Question:
Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how. Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico,
I doubt it’s an option to lower the costs to as low as they are in Mexico. If such a regulation were to be passed they’d just raise the price in Mexico to what’s being charged here and folks in Mexico would just have to do without. If you cut down the ability of a drug company to get return on investment too much you just won’t see any more investment and hence no more new drugs. Many drugs costs millions to develop and either never see the market or get pulled from the market within months due to newly discovered problems. If drug companies had it so easy everyone would own one. Don’t push too hard for the government to step in unless you want similar controls & interference with your industry too. — Don Elton Columbia, SC http://www.midcarolina.org

I assume all the "alternative" treatment proponents on USenet will be totally against this petition since they mostly claim that they would be happy to operate under the same regulations as pharmaceutical companies
Well, I’d be against it. Over the years I’ve found some companies that make a point of standardising their products. Last thing I want is another layer or six of bureaucrats leeching off of these companies and justifying their expensive lifestyles by promulgating more regulations that will end by jacking up the prices of these products. There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly. Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups. Much like it’s done here. I trust the posters here a lot farther than some bureaucrat whose boss accepts money from pharmaceutical companies. Over all I like the current set up. It’s inexpensive, and unconnected with the horrendously expensive medical-industrial combine–so far. Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation? I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.

I have a co-pay for my meds…$15.00 for brand and $10.00 for generic. I went to GNC to look at Chitosan for the heck of it and I believe the small bottle was $29.00 or $39.00. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive. In fact, I watched a documentary about death and dying. Several people had turned to alternative products and were spending several hundred dollars *per month* on herbs and vitamins. What a rip off… and by the way no one survived. Just because it’s touted as "safe and natural" sure doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive! Patrice

But to what standard? A year or so ago a local newspaper sent ’standardized’ herbal extracts to a lab for testing. They discovered that these ’standardized’ extracts contained anywhere from 20% to 140% of what the manufacturers claimed. There are also a few independant companies that review alternative products and report on their findings publicly. Of course, there are also those that are set up by fraudulent companies, but these are also reviewed by the public, and vituperated in the various newsgroups. Much like it’s done here. Then how can you trust companies that have worked very hard to get themselves excluded from just about all sort of laws protecting the medical consumer? A McDonalds hamburger is subject to stricter regulations relating to food safety, purity and content. And of course it is inexpensive, it is always cheaper to skip the safety testing. So what if you are using your customers as guinea pigs? I suggest that you use the same scepticism you apply towards real medicine when you look at the alternative crowd. Is anybody really happy with the HMO situation? I’m sure that the business people in the pharm industry are drooling over the thought of similarly dividing up the alternative health industry.
I just spent a couple of years under Kaiser HMO. I was very satisfied with the care. I found them to be very aggressive about preventative medicine and ensuring my asthma was under excellent control. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." General Colin Powell

Dosen’t mean that it is safe either. Try to get somebody marketing ephedra products to give you an honest safety warning. "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." General Colin Powell

So you have a co pay? What is the ‘real’ cost of your meds? Your employer and ultimately you and the people in your insurance pool bear the cost of those meds by your fees. How much more would be in your paycheck if it weren’t for the high fees charged by the medical industry and it’s bureaucratic overseers? Just because the cost is taken out of your wages before you see it so you "won’t feel it" doesn’t mean you’re not paying through the nose. Same thing for those getting meds from the Gummint, regardless of how. Instead of insisting that the prices be kept low as in Mexico, our faithful legislators are fed re- election dollars by the pharm industries (can you smell the peanuts on their breath?) so they can make billions charging higher prices for those on medicare, etc. You and I pay for that, too. And that’s taken out of your wages, too, before you can see it. As a business owner, I can darn well see it. I don’t resent paying taxes and fica, but I sure do resent it when big business pays off legislators to pass laws so they can suck up tax dollars that I have to pay. Rant. Rave. I don’t see what is so cheap about that…alternative stuff is plenty expensive.
Yeah. It can be. You have to do your research. Don’t know what chitosan is, but some companies do charge way more than their stuff is worth. And there are always vultures looking to make money off the dying. On that, I have to repeat, do your research. I have found certain companies that produce inxpensive but effective compounds that I have patronised over the years. I have befriended both a western traditional herb store owner where I live, and a Chinese herb shop owner in NYC. I have read dozens of books over the years, as well as many articles on the internet. Some people don’t or can’t spend the time and effort to do this, and they will remain the prey of the con man or the medical industry. The alternative is to take greater responsibility for our health, as we are all here doing. If you think alternative meds are expensive now, wait till the medical industry controls it. Obsess. Compulse. Good luck

Go to an optromitist (sp?) you are tested for glaucoma as part of a routine eye exam. ‘Reply to’ address changed to foil email spammers.

No real discernible symptoms, at least early on. Must be diagnosed during a routine eye exam. I doubt that inhaled steroids alone will lead to this type of problem. — Mark Feblowitz, GTE Laboratories Inc., 40 Sylvan Rd. Waltham, MA 02254

prenisone will raise your blood pressure too, so I’m not surprised that it raised the pressure in your eyes, and I would see if you could get on an inhaled steroid like Flovent.

I looked up prednisone in my US Pharmacopeia. Quoting "Glaucoma–Corticosteroids may cause the pressure within the eye to increase." My advice is to switch from the low doseage oral prednisone (5mg/day) and Vanceril corticosteroid inhaler, to the new high strength inhaled corticosteroid Flovent, which will result in a much lower (factor of 10 or more) systemic (side) effect. The high strength corticosteroid inhaler approved in the US which has the lowest systemic effect is reputed to be Flovent (comes in 3 strengths, 44, 110 & 220 ug, you would probably use the Flovent 220). The point is get off the oral steroid. The older highstrenth Aerobid or new double strength Vanceril 84 would be an improvement, but Flovent would be the best. Another inhaler to consider is Serevent, a long acting bronchodilator. The 1997 Expert Panel Report recommends use of Serevent as a steroid sparing drug (use of Serevent reduces need for corticosteroid inhalers). A good reference for the latest asthma treatments is ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’ by Francis Adams, MD c96. Good luck,

Can anyone tell me a little about what bolt-on’s might get me a little bit more power? I understand this question has been asked many times before, but I am new to the group and could not find any answers by reviewing the older messages. My immediate plans are to add a 2-3" body lift, and larger wheels/tires, so I I might need the added power to keep the status quo. Thanks in advance. Dave

I don’t think you can. We’re moving four days after our wedding to Boston (3,000 miles), and we’re just going to ship stuff we get. All of the furniture we have is very bad, so we’re either selling it or giving it to Goodwill (if they’ll take them
). We expect to get some cash gifts, though, but to offset shipping costs, we registered at Macy’s and Crate and Barrel, which are national, and just so happen to be wherever our guests are located (they are scattered all over the US). One option for them is to buy the gift, wait until we have found our new apartment, and send it to us there. It’s not *proper* to ask for cash instead of gifts. It looks as if you are greedy. Hopefully, your friends will make that logical decision to give you cash instead of gifts, but if they don’t, please don’t worry about it. You’ve got more things to worry about than how heavy your gifts will be. Laurel and Jack, 5/25/96

says… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – A patent does not last 20 or 30 years. It is something like 7 or 11 years, (I don’t remember exactly). 20 years from the date it was filed with the patent office. There are a few ways to extend them to a certain extent, if the patent office was really slow, or it took forever to get FDA approval. I thought so. Now, what if they "enhance" the design of the originally patented technology. Does the 20-year clock start over? I’m asking because it sounds like that’s what ALZA did for Concerta. They took their original design and added a coating of med on the outside so that it would release an initial dose of medication.
In that case I suspect that the patent is on the coating technology. — — –John Reply to jclarke at eye bee em dot net

The Concerta web page says that if you take 15 mg Methylphenidate 2x/day or 15 mg Methylphenidate 3x/day or 60 mg Methylphenidate-SR, then you should take 54 mg of Concerta every morning by taking a 36 mg and an 18 mg at the same time. Daily dosage above 54 mg is not recommended. The URL is http://www.concerta.net/info.html Katswan
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, I am going to my Doctor tomorrow, and he has expressed interest in trying Concerta. I have a question on this, however. I am an adult, 31 years old. I have been on 20mg (non-SR) Ritalin 3 times a day (60 mg total per day) for the past 5 years. Considering this, what dosage of Concerta should I be on? The 60 mg per day worked fine for me, but I dont see how that dose (per day) can be obtained from the size tablets being offered right now for Concerta (only 18mg or 36mg). I am at a total loss as to why there is no good indicators of what an adult should be taking for Concerta, if (s)he is coming from a regular release Ritalin dosage of 60mg per day? Taking 2 x 36mg. Concerta might be considered to be too high of a dose. There is a new 54mg coming out (I am wondering if it is out yet… possibly). But would this be enough for me? Also, I can find no literature that talks about how much (in mg) is released on the outside-coating ‘immediate release’ of Concerta tabs, and then, how much is released in each remaining layer (2 more layers), and at what time are they released? I went to Concerta.net, but cannot find any data that answers these questions. Can anyone provide some answers to these questions? Thanks. Chris

I just had a thought, they have generic Ritalin SR, do they have it yet for Concerta? <Christopher wrote No, it is brand new, less than one year old. (Curious again) How long does it take for a generic to be approved and shipping? I think only generics are approved for the type of insurance my daughter has, unless there is a good reason she has to take a brand name medication.
When a new med is developed, that company that developed it has exclusive rights to market it, as with any patented invention. After, I think, 20 or 30 years or so, they lose the exclusivity and other products can copy their design/formula. They can also "lease" the right to use the patented formula/design during their exclusive rights period. ALZA’s web site says that their OROS delivery system has been used for 20 years, but that Concerta uses an enhanced OROS system, so the clock may have restarted ticking, it may be like a new patent. Most health/medical insurance policies push generics (list of covered meds). When my daughter was on Ritalin, I had to make certain the doctor put "Brand name medically necessary" on every prescription, or our previous insurance company would only pay for the generic, since it was available. To get our new insurance company to pay for Concerta, we had to jump through some hoops. The doctor had to write a letter (for which I had to provide him information since we’re new to the practice), detailing all the meds daughter has been on, why they weren’t effective or were problematic, and why we think Concerta will be different. Since daughter’s tried everything, they approved our request and are paying for Concerta. They did not approve it for son, however, as he hasn’t tried Ritalin-SR (much cheaper than Concerta and theoretically similar). I won’t put him on Ritalin-SR, however, because I think the dose is too high for him. When he was on Ritalin, he took 5mg 3x/day. He currently takes 5mg Adderall 2x/day. No way do these dosages compare to 20 mg R-SR, which would be expected to dump 20mg of meds into his system in 4 hours less than he got 15mg of meds (and twice as much meds as he’s taking now). He doesn’t need more med, he needs it spread over a longer day. So I paid for his first month’s Rx for Concerta (nearly $70). Now that we know it’s working well for him, the doctor will write another letter requesting approval. Katswan

A patent does not last 20 or 30 years. It is something like 7 or 11 years, (I don’t remember exactly). Copyrights last longer than patents and can be renewed. Copyrights don’t cover the same thing; they protect expressions of ideas, like books or pictures. Patents give companies (or people) the exclusive right to construct or sell or use a process or principle of operation. However, to get copyright protection for a period, you must disclose exactly how to do it, and anyone can get copies from the patent office after it has expired. Alternatively, companies can just keep things secret. These are trade secrets, but if someone else comes up with the same idea, the company has nothing they can legally do about it. -Chris Eliot

Well, sorta. The "game", I am told by folks who have cause to know such things, is to tell enough to get the patent but not enough that someone can reproduce the technology. Georgia Tech has a course in which you are given a patent and required to design a working device based on that patent. It very quickly becomes evident how much information is _not_ included in the patent. Of course this assumes that the device described by the patent will actually work. One engineer I knew collected whacky patents for stuff that couldn’t possibly work–had his office wallpapered with them. Alternatively, companies can just keep things secret. Now we her taking 30 long however I wonder if she can take another 20 mg dose around 2PM? Is there an Adderall website?? Is anyone taking Adderall this way, three doses a day? Last time we talked to her doctor we found that she was splitting her afternoon dose by taking 10 mg at lunch plus 10 mg later in the afternoon which the the lower split dose. This was one of the reasons he suggested trying Concerta

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Anyone know of a free online PDR reference for Concerta and Adderall? We are at 56 mg/day on a 14yr old and wonder if we have the option of increasing or possibly we may end up going back to the Adderall and try to figure out a better way of managing its level As a medic, I would recommend talking to her Dr first. PDR’s should be available at most libraries. While my USP DI is a bit old (1996, they ain’t cheap), the usual pediatric dose for 6 years of age and older for Adderall, states that the dose does not usually exceed 40 mg daily. Concerta is not listed, as it is newer than my book. I saw a company chart comparing 18 mg concerta with 5 mg Ritalin taken three times a day. My guess is that there is some loss due to the special delivery capsule, and that otherwise you can do very rough dosing estimates by comparing 18 mg concerta to 15 mg Ritalin spread out over a day. This is only my guess, though; no one who understands about it has told me anything like this.

Concerta does not appear in our Libraries 2000 PDR and of course although I have to talk to her psychiatrist before we increase (ie to get a script) I was wondering if increasing the dose was an option. I don’t think she gets the kick (maybe poor choice of words) that she got from the Adderall. The Concerta is probably much slower and more gradual delivery and change in the blood level.

That’s how we’ve switched dosages here. Son went from 5mg Ritalin 3x/day to 5mg Adderall 2x/day (but really needing a 3rd dose too late to give it to him) to 18mg Concerta 1x/day. Daughter went from 20mg Ritalin-SR in the AM plus 10mg Ritalin regular in the PM (and still never being stable in the meds’ effects) to 10mg Adderall 2x/day (but really needing a third dose too late to give it to her) to 36mg Concerta 1x/day. That’s how our pediatrician explained it to us.
I just had a thought, they have generic Ritalin SR, do they have it yet for Concerta?
Well, the med in Concerta is methylphenidate HCl (a form of Ritalin), so it’s already a generic. The delivery system in the body is what is unique and what makes it so expensive. It’s called OROS and was developed by ALZA. It’s been used to deliver other medications for about 20 years, although it’s been enhanced for Concerta to give an intial "shot" of medication. I’m sure ALZA with hold on to the rights/patents for as long as they can. Here’s ALZA’s Concerta web site URL: http://www.concerta.net/index.htm Katswan

From what our pediatrician told us about the conversion from Ritalin to Concerta, you would need 2 36mg caplets in the morning to receive the equivalent of your current 60mg/day of Ritalin. (18mg Concerta = 15mg {3 5mg doses} Ritalin) I am at a total loss as to why there is no good indicators of what an adult should be taking for Concerta, if (s)he is coming from a regular release Ritalin dosage of 60mg per day? With the conversion above, I don’t see how 2 36mg would be considered too high. It’s an equivalent dosage to what you are currently taking. I’ve a pdf on Concerta. I just had a thought, they have generic Ritalin SR, do they have it yet for Concerta?

(Curious again) How long does it take for a generic to be approved and shipping? I think only generics are approved for the type of insurance my daughter has, unless there is a good reason she has to take a brand name medication. Norma <Sigline space for rent

I am going to my Doctor tomorrow, and he has expressed interest in trying Concerta. I have a question on this, however. I am an adult, 31 years old. I have been on 20mg (non-CR) Ritalin 3 times a day (60 mg total per day) for the past 5 years. What dosage of Concerta should I be on? The 60 mg per day worked fine for me, but I dont see how that dose (per day) can be obtained from the size tablets being offered right now for Concerta (18 or 36mg). I am at a total loss as to why there is no good indicators of what an adult should be taking for Concerta, if (s)he is coming from a regular release Ritalin dosage of 60mg per day? Taking 2 36mg. Concerta might be considered to be too high of a dose. There is a new 54mg coming out (maybe out now, possibly). But would this be enough? Also, I can find no literature that talks about how much (in mg) is released on the outside coating immediate release of Concerta tabs, and then, how much is released in each remaining layer (2 more layers), and at what time are they released? - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just had a thought, they have generic Ritalin SR, do they have it yet for Concerta? Well, the med in Concerta is methylphenidate HCl (a form of Ritalin), so it’s already a generic. The delivery system in the body is what is unique and what makes it so expensive. It’s called OROS and was developed by ALZA. It’s been used to deliver other medications for about 20 years, although it’s been enhanced for Concerta to give an intial "shot" of medication. I’m sure ALZA with hold on to the rights/patents for as long as they can. Here’s ALZA’s Concerta web site URL: http://www.concerta.net/index.htm Katswan

As a medic, I would recommend talking to her Dr first. The dosage info for Adderal is backed by the PDR info at: http://www.healthsquare.com/drugmain.htm You should also be able to find the info on Concerta there. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The dosage info for Adderal is backed by the PDR info at: http://www.healthsquare.com/drugmain.htm You should also be able to find the info on Concerta there. Question:
Long story made short… I’m 37 yrs old and was diagnosed w/ asthma 3 yrs ago. After doing much research I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve had asthma since childhood but was never diagnosed. Since childhood I’ve always had some skin irritation (P) in very small patches on my shins and scalp which was easily cleared w/ topicals. Since starting on Serevent and Flovent, however, I cannot clear the P and it has actually spread to my forearms, neck, elbows, and calves. I’ve eliminated just about any other factor. Has anybody had a similar experience. Am I crazy in relating the two? My derm thinks so. -B
Response:
I also have a similar background as you. I am 35 years old. I have had asthma since 2. I have had small p patches on my scalp and around my mouth since 15. I have stopped using topicals for my p. Although the spots do go away short term after the treatment, the p would always come back a bit worse after I stop the application. So I have decided the short term clearing is just not worth the potential long term risks for me. As for my asthma, it has gotten much better since my teenager years. It’s now less than 1 attack per year with no maintenance medication. Don’t know if it’s puberty or the fact that I took up karate around the same time. When I do have an asthma attack, from say exposure to doggy dander, I usually just control it with an otc spray. I haven’t thought about any connection between my asthma and p. I will pay more attention to see if my p gets worse after an asthma attack/otc spray. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Long story made short… I’m 37 yrs old and was diagnosed w/ asthma 3 yrs ago. Serevent/Flovent side effects?
Question:
The answer is a maybe. It depends in part on whatever other medications she is taking, such as aspirin, or anything else. Look up the Physicians Desk Reference, latest or recent editions. If your local public library doesn’t have it, visit a medical library (hospital or medical school). You can also search on the internet. If your daughter is drinking herb teas, ginseng and ginko biloba contain a blood thinner (coumodin aka warfarin). I developed this problem a few weeks back. this was due to the heart medicines I am taking. Using a water pick twice a day cleared up the problem for me.. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -My daughter has exercise induced asthma (she is on her high school track team) and has started Serevent (once daily) and Flovent (110, once/day) about 4 weeks ago. Could either of these cause bleeding of the gums? The package insert of Serevent has "dental pain" and the Flovent has "dental problem". Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Pam

This is an interesting tidbit. I have low blood pressure, low body temperature, and also sometimes have a problem with depression (around periods). I noticed that I’m feeling much more alert since I’ve been on Advair — like it also changed something that was causing me to get fatigued easily (like not breathing). Now I’m wondering if it’s just a drug effect on my nervous system rather than the breathing relief. Anyone else with some information on this? How can I tell, I wonder? I’ve been drinking water after using Advair, but now I’m wondering if I really should be brushing my teeth immediately after each use. –Jane

Response:
If she’s new to using an inhaler she could be getting medicine where it’s not intended to go in any significant quantity. Getting most of the medicine into one’s lungs just takes practice. The drill is to exhale completely, taking as long as necessary to force out all the air in the lungs. Then start to inhaler and, just after you’ve started sucking in air, push the plunger on the inhaler while still inhaling hard. I find I often cough after I do this with no medication at all – it’s just the deep breathing that makes me cough – so I do one or two practice runs until I stop coughing before I take a "live" run with inhaler. -S- – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My daughter has exercise induced asthma (she is on her high school track team) and has started Serevent (once daily) and Flovent (110, once/day) about 4 weeks ago. Doubtful; however side effects from MDI inhalers can be greatly reduced by using a spacer, the Aerochamber is popular; and rinsing mouth with water after inhaling. Are you sure the bleeding is from the gums, and not further down? For example, sometimes heavy coughing can irritate the throat and cause some bleeding with traces of blood in the sputum. [tell your doctor] Maybe the dentist should take a look at the gums; my dentist recommended vit C supplements along with proper brushing. Ellis

This is asking for trouble, starting at such a high dose will heigthen your anxiety and add other side effects that are temporary in the vast majority of cases and this might scare you off a potentially helpful med. Your pdoc should know better. The recommended starting dose of Zoloft for anxiety sufferers is 12.5 mg. Stay there for a week or so and then raise the dose in weekly increments of 12.5 mg (or at whatever pace is comfortable for you) until you have reached a therapeutic dose. Having a benzo like Xanax or Ativan to take *as needed* on the side at least during the weaning period will help too. *Start low, go slow* and you will have far fewer initial side effect problems. You should give Zoloift up to eight weeks to kick in – although most people get to feel better much earlier. Philip

Hi there, I used to think the exact same thing. But, not anymore. I can’t do this with the aid and assistance of meds. I am beginning to believe that it is all in my head. I will still be able to "feel" things, but it won’t be as strong. I think I am finally coming into my own person. Hi…I don’t know what your docs are thinking, but Prozac can cause weight loss. If prescribed for a person with ed, it’s usually bulimia since this med can help the b/p urges. I also asked my dr about Zyban and she wouldn’t give it to me b/c apparently it can cause seizures in people with eds. I think you should ask your docs about switching you to Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor or something else that doesn’t have a high incidence of weight loss as a side effect, but probably not Wellbutrin…the seizure side effect was scary enough to me to forget that idea. Good luck. H.

I did a little research online and something ‘clicked’… the dr.’s keep telling me to take my pills, but then tell me they don’t know much about anorexia and what to do about it and stuff.. They don’t seem to see a connection… for anorexia i read that you need to let the person know they are loved
and wanted and have worth.. I keep telling myself that, and i do believe it.. But i think it’s something medical as well… Well.. what ‘clicked’ was when i was reading about Wellbutrin messing
with your ‘pleasure centers’ and replacing other cravings and pleasures in the brain with the drug.. The dopamine thing… Well, ‘hunger’ (for food) is a mild form of ‘craving’…… I no longer
have cravings for foods or even hunger for them, although my body feels/displays the effects of no nutrition. And the ‘pleasure’ i used to get from foods/tastes/etc. is gone a lot of the time…. Just like the smokers who quit with Zyban, the pleasure of smoking went
away and they were able to quit.. Please, does this make any sense at all? I am desperate for an answer
before it’s too late… I started losing the most weight when i started prozac 2 years ago, and the psychs told me it was not the meds doing it. But before that i was never anorexic and i was over 20 pounds heavier than now. i need help to make sense of it, the doc’s won’t listen when i say i need
off meds.. i can’t do it myself, i feel suicidal when i cut the meds. that scares me becuz that’s not what i want, that’s the meds talking… i don’t want that at all; i never acted on feelings like that before meds…….but i feel so alone at times… ignoring the ED doesn’t make it go away…. Does it make sense, my theory about the Wellbutrin and cravings? I mean,
don’t smokers flll the smoking void with food?.. now they can fill it with Wellbutrin… I have read repeatedly that Wellbutrin is not supposed to be given to anyone with anorexia. And i never in my life felt TRUE ‘anxiety’ before i was on meds… But my doc’s say that’s not so… Who do i believe??? The stuff i read online is real medical info, not just someone’s personal
opinions.. Are the drug companies paying off the medical ppl, at the expense of the patients??? At $100 a bottle of Wellbutrin, i wouldn’t doubt it… I feel it’s my obligation to find an answer, and then i can help the other
people.

Question:
Hi, I started taking zoloft 2 months ago (25 mg). I couldnt handle the side effects when i tried to do 50 (sleepiness, weight gain, diarrhea), so i went to my pd friday. He put me on 100 mg of Wellbutrin every morning along with the 25 mg of zoloft in the evening. I’m worried about mixing 2 antidepressants. Are any of you doing this now?
Response:
Hi- Combining two- or sometimes even three- anti-depressants (or sometimes other drugs) is pretty standard psychopharmacology these days. Sometimes, high enough doses of one drug can’t be tolerated or are unsafe, or sometimes the one medication might just not be effective enough for your needs. Combining two can target more specific needs or one might be used to improve the effect of the other. Hope it helps- Susan

In principle this can be done. Your doctor probably prescribed the Wellbutrin because it’s sort of *stimulating* and can undo the sleepiness caused by Zoloft. Still, there are better solutions possible IMO which include adding a benzo like Xanax instead of Wellbutrin of which the anti-anxiety effect is highly debatable. OTOH, Xanax can make you drowsly, especially in the beginning, which is not quite what you seem to need right now. So another proposition could be another SSRI like Zoloft but then a more stimulating one which might be Prozac or else switching to a TCA. Still you might want to give the combo Zoloft/Wellbutrin a chance. Stranger combos have worked for people. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Hi Anxiousgirl, Mixing two or more antidepressants is becoming a routine treatment method. While I’m not totally convinced that its necessary in most cases, it won’t do any harm (there are some ADs, however, which should not be mixed). The proponents of ‘cocktail’ prescribing claim that the wider affect of more than one anti-anxiety med increases the probability of successful treatment. It’s true that each antidepressant tends to affect a slightly different groups of neurotransmitter receptors and it may be that this broader combined mode of action will have a greater affect. However, the same results can often be achieved using just one AD. The difficult being that you need to find the ‘right’ one. The one advantage of the Zoloft/Wellbutin combo is that Wellbutin tends to moderate the sexual dysfunction affect of some ADs, incl Zoloft. If this combination of meds is doing the job, then stick with it, if not see your doc about changing to something else. Ian Phobias: Catapedaphobia- Fear of jumping from high and low places.

i was on Zoloft for about a year and1/2.Just like you i had all the same symptom,s as you.then when going of the Zoloft i was sent to a neurologist because the back of my head kept going numb. Then i was off of everything for about 2yrs.Istarted all the dizziness and mass confusion at the time that we had moved ,i then changed to a new dr.He read my chart and he desided to put me on what they call SERZONE,,,,,,,, man I LOVED IT, no side afffects.i took the serzone for a little over a year and then went off of it .I can honestly say i feel great ,i actually wake up in the same mood i went to bed in .for the first time in my LIFE my day;s seem to be as normal as the next guy;s. SERZONE is a chemical- it replaces the saratonin and prolactin in the brain which are the hormones the the brain and body produce. For me my imbalance was caused by childhood trauma….. i hope you get the help you need see ya later. kugoe

Puppy Anxiety…Please advise
Question:
We solved most of our puppy’s whining and barking problems when she was tiny, by building a small pen – small enough to be moved around the house, but big enough to provide her with a bed, a bowl of water and a litter tray. That way, she could see us, feel included – she got lots of time out of the pen too being cuddled and things. At night, the pen was at the side of the bed, and she settled down really quickly. After a few weeks, and a few accidents, we got her housetrained, threw out the pen and she slept between our feet until she got too big then she moved onto the floor without much trouble. HTH.
Jon, Thanks for the advice. I am so looking forward to when she is housebroken. However, I must say, things have already been settling down here alot. Take care, Brad

Maybe an alternative is Paxil.. I was on Zoloft and felt the panic syptom , they raised the dose and I had more trouble. Paxil seems more along the lines for treatment of panic/depression. Meanwhile, enjoy watching your son and dog grow together. good luck, MM<<<< Paul, Thanks for your reply. If I can’t get Zoloft to work any better, I will try Paxil, it is the next step I guess. Brad

Hey, I got a puppy too! And the anxiety that goes with it. AGH. And the pee and dog puke, and whining, yapping, ripped up papers….double-AGH.
I was feeling like the only person on the planet that felt like he was going to have a nervous breakdown because I got a cute little puppy. First thing I’d say is that sometimes a side effect of Zoloft is anxiousness. Many people shoot a benzo (Xanax, Klonopin, ATivan) at it until it
subsides. I’m currently afraid of the Ativan my doc gave me, but I may try it again. Your point is a good one though and I believe you are right. You may be just reacting to a normal side effect and sticking it on the fact that you have a puppy.
–Snipped to save space– Try not to fret, sometimes animals pick up on it and will whine and cry worse. If you give in, the puppy has learned if he cries long enough you will come get him. Make it stick. Being miserable a couple days now is better than having a pest for a dog for the rest of it’s life.
Thanks for all that advice, I’m not the best dog trainer. You probably know all this stuff already.
No, some, but not all. And I used to breed Yorkies when my 3 kids were babies…..I let them set their own boundaries. Kids got bit, dogs had hair pulled, there were fights over chewies….
Once again, I thought I was the ONLY person who would EVER dare get a new puppy with a young child at the same time. but unless you got a dog with a weird history or bad lineage they will grow up together like siblings and play and love each other even though there will be an occassional fight.
Well, my family got me an Italian Greyhound from a liniage of champion show dogs – which I have been told are very mild mannered easy to train dogs. But besides the occasional rough-housing, my son loves the dog. As a temporary hedge against anxiety, you might ask your doc if you can get a couple of benzos to smooth over the rough places…..it will even itself out. Hope this helps
This post has helped me more than you will ever know. I thank you very much because I read it over and over and was able to calm down immensely…At first I wanted us to simply give the dog back to the breeders, but now I’m really adjusting and having fun. Thank you so much, Brad – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -KC Cindy

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well, the other day, my family surprised me with a new puppy that I said I wanted a few months ago. When I first saw her I thought like most people — "Wow she is so cute and adorable, I love her!" and told everyone how pleased I was. Well, that night(as per the breeders instructions), she slept in bed with me and my wife and needless to say, we all slept in the wet spot. She whined and kept us awake most of the night. The next night we put her in her kennel and she barked and woke us up and my 15 month old son. By Saterday night, I was feeling depressed and panicky, kind of like "what have we done? A puppy is a huge responsibility and we have a 15 month old son for Heaven’s sake"
Hi B, Didn’t go the puppy route but did just adopt a 2nd dog about 6 months ago and went thru MONTHS of anxiety and saying what have I done??? No matter pup or 2 year old – bringing anything new into the family is always (in my opinion) going to cause stress. With a 15 month old, I am sure you can relate to the massive changes. Give it time and try and enjoy the pup while it is still a pup, they grow up faster than kids, ya know! :) It took me til about a month ago to finally feel good about our new addition and for me to stop being on edge all the time. Think the pooch is glad too as I was on her about everything, expecting her to *know* all the rules like the older dog. I had to stop and make time to spend with her everyday. Been a long time since I did the pup thing, but you have the chance to train her and I think your son will like the companion. Good luck! Gwen

Hi all, I’ve been posting/lurking here for a couple of months now and had a pretty weird experience the other day that has me anxious as hell and depressed. Well, I had started taking my Zoloft 8 weeks ago again after being off of it for 3 months. I’m at 50 mg. I was up to 100 mg. five months ago, but this time, the side effects have been pretty bad so I’ve been fighting to stabilize at 50. Anyway, I was finally feeling GREAT a week ago. I was able to stop taking my sleep aids and I was making it through a good part of the day without even checking my state of mind for "crazy feelings" Well, the other day, my family surprised me with a new puppy that I said I wanted a few months ago. When I first saw her I thought like most people — "Wow she is so cute and adorable, I love her!" and told everyone how pleased I was. A puppy is a huge responsibility and we have a 15 month old son for Heaven’s sake" Saturday, I upped my dosage 25 mg. and noticed a little MORE anxiety setting in. Sunday and Monday I did the same and by late Monday morning I felt about as bad as I did 6 weeks ago. I worry about the puppy hurting my son, about my son hurting the puppy, about her messing on the floor…And since this whole episode happened, I now worry about if the Zoloft is going to help me when I am at full dosage. I know I am handling my anxiety better now than I was 6 weeks ago at the height of my Panic attacks/depression. And I know I’m at only half the dosage…It’s just gonna take me awhile before I am able to deal with the side effects and up my dosage to the 100mg. I guess I’d like to here of others who have had similar situations. It’s like, if I can’t enjoy the simple pleasures of life like a new puppy, what the hell can I enjoy? Thanks, B.
