completely. I have cats, I’m allergic to dust mites and molds as well.  They don’t have much effect anymore.  Cigarette smoke still does but it has to be really thick for that to happen. I’ve even had a sinus infection after that and it didn’t trigger the asthma at all.  For me, Accolate provided the control that nothing else had.  I still use Serevent once in a while (like on foggy days or when it rains) and I tend to use Albuterol before I exercise but I haven’t needed any rescue meds since I started the Accolate.  I did use Flovent 220 while I had the sinus infection though. Basically since it was Accolate that gave me the control I have no idea what your doctor meant.  You do have to be consistent about taking it though and it does take some time (it took me 3-4 months) to be fully effective. Loki – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Last week Wednesday I had to call 911 to take me to the hospital due to an asthma attack.  I have had asthma for about 6 or so years and it has several triggers including animal dander (I have 4 cats and get my shots), dust, and mold.  The night before I had cleaned out some cupboards in which water had leaked and I think I must have gotten a good breath of mold, since that night was uncomfortable for me and the following morning I had to turn back from the subway and return home to have my wife call 911. This was the first time that I had to be hospitalized although I have had a couple of bad attacks. The EMTs gave me two nebulized albuterols and then shipped me to the ER. There they gave me some more along with Salmeterol, magnesium, and other such. They also did a chest X-ray.   When I didn’t clear quite as quickly or fully as they liked they suggested I be admitted.  My peak flow at that point was 400 but I was still wheezing.  I stayed overnight and got a perscription for a week of prednisone (4-2-2-1-1-1 ). When I contacted my Dr. he felt that they had been too cautious and if I could walk 100′, go to the bathroom by myself, all without getting out of breath, then I should not have been admitted.  He also had asked why I had started with Accolate (my ussual "poison" is Aerobid and Seravent)?  I had gotten on that after some questions with my Allergist and hoped that it might allow me to take less medication on a regular basis. Here is the kicker … My Dr. said that Accolate isn’t really for the sort of asthma control I wanted.  That it was for keeping asthma from "exacerbating". He recommended I stop taking it, at least till a followup visit since it actually may have been partly responsible for my attack. I would be interested in anyone’s comment about the use of Accolate, my Dr.’s statements and anything else.   The attack was QUITE frightening, the hospital stay was at the least dull, but at the same time agravating, if it was unecessary! I honestly don’t know! What is the normal dose of FLOVENT? What is the right dose for you? Virtually everything that I take would be at a supraphisiologic dose to the rest of the folks in this group! now something has changed in me. Something serious has happened to you and that uro is an idiot. Somehow, something has shut down within you. From your description I’d say that you need an endocrinologist with a specialty in andrology. I only know of 3 in that category – Dr Bain in Toronto, Dr Shippen and Dr Kryger – and only have experience with the one in Toronto. Dr Bain does see non-Canadians and, if you want some relief from the oppresive heat of Florida, you could arrange to see him. To get an idea of how good that I think he is – if he was a car mechanic working on my car, I’d enter a go-kart in the Indy 500.

The Life Extension Foundation, which is run by people who take drugs to extend their lifespan (a practice which many in the medical community look at askance, I assure you), keeps a Directory of Innovative Doctors at http://www.lef.org. Many of these physicians are themselves life extensionists. Finding a physician who is a life extensionist will almost surely mean that you’ve found a doctor that is more than willing to attack problems aggressively and creatively. Caveat emptor. Nobody knows how all of this stuff will turn out in the end. I wish you well, C/

I am a male 50 year old who noticed I was becoming semi-hard with the morning erection approx 1 year ago. I could engage in intercourse as long as my penis had stimulation and once into intercourse had no problem ejaculating. Masturbation was never a problem. About three (week of 13DEC99) weeks ago I came down with bronchitis and was given a perscription for to fight the infection and FLOVENT 110mcg Aerosol inh. 13gm (fluticasone propionate, a glucocorticoid) two times in the morning and two at night to be taken for two months. I started on 21DEC99. Sunday 2JAN00 I had trouble mantaining an erection during intercourse. I was concern the Flovent was affecting my desire so I stopped on 3JAN00. This can be due to several causes. Possibilitiess include hormonal, vascular or neural. Glucocorticoids can, if you get a supraphysiological dose, cause testosterone to drop to very low levels. Sunday 2JAN00 I had trouble mantaining an erection during intercourse. I was concern the Flovent was affecting my desire so I stopped on 3JAN00. Today I have practically no labido and no erection. I plan to visit the urologist on Fri 7JAN00. Do you think the FLOVENT might have had an impact?

It could have accelerated an existing problem. The low libido can be due to low dopamine or low testosterone or low libido or androgen insensitivity. Some of these can be tested for with ease. No erection can be plumbing. Low libido is usually chemical. Get your URO to test the following: Total testosterone Free testosterone LH FSH Prolactin Estradiol Zinc TSH T3 T4 Get the values and ranges and bring them back here. Do NOT accept "normal" as an answer. "Normal" includes impotent 85-year-olds (impotence is considered normal at 85). By bringing them back here, you’ll get umpteen people jumping in to help with advice as to what to do next. Don’t worry about the values being embarassing – you won’t beat what mine were (testosterone level that qualified me as a harem gaurd, estradiol higher than a woman pregnant with octuplets). Now my testosterone/libido are enough to make me want to rape a doorknob! What you want is to get your system into gear. The rapid onset is suspicious. Are you on any other meds?

Question:

I

am getting realy concerned – having another huge panic attack and Ijust went to

the pdoc yessterday. On Zoloft and Ativan.  If I don’t get this worked out soon

I could be in trouble…. MAC Mac, didn’t you say you’re on 25 mg Zoloft?  I think this is way too much to start out on – no wonder you’re feeling panicky. Try cutting that pill in quarters and take one of those a day.  Then add one quarter per week.  Most doctors just don’t seem to realize how sensitive some of us are to meds.  That’s why so many people think they don’t work for them. Dot

Response:

Hi, Mac, I would assume it is a short-lived side effect of the antidepressant.  Don’t fret, just let the feelings pass and try to tell yourself it is just a side effect and will go away in a couple of days…   ((((((Mac)))))) smiles, Elise

Response:

Hey Mac, steady on.  It WILL pass!  Its just a sneaky SOB.  Can’t see it, can’t control it, damn it.  We all know the feeling! Just a question for you, when do you take which meds? I discovered that I cannot take the atenolol in the AM, I have to take it at night before bedtime. I go to sleep quicker and don’t notice any other side effect. If I take it in the AM I’m crashing –feel faint and dizzy, just like a PA– about 2 hours later.  When I take it in  the AM my pulse rate is about 60 at 11 AM, when I most need to be percolating at full steam and starting the restaurant workday. I know you said a few  weeks ago that the atenolol didn’t affect you anymore, but you might look at it again.  Sometimes just an increment of personal  control can shift our inner stabilizer  to a more neutral position. You can also take the zoloft at night, or now, as you wean on, take half in the AM and half at bedtime.  Zoloft is "splittable".  I did that for financial reasons in the past, 100 mg Zoloft costs the same as 50 mg, so my rx were written for 100 mg and take 1/2 daily, saved me a bundle of money when I paid out of pocket!!! YMMV yada yada but use what tools you have to accomodate this bump.  You’ll be on the other side of the hump soon! HUGS, Mac.  Hang ON! Sue

MAC Dear Mac, "Sometimes" antidepressants can "temporarily" increase anxiety while weaning on them. Now…….I`m not saying that zoloft caused your panic, only your doctor could make that determination but he needs to know about this. Call your doctor!  Take care. MAC you are starting to get really boring. You are a smart guy. You have been told many times how the meds work, that they take time. I’m sorry you don’t have the time, but until the meds level off you are best to take a bedroll and park your butt on your docs doorstep. Or convince one of these ASAP types you are so fond of to come stay with you for a few days. I’m sure any number of them would like an expenses paid trip to Seattle.<g

Yes what Jackie said is true.  I tried Prozac a year back without a benzo and quit REAL QUICK.  IT made my anxiety terrible.  so now I have gone a year without it and am getting ready to start a benzo.  I am thinking after being on a benzo for a month or so I might try an AD. Mac just know that it is probably the SSRI causing the extra anxiety and that once you get used to it and have the benzo for a back up you will probably feel better than you have in YEARS!  I like the idea of an SSRI long term but not until I get on a benzo and get calmed down.  I also have a big move coming up soon. Why I finally decided to get a benzo  :) Good Luck! Dustin

I disagree with your response that a hallucinagen did NOT give a PA. Ever since a hullucinaginec triggered my first one, I have had them pretty bad for awhile. I never had one prior, and even though I have not used in over two years I still get them occasionally.

I thought the same thing for years – that a bad trip gave me years of anxiety and panic. At some point, though, I realized I had always been a "weird" kid, had nightmares all the time and a lot of fears. I think an intense drug experience can reconnect you to your primal fears, but it doesn’t change who you are. In fact, I’m more relaxed now than I was _before_ the drug experience, because I’ve faced some of the fears that I had tucked away in the back of my mind. Therapists have always told me that the bad trip didn’t really matter; maybe I’ve finally been brainwashed. But I remember obsessing endlessly for the first 2 years: "Why did I ever take that trip? I’m never going to be the same again!". That obsession fed my panic much more than any actual memory of the experience. I agree that there’s a certain trauma that we can go through as a result of a bad experience, but the mind can heal itself over time. This is why I think that PTSD may be different from panic disorder. I sure would like a real psychiatrist to clear this up for me!                                                               I am soooooo relieved that I am not the only person to feel likeme. It seems that no one else has residual effects. Also, I refuse to take Xanax, due to the fact that its addictive. Drugs have made me so paranoid to take anything including tylenol. I wish I could share my experiance with everyone so no one else has to go though it. Whoops, didnt mean to climb up a soap box, just happy to hear ( dismally ) that i am not the only one…

Me too. I didn’t know anything about PD for years; I just assumed that I had damaged my brain and was going to pay for the rest of my life. Thank God for the healing power of the mind. I’m still not sure that it matters whether we have our first PA while on a drug, in an exam, or on a plane – a PA is miserable no matter what triggers it! One more thing – like you, I was once very reluctant to go near ANY drug. I guess you only need to get burned once to stay away from the stove. BUT, looking back, I wish I had looked into meds, as they would have helped a lot (and did in later years). As long as you’re under doctor’s supervision, there’s no reason to fear Xanax or any other _prescription_ drug. YMMV, but I think most here will tell you that meds helped, rather than hurt them. Good luck! John S.

However, this doesn’t mean that the experience GAVE you panic disorder (which you may not even have). It’s important to keep the one-time drug experience in perspective, and not obsess about it. All I can say is, focus on how you’re feeling NOW, and forget about the initial trigger, which is by now inconsequential. Follow some of the great advice on ASAP. I would advise you not to tell the MD about the drug use, because he may not prescribe what you need. Doctors vary widely on this; I had one doctor who wouldn’t prescribe Xanax because I have been sober for 5 years (I quit drinking, so he assumed that I have a tendency toward addiction). BTW, your post describes my foray into panic disorder (in 1982) very well. Don’t let it get you down; you’ll survive this! Cheers, John S.

Hi, this is my first time posting here so please bare with me. I’ll start off by saying that I have no idea what is going on with me, and I’m looking for info, help, whatever you can give me.         I’m 21, male and untill now, pretty outgoing. about three months ago, I smoked some marijuana with a new workmate (something I never do) I had a very bad experience with it (I’m not sure what you’re supposed to feel like when high, but I’m sure this was not what it was supposed to feel like) well, I eventualy came down, about two weeks later, late at night, I’m readying myself for a shower, and BAM, I feel like I did when I was high that day, now I am going to have a hard time explaining what it feels like, but I’ll give it my best shot.         I feel like I can’t think, even know I can, concentration is all but gone, I feel real tence, like I can’t calm down, can’t even realy watch TV. I get mild heart palpitations, and sometimes I get this feeling of not being real, my vision is funny, but I can’t explain that, KIND of like double vision, but not realy. and sometimes I get this feeling that washes over me and is gone within say 5 – 10 seconds, like I am realy zoned out.         this has been going on ever since. a few weeks ago, it started to get better, and I was starting to enjoy life again, and do the things I once had, then this last monday, I got a migraine, it went away, the folowing night I got another one, and I took some migraine pain reliefe wich got rid of it, well, as the migrain went away, that feeling came back, and it’s been with me again ever since.         I went to the doctor shortly after I started feeling like this and he gave me recomendation for blood work, wich I couldn’t afford seeing as I have not been able to work since this started happening.         PLEASE don’t judge me for the drug use as it is something I do not do. any onfo or similar experiences would VERY much be apreciated. thank you so much for your time, Matthew.

Wendy – you are *NOT* dying! Really! What’s happening is that you are having a panic attack. I am in another crisis, After 2 1/2 months on Serzone  I am realizing its just not working that well. I still get nausea, have a strange feeling in my head with some remaining dizziness and lightheadedness and these constant tension headaches! I have been communicating online with the "Panic Disorder Institute" and getting new information on things like how the PD links with the somatic symptoms and it certainly looks like I have an acid reflux condition from the panic and anxiety that causes my inner ear, sinus and throat problems and my digestive problems. This doc recommends Xanax and Carfate for this. But I’m scared again because I’m not sure about trying another benzo and getting to a high enough dose to do any good. But there are other AD’s. I had a very bad reaction to Serzone, including constant headaches…my pdoc told me there is a small percentage of people who will react badly to this particular drug because of a liver enzyme that reacts to it. I don’t know if this is what is happening to you, but my pdoc felt that was the problem with me…at any rate, you shouldn’t be having constant headaches! I think it’s time to get off the Serzone… << I have been communicating online with the "Panic Disorder Institute" and getting new information on things like how the PD links with the somatic symptoms and it certainly looks like I have an acid reflux condition from the panic and anxiety that causes my inner ear, sinus and throat problems and my digestive problems. Desperate, Melodee I have read Dr. Shipko’s reserach with great interest, and, although I have not directly communicated with him, I feel that his approach and findings make a LOT of sense…JMO. I DO know that Tofranil is a good med for PD. I also, however, am a huge believer in Xanax…without it, no matter WHAT ad I was on, I had no panic relief. I take 4-5 mgs. of Xanax per day…many people feel that is a "high" dose, but it has worked consistantly for me for about 10 years straight. As you know, everyone’s mileage varies when it comes to dosing, but I believe Xanax is sure worth a try!!! I know trying new meds is scary, but suffering with bad side effects and/or panic is NOT necessary! If I were you, I’d try another med, and give yourself a chance to start feeling better!!!:) Hang in…you are not alone! Best, ~~Char*) "You’re just jealous because the little voices talk to ME!"

I had terrible results with Serzone too. Tofranil is known to be a good panic/anxiety med. Personally after years of different medication trials I take Nortriptyline, which is in the same class as Tofranil, with xanax (and a very small amount of Prozac) and it is the best combination I have ever been on and I will happily stay on it for the rest of my life is needs be. I have to say though..the xanax has saved my life and made me a free and healthy person finally..I know there are a lot of scary stories about addiction and blah blah out there but for a lot of us with this type of disorder it is a very very good medication. I also follow the PDI BBS and read what Dr. Shipko writes and I have a great deal of respect for his opinions and advice. I would give the Tofranil a try, with xanax in lower doses if you are afraid to go the higher dosage route with Xanax alone. Best of luck to you and please post how it goes!  May — "Every time I feel the urge to exercise, I lie down until it goes away."                 – Mark Twain

Dear Melodee, I think you should certainly get off the serzone and try another medication. Medications don’t work the same for everyone, but Tofranil is an older and *well* tested medication that does work very well with PD for many people – myself included.  My life turned around when I combined Tofranil and Xanax together.  Until then I had tried numerous meds and lived a life of hell.  I slowly increased both dosages (with the help of my understanding physician) and now I have been at 150 mg Tofranil at bedtime with 4 mg Xanax per day for about 2 years straight.  This combo has worked well for others also. You may want to give it a try.  Hope you find relief soon and start feeling better.  You’re definitely not in this alone :) John L.

Although a certain amount of scepticism may be a good thing, I think you can safely regard Dr. S. at the PDI as a very trustworthy source of information. Often GERD and IBS are part of or at least comorbid with PD. I understand Shipko advised you to take Xanax and Carafate which seems to be a very good combo for this. As a matter of fact they are the meds he himself is on, being a sufferer too. Why are you scared about trying another benzo? It sounds like you had a bad experience with one? It’s an easy med to try. AD’s, on the other hand, have to weaned on slowly to avoid initial side effects and worsening of symptoms. As a matter of fact benzos are often used to help wean on an AD. Tofranil (imipramine) is a TCA (tricyclic antidepressant) which is an oldie but goodie. It’s stil often used for PD. It should be started at 10 mgs and then slowly raised up to therapeutic dose (which can be anywhere between 75-200 mgs and this can be verified by blood work). There is a third way and that’s combining Tofranil & Xanax (and Carafate can be added, this is more for IBS than for the actual Panic Attacks). Actually this is the combo I am on (Tofranil 150 mgs & Xanax 2.5 mgs). It works for me but YMMV. Philip

Response:

I have to agree with the rest of the group.  Tofrinil (imiprimine) and Xanax are an effective combo… I used both with 10mg. of Paxil.  It’s my understading that the SSRI (Paxil)  increases the serum level of imiprimine so you don’t have to take as much.  Warning:  the side effects from imiprimine can be wretched at first….NO saliva, constipation, daytime somnelence, etc… However, as with John L… the combo changed my life too.  I was on it for 4 years then DC’d and remained PA-free for 2 years. I’m currently on Zoloft…not as effective as the imiprimine, but I couldn’t handle the side effects anymore.   -VJ (another newbie to the group)

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Janet, I have also found that when I am very focused on myself my anxiety attacks get worse.  I usually do some breathing exercises if I think of it.  But when you are in the moment it’s hard to focus on anything productive, I’ll be the first to admit this.  Stay strong and I hope your doctor appointment goes well. Raquel I just found this newsgroup and I hope someone out there has experienced what I am now going through and can help me. I’ve been living with panic disorder (on and off symptoms) for almost 20 years.  My greatest breakthrough was 2 years ago when I finally found the Midwest Center and went through their 15 week program.  It helped tremendously.  However, I’m experiencing a set back and am having trouble coping. To make it short, I had learned to calm myself down with positive self-talk (i.e., it’s only my anxiety, I’m not going to die, I’m not going to go crazy, it will pass, etc.).  3 weeks ago, I experienced some very unusual, fluttery feelings in my chest, racing heartbeat, etc. and went to the emergency room.  By the time I got there, the feelings had stopped and they didn’t find anything wrong but suggested that I follow-up with a cardiologist.  I did and had an exercise stress test.  The test revealed that I’m having arrythmias.  My doctor wants me to wait 2 weeks before trying medication and if I’m lucky they’ll just stop.  Welll, 2 weeks are up and I’m still having them everyday.  My anxiety and panic disorder is now full blown.  I’m listening to my tapes, taking xanax, and trying not to freak out.  But, it’s hard to believe my positive self-talk when, in fact, there really could be something wrong with my heart.  Before, I would assure myself that there wasn’t anything physically wrong with me.  How can I do that now?  Has anyone experienced a similar circumstance?  What did you do to help yourself. My next doctors appointment isn’t until next week and I feel like that’s an enternity.  I also have a job interview today which I might have to cancel. Can you imagine me sitting there,  checking my pulse, holding my breath, spaced out and disoriented at a job interview?????  Some impression I’ll make, huh? Please, please anybody….any enouraging words or helpful ideas? Hi Janet, when i used to get bad general anxiety attacks at home i tried to keep as busy as i could. Even if i really did’nt feel like it i’d find some painting or gardening to do. Anything so long as i was’nt just sitting there focusing on myself all the time.                     There were times when i thought i was dying so i know how frightened you feel at the moment but if they found nothing wrong when you had the tests three weeks ago then try to trust that and focus on something outside of yourself. Easy for me to say i know but i felt the same as you this time two years ago.                     Sorry you feel so bad at the moment, best wishes.                                             Ken.

Response:

It sounds like the doctor doesn’t think the arythmias are dangerous.  Maybe he just wants to control them because they interfere with your panic control? Anyhow, something I find useful in my self-talk is to ask  myself, "will thinking about this right now help?"  the answer is usually no.  someone posted here that all prroblems can be divided into two groups, those that can be solved by worrying about them, and those that can’t.  Right now the arrythmia is in the second category.  You have made plans for the next thing to do about them, which is to see the doctor next week.  Until then, when you can get more information about what is going on, there is nothing else to do.  so try to keep shoving those worries into the second category, and keep them from giving you more trouble. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just found this newsgroup and I hope someone out there has experienced what I am now going through and can help me.

Janet, I have also found that when I am very focused on myself my anxiety attacks get worse.  I usually do some breathing exercises if I think of it.  But when you are in the moment it’s hard to focus on anything productive, I’ll be the first to admit this.  Stay strong and I hope your doctor appointment goes well. Janet: A few years back when we had an extremely tragic and stressful situation with one of our kids, I was having the same symptoms as you. My doctor put me on a portable EKG thing for 24 hours and it showed irregular heartbeats. It felt to me as if a large bird was fluttering madly in my chest, trying to break free! — or a fish flopping for its life.  This sensation took my breath away and was pretty frightening, especially all night as I tried to sleep. Unlike your doc, however, my family doctor diagnosed stress and anxiety, and immediately put me on Xanax to calm me down. It worked like a charm. The second day after beginning the med, I simply stopped having the palpitations. (I’d had them for about 3-4 months, getting worse all the time.) Do talk to your doctor about the possibility of some anti-anxiety medication to break this anxiety cycle. Good luck, and let us know what happens. Best, Anne —

Response:

Whoops! janet, I just re-read your posting and see that you *do* take Xanax. Perhaps you need an increased dosage; talk to your doctor, and if he’s not helpful, seek out a psychiatrist. Sorry I was asleep when I replied! – Anne —

I’ve been through the positive thinking route and found it’s effectiveness to be very limited. (when one is feeling well it really works!) I’d see a psychiatrist and get on the proper meds to control your anxiety. You sound like you need a higher dose of Xanax and/or another med. If the cardiologist told you to come back in one week, he couldn’t have been too concerned about a serious arrythmia. If he was, you would now be in the hospital being treated for it. Hope this helps, Chip Before you buy.

arrythmias.

big word little consequence unless you have underlying pathology like elctrical conduction problems or clogged arteries-from a medical standpoint what you are experiencing is tantemount to a hiccup or burp- they are uncomfortable only if you define them as awful or life threatening-the stimulating hormones your body is secreting at such high levels all the time are expressed evrywhere like in faster peristalsis of your gut or flutters of your heart these are benign symptoms of anxiety even if your anxiety attacks are controlled you understand you have a proclivity to experience stress and worry so you still are and are expressing it physiologicaly instead of emotively-meds can ease the cardiac contractions or mellow out the conduction time if needed so don’t freak out you aren’t going to die or go crazy. The very worse that will happen if these burps are bad enough is you will pass out and this is the very worse is rare if you are youngish and is still controlable with meds. re read and listen to her stopping scary thoughts tapes and don’t do the what ifs or imagine yourself having a cardiac arrest-once under the care of a cardiac doc you will be fine. there is a slight rebound activity that occurs with tapers off depakote-like all psychoactive meds it requires a slow taper-your brain will readjust withina short time to its lack of presence-seroquel works differently then zyprexa and is much more dose dependant both being very respectable meds you may find your responses different as with all medicaments and individual chemistries-as for your course load-push the envelope and as the great zen of nike said-just do it. the worse that will happen is you may succeed. If not so what. LM

Dear Raquel, As much as you don`t feel like it right now, there is much left to live for. You have a wonderful husband, and you also have Somer, I know how precious he is to you. I know moving is a stress right now, but think of how it may help improve your health in the long run? Has your depression worsened lately? I can`t recall the meds you are on for your asthma, if you are on prednisone, it could be exacerbating your depression. You might want to call your doctor about that. Maybe it would be a good idea to break down this accumulation of problems into more manageable parts. – How is your asthma coming along? Do the new meds work?  -Maybe you would like to tell us some more about your anxiety problems etc. and how they are treated… I think you should look for a good CBT-therapist.  -And what’s with the appartment? Sweetie…. You have plenty to live for… Maybe this move will be one that energizes you.  The other issues are hard to rid yourself of, but you know what?  There is NO REASON you can’t enjoy life anyhow.  MSN is a joke…I tell you what…we signed up for a free month, when we called to cancel (all 6 times) they gave us another free month.  Tell them you have a beef and they usually suck up.  Find another internet company.  We are using prodigy and it was simple as could be.  Also I know Juno offers free web service or their ‘premium’ service for only like 10 bucks a month.  Not to worry about the news servers….go to deja (as much as I HATE deja) or newsone.com…that is where I posted when my email server wouldn’t work right.  Just breathe sweetie…it will all get better. As for your asthma, what meds are you on?  I had a lot of trouble with mine until I tried Singulair and it has made a world of difference. They put me on Azmacort (a steroid inhaler) and I never even use it now.  I did right after my accident, but then when I stopped I noticed the singulair was going so good I didn’t really need to go back. During the move, take care of yourself.  Take long baths after packing, light some candles that smell like your favorite flower and don’t forget to pamper yourself.  It does wonders I promise I’m not doing to good right about now.  Between having to move because of problems with my apartment, anxiety, depression, asthma, fibromyalgia and Hellish problems with MSN, who is charging me Double and doesn’t support any news servers for me, I am about to go insane. Yeah.  It WAS causing problems, and as I think back, it was leaking a bit of blood.  Eventually it would have been found without killing me first :o )   I’m glad that my trusty Urologist was following the instruction manual for dealing with PCa.  He said that he liked to do the CAT scan because once in a while he picked up a kidney cancer.  He found garbage in my case, but, as Ripley says in the first Alien Movie, "lucky-lucky-lucky." oh … and the surgeon who put my gut back together said that the leiomyoma tumors are slow-growing.  It would take several years to get to the size of a golf-ball.  I guess that sucker was in there for 20-30 years getting bigger and bigger :o )  I was one of those ‘interesting cases.’ John. —-== Posted via Newsfeed.Com – Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==—- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups —= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers – Total Privacy via Encryption =—

The ‘one thing’ that had been old-reliable since 18 months did not function…  I got a script of vitamin V as my kindly Urologist refers to it…  No blue vision, occasional headaches, and a pathetic boner (like Harry Potter:  no bone, but flexible)  Was also taking an anti-depressant (Paxil) classed as SSRI, widely known by pharmacists and psychatrists as a doggie-downer; anti-depressant was to treat the lump in the throat that developed concomitant with the dx of prostate cancer.  Changed to Lexapro, a less potent SSRI anti-depressant, but still no cigar ;o)  On the advise of a pharmacist friend, skipped the Lexapro last night and bingo-bongo-sproingo.  Not quite Mr Happy, but certainly not mister Jell-O: it was insertion quality for sure.

Was also taking an anti-depressant (Paxil) classed as SSRI, widely known by pharmacists and psychatrists

as a doggie-downer; anti-depressant was to treat the lump in the throat that developed concomitant with the dx of prostate cancer. Now to get off the SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) and

onto a different anti-depressant. Happy to hear that both you and Mr. Happy are happy……as that side of things is not in my sphere of experience…..grin!! As to SSRI drugs, I know a lot about them because my daughter has a serotonin deficiency and has to take them.  There are roughly 30 different brands, of which Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, Welbutrin, and Luvox are the more well known ones.  They are all newer derivatives of Prozac to my knowledge, but our good doctor on this group can better inform you. E. has been on Luvox (horrible fatigue), Welbutrin (stopped working) and now Effexor, which is working quite well as it attacks the problem from a different angle.  And each one worked for about 2 years, then she had to switch.  And every darn one of them has a lot of side effects!! So speak to your doctor…….or better yet, your pharmacist…..and see if there isn’t one that won’t be a ‘doggie downer’.  E. does not have that problem (G).  But as these SSRI drugs seem to be for chemical deficiencies, perhaps there is a totally different anti-depressant that will do in the meantime, that won’t interfere with Mr. Happy. Just my 2 Cdn. cents worth……and if you can manage without them…..go for it.  I refuse to take any myself at the moment and am doing OK without them.  If I need a pill temporarily, I will certainly take one though.  My rant on here last week got rid of a lot of it…..grin.   (thanks, people) The way I look at it is that ‘depression’ is a not an abnormal thing when life is tough, and unless it *really* interferes with your enjoyment of life, it will get better on its own.  I am not a doctor…..but on the flip side, I have seen the amazing difference in E’s life and also my sister’s……as she is battling the same Cheers…….Heather – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Root Cause?

Question:

Is there a root cause for anxiety and panic? How and why do we *REALLY* perceive danger? A simple answer please. Thank you

Response:

:Is there a root cause for anxiety and panic? I think there are many reasons why we develop an anxiety disorder…. not just one. I don`t think we should "focus" alot of our energies on the "why" but more on the "what can I do to get better". :How and why do we *REALLY* perceive danger? For me it is what I tell myself that makes something dangerous or threatening. Jackie ~*~Be Who You Are.. And Say What You Feel.. Because Those Who Mind Don’t Matter.. And Those That Matter Don’t Mind…~*~

Response:

For me the "root cause" is genetics.  My father’s side of the family most had some form of anxiety/depression.  As a result my daughter [26] has been on Zoloft for anxiety.  My son [24] has been on and off meds.  He should continue with the Zoloft but like many others he does not like the idea of admitting something is wrong. For me the "Why" is genetics.  I got it from my kids.  :-] Like Jackie said we need to focus on "What" rather than "Why".  If you do not admit there is a problem and try to help get it "fixed" there will never be a solution for it. I quit fighting with anxiety a long time back.  I use the meds that work for me and as a result I have had a very good quality of life.  Charlie Tuna

"sunray" wrote Is there a root cause for anxiety and panic? How and why do we *REALLY* perceive danger? A simple answer please. Thank you

Hi Sunray, there is no simple answer. Here is a link to a site I find useful. Below is an extract about the theories on what causes anxiety. http://www.panicattacks.com.au/about/anxdis/cause.html Excluding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder there are three main theories about the cause of anxiety disorders. These are 1~Biological 2~Behavioural 3~Psychodynamic 1.  The biological theory includes the genetic predisposition in panic disorder and presupposes a chemical imbalance in the brain. Biological theory: includes a genetic contribution for panic disorder 2.  The behavioural theory sees the cause as learned behaviour, including our negative thought patterns. There is no doubt we ‘learn’ to become afraid of our panic attacks…and we learn very very quickly! From this fear, the multitude of fears grow. Each feeding on each other and impacting severely on our lives 3.  The psychodynamic theory looks at childhood issues as being the cause. While not everyone with an anxiety disorder has a history of childhood abuse, many people do. And the childhood abuse issues do need to be taken into account. Childhood issues also play a role in people who don’t have a history of childhood abuse. As children we all learnt from a very early age that we needed to become, ‘a good nice person’. hope that’s simple enough Vanessa

I think so too. I think we have a "weak" genetic link that breaks when enough stress is applied, and will probably spend the rest of our lives learning how to cope with it. – K

Response:

That does not mean that our lives have to be ruined.  I am retired from 2 jobs [medical and governmental], my daughter is an engineer in Ft. Lauderdale, my son is a licensed electrician and doing well also.   He still has not fully come to terms with his "inherited" anxiety but he will.  Really I am surprised he has not electrocuted himself by now.  :-] I think that a lot of us are Type A  with a perfectionist/controlling personality.  In short, we are the people that contribute to progress but at a tremendous cost to ourselves.   It is learning to control the anxiety and have it work for you that is a big step forward.  Don’t fight it but use it to accomplish constuctuive things like education, excercise, outdoor activites etc. Sitting around dwelling on our anxieties just makes it worse.  I am on, Zoloft, Elavil and Xanax as needed and my life has been great.  I have "bumps" every now and then but nothing that I can not handle. As a result of my life of anxiety the best thing happened to me 9 years ago. A heart attack.  Because of that I woke up and faced the reality of what anxiety can do. Never thought too much about it before then.  I was just another hyper workaholic. Now I take one day at a time and enjoy the hell out of it.  If I have a PA I pop a Xanax and dare it to continue.  :-]  Charlie Tuna

Question:

funny you should ask i’m seriously considering asking my doctor if he’d let me experiment with it. as a supplement to paxil that is.  my concern is if there are any possible adverse reactions from cocktailing the two. i’ve been diagnosed with two types of ptsd. ptsd with generalized anxiety disorder and ptsd with clinical depression. so far paxil is all i’m taking. i’ve tried prozac but it didn’t work for the anxiety, only the depression. now i’m very much curious about trying Zoloft. feedback, anyone?

That’s a new one.  PTSD *is* an anxiety disorder.  The symptoms of GAD are encompassed in PTSD so that someone with PTSD shouldn’t be co-morbidly diagnosised with GAD.  However, depression is a common, seperate, co-morbid diagnosis (90%).

so far paxil is all i’m taking. i’ve tried prozac but it didn’t work for the anxiety, only the depression. now i’m very much curious about trying Zoloft.

Prozac shouldn’t be taken for any anxiety related problems. Few people who take it find that it decreases anxiety. For the rest it worsens anxiety considerably. Mixing the SSRIs may not be the solution. You might want to consider adding a benzo to your SSRI to be taken only when you need it for high anxiety activities. Paxil is also well known to have a limited tolerance lifespan. Many people say it loses effectiveness after 1 – 2 years.  Zoloft doesn’t. All the SSRIs are basicly similiar meds – similar side effects and benefits. Some will help more than others. It’s just a matter of finding which SSRI works with your brain. As always YMMV  .. My advice is to take it only under a psychiatrist’s supervision. Smile and there will be something to smile about! Nancy (in a bad mood and trying to not share too much)

Hi everyone, I finally went to another Dr and I have been put on Zoloft.  Any one use this drug.  Does it really help or just take the edge off the ptsd?  My therpist is glad I’m back on the meds.  The past month has been hell for me. With the 9/11 events.  Then a week later my grandfather passed away.  Then on the weekend my daughter broke out with what looked like chicken pox (It wasnt though).  Had to cancel her birthday party cause she was sick.  Then there was the funeral.  i didn’t go cause of all the problems with flying. Needless to say it was like Hell on earth.  i ended up cutting again.  And after going for 8 months I was so ashamed of what i had done.  i thought i had gotten beyond that, but i guess not.  Oh well thats been my past month. Yes … remember that your dentist will probably want you to be on Buspar also.  The two together make a huge difference, and you don’t want to end up with a mouth full of problems due to side effects of Zoloft.

I don’t understand the question.  It changed my brain chemistry so that I could ‘get’ the therapeutic help I was being given.

The past month has been hell for me.

Sorry for your pain, but … there was a point to it IME.  I wouldn’t go ‘on drugs’ until one of my symptoms became so overwhelming that was losing my ability to control myself … for about 6 months I was seriously considering stalking a person I know and fighting the urge every day. I guess that each one of us has some kind of mental wake-up call that we need psychiatric-supervised chemical help, rather than trying to white-knuckle it over and over.  Sounds to me like this last month may have been yours. Hi Joanne! I’ve been on Zoloft fora year or two, and I’m  impressed with it. It actually makes me want to sleep before midnight (!), wake up when others have their breakfast, keeps me generally sleeping with only a *normal*amount of nightmares, and has me feeling… well, like a *normal* person, whatever that is.I’m deeply grateful to life and the pdoc who gave me this: My life isn’t a bowl of roses, but it sure isn’t hell on earth either. I’ve been on a series of other meds before, though I don’t know if the names tell you anything: Nefadar, Tymelyt etc.But this is better, less side-effects, and enourmously more expensive than anything else I’ve ever tried. Hi!

why would the dentist want buspar also?

Because there have been tests showing that bruxism (teeth grinding, jaw pain etc) increases with Zoloft and PTSD.  The Dentistry Guide at About.com can direct you to the research. The buspar somehow controls these involuntary reactions, mostly when we are sleeping. Smile and there will be something to smile about! Well, I was looking at an herbalist recommendation page earlier this week and there was a discussion of kavakava.  If one is taking kava kava, apparently one is not to take buspar also. ???? Anyway, you might want to send some info to your psych … it seems he/she needs an update or two.  Or, perish the thought, you might want to ask your dentist to talk to your psych. I had another woman (the receptionist at my CPA’s office) who was having the same symptoms on zoloft and everyone was working on a TMJ diagnosis.  She talked to her psych (who then looked it up) and got immediate relief with buspar. And, no, I don’t mind taking the Buspar also.  Not only does it give me a ‘hit’  and let me know when I am really in anxiety, but also its dosage can be changed (and has been changed) irrespective of the zoloft dosage to give me relief from different symptoms.  YMMV Smile and there will be something to smile about! ears is part of it. Zoloft has never been recomended for me. Have had enough of my current pdoc. Told my therapist I needed to move on, medications and treatments are

essential

and I’m getting no where with this guy.

Well, I don’t know the story with other SRIs, only with Zoloft.  If they all have the same mechanism of working in the brain, I wouldn’t be surprised if an anti-anxiety medication wouldn’t help with mouth-clenching. I think that you’d better talk to a professional about this, or go visit the dentist at About.com.  He has a lot of experience (from my mouth among others) with the stuff that goes wrong in a mouth due to PTSD. Yes. They are only just getting up to date on kava, so they are naturally hesitant. It seems sensible to be cautious as it does have an antidepressant & antianxiety effect, perhaps indicating that it works on the same pathways. Certainly kava intensifies the effects of booze and makes you much sleepier. Also, while kava has been used safely for a long time, it has no track record of being used alongside antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs to speak of. To the best of my knowledge, there is little research in this area, yet it could be of huge importance.

Anyway, you might want to send some info to your psych … it seems he/she needs an update or two.  Or, perish the thought, you might want to ask

At the moment I am a bit in shock really as I am still absorbing the fact that I was shamed into staying on drugs that were so bad for me, and which seem to have done permanent damage. Now though, it seems I will be getting help soon from someone a bit more informed, purely to process the trauma and work cognitively, alongside some art therapy to process it all on a psychodynamic level also. And yes, I think I will be presenting that study to my doctor on my next visit.

I had another woman (the receptionist at my CPA’s office) who was having

Yes. I will pursue Buspar if things do not even out and kava gets too expensive when the chemical guys jump on board. In the last year, the price has doubled for one brand, in line with increasing popularity! I hear some big names have started plantations of kava with their eyes on big profits. A slightly ominous prospect indeed.

And, no, I don’t mind taking the Buspar also.  Not only does it give me a ‘hit’  and let me know when I am really in anxiety, but also its dosage

Don't know what to think?

Question:

Well I thought I would come to this NG for some input. My girlfriend and I have been together for three years now. When we met she was abusing volume and was on her last leg, just darn near living in her car but always had here pills. I took her in and was able to stop the pill taking execept for a few incidents. Anyhow this takes us to where we are now. A few weeks ago I noticed that she was acting the same as on volume. I was at my last string when she finally told me she had been to the doctors for anxiety attacks and depression. She claimed that she was diagnosed before we had met.  Her doctor, a few weeks ago prescribed her xanax and zoloft to there maximum dose. Now I have read a few internet sites on anxiety attacks and I have not witnessed one episode.  In fact I have not seen any depression or sadness throughout our relationship. She has told me recently that she can tell when one is coming so she just leaves to her moms to deal with it. So I guess my question is, are pills something that can be abused or should I look farther into the anxiety attacks? Can a family doctor diagnose anxiety and depression? Thanks very much for your input.         Ken

Hi Ken! It’s very hard to give you good advice without knowing a lot more about your GF.  Sometimes a family doctor can diagnose anxiety, panic or depression, but your best bet is for her to see a psychiatrist to be diagnosed properly.  I’ve hidden some pretty whopper panic attacks and no one knew I was going through them at the time.  It is possible she’s had and hidden them well.  I’m not a doctor and I wish I could help you more.  Please post other info about your GF if you have any and maybe someone else here can give you more insight.  Sorry! - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well I thought I would come to this NG for some input.

Dear Ken, Welcome to ASAP!!! Yes, a family doctor can diagnosis and treat anxiety and depression. However, it is in anyones best interest to go to a psych doctor to be diagnosed and treated, they know much more about anxiety and depression than a MD. I am not surprised that you haven`t witnessed any panic or depression in your girlfriend. We tend to cover up these disorders quite well. My husband very rarely can tell when I am having a bad time. My mother has told me she cannot believe that I have an anxiety disorder, I can be at her home with high anxiety and yet come across cheerful and calm. However, it takes great stength and energy to give the appearance of calm and control, it actually increases our anxiety and depression in the long run. It is also very hard for many people with an anxiety disorder or depression to confide in another person about their disorder. We fear rejection and judgement, all we want is acceptance and an attempt at understanding us. Perhaps that is why she didn`t tell you right away. Maybe she has been hurt by someone over this in the past. Xanax can be abused, however people who take benzo`s for anxiety disorders usually don`t abuse them. As long as she follows her doctors instructions on how to take the xanax, she should be okay. If she takes the Xanax for an extended period of time she will become dependent on them. What that means is she can never quit Xanax cold turkey, if she does it could make her quite sick. When the time comes to get off Xanax she will need to wean slowly under her doctors care, she may experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Same goes with Zoloft, she should never quit cold turkey, but to wean off them under a doctors care. I know you must feel confused by all of this. You must care alot for her for you to post at this newsgroup to learn more about her meds and disorder. The best thing you can do for her is to support her unconditionally, she will do go far with you love and support. Anger and ill spoken words( not saying you have done this) hurt more than people can imagine. She needs to feel safe. Also educate yourself about her meds and disorder, knowledge is power, you will also be able to help her better if you understand the nature of this beast. Here is a link to a great website on anxiety disorders. Make sure you check out the family and friends link on this page, you will find some info and support for the *support* person of an anxiety sufferer. http://panicdisorder.about.com/health/panicdisorder/index.htm?COB=hom… I wish the both of you much luck and take care.  he started me on too much paxil 20mgs and to little xanax.5mgs.  I called him and told him i was still having panic attacks and he told me i could up the xanax and that 20 mgs of paxil was for depression.  so then i went to 30mgs of paxil then 40mgs then 50mgs.  i had to wait 3 months to see a psychiatrist. donny – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Question:

I have just been put on Wellbutrin SR 150 mgs twice a day (morning and night) for ADD and depression symptoms(diagnosed 4 weeks ago).  I tried Ritalin, but it made depression worse, so now I have been on Wellbutrin for 3 days.  My depression is no better and I seem to be lightheaded (in a daze). My son, age 7 (ADHD/ODD/Depression) has also been put on Wellbutrin 75 mgs twice a day, he has been on it three days and does not show much improvement with Depression. He seems to be going around in a daze, but still very emotional.  He is also on Ritalin and Clonidine. He was weaned off Paxil a week ago. Can anyone tell me if this effect of Wellbutrin is common (the glazed look)? Does this wear off??  When does Wellbutrin start to really help??  Also, my son’s appetite has been effected and he does not need that.  He is already underweight. Is the appetite suppression temporary, or a long term effect of medication?  Also, when does the jitteryness and agitation go away?  My son has had an hour and a half of that to deal with at school before he is able to calm down.  The teacher is beside herself during that time. If any of you can help us, I would appreciate it.   Thanks. Penzack

Response:

My understanding from everything I have read and talked to others is fogginess in the head is common and can take up to 2 weeks for the body to adjust to it. The appetite is probably the Ritalin.  That is a normal side effect.  My son has this too, but the Clonadine he takes at nite works well and I let him eat alot then.  He is 7 lbs. underweight. Hi Penzack: I’ve been on Wellbutrin, and Dexedrine spansule ( long acting ) for six months, and haven’t encountered the side-effects you describe. Wellbutrin takes seven days to build up the blood levels to be effective. One possibility, might be simple anxiety ( that sounds sick ) but anxiety has a way of producing physical symptoms. The wellbutrin has actually helped me to reduce my anxiety. Let me know if I can be of more help. Regards, David. I have just been put on Wellbutrin SR 150 mgs twice a day (morning and

night)

I didn’t take Wellbutrin, my son did.  All I can tell you is it takes time to build up in your system.  The psych said up to four weeks. Mark settled down after a few weeks.  We did find, however, after long term use (two years) Wellbutrin seemed to bring out an argumentative, agressive streak in him.  We had to take him off of it.  He’s the dreamy, inattentive ADHD type, with some depression (although that has thankfully begun to lift, I think with maturity.  He’s beginning to gain some control over his own life, and he’s happier for it.  He’s 18 now) — Ann Illegitimi non Carborundum annbal*at*thecia*dot*net

Response:

Different people have different responses.  It often takes Wellbutrin a while to show any significant benefit–I’ve been on it 4 months now and I’m still seeing changes. I _wish_ Wellbutrin suppressed _my_ appetite.  On Ritalin, before it quit working for me, I managed to lose something like 30 pounds.  Since I’ve been on Wellbutrin I’ve gained that back and maybe a wee bit more. — — –John Reply to jclarke at eye bee em dot net

Hi, Just wanted to mention here that I am using Wellbutrin SR for smoking cessation.  I was to take 2 pills a day, but had to cut back to 1, as I was getting dizzy spells, and could not sleep at night.  As for my appetite, I am just the opposite, I am gaining too much weight. As for the glazed look, I felt dopey, not tired, but all in all it has helped me in my quest to stop smoking.

You might want to check out this web page "http://www.mayohealth.org/usp/html/202098b.htm".  It’s a clinical trial overview of the drug.   I’ve been taking wellbutrin for only about 3 to 4 weeks.  When my dose was initially doubled up to 300 mg per day (in 2 doses) boy, did I get some un-nerving side-effects!  Heavy dissiness that would come in waves, feeling quite ‘out of it’, yet being more interactive with others.  Strange huh?  I also noticed that I was having trouble maintaining my tolerance level, ("snapping out" more easily) I believe that this was caused also by the cesasion of paxil over the last couple of weeks as well (withdraw simptoms).   I was also having a great deal of trouble sleeping through the night — 12 to 7, became 2 – 4.   I was very concerned about the side effects, especially the waves of dissiness.  They seemed almost like a rush that would make my nerves tingle and my eyes want to roll back in my head.  After discussing them with my doctor she cut me back to 1/2 doses. I am going to continue with the medication because of its reputation of becoming more effective with less noticeable side-effects as time goes on. If you are concerned by all means talk to your doctor, perhaps he/she may be able to suggest something to help him through this tough time.  I hope that your son (as well as myself) soon start to notice the more positive effects of Wellbutrin. Hang in there.

I am not against Wellbutrin, please don’t take this post that way. I just want to point out that Wellbutrin, like ANY medication or herbal supplement should be tested on you in low doses before you make a decision on whether it is for you. I nearly had a heart attack on 5mg of Wellbutrin.. because of an allergic reaction. My sister stopped eating altogether when they put her on it. Please, everyone, be safe. ~Wendy

Wellbutrin was the first drug that I took for treatment of my ADD and depression. It worked pretty well in the short time that I took it – it really helped my concentration, and I liked the appetite suppression aspect of it since I’m overweight, but my body just couldn’t tolerate it. I got dizzy, sleepy yet hyper at the same time, nervous, shaky, headachey, and just a feeling of sickness and toxicity – a bad taste in my mouth. I put up with it for a while, tried cutting back the dosage, but it only kept getting worse. I think my body just wasn’t excreting it well. Wellbutrin is in a class by itself. It’s not like any other drug. From what I understand, it’s not a reuptake inhibitor, and they are unsure as to what exactly the action is that it takes to make seratonin, norepenephrin and dopamine more available. Although it’s classed as an antidepressant, it actually acts like a stimulant on the CNS. Personally I don’t do too well on stimulants. Low doses of caffiene and dexedrine, ritalin, etc, don’t have much effect. Higher doses start to have a beneficial, calming effect, helping my concentration, etc, but then after a time I start to get sick, dizzy, nervous, headachey, etc etc, and the symptoms get progressively worse, as if it’s building up in my body and not being excreted, and making me sick. But in general I think I have a pretty sensitive system. In all the drugs I’ve tried since (Nortriptaline, Prozac, Effexor) I’ve only ever needed the lowest dose of the drug for effectiveness. I know people who take Wellbutrin and do great on it. I have a young cousin who takes it for ADD and it has had no negative side effects. My ex-husband takes it for alcohol addiction, and he said the only side effect was the loss of appetite. I would say that if the bad side effects, the dizziness and such continue, and you don’t seem to be getting any positive effects, then talk to your doctor about switching to something else. There are many other drugs out there you can try if Wellbutrin doesn’t work. wherever, at primenet dot com wherever you are…there you go.

I have a 7yr old child who is on Ritalin, Clonidine and Wellbutrin 150mg SR once daily.  It will take up to 4 weeks before your body starts to effectively absorb the medication and then you will start to see results. it is a slow progress, you can’t expect to notice a difference in just a few days.  Just don’t give up.
