P/Asthma/Inhalers
Question:
Long story made short… I’m 37 yrs old and was diagnosed w/ asthma 3 yrs ago. After doing much research I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve had asthma since childhood but was never diagnosed. Since childhood I’ve always had some skin irritation (P) in very small patches on my shins and scalp which was easily cleared w/ topicals. Since starting on Serevent and Flovent, however, I cannot clear the P and it has actually spread to my forearms, neck, elbows, and calves. I’ve eliminated just about any other factor. Has anybody had a similar experience. Am I crazy in relating the two? My derm thinks so. -B
Response:
I also have a similar background as you. I am 35 years old. I have had asthma since 2. I have had small p patches on my scalp and around my mouth since 15. I have stopped using topicals for my p. Although the spots do go away short term after the treatment, the p would always come back a bit worse after I stop the application. So I have decided the short term clearing is just not worth the potential long term risks for me. As for my asthma, it has gotten much better since my teenager years. It’s now less than 1 attack per year with no maintenance medication. Don’t know if it’s puberty or the fact that I took up karate around the same time. When I do have an asthma attack, from say exposure to doggy dander, I usually just control it with an otc spray. I haven’t thought about any connection between my asthma and p. I will pay more attention to see if my p gets worse after an asthma attack/otc spray. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Long story made short… I’m 37 yrs old and was diagnosed w/ asthma 3 yrs ago. singulair vs. inhaled steroids
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m new to this ng and am learning lots of new info about asthma. Recently mya sthma sent me to the ER and my doctor prescribed singulair for me. It works really great. The only problem is the price. She gave me samples but if I want to continue taking it I need to get it from a pharmacy. I can apply to get it paid for, which can be a pretty lengthy process, or I could go back to the clinic and get inhaled steroids for free or at least very cheap. My question is shoul I go to the trouble of trying to get the singulair or go for the steroids. I have had absolutely no side effects to the singulair and am wondering what side effects come with the steroids. Any info would be very helpful. Thanks! Cathy
You should most definitely go through the trouble of getting the Singulair, since this medication is good preventive therapy. It’s supposed to prevent or lessen attacks, not rescue you when you have them. By the same token, inhaled steroids, while of some use for preventive therapy, are still necessary for rescue, even with Singulair. My doctor has prescribed both for me during the summer, and during the winter I use Azmacort as well. I’ve long since forgotten what potential side effects come from using inhaled steroids, but I can tell you they’ve never created any problems for me. Sam

Hi…I have been on Effexor (was on) XR for a month. At first, it seemed to lift a bit of my depression and worry, but after, my anxiety became really bad. I seemed to become almost "hypo-manic", and my sleep was WORSE then it ever had been. I could fall asleep fairly easy, but would wake up VERY early, feeling really "hung-over". I really had alot of hope for this drug, but I guess everbody does <g. Well..back to the drawing board…. Peace… James

I was on venlafaxine (Effexor) for about 3 months. It worked great for my depression and pain, however the only side effect was sexual dysfunction, so I discontinued it for that reason. Can’t say it worked on any of my anxiety because I’m on clonazepam (Klonopin) for that, but I know it didn’t cause any increase in anxiety either. My dosage was 75 mg bid (twice daily). My dose of clonazepam is really low, almost subtherapeutic, 0.5 mg bid. Good Luck, Chris

hi all my doc suggested today that i go off clonazepam and start taking effexor as she is not happy with me being on clonazepam for indefinitely. i have tried many SSRI and was as sick as a dog and had anxiety like 24 hours a day for a long time. what has your experience of effexor been??? also how long does it take to taper off clonazepam??? thanks a lot kim
Does clonazepam work for you? If so, don’t switch meds but doctors. Effexor is not an SSRI but close enough. *If* you should decide to try Effexor do *not* stop clonazepam at the same time as you risk experiencing both Effexor initial side effects (including worsening of anxiety) and clomazepam withdrawal symptoms. Tapering off of clonazepam takes as long as it takes depending on how high the dose is and how you’ve been taking it. Diminishing the dose with one fourth or less every two weeks or so is a good pace as a rule but YMMV. But once again: if clonazepam works well, why fix something that isn’t broken? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh this is stoopid medicine your doc is a benzophobe and believes that effexor is less addictive or dependency causing then a benzo-it isn’t. It has to be weaned on and weaned off and is not less toxic a compound then clonazepam. If the Klonopin helps you then why tamper with what works-find another doc if possible effexor is a very good medication in more comprehensive in its ability then ssri’s similar to tca’s-in low doses it works well for loads of people-its main side effect is gastrointestinal and increased levels of anxiety similar to the ssri’s I wouldn’t hesitate to use it if it is indicated or in conjunction with klonopin if needed but your doc’s reasoning for using it is downright wrong LM
Response:
I was put on Effexor and it help me as far as the depression, I started on 150 mg and then my doc put me on Clonazepam (klonapin) .5 mg a day half in the morning and half at night. At the same time he increased my Effexor to 225 mg and to be honest I think the Klonapin is helping better because it takes care of my anxiety to a point and without anxiety I am not depressed…….lol I think Effexor works but I am going to talk my doc into lowering the effexor and increasing the klonapin…
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – For me it helped less with the panic/anxiety part. Had to supplement it with klonopin. It takes about 2-6 weeks to work. keep in mind that the two meds treat different symptoms of anxiety. the effexor is good for the obsessive worries, "rumination" as my therapist calls it. the nagging thoughts in the back of your head that won’t leave you alone. benzos don’t help much with those, but they relieve the physical symptoms, the fear, the dumping of adrenaline, etc. i think you have a good combo there (i’m on both as well). :-) -kelly

Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – i’ve used this three times for bad panic attacks, and while it does sedate me, the after effects are really awful. the next day when i wake up, i feel like my body is still asleep, like i have to drag my limbs around. my teeth kind of buzz in my head (like with SSRI withdrawal), and i feel very "out of it", as though i’m watching myself go through the motions from outside my body (depersonalization?). my pulse seems high, and i just have trouble doing every day things. this lasts for at least 32 hours after i take even a minute dose (10 mg, my prescription is for 25). i’ve taken this before for allergies and never had this reaction. it feel so much like SSRI withdrawal, i wonder if it could be blocking my Effexor or something? i’m only taking Effexor SR 150 mg regularly, no other meds except Atatax 25mg as needed. -kelly
atarax was originally designed as a mild antihistamine similar to other first generation drugs like benadryl-it had a few other effects that seemed to be useful for treating other conditions one being its sedating ability-it really isn’t an anxiolytic-it was also and still is used as a presurgical med-it helps knock you out. It can potentiate the effects of effexor or vice versa, so you may be more deeply sedated from it. The response you have and the side effects you are having are not uncommon even when the drug is used alone LM

Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, I’m 23 y/o female who has has depression/anxiety all my life… And I get panic attacks/anxiety attacks… I don’t get the I’m going to die feeling though so the doc says it’s not true panic attack just anxiety. I went to the Doctors because I couldn’t function. No energy, motivation, depression, severe anxiety, can’t concentrate/focus. About the start of Nov. I was put on Celexa on a Friday morning. I started taking it and was nausous for 2 days and then I got double vision and couldn’t focus my eyes so I stopped taking that Sunday morning and felt poopy for 2-3 days.. The next friday I got put on Wellbutrin. That was absolute HELL. I heard my dog talk and I was insane beyond belief for like 4-5 days and I only took the Wellbutrin for 3 days. I kept repeating over and over "I’m crazy, I’m crazy". And I had 3 panic attacks in one day. So obviously that wasn’t the drug for me. stopped again. The Tues-Wed. following the Friday that I was put on the Wellbutrin I had a panic attack in my marriage counseling session. She helped me go to this Psychiatric place where I met Doctor M. They wanted me to be an in-patient at a Psych Ward. I said no and they scheduled me an appt w/ Dr. R for 3weeks later. That same day Doctor M. prescribed me .5mg Klonopin to be taken every 4-6 hours as needed. Klonopin just made me drowsy/semi-drugged. No good. So I called back and Dr. M prescribed me Ativan. I was nervious about taking that so I went on Base (husband is in the military) and went to a Physicans Assistant-M (PA-M) and he presribed me Zoloft 50mg once a day and Xanax .5mg 3x’s a day that was about Nov. 22. It started working immediately and I felt great. I had been taking xanax 1-2 times a day when I got really nervous/anxious and over-excited and couldn’t calm down. I ran out of xanax and called PA-M to get a refill just to last me until my appt w/ the psychiatric nurse Dr. R. This last friday I went to Dr. R and she decided that I was bi-polar . She was very unorganized and didn’t seem to know her shit. She kept trying to prescribe medicine for me that I told her had caused me problems in the past. Kept saying she didn’t like this drug or that drug. (another doctor had said that in the past also that I was bi-polar possibly. I think I am more adult ADD than bi-polar though although I have a lot of symptoms for both of them). So she griped that xanax is a horrible drug and so addictive blah blah blah. Xanax has been a miracle drug for me. I felt NORMAL. HUMAN. It gave me energy and I could concentrate and was happy and funny and social. So she dicked around and today I finally got my xanax refilled. But on Friday she gave me Trileptol for the bi-polar and was weaning me off of the zoloft down to 25mg for a week and then off of it. This last Sunday I got depressed. and then Yesterday was hell I couldn’t even get dressed/showered until 5:30pm. Luckily this happened when I don’t have to work. The xanax/zoloft has made me so much better that I have been able to get a job and now I am enrolled in college classes online. At 1:30am last night I had another major panic attack and ended up having to call a Doctor on base to try and calm me down. Today I went and saw Dr. R again and I told her that the zoloft was ok other than the vivid nightmares and no sex drive.. I said I could deal with that as long as I was happy and could function. She decided she wanted to put me on Paxil. Which in the past had given me the nightmares/no sex drive.. DUMB *itch. Then tried to prescribe me prozac which also doesn’t work for me and I’d told her that twice also that it didn’t work that I was fine on the zoloft. So she decided to put me on Elavil along w/ the Trileptol. I have a bad astigmatism and was wearing glasses and Elavil causes depth perception problems again DUMB *itch. But I got my prescription for xanax refilled. She kept going on and on how addictive it was. Previously I had been told to take it 3 times a day. Now she had Dr. M (she can’t presribe scheduled drugs/addictive ones. she’s not really a Doctor just some special glorified psychiatric nurse). So Dr. M presribed me #60 pills to take ever 4-6 hours or 4-6 pills a day. Grrrrrrrrrr… What should I do now? I am soooooo confused. I need to be able to function and work and go to school. Without the xanax and zoloft at 25mg yesterday I couldn’t function. In the past I have taken Trazadone, Remeron, Paxil, Prozac, Celexa, Effexor and probably more I’ve forgotten all with some major negative side effects. Help!!!! I am not doubling up the dosage of the xanax nor even taking it as often as the doctor says I can. Just when I need it but it’s a miracle when I do need it. So frustrating. I admitted to doing drugs in the past. (pot, mushrooms, acid 2times, xtc25 times or so, never any other methanphetamine drugs). My sobriety from drugs is very important to me and I believe I have never been addicted to any of those drugs. I worked in a drug rehab for 9 months helping drug addicted girls. But from going to feeling normal to and happy to being told that I may not be able to have what has made me happy anymore is very frustrating. I really don’t care if I get addicted. I just want to be happy and be able to function and work and live. I’m tired of existing and not living. Please help give me some direction on where I should go from here? Can I report this ladies erratic behavior? She tried to prescribe me wellbutrin 3 times when that pill puts me in hell. Also my personal counselor told me she talked to PA-M to originally prescribed me the xanax/zoloft and he told her that he was surprised the xanax lasted me as long as it had and he didn’t think that I was a high risk for addiction. Thanks, Jaimie P.S. Sorry this is so long. I needed to vent.
Hi Jaimie & welcome to ASAP! This is typically one of those stories… paved with incompetent mental health practitioners. If Zoloft and Xanax *as needed* works so well for you you’d better stick with it. It’s common and often very effective to combine an SSRI with a benzo. There is no reason why anybody would want to prescribe Paxil or Prozac instead of Zoloft when that is the med that works, it’s plainly ridiculous. Wellbutrin is the most stimulating of antidepressants and as an only med is contra-indicated for anxiety/panic sufferers, in the vast majority of cases it will only exacerbate anxiety as you noticed. BTW you don’t have to think you’re dying when having a PA. As a matter of fact when in the middle of a major PA I wish I *would* die, anything to *stop* it… If you would be bipolar they shouldn’t have prescribed an SSRI for you but lithium or some such. From the scarce information you give it doesn’t sound like you’re bipolar to me and the fact that Zoloft/Xanax helps that makes it even more unlikely. So find another doc or have them prescribe you Zoloft/Xanax as a regular combo. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Welcome, Jaimie. I was nervious about taking that so I went on Base (husband is in the military) and went to a Physicans Assistant-M (PA-M) and he presribed me Zoloft 50mg once a day and Xanax .5mg 3x’s a day that was about Nov. 22. It started working immediately and I felt great.
If this is what works for you, then why not go back to this person. A good psychiatrist would be best to go to in the long term, one who understands that this is a good med for you. I take Zoloft, and find it to be a good med. My psychiatrist also gives me Ativan when it is needed, but I have not needed to take it for quite a while. The Zoloft is handling things pretty well. Take care, Liz

HI Jaimie, welcome to ASAP, yep that was a long post, but hope you feel better having vented. No wonder you are confused, you sure have been on a roller coaster with meds and docs. So after all this do you have a proper diagnosis? It appears from what you say that the zoloft/xanax combo works best for you. I understand your docs concerns re addiction given your past but from what you say you are in control. Just wanted to tell you that with the Klonopin/clonazepam it usually does cause drowsiness to begin with but for most people this subsides within a few weeks. It doesn’t give the immediate relief that xanax does but as a longer acting benzo it has major benefits – not suggesting you should go back to it, just giving you my experience with this med. So where to from here? Are any of these docs you’ve seen specialist in anxiety, if not it would be great if you were to get a proper diagnosis. From here you could get back to the meds which have helped in the past and perhaps you might like to consider some therapy to develop coping strategies for the panic attacks. Wishing you all the best for the wedding. Even a happy event can add stress to our lives. Vanessa

Hi Jaimie, Welcome to ASAP! It sounds like you’ve been threw the ringer so far. It sounds like you have yet to receive a proper diagnosis and therapuetic routine to work with. I knwo this is frustrating for you but I would try to be as paitent as possible and see this all through. If you receive a firm diagnosis, such as bipolar, they therapy will be different than if you were to suffer from Anxiety/Panic attacks. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is the best therapy for A&P. Work with your Doctors. You clearly don’t have confidence in the one who is unorganized and scattered. Are you confined to using Military Doctors? Would you be able to use civilians and have CHAMPUS reimburse? Military life is difficult to adjust to. How long have you been married? From your note it sounds like you are going through major life adjustments at the moment. Is your spouse with you? I imagine with the likelyhood of us having a war with Iraq you must be concerned about your husbands life. Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress. Hang tough! Hey Jaimie! I don’t post here a lot but I do certainly understand and empathize with your predicament . Just get your meds sorted out and start feeling human when the rug gets yanked out from under you AGAIN!! IT BITES ~ From your comments it would seem that the PA-M has it the most together, overmedicated state by many of your fellow sufferers opinions or needs. Since you’ve switched SSRI’s in the past, I’m guessing going to 50 mg of Zoloft was not a rough start, but you have a lot happening and the Xanax has helped you smooth over the potholes. Any change in meds can be uncomfortable. the comment that PA-M was surprised the initial xanax RX lasted you as long as it did is heartening. also heartening that your personal counselor has been in touch with PA-M and they are willling to work together. thats a wonderful combination. I don’t knock PA’s either in Military or civilian attire, sometimes they have more time to LISTEN. We talk a lot about doctor shopping here, but it seems like/looks like you’ve shopped and maybe found your own best solution….. if the Zoloft /Xanax combo works for you, why mess with it? We all want to be well, feel well and we all search for the Right Stuff. If you are as lucky as I have been you will need the Xanax less and less as the "right" SSRI does what its supposed to do. You CAN chose your health providers, you MUST chose your health providers, and you are in no way obligated to suck up to anyone who isn’t helping you. That applies to those who may be confusing the issues For your own empowerment, stick with the providers who help you. Alphabet soup means nothing, results count. Hugs to you. Sue in Maine

Question:
I just started to take 75 mg effexor xr, since the prozac i use to take, wasn’t working very well anymore. How is this anti-depressant like? Is it better than the older SSRIs? Sometimes I feel strange while I am on it. Does this go away with time? Are there more or less sexual side effects with this one compared to SSRIS like prozac and zoloft? Thanks for any help

I just started to take 75 mg effexor xr, since the prozac i use to take, wasn’t working very well anymore. How is this anti-depressant like? Is it better than the older SSRIs? I am now on 150 mg of Effexor, but it is only temporary. I have been on 75 mg since a couple of years ago, and there is no side effect which gives me problems. I am also on Risperdal, and recently my pdoc changed it for Zyprexa and I noted an increase of my sexual libido, so I am not sure if Effexor is lowering my libido. What I can say is that when I was married I didn’t find I needed more sexual drive than I actually had. If you find any annoying side effects from Effexor, most surely they’ll disappear in something like a week. — Teilhard Knight The Extraterrestrial Eat the sandwich to email http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–= Over 100,000 Newsgroups – Unlimited Fast Downloads – 19 Servers =—–

Hi Keith. I deal with a difficult to treat depression and after trying several ADs I tried Prozac and found it helped me quite a bit for nearly two years. At least until I got hit with the infamous "Prozac poop-out". Maybe that is what hit you as well? Anyway, when it stopped working and sent me into one of the worst depressions I can remember my pdoc put me on Effexor XR. After building up to 150mg over a couple of weeks I actually started feeling better. I continued to improve and was beginning to think this may be a miracle med for me. It helped my depression much like Prozac had at first but seemed to somehow be ’smoother’ in the way it pulled me out of depression without some of the side effects I sometimes had on Prozac. That is until I started feeling not so good physically but I wasn’t sure what was wrong. I eventually had my blood pressure checked and found that it was way too high. (like 180/205) I ended up back at the pdocs and also seeing my regular medical doctor. I had read that Effexor could raise blood pressure in some people. Guess I’m one of the lucky ones. To be fair I had previously had some minor blood pressure problems that had been treated and corrected. I also have a family history of blood pressure/heart problems. I had told my pdoc about this but he said the chances of this causing me such problems were slim. I am not trying to scare you about Effexor because I think it is a great med and I wish I could stay with it. But I did want to let you know to at least be aware of this possibility and if you are not sure have your blood pressure checked once in awhile. As far as treating depression goes, this helped me a lot with very few other side effects. Good luck and I hope it helps you as much as it helped me only without the blood pressure problem! Bonnie

Question:
Hi, I’ve been on 50mg of Zoloft for 8 weeks which has worked great overall. My only complaint is a lot of muscle tension. It’s faded somewhat over these first 2 months, but is it likely to subside even more or am I probably stuck with it? Thanks! Fritz
Response:
Wow, I didn’t get the muscle tension. I got an upset tummy and the runs for a few weeks and then that went away. The only lingering side effect I have is lack of sex drive. Hate it. Hope your tension goes away. Good luck, Amanda – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’ve been on 50mg of Zoloft for 8 weeks which has worked great overall. Wow. I’m glad it wasn’t just me. My doctor warned me about it, but I figured that it was more important to get through every day with a clear head than get a little action once a month. That’s my only side effect, but it’s a doozy! ~Paul For me zoloft killed my libido seemingly forever…I no longer have ‘the fire’ and i do miss it!!

Yes, the big O is difficult to achieve…more so than usual, that is! So unfair: Zoloft effectively takes the edge off daily life, at the high price of diminishing one of the reasons for living!!
Response:
I can identify. The thing that saves me from depression depresses me. I take Effexor now (for a couple of years) but it started half way through the Prozac (about 4 years into that 8-year stint). Tried Welbutrin but that made me really crazy. -seph [I'm paul but you already got one, so I'll be seph, as in joseph or persephone] ::: Yes, the big O is difficult to achieve…more so than usual, that is! Yes. It’s normal. Supplementary Wellbutrin may help. It is often used to ameliorate the sexual side effects caused by antidepressant medication, and has been shown in numerous clinical studies to be effective for this purpose. Speaking of Wellbutrin, it also so happens that Wellbutrin is an antidepressant in its own right, noteworthy for not having this particular side effect that you are complaining about. C//

SSRI's and Klonipin???
Question:
Hi everyone, I’ve been taking paxil for several weeks now, (10mg.) with xanax in the morning. For some reason, the paxil has NO sedative effects on me. My doctor switched me from the xanax to clonazepam. She thought something longer acting would be better for my anxiety. In my drug book, however, it states that the duration of clonazepam is 7-8 hours, which seems to me the same as xanax. I’m going to take .5 in the morning and at bedtime. I am hopeful for this, because once the xanax wears off, I am anxious again. Does anyone know the half life on klonipin? I know there are many people here on Klonipin. How long until it takes effect? I thought I read here a couple of weeks for the full effect. How does it work with the SSRI’s? If I don’t feel better in a couple of weeks, she’s gonna switch me to another SSRI. Also, if you are on an SSRI, why are you taking klonipin? and if you didn’t take klonipin/xanax would you feel a little anxiety from the SSRI? My doctor thinks that I am having a paradoxical reaction to the paxil. She said paxil is usually the most sedating of the SSRI’s. But, I’ve noticed some people are on SSRI’s alone, and some take them with a benzo. Thankyou, Maria
