Weaning off SANSERT
Question:
Hi all! I’ve been lurking with a headache for over a week & decided to join in. I have daily headaches, some sinus, tension(? I guess, tho not a tense person), new allergies, vascular & medication side effects. I have had Migraines since exactly 6mos after a total hysterectomy in 1982. Migraines have improved thru prayer, believe it or not…less frequent & not as severe, which is GREAT! But I still do get them. I’ve been on Inderal 120mg LA for 10yrs & my reg DR won’t d/c it cuz I had an odd allergic reaction to Imitrex…a blood clot in a coronary artery…long story. I used to rely on Fiorinal, but found the rebound headaches were worse. I just use Excedrin migraine & Excedrin PM or ecotrin…doesn’t help much & I’m sure I get rebounds from Excedrin too, but I HAVE to take something!! I have alot of other serious illnesses also & take Tylox & Soma for those. I DID stop the nutrasweet cuz I heard it could be a cause, but haven’t noticed much difference, except a little weight gain from caloric beverages…oh well! One thing I do recommend for ANY headache that helps ALOT & sometimes dissolves them. 1) a great husband who massages my forehead with "red Tiger Balm"…feels great & works for me. Sometimes, I can’t take the scent or know this one’s not goin’ away, so I wipe the balm off 2) Tiger balm to neck muscles & back of head 3) ICE packs to forehead & back of neck…it just soothes, doesn’t quite eliminate headache 4) Tiger balm on the sinuses To recover from a Migraine, I start with ginger ale, saltines, Haagendaz vanilla ice cream & chicken soup. It works every time…I may be on this for a few days, but it helps the nausea, puts something in the stomach & brings some nourishment. I hope this can help any of you! ~Stacie~ Lady O writes:
Hi all, I’ve been on Sansert since February. No real side effects (lucky me!), a slight bit of nausea when I first started, that’s it. Well, about two weeks ago, my legs started swelling. I mean, *really* swelling. I put up with it for a couple of days, until my husband looked at them and cried, "You have to see a doctor!" So, I went into the ER, no problems with my kidneys, call your "regular" doctor (whoever the h*ll that is!) take this Lasix and potassium, blah blah blah. I finally called my pain doctor, who told me it’s probably not the Sansert after this long, but better wean off of it anyhow, just in case, and we’ll see. OMG!!! I have had the most awful headache since last Monday!! I’ve been into the ER twice (*after* the first visit, because the first ER was out of dilaudid, and the morphine didn’t work, and I didn’t feel like waiting/fighting/arguing for more, and I ended up in a different ER the next day, that *HAD* dilaudid!!!), and although I’m slightly better today, I’m still counting the minutes until I can get to the pharmacy to get my refills. The Maxalt finally pooped out on me after so many days of use. How long am I going to have to endure this headache before my brain realizes that no more Sansert is coming down the chute, thank you very much?? Even if the Sansert *isn’t* causing my legs to swell, I’ll stay off of it, just so I can avoid this headache every six months. . In the meantime, I’ve got a call into the pain doc. I know that *he* knows how to dose that morphine . . . It’s similar to LSD & has something to do with Seratonin. You are right . . . they still say you can’t take it for more than six months. I figured that since I’ve been on it since February, my time was almost up, anyhow. I think that doctors consider it to be a "last ditch" effort to prevent headaches. I have had a tremendous decrease in my headaches, but I think it is more due to the fact that I’ve eliminated aspartame from my diet, rather than the Sansert. I’m still plugging along, waiting for this stuff to get out of my system for good. I’m not taking it any more, period! Lady – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was told that Sansert has a 6 month protocol. That is, no one should remain on it for more than 6 months at a time. My experience was that it worked well for that length of time, after which I started getting what they called "breakthrough headaches". Over a course of a couple of years, I was on it for a total of 2 six month periods. I believe that it is used mainly to "break a cycle" of headaches & is not intended for long term use (Caveat: This was many years ago & might be outdated information). I wouldn’t discount the Sansert yet. I’ve been on Sansert since February.

Just a thought…I often had side effects hit me well into a therapy. I didn’t get my first allergic reaction to Topomax until 8 months into it. They suspect it was a hormonal conflict, but still…you never know what will cause a reaction. I wouldn’t discount the Sansert yet. I feel for you though, I know how those withdrawal headaches feel and it’s not pretty. I’ll be praying for you cause some days…that’s all we got! Michelle

Cost of inhalers….
Question:
As a recently diagnosed asthmatic, who is happy that the medications work for her, I am wondering about the cost of the inhalers. I am using Proventil and Flovent. What is the approximate cost of a canister of these medications, and is there any place that is preferable to order them from? I generally get my medications from AARP as I do a lot of traveling (no choice) and they can mail them to me where ever I am… but the cost of these meds has me a bit frightened. Not being able to breathe has me a bit frightened, too, at times! Mary
Response:
I don’t know the cost of Proventil as I use generic albuterol. Flovent is about 75 USD per canister. I use two canisters a month when I’m taking 4 puffs x2 day. That’s a lot of money, yes, but I sorta have this thing about breathing, I like it. I’m lucky in that I have prescription coverage that allows me to mail order my medications in 90 day supplies for only a co-pay of 20.00 for name brand drugs or 7.00 for generic. It’s just the Walgreen’s down in Florida that they use and Walgreen’s bills my insurance company. Yeah, it can get expensive. My doc and I sat down and figured up what it would cost me out of pocket for all the meds I take each month. It would cover the payment on a new Porche. <sigh Loki – who loves fast cars… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – As a recently diagnosed asthmatic, who is happy that the medications work for her, I am wondering about the cost of the inhalers. Mary Lu, can you use Express Scripts? They are at 1-800-696-3760. They are another "mail" pharmacy, and I’ve found them very reasonable. Admittedly, I am getting the prices set for my HMO, and am being sent several refills at once (only maintenance meds qualify, but your drugs WOULD be maintenance), but I only pay about $5/pop for Ventolin. Be sure to ask your doctor to specify the generic, which at least can be done for the Proventil. I’ll bet if you call them, they’ll give you a price over the phone. Singulair and Children
Question:
Thanks for the help. Brian’s chest specialist is planning to substitute Singulair for Flovent. My husband and I are still deciding whether to stop the Flovent and change to Singulair or put up with the behaviour changes and leave him on Flovent. The Flovent does work. I’ve been using the other powerful effective steroid Pulmicort for some nine months and it’s done me a whole lot of good. Last month I started taking Singulair. Didn’t notice any effect for a few days. But now, thirty days later, I’m using a whole lot less of the rescue inhaler (albuterol) And from time to time, I’m forgetting to take the Pulmicort. I can’t believe your doctor want’s to stop the Flovent before seeing what effect the Singulair may have. (From the point of view of "If it works, don’ mess with it." Are you sure you read him right?
Response:
I may be a little late with this response. My son has been sporatically on Singular since he was 3 y.o… The reason for only being on it once in a while is because it gave him headaches. It took me a while to figure out they were related to the Singular, but it is listed as a side effect. Our doctor initially had given him a 5mg chewable. Then had us break it in half when the headaches started. The headaches continued so I gave up on it until recently I’ve tried him on 1/2 tablets again (he is 5 now) and he seems to do better on them. Just FYI …keep it in mind that there are side effects to the Singular. Marina – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks for the help. Even my 10-year old, for whom Singulair proved ineffective, whined the other day he wishes he could take it again, it tasted so good. Crushing it and sprinkling it in something should be no problem for him. ~Jacy

Hi, I’m on flovent since 1999, i’ve never had behavior and personality affects and never heard of some in children. You may try to check other places than flovent side effects. It’s working well, for singulair, headache can occur, if it doesn’t disappear after 2-3 days see your MD to quit singulair. Singulair work well in 1/3 of the peoples, there’s majority of children in this 1/3, another 1/3 get some result, and finally 1/3 don’t get any benifit. You can see result 2-3 days after the first treatment. Don’t quit flovent, for your child don’t worry you’re in the "terrible 2 years" period, they always say no, it like the small angel tranform itself in a little devil! Good luck! Going through a hard time after many years
Question:
Hi Everyone, my name is Augest. I am twenty nine and i have panic disorder and ocd sinc the age of 11. I was on zoloft fot eight years and recently weaned myself off to try and go it alone. A week ago all my symptoms returned and I have been having attacks 24/7 since then. I am so despondent. I had to drop my online college course, put my part time job on hold and delay my business I’m working on starting. All I can do is have attacks. I’m waiting for the zoloft to kick in, but I feel like a failure for having to go back on it. I have a feeling I will have to be on medication for the rest of my life if I am going to be able to function. I am so sad. Was I stupid to try and go it alone? Has anyone else tried and failed? Please write to me, as I need someone to talk to who understands. Always, Augest

Oh yeah, I am dealing with this right now. Putting the job on hold, med changes, etc. Actually, I did try to wean myself off of my AD a couple of times and not with good results. You are not a failure because you need medication. Would someone call I diabetic a failure? No. You are going to be fine. If you need your medication, there is nothing wrong at all with it. Good Luck, Vicki

Hi Augest! You could take a benzodiazepine such as Xanax for your current panic attacks until the Zoloft kicks in. Bet you wouldn’t feel like a failure if you had to go back on a blood pressure or diabetes med. You might be disappointed, but you wouldn’t feel like a failure. I have a feeling I will have to be on medication for the rest of my life if I am going to be able to function.
You never know. At this point in time, you have to go back on. I am so sad. Was I stupid to try and go it alone? Has anyone else tried and failed? Please write to me, as I need someone to talk to who understands.
I’ve tried to discontinue meds for panic disorder and depression on several occasions, but find I do best on a combo of Zoloft, desipramine, and Klonopin. Otherwise I start having panic attacks when driving on the freeway and start getting depressed. I’ve been on Zoloft for 10 years, desipramine for about 5 years, and Klonopin for 16 years. I have tried to discontinue all of these meds on one or more occasions and found I needed to stay on them. I think it’s a good idea to try to see how one does off a med from time to time. Also I have always tried to get down to the minimal effective dose for every med I’m on. Always, Augest

I think you are right, Chip. A minimal dose is best. I sometimes wonder what this drug is doing to my body longterm which is why I wanted off. I’m taking xanax as I wait for the zoloft to kick in, but it is not working as effectiely as it used to in combating the panic attacks. I wish I knew why. Used to be I’d take one pill and sleep like a baby, now it barely effects me. I guess I’m in for a lot of long nights ahead. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Augest

That’s understandable. Don’t forget about the adverse effects untreated long term anxiety and depression can have on the body. To say nothing of all the suffering. I’m taking xanax as I wait for the zoloft to kick in, but it is not working as effectiely as it used to in combating the panic attacks. I wish I knew why.
Maybe when the Zoloft was in effect, you needed less Xanax for anxiety relief. Currently your baseline anxiety level is way up, so you need more Xanax. That should change once the Zoloft kicks in. Used to be I’d take one pill and sleep like a baby, now it barely effects me. I guess I’m in for a lot of long nights ahead.
I’d use the Xanax in generous enough doses to knock the anxiety level way down and block panic attacks untill the Zoloft kicks in. Chip
Response:
Hi Augest, I’ve been where you are now. I tried lowering my Zoloft dose a few times to see if I still needed it. The panic attacks did return at the lower dose. Your body is adjusting to the Zoloft now and that may be adding to your anxiety. How much Zoloft are you starting at ? Your "ride" may be smoother if you gradually go up in 50 mg increments every 2 weeks. If you’re in a hurry and can "tough it out", then maybe you can go up in higher doses. Follow your doctor’s directions and keep him/her updated. Maybe you need a benzo like clonazepam or xanax to relieve your anxiety right now. Tell your doc how you’re feeling and see what he/she recommends. Take it easy : ) Tony

Hi Tony, I got the xanax, but it isn’t as effective on me as it used to be. I’m trying to tough this out. I’m hoping I can keep my zoloft levels low. I started at 50mg two days ago. I can feel the zoloft trying to work, but there just isn’t enough of it in my system yet to be effective. My doctor said the same thing as you, to increase in two weeks. I’m going to do that. I’d like to stay under my old dose of 100mg though. I didn’t like the side effects. We’ll see what happens. Thanks for the support. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Augest

Hi Augest, I’d hate to throw a monkey wrench into your progress but I have made the switch from Zoloft to Effexor XR because it seemed that Zoloft had stopped working after about 6 years. This probably won’t happen to you. I may have just been completely burned out from constant stress at work for many years. Anyway, I have found that Effexor XR is a very smooth med, does not mute my emotions and doesn’t have sexual side effects. That’s my case, it may not be the same for you. For instance, I initially went from Zoloft to Lexapro and was incredibly tired all the time from the Lexapro. You may fare well on Lexapro. Effexor XR is an SNRI (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor). Good luck with the Zoloft. 100 mg was my therapeutic dose although I did have some success at 50 mg when my stress levels were low. Tony

– I’ve heard that is one of the more stimulating ones – so if you are anxiety prone, you might get more anxious with this one – but I have not tried it myself. For bipolar, lithium with some long-term benzo seems to be a first choice, or tegratol, or Valproate. I used to take Xanax for panic but I think i had the panic from too high a Synthroid dose. I only take it now very rarely but my Synthroid has been reduced since then about 40%. Squiggles
Response:
It seems to me that that Wellbutrin is not the best choice for someone with your conditions. I’m only going on memory of the many posts here by other members and various links supplied also. I took Wellbutrin and was suffering from mood swings. I ended up hypomanic and had to stop. Well, I’m not the word of God about this. Just check into it. Good luck. Carrie ;o)

As always, the effects depend on the individual, and I am not a medical pro. However, I am ramping up on Wellbutrin myself. Your results may vary, especially since I am very responsive to any neuro drug I can find (one drink gives me a buzz, one cup of coffee wakes me right up, one dose of Benadril makes me a zombie for 24 hours) Wellbutrin claims to be very low on side effects (it claims to be one of the few ADs that rarely cause sexual side effects). The only ones I have noticed from personal experience are diminished appetite and weight loss, which are fine since I’m overweight to begin with. BTW, that’s why anorexia and bulimia are contraindications. The other big contraindication is alcohol. Stay completely dry while on Wellbutrin. Alcohol may interfere with other ADs, but with Wellbutrin it can cause seizures. If you can be (or already are) a teatotaller, this should be no problem for you. My prescriber is also trying to find an antianxiety med that I can tolerate (I have nasty side effects with Effexor and Celexa), so I’m guessing that Wellbutrin isn’t itself an antianxiety. But for me, it is good at treating depression. I sensed immediate results during the first week at the 50mg/day level (standard therepudic dose is 300 mg/day). Again, I am likely _very_ responsive to Wellbutrin, so you may have to wait several weeks at a higher dose. —–BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE—– Version: PGPfreeware 6.5.8 for non-commercial use <http://www.pgp.com iQA/AwUBPIUmCkdroV5D+kXPEQJumQCgrRN47bk6RWTmoZnHmLKB2l4LmoEAnR58 AC1BP8lgKRyh8WCV6ON+kh19 =08UA —–END PGP SIGNATURE—–

Complaints of Sexual Dysfunction
Question:
A new study found that patient complaints of sexual dysfunction caused by antidepressants are almost two times greater than believed by physicians, according to a report presented at the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting. Researchers studied 6,297 patients enrolled at 1,101 primary care offices throughout the U.S. and evaluated 10 different new generation antidepressants. Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norephinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are associated with a higher rate of sexual dysfunction, newer antidepressants such as bupropion (Wellbutrin) and nefazodone have shown a lower incidence of the problem. "The SSRIs are known to cause sexual dysfunction as a side effect, but until now, there hasn’t been a study to look at all the new generation antidepressants to see how they compare," said Dr. Anita Clayton, associate professor and vice chair of the Department of Psychiatric Medicine at the University of Virginia and lead investigator of the study. "Physicians and patients are generally reluctant to talk about sexual problems. Therefore, physicians often underestimate the prevalence of antidepressant-associated sexual dysfunction and the impact on patients, as shown in this study." Wellbutrin SR (bupropion HCI) Sustained-Release was associated with the lowest rate of sexual dysfunction (25 percent) after Wellbutrin (bupropion HCI) (22 percent), compared with an average of 40 percent with the SSRIs venlafaxine (Effexor) and mirtazapine (Remeron). The prevalence rate of sexual dysfunction ranged from 7 percent of patients receiving Wellbutrin SR to 23 to 30 percent for patients receiving the other antidepressants, including fluoxetine (Prozac), citalopram (Celexa) and venlafaxine XR. Thanks, Tammy, I know all about that, since I’ve been using ibuprofen (specifically Motrin 800 mg.) for over 13 years. I was more concerned with the damage to my kidneys, since it can also cause damage there. By the way, have you read any of the new research that has found ulcers to be caused by bacteria, rather than stress and/or medications, and cured with the use of both acid reducers and antibiotics? This doesn’t really apply to ulcers caused by overuse of NSAIDs, but it was of interest to me, since the last ulcer I had was treated by my doctor with anti-stress meds (over 20 years ago). CAT 248/237/135 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – In article et, I’ve just about lived on Motrin for over 15 years, and I think as long as you take it with food, it’s not particular about what kind of food. Richie – I’m SOOOO sorry!! Guess you do get that a lot. Just makes me nuts when guys – even well-intentioned ones – try to give me advice on problems like these
I’ve been using ibuprofen since before it was available OTC for cramps – still use 600mg most of the time, too, and that’s not something that feels worse these days… It’s the irritability, mood swings & bloating. I’ve actually added some legal 15-ish g. treats lately because my life is very stressful at the moment and it just helps – maybe I need to time those! (our house is for sale…dealing with being neat & clean & showable 24×7 is the worst…especially for someone who works 40+ hours a week outside of the house, as well as all that needs doing inside!) Past couple months, after adding some extra carb treats & watching the calendar, I’ve noticed I lose 2-3 lbs. right after my TOM, and then stop losing no matter waht for the 10-14 days preceeding & during. Soon as it’s done, whoosh, 2 more lbs. down… This time I’ll try some more legal treats and some strong chamomile tea! Glad I don’t have to live with me

Victoria, I’ve just about lived on Motrin for over 15 years, and I think as long as you take it with food, it’s not particular about what kind of food. Unless I’m mistaken, you just need something in your stomach when you take it to keep it from boring a hole through your stomach lining, and any kind of food will work, so wouldn’t necessarily have to be bread or milk. Meat should work, too, I’d think. At least it does for me. CAT 248/237/135

Ack! valerian root smells like perfumed manure! The cats love it, though. I give them some when they get too rowdy at night. Personally, I’ll stick with ibuprofen for the cramps. I’ve had almost no arthritis symptoms since lowcarbing, but I generally went for naproxen when I did, (despite its tendency to bore holes in a stomach less than full). — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

Audrey– A lot of us gals have problems with TOM…(a recent poster called it a visit from Aunt Flo. Loved that!). I’ve been on the pill and regular as clockwork for ten years. This WOE changed all that. Sometimes I’m early, sometimes I’m late. Usually the flow is heavier, whenever it arrives. I do need more carbs the week before (sometimes, but not as often, during). My solution: I allow myself 10-15g extra carbs for just as long as I need them. The trick is being honest with yourself when you need them. And make sure they’re "legal" carbs. I don’t allow myself "bad" carbs at all, even one or two animal crackers. I make sure the carbs are what I’d eat normally, just perhaps in higher quantity. Some other legal extra carb ideas: Wasa crackers with cream cheese and diabetic jam Iced coffee with extra cream and sweetener 1/2 c blueberries with a dash of cream 1/2 c cottage cheese with 1 T diabetic jam SF pudding made with cream and water You get the idea… =) Hope that helps. Depends are you brewing it "medicinal" strength? If not, it won’t work. 2 teaspoons (or 2 teabags) in 8 oz. water…let steep for 10 minutes. That’s medicinal strength herbal tea. Chamomile makes me relax!!! I USED to have PMS and depression like mad before low-carb. I was on zoloft for 2 years and since starting this WOL, I stopped zoloft cold turkey and started herbal supplements (primrose oil, etc.). I started Evening Primrose Oil and Progest Creme recently, in the hopes that these will help. Barb

Wummin, my doc tried me on Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Effexor and finally Parnate, which is an MAOI and quite dangerous if taken with certain foods and/or other drugs. I finally–like you, against her advice–quit cold turkey and started using St. John’s Wort. That, combined with this WOE, has just about solved my problem with depression, from which I suffered since I was about 13. If I’d know all this then, I might have had a happier time as a teen. Zoloft side effects
Question:
Hello, I started taking Zoloft last friday(25mg/day) and I’ve already started feeling more relaxed, but I’m getting some unpleasant side effects. I’m having problems concentrating & sleeping and my head feels heavy and as if an uncomfortable amount of presure was being applied to it. I’ve lowered my dosage to 5mg a day and the problems concentrating has mostly gone and the other problems aren’t as bad but are still there. Can I expect these side effects to go away with time? If so, how long? If they don’t go away, am I likely to have better luck with a different SSRI or to have the same problems? Also, I’m considering taking melatonin to help with sleeping. Does anyone have experience using melatonin with Zoloft? Steve
Response:
I have tried many SSRI’s for my anxiety, and have not found one I am completely happy with yet. I have consistently been on clonazepam, though, and it works wonderfully. My doctor says the SSRI’s have different side effects for everyone…your individual brain’s biochemistry will determine how well each one works for you and how many side effects you encounter. I am currently on Prozac, but it, like all the SSRI’s I have tried, have sexual side effects for me. But certainly some have been much better than others. Sexual effects aside, Zoloft was by far the worst for me (I couldn’t stop tensing up, grinding my teeth, even on 1/2 of the lowest dosage) while Paxil had the best anxiolytic effects. So my opinion would be to give it a shot. If the side effects remain, keep trying the other ones until you find one that works for you.

It is very common to have a increase in anxiety while weaning on anti-depressants. I’ve lowered my dosage to 5mg a day and the problems concentrating has mostly gone and the other problems aren’t as bad but are still there. Can I expect these side effects to go away with time?
They should go away with time. It is hard to say how long you will have to put up with these side-effects. Ask your doctor for a scrpt for a benzo, such as Xanax, or Klonopin, it will help with these side-effects. If so, how long? This varies from person to person, but hopefully not more than a few weeks. If they don’t go away, am I likely to have better luck with a different SSRI or to have the same problems?
All anti-depressants can cause a increase in anxiety while weaning on them. It really is a normal, and quite common to experience some side-effects while weaning on Ad`s. You could switch from Zoloft to Paxil, and find you have the same side-effects, or it is much worse on Paxil. No one can tell you how you will react on any medication, it is a matter of you getting on the med and seeing for yourself. Please don`t get discouraged, it does get better. Let me suggest instead of taking 25mgs of Zoloft, go to 12.5mgs, and do all your increases in 12.5mg increments, and stay at each increase for one week. You may find this helps lessen those side-effects you were feeling. We have a poster here that has had great success weaning on Zoloft in this manner. It can`t hurt to try. Unfortunately, sometimes to get better, we have to tolerate side-effects of certain meds, that will eventually help us. Also, I’m considering taking melatonin to help with sleeping. Does anyone have experience using melatonin with Zoloft?
I am not sure about the safety with taking Melatonin and Zoloft, so I can`t comment. If you are having problems with sleep, don`t take the Zoloft in the PM, take it in the AM. You could ask your doctor for a prescription for something to aid your sleep, Ambien from what I hear is good. Another option, and of course ask your doctor, is to take Benadryl, also known as "Diphenhydramine", it is a anti-histamine, but is quite a effective sleep aid. And is okay for long term use. Take care and hang in there, it will get better

I just recently started taking Zoloft also and had some side effects, too. I’ve been on it for about two weeks now and it seems to have gotten better. I noticed Jackie mentioned to you that Ambien is good for sleep. I take that also, and it knocks me out. I started out on 10 mgs. and down to 5 mgs. because I was feeling groggy the next day from it. I can sometimes now take 2.5 mgs. and still get a good night’s sleep. Hey, how did you do that? Does Zoloft come in tabs of 10 mgs which you cut in two? I wasn’t aware of that. Can I expect these side effects to go away with time? If so, how long?
The lower you start and the slower you raise the dose, the lesser the SE’s. A benzo on the side is also helpful. Yes, these SE’s should go away but it’s difficult to say when. You might experience some every time you up the dose. You should give Zoloft a fair trial of eight weeks on therapeutic dosage. Side effects may well disappear before that time but as you wean on very slowly (which is *good*) it may take a while. If they don’t go away, am I likely to have better luck with a different SSRI or to have the same problems?
If after eight weeks on a therapeutic dose the SE’s haven’t gone away – but there’s no reason now to think they won’t – it might be a good idea to try another SSRI. It’s often done and it’s done quickly as you don’t have to wean off of one first before being able to get on the other one. But this is not the time to think of that. First give Zoloft a fair trial. Also, I’m considering taking melatonin to help with sleeping. Does anyone have experience using melatonin with Zoloft?
Melatonin doesn’t seem the first choice med for insomnia. Do you take your Zoloft in the evening? In that case you might want to try to take it in the morning which might help with your insomnia. If insomnia is a product or symptom of PD it will get away when PD is treated properly. If you do need a med, try Ambien or Trazodone, I’d say IMO. Steve

Ideally a benzo should also help with sleeping and the feeling of pressure in your head. You may not call them that but these are also anxiety symptoms. Philip

Hi Steve, If it is not anxiety it is most definitly a side-effect of the Zoloft. It should pass with time. A benzo might help alleviate some of the symtpoms. Good Luck!! Jackie

I don’t understand how a benzo will help with headaches(?) I thought benzo’s only got rid of anxiety – the Zoloft has already done that. Ideally a benzo should also help with sleeping and the feeling of pressure in your head. You may not call them that but these are also anxiety symptoms.
Oh, I see. That’s interesting. I’ve never had those symptoms before taking zoloft. Steve

I was going to ask about this…Since I went to 100 mg, I have had a pressure in my forehead at times…Not a headache, but the kind of feeling you get when you realize that you’ve been tightening your forehead for hours…I know this could be anxiety, but my anxiety has been much better and I haven’t had this before…It’s almost like the Zoloft has the front of my brain in overdrive now…What are the long term affects of these drugs anyway…Do they permanently alter brain chemistry? I don’t feel different really, but I don’t want to find out when I’m done that I have permanent needs for these things… — Charles Phipps

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hello All, After starting Zoloft (100mg) 10 days ago I have been experiencing some uncomfortable side effects (nervousness, lightheadedness, irritability, etc.). At this time, the Zoloft seems to be inducing panic attacks, not preventing them. My doctor had warned me of this and advised me to "weather the storm" and give the meds a few weeks to take effect. Has anyone experienced similar side effects with Zoloft (or other SSRIs)? And, if so, how long did it take for these to subside? I realize that everyone reacts differently to meds, but I’m looking for some relief in the fact that I am not alone, and other people have shared similar experiences. Zoloft does indeed induce panic in the starting stages. Many doctors realize this, and start the Zoloft at a very low dose, increasing it gradually over a period of months. The starting dose can be as low as 12.5 mg every other day, working up to the therapeutic dose from there. Another way of fighting the panic in the early stages of Zoloft is with a short-term prescription for Xanax or another benzodiazepine during the initial high-anxiety period. If you are having trouble with the Zoloft, please suggest these ideas to your doctor. Hirsch address in header has been changed to avoid junk mail

Hi Danno I just started taking Zoloft also. My doctor started me out with 50mg and suggested that I take 1/2 for a while until I get used to it. I experienced some side effects; nausea, diareah, anxiousness; but after a week I was able to increase my dosage to the full 50mg. It has taken another week at the full dosage to feel O.K. The side effects seem to be going away. Now it’s time to see if it will really help me with my PA’s Good Luck, ttfn Kathy

I have also recently started taking Zoloft and the same has happened to me. My doctor also gave me the same advice. At this point I am on 100mg and also taking xanex once a day. I will continue this and see how it works. I know how you feel but hang in there.
