Question:
Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how. Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico,
I doubt it’s an option to lower the costs to as low as they are in Mexico. If such a regulation were to be passed they’d just raise the price in Mexico to what’s being charged here and folks in Mexico would just have to do without. If you cut down the ability of a drug company to get return on investment too much you just won’t see any more investment and hence no more new drugs. Many drugs costs millions to develop and either never see the market or get pulled from the market within months due to newly discovered problems. If drug companies had it so easy everyone would own one. Don’t push too hard for the government to step in unless you want similar controls & interference with your industry too. — Don Elton Columbia, SC http://www.midcarolina.org

I assume all the "alternative" treatment proponents on USenet will be totally against this petition since they mostly claim that they would be happy to operate under the same regulations as pharmaceutical companies
Well, I’d be against it. Over the years I’ve found some companies that make a point of standardising their products. Last thing I want is another layer or six of bureaucrats leeching off of these companies and justifying their expensive lifestyles by promulgating more regulations that will end by jacking up the prices of these products. There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly. Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups. Much like it’s done here. I trust the posters here a lot farther than some bureaucrat whose boss accepts money from pharmaceutical companies. Over all I like the current set up. It’s inexpensive, and unconnected with the horrendously expensive medical-industrial combine–so far. Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation? I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic. I went to GNC to look at Chitosan for the heck of it and I believe the small bottle was $29.00 or $39.00. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive. In fact, I watched a documentary about death and dying. Several people had turned to alternative products and were spending several hundred dollars *per month* on herbs and vitamins. What a rip off… and by the way no one survived. Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive! Patrice

But to what standard? A year or so ago a local newspaper sent ’standardized’ herbal extracts to a lab for testing. They discovered that these ’standardized’ extracts contained anywhere from 20% to 140% of what the manufacturers claimed. There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly. Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups. Much like it’s done here. Then how can you trust companies that have worked very hard to get themselves excluded from just about all sort of laws protecting the medical consumer? A McDonalds hamburger is subject to stricter regulations relating to food safety, purity and content. And of course it is inexpensive, it is always cheaper to skip the safety testing. So what if you are using your customers as guinea pigs? I suggest that you use the same scepticism you apply towards real medicine when you look at the alternative crowd. Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation? I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.
I just spent a couple of years under Kaiser HMO. I was very satisfied with the care. I found them to be very aggressive about preventative medicine and ensuring my asthma was under excellent control. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." General Colin Powell

Dosen’t mean that it is safe either. Try to get somebody marketing ephedra products to give you an honest safety warning. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." General Colin Powell

So you have a co pay? What is the ‘real’ cost of your meds? Your employer and ultimately you and the people in your insurance pool bear the cost of those meds by your fees. How much more would be in your paycheck if it weren’t for the high fees charged by the medical industry and it’s bureaucratic overseers? Just because the cost is taken out of your wages before you see it so you "won’t feel it" doesn’t mean you’re not paying through the nose. Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how. Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico, our faithful legislators are fed re- election dollars by the pharm industries (can you smell the peanuts on their breath?) so they can make billions charging higher prices for those on medicare, etc. You and I pay for that, too. And that’s taken out of your wages, too, before you can see it. As a business owner, I can darn well see it. I don’t resent paying taxes and fica, but I sure do resent it when big business pays off legislators to pass laws so they can suck up tax dollars that I have to pay. Rant. Rave. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive.
Yeah. It can be. You have to do your research. Don’t know what chitosan is, but some companies do charge way more than their stuff is worth. And there are always vultures looking to make money off the dying. On that, I have to repeat, do your research. I have found certain companies that produce inxpensive but effective compounds that I have patronised over the years. I have befriended both a western traditional herb store owner where I live, and a Chinese herb shop owner in NYC. I have read dozens of books over the years, as well as many articles on the internet. Some people don’t or can’t spend the time and effort to do this, and they will remain the prey of the con man or the medical industry. The alternative is to take greater responsibility for our health, as we are all here doing. If you think alternative meds are expensive now, wait till the medical industry controls it. Obsess. Compulse. Good luck

Go to an optromitist (sp?) you are tested for glaucoma as part of a routine eye exam. ‘Reply to’ address changed to foil email spammers.

No real discernible symptoms, at least early on. Must be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. I doubt that inhaled steroids alone will lead to this type of problem. — Mark Feblowitz, GTE Laboratories Inc., 40 Sylvan Rd. Waltham, MA 02254

prenisone will raise your blood pressure too, so I’m not surprised that it raised the pressure in your eyes, and I would see if you could get on an inhaled steroid like Flovent.

I looked up prednisone in my US Pharmacopeia. Quoting "Glaucoma–Corticosteroids may cause the pressure within the eye to increase." My advice is to switch from the low doseage oral prednisone (5mg/day) and Vanceril corticosteroid inhaler, to the new high strength inhaled corticosteroid Flovent, which will result in a much lower (factor of 10 or more) systemic (side) effect. The high strength corticosteroid inhaler approved in the US which has the lowest systemic effect is reputed to be Flovent (comes in 3 strengths, 44, 110 & 220 ug, you would probably use the Flovent 220). The point is get off the oral steroid. The older highstrenth Aerobid or new double strength Vanceril 84 would be an improvement, but Flovent would be the best. Another inhaler to consider is Serevent, a long acting bronchodilator. The 1997 Expert Panel Report recommends use of Serevent as a steroid sparing drug (use of Serevent reduces need for corticosteroid inhalers). A good reference for the latest asthma treatments is ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’ by Francis Adams, MD c96. Good luck,

Can anyone tell me a little about what bolt-on’s might get me a little bit more power? I understand this question has been asked many times before, but I am new to the group and could not find any answers by reviewing the older messages. My immediate plans are to add a 2-3" body lift, and larger wheels/tires, so I I might need the added power to keep the status quo. Thanks in advance. Dave

I don’t think you can. We’re moving four days after our wedding to Boston (3,000 miles), and we’re just going to ship stuff we get. All of the furniture we have is very bad, so we’re either selling it or giving it to Goodwill (if they’ll take them
). We expect to get some cash gifts, though, but to offset shipping costs, we registered at Macy’s and Crate and Barrel, which are national, and just so happen to be wherever our guests are located (they are scattered all over the US). One option for them is to buy the gift, wait until we have found our new apartment, and send it to us there. It’s not *proper* to ask for cash instead of gifts. It looks as if you are greedy. Hopefully, your friends will make that logical decision to give you cash instead of gifts, but if they don’t, please don’t worry about it. You’ve got more things to worry about than how heavy your gifts will be. Laurel and Jack, 5/25/96

How to have generic Viagra tested ???
Question:
Check the local drug clinics. They may have an anonymous service for testing. Back in the 60’s, you could send in a tab of acid for analysis with a random ID# you chose. You’d call in about 4 days, give them the number and get the lab results. It was an attempt (a good one too) to keep bad LSD off the streets. The lab would also publish a description of pills analyzed and their contents so future buyers had an idea.

Is it possible to have a generic Viagra tested for purity and potency. How would one go about it, has anyone reading ever done this and if, what was the cost. I rather suspect the cost would far exceed the cost of buying the stuff from a known good source. Especially since all you have done is proven the sample is good. That says nothing about the pills you didn’t test or the ones in your next order…
Thank you for your reply’s to my question. I appreciate your attempt to allay my fear of taking an unknown substance purchased from an unregulated and unsupervised source. Nevertheless, as I have a very inquisitive mind, I would still be interested to hear from someone who knows the answer to my original question as the placebo effect is a well researched and documented phenomenon. Thanking you again, J.

cleaning forced-air heating ducts
Question:
Wish I had the material in front of me, but before moving we looked into an electrostatic filter for the air intake of our forced air system. It was a permanent unit that required no cleaning and runs on 120 house current. How it works is to attract and then zap dust being carried through the intake (essentially a miniature incineration of dust). Average cost was $600 Canadian depending on size. I never saw it work but the fuel oil company (who are very good) gave me contacts of the couple of people who have used them in the area, and they report 1) a big improvement and 2) they feel their total system now reduces the dust problem in the house where previously it made it worse. We were convinced (but then we bought a new house and didn’t need it). Hope this posting doesn’t prompt an onslaught of SPAM. Bill. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – For anyone who has asthma and a forced-air heating system, 1 month ago I had the entire system "power-vacuumed" for about 450 dollars (depends on number of ducts) and have had a very definite decrease in my symptoms, my need for albuteral/serevent and flovent (from 4-6 to 2 puffs per day). My previous heating filters would be pretty dirty (completely gray) after a month, the latest one is basically spotless after 4 weeks of use so I believe that the air in the house must be much cleaner. If you are in this situation you may want to give this a try. The cleaning company said it should be done every 4-7 years depending upon whether you have pets etc…It seems like a better guide is how long it takes the filter to get dirty.

Just wanted to add that if anyone uses a humidifer with their heating system, the possibility exists for water vapor to become trapped in the elbows of the pipes thus leading to the growth of mold when the system is not in use for a period of time or is shut off for the spring/summer. Jarrett I live in the country – lots of dirt, polle and grass clippings sucked into my outdoor air unit. I get my ducts cleaned every 5 years. It does make a tremendous difference!
Response:
Hit the send button too soon. My point is if you use a humidifier pipes should be cleaned out on a more regular basis, say at the start of each heating season. Also, de-lime the humidifier plates. We had our ducts cleaned before we turned the heat on in this house. We moved in it in August and the house is 11 years old. The former owners smoked and never had it done. All I can say is that my 2 kids who get sick all the time were much more manageable this winter season. I believe its a good investment. We also bought a 3M electro-magnetic furnace filter and I think that has helped tremondously. The dut is much less compared to when we had the regular furnace filter on. Gina

You can keep the system even cleaner by installing washable filters on your air return vents, and on your heater vents. I use cheesecloth, so that they can all be removed weekly and tossed in the washer. Chris Owens

Question:
The loss of bloating and heart burn after eliminating wheat is very common to low carbers. If you eat wheat it will come back with a vengeance. However, I found that after 1 1/2 yrs of low carbing when I reintroduced modest amounts of wheat back into my diet I no longer had major problems with it. The explanation may be that resting the system allows something to heal.
Response:
I used to have chronic bloating and stomach pain every evening after meals. Yet, when I tried LC, my bloating disappeared. I am thinking I might be allergic to wheat or something like that. Has anyone else experienced positive side effects (besides weight loss), as a result of eliminating or cutting back on carbs? Tina
I haven’t had gas problems since I started. I used to have them all the time. My mood cycles (I have been manic-depressive all my life) have pretty much cleared up. Any bad periods only last a couple of days, and they have been rare. I have much better muscle control ( I have benign essential tremor and sclerotic symptoms) in fact I’m starting art again, and can go back to playing instruments I haven’t been able to play in years. I think that bloating after eating wheat/grain products is a symptom of Celiac Disease, something that basically makes people who are allergic to the grain products and don’t know it very ill. Or you could just have a digestive system sensitive to grains. Amy

After lots of experimenting with dosage, this works fine for me. The only problem with side effects is that St Johns tends to irritate the stomach. Comments on the dosage? How do I eliminate the stomach irritation?

I would say that is a lot of St. John’s Wort, and is probably excessive. One side effect that you should look out for is sensitive hands and fingers. Cuts, and scratches can take for ever to heal. Why are you taking it? http://members.spree.com/angeleye St. John’s Wort (also known by its botanical name, Hypericum perforatum) is derived from a yellow flowering plant. It has been used as an herbal remedy for mild to moderate depression (not recommended for the treatment of severe or manic depression), anxiety, and sleep disturbances/disorders for many years, especially in Germany. Research suggests that St. John’s Wort raises levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine — neurotransmitters which help boost mental morale and mood. Unlike prescription anti-depressants (i.e., Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, etc.), which can cause negative side effects ranging from nausea to impaired sex drive and ejaculation, St. John’s Wort has no documented cases of sexual dysfunction. It also appears to increase sleep activity by acting as a mild sedative, and may reduce chronic tension headaches. Several adverse effects have been reported in association with usage of St. John’s Wort, including: gastrointestinal discomfort, such as upset stomach allergic reactions fatigue restlessness increased sensitivity to sunlight (so, use a sunscreen or sunblock while on St. John’s Wort) dry mouth confusion dizziness Components of St. John’s Wort may also cause an increase in blood pressure, which could result in a stroke. Since St. John’s Wort is a nutritional supplement, which is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is no guarantee of the quality of the supplement from product to product. Carefully read product labels — look for an extract standardized to 0.3 percent hypericin, the purported active ingredient in St. John’s Wort, and make sure this extract is derived from the whole St. John’s Wort plant (i.e., flowers, leaves, and stem). The dosage of St. John’s Wort that has been used in most studies is a 900 milligram daily dose taken in 300 mg increments three times a day. Results may not be seen for at least four to six weeks, if at all. Discontinue use after six weeks if you’ve noticed no results because it’s probably not effective for you.

Anyone tried fluvoxamine?
Question:
jBeth, are you talking about Luvox? shell
Response:
Brand name Faverin in the UK. Heard it’s good for OCD and depression.
Hi Beth, Fluvoxamine is similar to Prozac in many ways and is used for depression and OCD (an aside to Shell — yes, it’s Luvox in the USA). Response to antideps varies enormously from person to person, and what works for one may not work for another; unfortunately, psychiatric medicine is still rather hit and miss, and trial-and-error is usually the only way to find the right med for you. There are some major risks of interactions with this drug, including terfenadine and astemizole (antihistamines), cisapride ("propulsid", a motility stimulant), warfarin, theophylline, certain benzodiazepines and phenytoin. Or what about sertraline (Lustral/Zoloft)?
That has a slightly broader collection of possible side effects than some of the other SSRIs, though much less risk of drug interactions than fluvoxamine, and has been known to work in some people who have had only limited success with other antideps. Curiously, in the UK it’s not listed as a treatment for OCD, but only depression, while clinical trial data indicates that it *is* effective in OCD too. Some people who don’t get a good result from SSRIs have fared better with venlafaxine (Effexor) or with the SNRI reboxetine (Edronax), though again neither of these is listed as appropriate for treatment of OCD. Hope this info helps, and good luck! love from Julie.

Zoloft side effect?

I’m starting to get terrified about going to sleep. Now, I’ve had panic attacks in the past, but never two in a two days. All SSRI’s (and Zoloft belongs to this group as do Paxil and Prozac) will worsen your symptoms during the first 2-8 weeks. To assess if this is really the med for you or not the best thing to do is to wait a few weeks. I know what it’s like, believe me. But it does take a while for these meds to kick in. You might ask your doctor for a benzo on the soide as this softens the side effects of the first weeks. Xanax and Ativan come to mind, which are fast-working meds with a very short half-life. A combo of SSRI and benzo for maintenance is quite common these days as well. Don’t give up too quickly…(I know how hard this can be) Philip Peters

It is not uncommon to have exagerrated anxiety while adjusting to an SRI. I would recommend calling your doc and asking for something to help while you adjust. It takes weeks before one can assess if Zoloft is right or wrong for you. When I started Paxil I had attacks too. That ended after a few weeks. I couldn’t possibly have made a decision after 4 days. Many people here (including myself) have experienced that starting an SRI such as Zoloft will actually increase panic in the early going. For most, this side effect will wear off in a few weeks. There are a couple of ways to get around it. One way is to start on a very low dose of Zoloft, and gradually increase the dose until you reach a therapeutic level (possibly taking several months to do it). This low start and slow increase eliminates most of the side effects. Another way to reduce side effects is to take a benzo on a temporary basis, until you are established on the Zoloft. The benzo can help control the anxiety produced by the medication. Do talk to your doctor about this, as increased anxiety is a common early side effect of SRIs, and there are ways to get around the problem. I’m terribly sorry to read this but, if it’s any consolation, it isn’t at all uncommon – indeed, Zoloft did that to me, too. All the SSRIs seem capable of causing increased anxiety when first started and to counter this some doctors start patients at very low doses, slowly increasing them till the desired effect is achieved. Some also prescribe anxiolytics (typically benzodiazepines) to offset this side effect. If it’s very bad, I’d really recommend you talk to your doctor about it. Hope that’s some help – good luck! — Gary Cooper

the two most common benzodiazapines (that I come across in reading posts) used to bridge the adjustment period to a SSRI are Xanax or Klonopin I was given klonopin to get over the adjustment to paxil.

Medication or just the panic disorder rearing it’s ugly head? Hi, From what I hear (I can’t remember myself) Many times when you start on an antidepressant, your symtoms can become worse at first. It is always a good idea to give a new med a couple of weeks, for the medication to build up in your system and let the side effects die down. Unless of course the side effects are really bad, in that case I would immediately talk to your doctor. Hope that helps. Lee "Life is too important to be taken seriously"

Very common for SRI’s to increase anxiety (even to the point of panic) in the first few weeks. You might want to talk to your doc about adding or increasing a benzo til your body adjusts. I don’t take Zoloft – but had a heck of a time adjusting to Paxil. Gwen

BUSPAR-help anyone?
Question:
I was put on Buspar (worked up to 30mg/day) in March of this year. I never saw any significant change in my anxiety or PAs since so in Sept. I decided to ween myself off (my doctor said okay) of it. Has Buspar helped anyone in any way? The only thing I found that it helped was my migraine headaches. They seemed to decline amazingly while on it, but I really can’t be sure that it wasn’t related to something else. Thanks!
Response:
I recently started taking Buspar after a very bad experience with Prozac. I’ve tried other meds like Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, and even St. John’s Wort. Nothing worked to get rid of my headaches or took me out of a withdrawn state (if anyone reads this, have you ever felt like you were in a fog, couldn’t concentrate, and just lost the "zest", if so, tell me about it.) So far my 10mgs/day of Buspar seems to be helping but it really has only been less than a week…any advice?

weird side effects from Zoloft
Question:
Anyone have any strange side effects from Zoloft? I started to have TMJ pain/tension after taking it for under a week. Teeth hurt too. My doctor said this was not caused by the drug but when I stopped taking it, the symptoms disappeared (after about 3 months). Maybe it causes teeth clenching? I never felt any less depressed after taking it for 10 dayes. Actually felt like a zombie.
Hi Will, I never had TMJ while taking Zoloft, but I did have other ill effects. My mother recently did too. From our experiences, I’d say it’s a pretty good guess that what happened to you may well have been from the drug. While Zoloft seems to work well for some people, IMO the medical community has a ways to go toward identifying & understanding its range of adverse reactions. Hope these anecdotes help: I tried switching from Nardil to Zoloft a few years ago. Took it for about a month, I think… hard to remember as I was in a complete fog during the entire period. Anyway, it made me a zombie as well – I felt no trace of humanity in or around me while on it. It virtually left me unable to *feel* anything at all, or to *think*, for that matter. It was when I stopped taking it to go back on Nardil, and was waiting the required period for it to clear out of my system, that some really bizarre and frightening symptoms appeared. I had intense, violent hallucinations that scared the bejeezus out of me (the *only* hallucinations I’ve ever had, BTW … well, that is if you don’t count the effects of certain substances I ingested in younger days 8- ). I also was unbelievably anxious during this withdrawal period, which lasted about a week (I think) but felt like an eternity. My mother, who’s in her 70s, was prescribed Zoloft for depression a month ago by her cardiologist. She stopped taking it after three weeks because it induced the same zombie effect in her. She had no withdrawal symptoms at all. Apparently her depression was transient because it seems to have subsided as well. Yesterday she felt like getting off the couch and going *out* for the first time since the depression hit. I took her shopping and she did just fine. Glad your TMJ and teeth pain stopped. And I hope you’ve found another med that works better for you. Take care.

S’not weird, if Zoloft is anything like paxil. And they are both SSRIs. I have TMJ (from teeth clenching) and it got, oh, (this is a rough estimate) about a BAZILLION times worse when I started the paxil. My dear (well, sometimes dear) pdoc said it was a not common but not rare side effect. So it sounds like yer pdoc is a quack, OR Zoloft and paxil are different. But I do think they are pretty similar. Ten days really isn’t enough time to see if an AD is going to help, though if your jaw pain was unbearable… And when paxil worked for me, I felt like a zombie until I was put on a theraputic (heigh enough) dose. So if you feel like another go at it would help, there are plenty of ADs to try. I hope you can find one that works, if it’s what you need. Usually it takes much longer than 10 days for it to have an effect. I wonder if the teeth-clenching had to do with some sort of sleep disruption from the drug — particularly if you were feeling like a zombie. Mike. — For more information about this service, send e-mail to:
