Pulmicort availability?
Question:
I am trying to find a way to get Pulmicort. My doctor gave me a sample of about two weeks’ worth. She also gave a prescription for some. I took this to the local CVS and their response, after a day of trying to order it, was that the manufacturer does not supply. Should I try a different chain of pharmacy’s and hope that their response is different or is there something I should know about? Suggestions appreciated. -j "He’s more machine now than man, twisted and evil." –Ben Kenobi, a long time ago.

Thanks. I have since contact the doctor again and had the prescription called through at the local Eckerd without an apparent problem. Maybe CVS is just being silly. -j "He’s more machine now than man, twisted and evil." –Ben Kenobi, a long time ago.

I checked the Walgreen’s website and they have it. I know CVS and drugstore.com don’t (or don’t list it if it is available). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am trying to find a way to get Pulmicort. I just picked up a refill from a local independent pharmacy on the way home from work. "Keep looking below surface appearances. Don’t shrink from doing so (just) because you might not like what you find." General Colin Powell

I thought that Pulmicort was supposed to be available by now in the US. I have the prescription from the Dr. and now that my son’s full size sample is fast running out, no pharmacy has it yet, but they have all attended the seminar for learning how to dispense it and provide instructions to the patient. They are all still waiting. Does anyone know what happened with the availability? I can get another from the Dr. in the meantime but I’m just curious… Mary-Ellen
I think another responder mention Jan 28 availability in US. I don’t know what’s causing the delay. Here is a link to the US Pulmicort Turbuhaler site (Astra): http://www.pltbhinfo.com/ Pulmicort DPI

Hi, I was in touch with the Pharmacy before the holidays and was told that the FDA had forced a reformulation of the drug. She said that the drug should be available on Jan 28,1998. Hope this helps. — Regards and God Speed, Gary W. Sandvik

I live in Canada and started using Pulmicort 5 years ago. It has truly changed the way I live with my asthma. I have had asthma since 1976 and had tried almost everything on the market. I started using Pulmicort and Rhinocort (for sinusitus and nasal polyps) and I feel like a new person. I hope the FDA will approve this terrific product for your use in the U.S. (No, I don’t work for Astra) Best of luck to you in the new year. Your northern neighbor.

Another Drowsy Day – Lexapro Update
Question:
Well, I took Lexapro at 7 PM last night and I am feeling incapacitated with drowsiness right now. This is not good ! I am starting to lose my patience with this med. It’s been a good 10 days of incapacitating drowsiness. Why bother taking a med at all if it’s going to incapacitate me ? I left a voice mail with my pdoc. I’ll have to wait to see what he thinks. I’m ready to axe this med and either go back to Zoloft at 100 mg or try something else. Does anybody have a recommendation for an SSRI or AD that relieves anxiety and depression without turning me into a sleepwalker ? Thanks, Tony — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Bipolar 2 and Self-Injury
Question:
Hello. I am a Canadian female, mid-40s, married, an at-home mother. I have diabetes type 2 since Dec. 1999, have suffered from depression for perhaps seven years now, and have been tentatively diagnosed with Bipolar 2 this past March by a psychiatrist. The doctor recommended I add Wellbrutin S.R. (150 mg x a day) to the Effexor XR (150 mg x a day) . I didn’t think that either meds were working, until earlier last week when my libido kicked in. (I was ‘neutral’, so to speak, for many months.) It was quite a pleasant experience for my husband and I. But then, within a few days, it’s as if my increased libido "overtook" me and I began to flirt (playfully, I would say, but with sexual overtones) with various men, men I didn’t even know, in a chat group. Without revealing too many details, one of these flirty episodes turned out badly yesterday evening. I took this *very* badly, and it triggered an episode of self-injury, something I hadn’t done in over twenty years. Along with the seemingly never-ending tears, I began to scratch – using my own fingernails – my upper and lower back, my upper chest, my breasts, my waist and parts of my legs. This crying/scratching last over one hour, until my husband’s 2nd attempt to calm me down worked. I share all of this with you not to be condemned, but to ask if the oral meds I am taking could be responsible for (1) my increased libido (where previously there was almost none), (2) this urge to flirt with strangers, and (3) thoughts and actions of self-injury. Thank you for listening. — Yvonne

Thank you for listening. To me, and I am in no way a doctor, it would seem that it is possible that the anti-depressants that you are taking are throwing you into a manic episode (it’s a common occurrence). If your pdoc thinks that you are bipolar then he should add a mood stabilizer into the mix. I suggest that you call him immediately and let him know what’s going on. Good luck
Thank you for responding, Hilaire, and for your advice. I hadn’t thought of the possibility of a manic episode. I saw my case-worker today and she said the same thing you did, plus she told me to stop taking the Wellbutrin. She’s also scheduled me for an "emergency" appointment to see the psychiatrist tomorrow (instead of waiting for the one I had for June 4th) to see what type of med would be better suited for my condition. I’m feeling somewhat better this evening, but the need to rock back and forth and to keep my body in some kind of motion is still with me. As well, I am extremely tired as if I haven’t slept in days. But, at least I know it’s only a few more hours before I see the psychiatrist. Again, thank you for replying. No problem
It sounds like you’ve got a good case worker. I also thought you should stop taking the Wellbutrin, but would never give out that advice on-line. Let us know how it goes. BTW – Wellbutrin made me wildly manic within a couple of hours of taking it for the first time. Hilaire WOW! For years I thought I was weird, have had many similar circumstances and at that time I was undiagnosed and manic. Whew, it was good to hear another woman stating that the same stuff happened with her. Definitely do something about the meds, you can’t go through life wrapped in gauze and afraid to talk to men for fear of the repercussions. Sounds like you have a very supportive husband girl, it takes a lot for our men to stay through the worst, but the best will come. My best to you and yours, Tanja
when taking wellbutrin,i was irritable(imagine that)so that my case manager thretened to resign.& i was flirtatious(to say how successful might be embarassing).what you’re experiencing might be related to medications,or you could be getting a bit hypo- or manic.I’m bd 1 but the effects are similiar, some enjoyable.Harry("not well")

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hello.
Good luck

Paxil Tiredness And Cut Back..
Question:
I am on day 5 of trying 15mg a day to see if that helps, but I’m experience some anxiety already along with a fuzzy feeling in my head.
Try reducing your dosage at just 2 1/2 mg at a time, and do that for at least a couple weeks before reducing it some more. It can take a while. You have time to mess with it, so you can go as slowly as you like. I’ve successfully reduced my Paxil to only 5 mg a day, plus .5 Ativan morning and evening. But I’m still sleepy. : ) Dot
Response:
Ken, I’ve been on Celexa for several years, and it is my "miracle drug". YMMV depending on your chemical reaction to any medication…. Good luck!!!
I’ve been on Celexa for 1year 3months. It took about 8 weeks to start working and I developed a lot of side effects; prickly skin, itching rash, funny taste, teeth grinding, yawning, diarrhea, gas, restless night legs, purple blotches, insomnia and some sexual side effects. My friend switched from Zoloft to Celexa and she said that the Zoloft side effects were worse than Celexa. So I’m wondering if I have had an atypical reaction. I only ocassionally experience a side effect now (thankfully) but my dosage was increased from 20mg to 40mg about two months after I started because I didn’t feel it working.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – May I ask what was the horrible experience you had with Celexa? I’m taking it also and am trying to confirm some things. Hi All.. I have been taking Paxil 20mg a day for the past 6 months for Panic and Anxiety. It has worked WONDERFUL!! I haven’t had a panic attack since around day 14 of starting paxil, after having a horrible experience with celexa. In the past month however, I am so tired I cannot seem to do anything at all. I don’t remember being THIS tired when I started paxil, or in the previous 4 months. I am on day 5 of trying 15mg a day to see if that helps, but I’m experience some anxiety already along with a fuzzy feeling in my head. Should I go back up to 20mg and deal with the tiredness? Any one have any ideas on how to combat the fatique? Thanks!
sure Ken… Celexa doubled if not tripled my anxiety in the 2 months of use.. my panic attacks tripled and were incredibly more intense.. i could not sleep.. and had restless leg syndrome.. i was always nauseaus.. and sometimes i had so much energy i didn’t know what to do with myself.. that could have been due to the anxiety though.. it basicially did to me the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do.. hope that helps!

I’m almost a week into weaning off Paxil CR, and going on to Lexapro. My PDoc called me a ‘textbook case of Paxil side effects’ – sleepiness, intense tiredness all the time, major concentration problems were the biggies. Actually at one time or another, I think I had every side effect except the sexual problems. I am on day 5 of trying 15mg a day to see if that helps, but I’m experience some anxiety already along with a fuzzy feeling in my head.
Are you working with a doctor on this? What is his/her advice? Can you start on another AD or a benzo while you wean off? Should I go back up to 20mg and deal with the tiredness? Any one have any ideas on how to combat the fatique? Thanks!
The best way I found to cope with the sleepiness and tiredness was to get *lots* of sleep. If I didn’t get at least 9 hours, I was hopeless at work. With that, and massive amounts of caffeine I survived. I am so relieved to be getting off that stuff. Gypsy’s Wife, Partner, Lover, and Life Companion

The big question is…is it working? I just started and I wonder what I’m
After like one or two weeks on it, I noticed myself getting a little antsy and wanting to do something, but I still felt down and didn’t enjoy anything. That was kind of wierd, but the next week the other half got better too. I couldn’t sleep right though, and I twitched/spasmed a fair amount in my sleep, (no other side effects though–oh, except I often wake up from dreams totally soaked in sweat, and I mean whole-body damp spot here) so I started taking a little dose of trazodone each night before bed. That combination worked really really well for quite a while. Several months later I really didn’t feel like I was getting much from it anymore. I also started feeling more and more drugged/groggy in the morning and found out that I no longer needed the trazodone to sleep (ie it didn’t seem to have worn off by morning). We increased the effexor dose, and I seemed to get worse (especially sleeping a lot) so I brought the dose back down, and also tried taking it before bed (since, heck, it seemed to be making me sleep). That actually helped. Currently, I’m taking effexor before bed and welbutrin in the morning and afternoon. I still twitch a lot, especially before I wake up–I think maybe it would be best to take the effexor like 4 hours before waking instead of before bed, but I can’t really manage that… I’m still far from the best I felt on the effexor, though. My wife’s also taking effexor now, and it has helped her quite a bit, although she has only been on it a few months, so I don’t know if it will change. By the way: you _really_ do have to take it at the same time every day. There have even been times where I’m pretty sure it needed to be taken with food to work well. Different for every person, though… — Robert Braddock

He wants me to have cholestrol test done not for anything other than high c runs in the family. He’s also booking me for a brain scan because my mother has anuerisms and they can sometimes run in the family. My blood pressure was good and my heart rate was good. This suprised me because it was thumping like a wild think while I was in the waiting room! He doubled up my dose of Zoloft to 50mg and gave me some more ativan. Thank God for ativan it seems to be the only thing that is keeping me sane these days. Oh also I am off work for at least another month. *Phew* I was worried about that because I am just not ready to go back there yet. I had a nice surprise visit from my brother tonight (who has only been to my place twice before in the past 8 years). It was a really pleasant visit. I really like him but we have never had a close relationship. I told the doctor that I had a good day on Sunday but then relapsed on Monday and ever since. He saw that as a good sign. At least I had one good day. I really like him, he is our new family doctor and I only started seeing him when I got this bought of PA he seems pretty thorough.
Dear Nancy, I`m glad to hear that your doctor visit went well. I agree with your doctor that your good day even though it was followed by a setback, is a good thing. You can`t have a setback unless you had made some progress to begin with. The 50 mg increase in your Zoloft dose is a big increase at one time for a person with an anxiety disorder. Just wanted to point that out in case your anxiety or side-effects increase a bit during the next few days. Make sure to use your Ativan during this period. Take care

This is good that you are having all of these tests and that so far, they are showing that you are doing well. This will take a big load off your mind once all the tests come back negative. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Andy, I’ve seen three "shrinks" and all three give me something different to work with. Each one though fizzled out, couldn’t get much more after the first few visits. YMMV and IME
Charla Hi Guy’s I’m starting to think that maybe I should find a new shrink. I pretty much have everything sorted out now, I can deal with the PA’s if I have to, and if I don’t have to, or don’t feel like sitting through one I go home….. to easy. I’ve got off the Xanax and Zoloft which was only making me worse and am now on Luvox and serapax, which works great. So everything is pretty cruzzy apart from the odd up and down. The problem I’m stuck with now I guess is best described as mild depression / mild constant background anxiety / mild emotional distress, no big problem, just slightly annoying. The thing is, I go to the Pdoc every week and go "this is how I feel and this is what’s going on ect" , but I don’t seem to be getting any new answers. Its always, take the meds, go to places for exposure and desensitisation of the PA’s, CBT, exercise, meditate and stop yourself as soon as you start getting in to any negative thought patterns. I feel like I talk, he listens, but doesn’t say much and what he does say I already know, and am doing it. Should I be getting more answers, and more response from him? or is that about all there is to it…. just keep going as I am and give things more time? The reason I’m asking is because I don’t want to spend more time and money building a repour with new Pdoc’s if the answers are going to be the same. Thanks. — Andy

dump him therapy is a collaborative event that is involving and goal oriented-listening is not productive to getting things done-the goal is to learn coping techniques and various ways to recover. LM

St. John's Wort and Kava for OCD and Anxiety?
Question:
The interesting thing with St. John’s Wort, is that it alters the ‘mood/mind’ enough to allow an objective and clear perspective of the Self. And therefore a clear insight into those parts of the Self that causes the depression. Is your intent to clear yourself of the depression?… or clear yourself of the sources of that depression?

After 6 weeks’ treatment, mean HAM-D at endpoint decreased to 11.54 on hypericum and to 12.20 on fluoxetine (P < 0.09), while mean Clinical Global Impression (CGI) item I (severity) was significantly (P < 0.03) superior on hypericum, as was the responder rate (P = 0.005). Hypericum safety was substantially superior to fluoxetine, with the incidence of adverse events being 23% on fluoxetine and 8% on hypericum. The commonest events on fluoxetine were agitation (8%), GI disturbances (6%), retching (4%), dizziness (4%), tiredness, anxiety/nervousness and erectile dysfunction (3% each), while on hypericum only GI disturbances (5%) had an incidence greater than 2%. We concluded that hypericum and fluoxetine are equipotent with respect to all main parameters used to investigate antidepressants in this population. Although hypericum may be superior in improving the responder rate, the main difference between the two treatments is safety. Brenner R, Azbel V, Madhusoodanan S, Pawlowska M Clin Ther 2000 Apr;22(4):411-9 BACKGROUND: Hypericum (St. John’s wort) has been shown to be as efficacious and well tolerated as standard antidepressants in the treatment of depression but has not been compared with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). OBJECTIVE: This study compared hypericum and the SSRI sertraline in the treatment of depression. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized study conducted in a community hospital, 30 male and female outpatients (19 women, 11 men; mean age, 45.5 years) with mild to moderate depression received 600 mg/d of a standardized extract of hypericum (LI 160) or 50 mg/d sertraline for I week, followed by hypericum 900 mg/d or sertraline 75 mg/d for 6 weeks. RESULTS: The severity of symptoms, as assessed by scores on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) and the Clinical Global Impression scale, was significantly reduced in both treatment groups (P < 0.01). Clinical response (defined as a or =50% reduction in HAM-D scores) was noted in 47% of patients receiving hypericum and 40% of those receiving sertraline. The difference was not statistically significant. Both agents were well tolerated. A post hoc power analysis indicated that failure to reach statistical significance between treatments resulted primarily from an absence of clinical differences rather than the small sample size. CONCLUSION: The hypericum extract was at least as effective as sertraline in the treatment of mild to moderate depression in a small group of outpatients.

Here is some info. I found on St. John’s Wort and OCD: "Gridrunner: Have you heard of some success using St. John’s Wort or 5-htp to lessen OCD? Dr. Jenike: Yes, there are a few cases where St. John’s Wort has helped OCD. In Germany, there are dozens of studies using SJW for mild to moderate depression, but its use for treating OCD is relatively new. I have tried it in quite a few patients, with not much success. Risa, Diet isn’t my problem right now. I fell on my knee in November and tore the cartilage so I have not been able to do any exercise at all. But I have maintained my weight (210 lbs). I’m hoping to have something done soon so that I can get back to at least going for walks. I’ve been practically housebound with this. I can’t even swim with this, so once it’s fixed I’m hoping with the wellbutrin and better diet that i’ve had to go to since being housebound that the exercise will start to help the pounds to drop. Did I forget to mention that I lost the weight without exercising? I had an infected toe at the time and could hardly walk myself. Sorry about your knee. I’ve had 6 knee surgeries so far and I can relate. (I played ice hockey in college. It’s murder on the knees.) Risa Be curious always! Effexor withdrawal got me into a whole lot of trouble – throwing up all the time, sick as a dog. Switching to Zoloft was a relief while it lasted, but now I’m on good old Prozac. It’s that same old bugaboo about everyone’s body chemistry being different…

Hello all, My doctor has given me two weeks’ worth of Effexor XR 37.5 mg. Does anyone have any experience with this SSRI/SNRI? I’ve been doing some searching online, and I’m looking for personal experiences as well as any contraindications for Effexor and antibiotics. TIA, Mellissa — **Insert Witty Sig File Here** —
I take 225 mg of effexor every day it is the only medicine that has accually worked. I have taken alot of others. I have had no problem taking effexor with antibiotics. any more question email back
Response:
I’m now on the max daily dose of effexor it’s the second time I’ve been on it. I have not experienced any side effects but remember when I came off it the last time I was ill for 3 days. I’m not looking forward to a repeat of that though. Pete

Hello, I just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my question – you’ve set aside some of my concerns. I’ve been taking it for 6 days now, and while I don’t notice a significant change, I am feeling more motivated. I hope this continues. What exactly is the ‘max dose?’ I am on 300 mg’s a day – 150 two times daily. Best, Luanne

Back when I was on it I was getting 375 a day (half in the am, half in the pm, and it was combined with Knolopin (sp?)) They told me then that it was the max therapeutic dose at the time. Weather or not that has changed in the past few years is beyond me. I cannot comment further because I was taught if you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all. *LOL* My experiences with psych drugs were not positive. Mellissa, I started taking effexor after weaning abit off Prozac. I had absolutely no side effects that I can think of. Now, it’s possible that having been on prozac so long, my body was use to the drug, as effexor is similar to prozac. But when I switched from Effexor to Wellbutrin I was out for the count for almost a week with fever, nausea, headaches etc. They did wear off. Everyone is different. Effexor is one of the drugs touted as being helpful for PTSD and while I gained weight on prozac, my weight stabilized on effexor. I’m on wellbutrin trying to lose the 60 lbs I put on while on prozac. http://www.mentalhealth.com/ This site can give you a great deal of information of the medications include adverse effects etc. As for anti-biotics, I have taken them several times while taking SSRIs and been told that there’s no problems with combining the two. I’ve been taking Effexor XR for about 8 months now. It’s the best med I’ve had to date other than the Ritalin. One of the biggest side effects I’ve had to date is increased blood pressure from the Effexor. At the dose you’re taking it shouldn’t be a problem, but if your doctor raises the dose, keep an eye on it. I had to lower my dose to keep the blood pressure at a safe level. http://www.onlinepsych.com/public/search/medsrcfr.htm http://www.healthtouch.com/level1/p_dri.htm These are the two sites I have for information about psych medications. That’s the dosage I started on although now I take Effexor XR 150 mg twice daily. It works for me. I have heard that going off of it HAS to be a gradual thing because the side effects are not too nice. Best, Luanne

Lesley, Didn’t your doctor make you cut down your dosage gradually? That’s what my sister did when she "graduated" to another drug. I have heard a lot of bad things about the side effects regarding "Effexor Withdrawal." Best, Luanne

I’m using the Atkins’ diet. I lost 20 lbs. the first month. It’s not something that I would do forever (even though that’s what he recommends) but it’s been more successful than anything else I’ve tried. Email if you want to talk about this more.
